With the increase in the testing culture of the United States, the focus in education has shifted towards closing the achievement gap …

Chemometric Applications In Fire Debris Analysis: Likelihood Ratios From Naive Bayes And Frequency Of Component And Pyrolysis Product Occurrence, Anuradha Akmeemana Jan 2019

Chemometric Applications In Fire Debris Analysis: Likelihood Ratios From Naive Bayes And Frequency Of Component And Pyrolysis Product Occurrence, Anuradha Akmeemana

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the major challenges in fire investigation is the determination of the cause of fire. The fire can be accidental or intentional. The determination of ignitable liquid residue (ILR) from fire debris helps the process and this process is called fire debris analysis in forensic science. This is one of the most complex areas in the field of forensics because of the evaporation of the ILR from the debris and the interference of the substrate matrix with the ILR if present. In the present, the final decisions in fire debris analysis are based on categorical statements and it only …

Adaptive Smoothing Parameter In Kernel Density Estimation And Parameter Estimation In Normal Mixture Distributions, Sabiha Mahzabeen

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Kernel density estimation is a widely used tool in nonparametric density estimation procedures. Choice of a kernel function and a smoothing parameter are two important issues in implementing kernel density estimation procedures. In this paper, four different kernel functions are considered in implementing an adaptive selection procedure in choosing the smoothing parameter. In simulation, a skewed bimodal density which is a mixture of two normal distributions is considered along with the standard normal and the standard exponential densities. In skewed bimodal data, parameter estimation is also explored in the context of the parameter estimation in mixtures of normal distributions. Maximum …

A (Co)Algebraic Approach To Hennessy-Milner Theorems For Weakly Expressive Logics, Zeinab Bakhtiari, Helle Hvid Hansen, Alexander Kurz Jan 2019

A (Co)Algebraic Approach To Hennessy-Milner Theorems For Weakly Expressive Logics, Zeinab Bakhtiari, Helle Hvid Hansen, Alexander Kurz

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

"Coalgebraic modal logic, as in [9, 6], is a framework in which modal logics for specifying coalgebras can be developed parametric in the signature of the modal language and the coalgebra type functor T. Given a base logic (usually classical propositional logic), modalities are interpreted via so-called predicate liftings for the functor T. These are natural transformations that turn a predicate over the state space X into a predicate over TX. Given that T-coalgebras come with general notions of T-bisimilarity [11] and behavioral equivalence [7], coalgebraic modal logics are designed to respect those. In particular, if two states are behaviourally …

Assessment Of Adaptability Of A Supply Chain Trading Agent’S Strategy: Evolutionary Game Theory Approach, Yoon Sang Lee, Riyaz T. Sikora

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

With the increase in the complexity of supply chain management, the use of intelligent agents for automated trading has gained popularity (Collins, Arunachalam, B, et al. 2006). The performance of supply-chain agents depends on not just the market environment (supply and demand patterns) but also on what types of other agents they are competing with. For designers of such agents it is important to ascertain that their agents are robust and can adapt to changing market and competitive environments. However, to date there has not been any work done that assesses the adaptability of a trading agent’s strategy in the …

Measurements Of The Primary Bjerknes Force In A Cavitating Ultrasonic Field, Mason Smith Jan 2019

Measurements Of The Primary Bjerknes Force In A Cavitating Ultrasonic Field, Mason Smith

Honors Theses

Cavitation is the result when there are rapid changes in pressure in a liquid. These vapor-filled cavities can occur when ultrasound propagates through water at sufficient power. The volumes of these cavities can pulsate and can even couple with the radiation pressure from the ultrasound. The result is a translational force on the bubbles. This translational force on the bubble is called the primary Bjerknes force. The secondary Bjerknes force is the result of two pulsating cavities, but this force is ignored since the buoyant force and the primary Bjerknes force are the dominant forces. Immediately before a bubble begins …

Renewables & Refugees: A Solution For Jordan, Lauren Burns Jan 2019

Renewables & Refugees: A Solution For Jordan, Lauren Burns

Honors Theses

As the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan continues to host the third largest Syrian refugee population in the world, the state’s infrastructure and its people are taking a toll. Before the war in Syria began, Jordan was already suffering from a weak economy, resource scarcity, and an enormous population boom. Since accepting nearly 2.5 million refugees, these issues have compounded year after year—nearly reaching a breaking point. I propose an unconventional solution to some aspects of the refugee crisis: renewable energy. Renewables are cheaper than fossil fuels, consume less water in electricity generation, emit fewer greenhouse gases, and promote job creation …

Openacc Based Gpu Parallelization Of Plane Sweep Algorithm For Geometric Intersection, Anmol Paudel, Satish Puri

Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Line segment intersection is one of the elementary operations in computational geometry. Complex problems in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) like finding map overlays or spatial joins using polygonal data require solving segment intersections. Plane sweep paradigm is used for finding geometric intersection in an efficient manner. However, it is difficult to parallelize due to its in-order processing of spatial events. We present a new fine-grained parallel algorithm for geometric intersection and its CPU and GPU implementation using OpenMP and OpenACC. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work demonstrating an effective parallelization of plane sweep on GPUs. …

Parallelization Of Plane Sweep Based Voronoi Construction With Compiler Directives, Anmol Paudel, Jie Yang, Satish Puri Jan 2019

Parallelization Of Plane Sweep Based Voronoi Construction With Compiler Directives, Anmol Paudel, Jie Yang, Satish Puri

Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Voronoi diagram construction is a common and fundamental problem in computational geometry and spatial computing. Numerous sequential and parallel algorithms for Voronoi diagram construction exists in literature. This paper presents a multi-threaded approach where we augment an existing sequential implementation of Fortune's planesweep algorithm with compiler directives. The novelty of our fine-grained parallel algorithm lies in exploiting the concurrency available at each event point encountered during the algorithm. On the Intel Xeon E5 CPU, our shared-memory parallelization with OpenMP achieves around 2x speedup compared to the sequential implementation using datasets containing 2k-128k sites.

Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Uncovering genotype-phenotype relationships is a fundamental challenge in genomics. Gene prioritization is an important step for this endeavor to make a short manageable list from a list of thousands of genes coming from high-throughput studies. Network propagation methods are promising and state of the art methods for gene prioritization based on the premise that functionally-related genes tend to be close to each other in the biological networks.

In this study, we present PhenoGeneRanker, an improved version of a recently developed network propagation method called Random Walk with Restart on Multiplex Heterogeneous Networks (RWR-MH). PhenoGeneRanker allows multi-layer gene and disease networks. …

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Applications of wavelet analysis in ultra-thin film transient reflectivity (TR) measurements have been investigated. Advantages of utilizing different localized wavelet bases, in position and time, have been addressed on the residual TR signals. Morse wavelets have been used to obtain information from the abrupt oscillatory modes in the signal, which are not distinguishable with conventional methods such as Fourier transforms. These abrupt oscillatory modes are caused by the surface, interface, or any short-lived oscillatory modes which are suppressed in the TR signal in ultra-thin films. It is demonstrated that by choosing different Morse wavelets, information regarding different oscillatory modes in …

Construction Of A Cross-Layer Linked G-Octamer Via Conformational Control: A Stable G-Quadruplex In H-Bond Competitive Solvents, Ying He, Yanbin Zhang, Luksaz Wojtas, Novruz G. Akhmedov, David Thai, Heng Wang, Xiaopeng Li, Hao Guo, Xiaodong Shi

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Methanol soluble and stable guanosine octamers were successfully achieved via H-bond self-assembly. Through structural conformational design, we developed a new class of guanosine derivatives with modification on guanine (8-aryl) and ribose (20 ,30 -isopropylidene). This unique design led to the formation of the first discrete G8-octamer with its structure characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, MS and NMR spectroscopy. The G8-octamer showed unique cation recognition properties, including the formation of a stable Rb+ templated G-quadruplex. Based on this observation, further modification on the 8-aryl moiety was performed to incorporate a cross-layer H-bond or covalent linkage. Similar G-octamers were obtained in …

Using Labeling Theory As A Guide To Examine The Patterns, Characteristics, And Sanctions Given To Cybercrimes, Brian K. Payne, Brittany Hawkins, Chunsheng Xin

Sociology & Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Over the past decade, reports of cybercrime have soared across the globe. Criminologists agree that the increase in cybercrime stems from technological advancements that have changed all facets of societal interactions. While it is agreed that technology has shaped cybercrime, there is less understanding about the dynamics of cybercrime. In particular, some researchers have explored whether these offenses are simply traditional types of crime that are now carried out through different strategies, while others have argued that cybercrimes are, in fact, new types of crime. This ambiguity potentially limits prevention and intervention strategies. In an effort to build our understanding …
