Phase-Only Digital Encryption Using A Three-Pass Protocol, Jonathan Blackledge, Paul Tobin, W. Govere, S. Sibanda, C. M. Adolfo

Conference papers

Abstract—This paper considers an application of phase-only digital encryption to the three-pass protocol leading to a new ‘nokey- exchange algorithm’. After providing a study on the theoretical background to the method, an algorithm is presented on a step-by-step basis together with three examples of cryptanalysis. A prototype MATLAB function is provided for validation of the approach and for further development by interested readers.

Detection Of Grid Voltage Anomalies Via Broadband Subspace Decomposition, Samet Biricik, Soydan Redif Jan 2019

Detection Of Grid Voltage Anomalies Via Broadband Subspace Decomposition, Samet Biricik, Soydan Redif

Conference papers

Due to the increase of sensitive loads on the mains power grid, measurement and monitoring of the power quality (PQ) have become an important factor for both consumers and operators. As is well-known, PQ problems occur in a very short time period with specific characteristics. In transmission or distribution systems, power quality data are collected from monitoring devices such as digital fault recorders, power quality and dynamic system monitors, etc. The recorded data has to be analysed in order to understand system anomalies. These anomalies may be due to sources of broadband noise. In this study, we employ broadband subspace …

The Deployment Of An Iot Network Infrastructure, As A Localised Regional Service, John Fox, Andrew Donnellan, Liam Doumen

Conference papers

The Internet of things (IoT) is fast evolving with a wide range of technologies being designated specifically as IoT solutions. Studies on such solutions generally reference the specific communication medium while negating the complete architecture of the IoT system. From a system perspective, a complete IoT solution can be separated into three categories, the data collector, the communication method and the cloud platform service. The data collector relates to the embedded system device (or the `things' element) at the source of the application, the communication method relates to the network protocol used to send or receive the data and the …

Sliding Mode Control Strategy For Three-Phase Three-Level T-Type Shunt Active Power Filters, Hasan Komurcugil, Sertac Bayhan, Samet Biricik Jan 2019

Sliding Mode Control Strategy For Three-Phase Three-Level T-Type Shunt Active Power Filters, Hasan Komurcugil, Sertac Bayhan, Samet Biricik

Conference papers

In this paper, a sliding mode control (SMC) strategy is proposed for three-phase three-level T-type shunt active power filters (SAPF). The proposed control strategy has the ability to balance the capacitor voltages with respect to the neutral-point. The proposed SMC strategy is formulated in the natural frame which eliminates abc/dq transformation and two PI controllers compared to the design in the dq frame. In natural frame, only one PI controller is needed to generate the amplitude of grid current reference. The output of the PI controller is multiplied by the unity sinusoidal waveforms, obtained from the grid voltages, so as …

Current Cybersecurity Maturity Models: How Effective In Healthcare Cloud?, Oo Akinsanya, M Papadaki, L Sun Jan 2019

Current Cybersecurity Maturity Models: How Effective In Healthcare Cloud?, Oo Akinsanya, M Papadaki, L Sun

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This research investigates the effective assessment of healthcare cyber security maturity models for healthcare organizations actively using cloud computing. Healthcare cyber security maturity models designate a collection of capabilities expected in a healthcare organization and facilitate its ability to identify where their practices are weak or absent and where they are truly embedded. However, these assessment practices are sometimes considered not effective because sole compliance to standards does not produce objective assessment outputs, and the performance measurements of individual IS components does not depict the overall security posture of a healthcare organization. They also do not consider the effect of …

Fast Predictive Maintenance In Industrial Internet Of Things (Iiot) With Deep Learning (Dl): A Review, T Rieger, S Regier, I Stengel, N Clarke

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Applying Deep Learning in the field of Industrial Internet of Things is a very active research field. The prediction of failures of machines and equipment in industrial environments before their possible occurrence is also a very popular topic, significantly because of its cost saving potential. Predictive Maintenance (PdM) applications can benefit from DL, especially because of the fact that high complex, non-linear and unlabeled (or partially labeled) data is the normal case. Especially with PdM applications being used in connected smart factories, low latency predictions are essential. Because of this real-time processing becomes more important. The aim of this paper …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) is becoming the prevailing candidate for managing future mobile multimedia communications, including critical communications such as public safety, emergency professionals and corporate networks. IMS security and privacy has gained much attention in the few last years. The review of recent IMS security activities stresses the inclusion of intermediate nodes in the media path of secured communications as an open issue. This paper presents an end-to-middle-to-end solution which enables the usage of IMS media plane elements such as recorders, transcoders and novel cross-ciphering functions in a secure way. The proposed solution, which is fully compliant with IMS, …

#Brexit Vs. #Stopbrexit: What Is Trendier? An Nlp Analysis, M Palomino, A Murali Jan 2019

#Brexit Vs. #Stopbrexit: What Is Trendier? An Nlp Analysis, M Palomino, A Murali

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Online trends have established themselves as a new method of information propagation that is reshaping journalism in the digital age. We argue that sentiment analysis—the classification of human emotion expressed in text—can enhance existing algorithms for trend discovery. By highlighting topics that are polarised, sentiment analysis can offer insight into the influence of users who are involved in a trend, and how other users adopt such a trend. As a case study, we have investigated a highly topical subject: Brexit, the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union. We retrieved an experimental corpus of publicly available tweets referring …

The Conclusion From One Million Tonnes Of Experience In Galvanizing Steel – Lmac Is Not A Primary Instigator Of Cracking, C Leighfield, Mn James

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In the period 2000–2006 occasional instances of serious service cracking in galvanized structural steelwork were detected. At the time it was suggested that the cracks had occurred during the galvanizing process, been covered up by the zinc coating and then opened up during service. Several significant European-wide research projects were initiated to identify and understand the mechanisms that control LMAC during hot dip galvanizing. However, experience in the UK has shown that the frequency of cracking of structural steel during galvanizing is very low, and that when it does occur it is almost invariably due to known factors that influence …

Fatigue Life Prediction For Rotary Friction Welded Ti-6al-4v Under Variable Amplitude Fatigue Loading, Der Merwe Hb Van, Mn James, Dg Hattingh, W Rall

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The present paper considers variable amplitude fatigue lifing for rotary friction welds in Grade 23 6Al-4V titanium alloy. The work reported in this paper aimed firstly at optimising the parameters necessary to successfully rotary weld 6 mm diameter hourglass specimens of Ti-6Al-4V and, secondly, at generating CA stress-life (S-N) fatigue data to underpin a VA fatigue life prediction that was then experimentally verified against the results obtained from VA fatigue testing using an 3200 turning point sequence extracted from the simulated aircraft load spectrum mini-FALSTAFF (a modified Fighter Aircraft Loading Standard for Fatigue). It was found that the real damage …

Characterisation Of Fatigue Crack Growth Using The Cjp Model Of Crack Tip Fields Or Plastic Ctod, Mn James, Jm Vasco-Olmo, Fa Díaz, Fv Antunes, Y Bing, Y Huang

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This paper provides an update on the current status of work that has been done to validate the CJP model of crack tip stresses and also summarises some findings from linked work that has used DIC to determine the range of plastic crack tip opening displacement as a correlator of fatigue crack growth rate. The paper considers several ways of calculating an effective range of stress intensity factor that have been proposed in various papers, as the preferred option is not yet fully clear. It further highlights the potential value, in terms of elucidating the mechanisms involved in plasticity-induced crack …

Future Energy Demands Of European Buildings In The Framework Of Climate Change: A Scoping Study, V Ciancio, F Salata, S Falasca, Et Al

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Climate change is considered an important global threat, with a significant impact on the energy performance, since buildings will be subjected to higher average outdoor temperatures. This paper explores the relative impact of global warming across the different regional climates of Europe comparing present and estimated future energy needs of a hypothetical residential house located in 19 cities characterized by different latitude and Köppen-Geiger class. Building performance simulations with EnergyPlus are performed in order to simulate the heating and cooling needs of the building and the associated CO2 emissions in the present and in the future. The progressive increase in …

Would A Robot Trust You? Developmental Robotics Model Of Trust And Theory Of Mind, S Vinanzi, M Patacchiola, A Chella, A Cangelosi Jan 2019

Would A Robot Trust You? Developmental Robotics Model Of Trust And Theory Of Mind, S Vinanzi, M Patacchiola, A Chella, A Cangelosi

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Trust is a critical issue in human-robot interaction: as robotic systems gain complexity, it becomes crucial for them to be able to blend in our society by maximizing their acceptability and reliability. Various studies have examined how trust is attributed by people to robots, but less have investigated the opposite scenario, where a robot is the trustor and a human is the trustee. The ability for an agent to evaluate the trustworthiness of its sources of information is particularly useful in joint task situations where people and robots must collaborate to reach shared goals. We propose an artificial cognitive architecture …

Virtual Source Method Simulation Of Progressive Water Waves, O Al-Tameemi, Di Graham, K Langfeld Jan 2019

Virtual Source Method Simulation Of Progressive Water Waves, O Al-Tameemi, Di Graham, K Langfeld

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The virtual source method (VSM) has been developed to simulate water waves based upon the solution of Laplace’s equation for the velocity potential integral equations with full nonlinear surface conditions. The basis of the method is the use of specific Green’s functions for a rectangular ‘virtual domain’ which is an extension of the physical domain. The solution variables are frequency components of the velocity potential at the upper virtual boundary and these are found by specifying appropriate conditions on the physical boundaries (i.e. wavemaker, walls and wave surfaces). The authors have shown that the model successfully simulates both linear and …

We report optical constants of e-beam evaporated yttrium oxide Y2O3 thin films as determined from angle-dependent reflectance measurements at wavelengths from 5 to 50 nm. Samples were measured using synchrotron radiation at the Advanced Light Source. The experimental reflectance data were fit to obtain values for the index of refraction and thin film roughness. We compare our computed constants with those of previous researchers and those computed using the independent atom approximation from the CXRO website. We found that the index of refraction near 36 nm is much lower than previous data from Tomiki as reported by …

Experimental Study Of Wave Loads On A Small Vehicle In Close Proximity To A Large Vessel, Nan Xie, Gregorio Iglesias, M. Hann, R. Pemberton, D. Greaves Jan 2019

Experimental Study Of Wave Loads On A Small Vehicle In Close Proximity To A Large Vessel, Nan Xie, Gregorio Iglesias, M. Hann, R. Pemberton, D. Greaves

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Operations involving the launch or recovery of a smaller vessel from a larger one are extremely dangerous in high sea states and, therefore, they are normally carried out in low to moderate sea states. However, this can be severely restrictive and in some situations, carrying out such operations in high sea states is unavoidable. Here we report on a detailed investigation of the interaction between two vessels of different size in order to characterise their hydrodynamic interaction under different conditions and to provide insight for operational purposes. Model experiments were conducted to investigate the hydrodynamic interaction between two vessels in …

Musical Borrowing In Sonification, Núria Bonet Jan 2019

Musical Borrowing In Sonification, Núria Bonet

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

Sonification presents some challenges in communicating information, particularly because of the large difference between possible data to sound mappings and cognitively valid mappings. It is an information transmission process which can be described through the Shannon-Weaver Theory of Mathematical Communication. Musical borrowing is proposed as a method in sonification which can aid the information transmission process as the composer’s and listener’s shared musical knowledge is used. This article describes the compositional process of Wasgiischwashäsch (2017) which uses Rossini’s William Tell Overture (1829) to sonify datasets relating to climate change in Switzerland. It concludes that the familiarity of audiences with the …
