The Impact Of Blended Learning On Measures Of Academic Progress (Map) Based On Student Growth, Molly Elizabeth Mccomas Jan 2019

The Impact Of Blended Learning On Measures Of Academic Progress (Map) Based On Student Growth, Molly Elizabeth Mccomas

Online Theses and Dissertations

Blended learning in the secondary setting is a growing and evolving method of instructional delivery. Current research continues to focus on the post-secondary setting and often neglects the impact on student growth in the secondary settings. The combination of technology and teacher involvement to deliver high quality instruction is important in 21st century learning. This quantitative, non-experimental, causal-comparative study analyzes student growth scores on Measures of Academic Progress in the area of mathematics for 8th grade students after two consecutive years in a blended learning instructional setting as compared to 8th grade students after two consecutive years in a traditional …

Efficient Local Comparison Of Images Using Krawtchouk Descriptors, Julian Deville Jan 2019

Efficient Local Comparison Of Images Using Krawtchouk Descriptors, Julian Deville

Online Theses and Dissertations

It is known that image comparison can prove cumbersome in both computational complexity and runtime, due to factors such as the rotation, scaling, and translation of the object in question. Due to the locality of Krawtchouk polynomials, relatively few descriptors are necessary to describe a given image, and this can be achieved with minimal memory usage. Using this method, not only can images be described efficiently as a whole, but specific regions of images can be described as well without cropping. Due to this property, queries can be found within a single large image, or collection of large images, which …

The Role Of Continuous Flowering Phenology For In Neotropical Plant-Pollinator Interactions For Use In Conservation, Chelsea Renee Hinton Jan 2019

The Role Of Continuous Flowering Phenology For In Neotropical Plant-Pollinator Interactions For Use In Conservation, Chelsea Renee Hinton

Online Theses and Dissertations

The diversity of mutualistic interactions in the Neotropics exceeds that of all other tropical regions and is posited to result from a unique assemblage of plant species that produce the highest spatio-temporal predictability of food resources. A rare component of the Neotropical flora that contributes largely to the spatio-temporal predictability of food resources is found in understory shrub or tree-let species with a continuous reproductive phenology (i.e. produce fruit and flowers daily during all months of the year). Plant-animal interaction science suggests that plant species with a longer duration of reproductive phenology will accumulate more mutualistic partners over time and …

Teacher Perspectives On Environmental Education Programs Provided By Eastern Kentucky University Division Of Natural Areas, Mahala Amber Watts Jan 2019

Teacher Perspectives On Environmental Education Programs Provided By Eastern Kentucky University Division Of Natural Areas, Mahala Amber Watts

Online Theses and Dissertations

A goal of environmental education (EE) is to help instill environmental stewardship in students for the future. Hungerford and Volk (1990) believe environmental stewardship is changing behaviors, values, or beliefs related to human-environment interaction. It is important for people to learn about environmental concepts at a young age, so they will care about them in the future. Eastern Kentucky University’s (EKU) Division of Natural Areas has been conducting EE programming for students K-12 for the past 13 years. The areas utilized for EE programming include Maywoods Environmental and Educational Laboratory in Garrard County, KY or Lilley Cornett Woods Appalachian Ecological …

Federal Financing Of Higher Education At A Crossroads: The Evolution Of The Student Loan Debt Crisis And The Reauthorization Of The Higher Education Act Of 1965, Camilla E. Watson Jan 2019

Federal Financing Of Higher Education At A Crossroads: The Evolution Of The Student Loan Debt Crisis And The Reauthorization Of The Higher Education Act Of 1965, Camilla E. Watson

Scholarly Works

Currently, there are 44.2 million Americans holding student loan debt collectively totaling $1.5 trillion. This massive debt has a profound effect, not only on the lives of the debtors, but also on the national economy because it prevents the debtors from buying homes and cars and creating new businesses. This debt is also speculated to be a likely trigger for the next housing bubble because student loans, like the subprime mortgage loans underlying the 2008 financial crisis, are securitized and sold to investors. But many of those with student loans struggle to find jobs that will enable them to pay …

Epiphytic Diatoms As Bioindicators Of Trophic Status Of Lake Modrac(Bosnia And Herzegovina), Jasmina Kamberovi?, Vedran Stuhli, Zorana Luki?, Mirela Habibovic, Emina Me?Iki?

Turkish Journal of Botany

Biodiversity of diatoms and applicability of diatom indices in biomonitoring based on littoral epiphytic samples of Lake Modrac were investigated. Diatoms were taken mostly from Phragmites australis stems in 2017, during which physical and chemical parameters of the water were measured. A total of 85 diatom taxa were identified. Gomphonema (13 spp.), Navicula (11 spp.), and Nitzschia (8 spp.) were the most abundant genera. Obtained values of trophic indices (TID, TvD, and TDIL) pointed to meso- to eutrophic status for most localities, while values of the IBD, EPI, ?D, and IPS indices indicated good ecological status, except for localities at …

Syntaxonomic Analysis Of Forests, Shrubs, And Steppes Of Tavşan Mountain(Amasya, Turkey), Cengi̇z Yildirim, Erkan Yalçin, Arzu Cansaran, Hasan Korkmaz

Turkish Journal of Botany

The aim of this study is to reveal the syntaxonomical structure of Tavşan Mountain in the Euxinian transition area in northern Turkey. Eight plant associations were determined and classified using the Braun?Blanquet phytosociological approach. Detrended correspondence analysis was also used to reveal the environmental heterogeneity among the plant associations. Raunkiaer life form ratios of syntaxa were calculated. Shannon?Wiener index values also were determined for each plant association. The results of this study suggested that which environmental factors could be decisive in community diversity and syntaxonomical status.

Design And Test Of An Apparatus For Transient Measurements Of The Thermalconductivity And Volumetric Heat Capacity Of Solids, Florian Gather, Ekrem Güneş, Peter J. Klar Jan 2019

Design And Test Of An Apparatus For Transient Measurements Of The Thermalconductivity And Volumetric Heat Capacity Of Solids, Florian Gather, Ekrem Güneş, Peter J. Klar

Turkish Journal of Physics

Knowledge of the thermal conductivity (κ) of solids is crucial for all thermoelectric devices. A new approach in transient measurement to determine this value as well as electric conductivity (σ) and the Seebeck coefficient (S) is presented here. This approach can be combined with current steady-state methods. A cylindrical sample is mounted between two heat-flux sensors that can be heated or cooled at their outer ends. The input signals defining the heat fluxes at the sensors can be any arbitrary function of time, although some waveforms yield more valid results. The method is evaluated by employing a one-dimensional numerical model …

Modified Newton's Gravitational Law From Deformed Poisson Bracket, Ch'ng Han Siong Jan 2019

Modified Newton's Gravitational Law From Deformed Poisson Bracket, Ch'ng Han Siong

Turkish Journal of Physics

In this paper, we obtain the modified Newton's gravitational law from deformed Poisson bracket motivated by the generalized uncertainty principle. The modified Newton's gravitational law that we obtain contains a term that plays an important role only in the regime of first order in $\bar{\beta}$. In the ordinary situation or condition, the modified Newton's gravitational law reduces to the conventional Newton's gravitational law.

Various Paths To The Spontaneous Growth Of $P$-Form Fields, Fethi̇ Mübi̇n Ramazanoğlu Jan 2019

Various Paths To The Spontaneous Growth Of $P$-Form Fields, Fethi̇ Mübi̇n Ramazanoğlu

Turkish Journal of Physics

We show that $p$-form fields can go through spontaneous growth due to various couplings in gravity theories, forming a new example of spontaneous tensorization. Generalizing the spontaneous scalarization theory of Damour and Esposito-Farèse where the original idea has been applied to different fields from vectors to spinors has received high levels of interest in recent years. We first review this existing literature on spontaneous growth in gravity, and then apply the known mechanisms to $p$-forms. We show that one can induce spontaneous growth in $p$-forms for each of the regularized instability mechanisms, which was not the case for other types …

U-Pb Zircon Geochronology, Geochemistry, And Petrogenesis Of The Hamech Intrusions In The Kuh-E-Shah Volcano-Plutonic Complex, Eastern Iran, Abbas Etemadi, Mohammad Hassan Karimpour, Azadeh Malekzadeh Shafaroudi, José Francisco Santos, Ryan Mathur, Sara Ribeiro

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Hamech area is located in the west of Kuh-e-Shah volcano-plutonic complex, close to the boundary between the Lut Block and Sistan Suture Zone (SSZ), and is composed of monzonite to diorite porphyries and rare gabbro that intruded into older volcanic rocks. U-Pb zircon dating indicates an age of 36.9 ± 1 Ma for gabbro (Late Eocene, Priabonian) and 38.6 ± 0.5 Ma for dacite (Late Eocene, Bartonian). Geochemically, the studied intrusions are dominantly I-type, high-K calc-alkaline, and metaluminous features. Primitive mantle-normalized trace-element spider diagrams of these rocks present enrichment in ion lithophile elements such as Cs, Rb, Ba, K, …

Miocene Sediment Mineralogy Of The Lower Chelif Basin (Nw Algeria):Implications For Weathering And Provenance, Fatiha Hadji, Abbas Marok, Ali Mokhtar-Samet

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Mineralogical investigations of clay and nonclay minerals were conducted on the Miocene sediments from three sections of the lower Chelif basin, northern Algeria. Bulk rock analyses of Miocene sediments show that these clastic sediments are dominated by variable mineralogical compositions and concentrations. Quartz is the dominant mineral through the three stratigraphic intervals and calcite (except in the upper layers) and dolomite are lacking in the Messinian deposits. The clay mineralogy is dominated by smectite (24%) and mixed-layer illite-smectite (I-S) (22%) during the Burdigalian-Langhian, illite (36%) and kaolinite (28%) in the Tortonian, and illite (49%) and I-S (20%) in the Messinian …

Relationship Between The Anisotropy Of Magnetic Susceptibility And Development Of The Haymana Anticline, Central Anatolia (Turkey), Murat Özkaptan, Erhan Gülyüz

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Integrated structural and anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) analyses were carried out on the Campanian- Maastrichtian shale-mudstone dominated sedimentary sequences (Haymana Formation) cropping out within the doubly plunging Haymana Anticline in Central Anatolia (Turkey). In order to understand the relationship between the development of magnetofabrics and the tectonic processes, six sites from different parts of the anticline were sampled and analyzed. AMS lineations from 634 cylindrical samples and structural data were collected in the field. The results show very high correlation with the structural trend of the region and indicate that the maximum susceptibility vector (k1) is almost parallel to …

Interpretation Of Sea Level Change Using Paleobiodiversity Analysis: The Darende Formation Of The Eocene (Malatya Basin, East Turkey), Si̇bel Kayğili, Ercan Aksoy

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

This study was conducted in the Paleogene-Neogene Malatya Basin situated in Eastern Anatolia with particular focus on the analyses of the paleobiodiversity of the larger benthic foraminifera assemblage found in the late Lutetian-Bartonian Yenice and Asartepe members of the Darende Formation. Frequency, dominance, similarity analyses, population size, and diversity indices of the genera/species were obtained for the first time from the analyses of the paleobiodiversity data interpretation obtained by using the larger benthic foraminifera of the Yenice and Asartepe members. According to frequency analysis values, rarely, seldom, generally, frequently, and commonly observed genera and species were determined. The frequency analysis …

Blue Sky At Midnight - Earthquake Lightning, Neil Whitehead, Ülkü Ulusoy Jan 2019

Blue Sky At Midnight - Earthquake Lightning, Neil Whitehead, Ülkü Ulusoy

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Earthquake light, emerging from the ground as flashes at night (neglecting other more minor forms), usually has a white hemispherical center and blue outer part. The blue resembles daytime blue sky. Its existence is increasingly verified, with about 80 videos on the web to mid-2017. However, the light must be differentiated from power-grid faults, so sound/color/form/length criteria were developed in this paper through examination of many videos. Light should be coseismic (i.e. when the S-waves arrive), hemispherical, not during a storm, less than 1 s long, without fire or smoke, and without many rapid color changes. Warnings about camera artifacts …

Devonian-Carboniferous Brachiopods And Biostratigraphic Findings From The Kangal Phyllite-Slate Formation (Greenschist), Sivas, Turkey, Cazi̇be Sayar, Ali̇ Seydi̇ Gülteki̇n, Mustafa Si̇mav Bargu, Esra Alkan

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Kangal Phyllite-Slate Formation forms the basement rocks in Kangal-Çetinkaya-Alacahan-Divriği (Sivas). These late Paleozoic phyllite-slate associations occupy a large area, possibly composed of Early Paleozoic sediments in its lower part. The lower levels (Bakırtepe Metaquartzite Member; 0-500 m) and uppermost levels comprise the Düzce Recrystallized Limestone Member (0-25 m). The lower boundary is invisible and the upper boundary is unconformably overlain by the Kıratgediği Limestone (late Jurassic- early Cretaceous). The studied brachiopod fauna, about 400 specimens, was collected from the 150-m-thick uppermost part of the greenschist sequences in the Kulluk Hill area, Elkondu village, 25 km east of Kangal. Some …

Saturated Fat Intake Is Associated With Lung Function In Individuals With Airflow Obstruction: Results From Nhanes 2007⁻2012, Kasey Cornell, Morshed Alam, Elizabeth Lyden, Lisa Wood, Tricia D. Levan, Tara M. Nordgren, Kristina L. Bailey, Corrine K. Hanson

Journal Articles: Biostatistics

Nutritional status is a well-recognized prognostic indicator in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); however, very little is known about the relationship between lung function and saturated fat intake. We used data from the cross-sectional National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) to assess the relationship between saturated fatty acid (SFA) intake and lung function in the general US adult population. Adults in NHANES (2007⁻2012) with pre-bronchodilator spirometry measurements and dietary SFA intake were included. Primary outcomes were lung function including forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV₁)

Stretching Hiv Treatment: A Replication Study Of Task Shifting In South Africa, Baojiang Chen, Morshed Alam

Journal Articles: Biostatistics

The Streamlining Tasks & Roles to Expand Treatment and Care for HIV (STRETCH) program was developed to increase the reach of antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV/AIDS patients in Sub-Saharan Africa by training nurses to prescribe, initiate, and maintain ART. Fairall and colleagues conducted a cluster-randomized trial to determine the effects/impact of STRETCH on patient health outcomes in South Africa between 2008 and 2010. The purpose of our replication study is to evaluate Fairall and colleagues' findings. We conducted push button and pure replication studies and measurement and estimation analyses (MEA). Our MEA validates the original findings: (1) overall, time to …

Pso Trained Hybrid Intelligent Classifier Using Wavelet And Statistical Features For Pipeline Leak Classification, Hanan A. R., Wael A., Ibraheem H. M. Al-Dosari Jan 2019

Pso Trained Hybrid Intelligent Classifier Using Wavelet And Statistical Features For Pipeline Leak Classification, Hanan A. R., Wael A., Ibraheem H. M. Al-Dosari

Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering

One of the main problems in the oil industrial field is the leakage in transporting pipelines due to its effect on human society , environment, and money loss. Therefore, the bottleneck for most researches in this subject is to minimize false alarm rate (FAR) for the adopted leak detection method. Although some recent methods succeed in classifying the existence or absence of the leak as a binary classification problem. But this paper proposed a novel leak detection technique which predicts the leak location and estimates its size within certain pre-defined ranges. In order to simulate the environmental conditions for real-time …

Speed Controller Of Three Phase Induction Motor Using Sliding Mode Controller, Dr.Farazdaq R., Walaa H. Jan 2019

Speed Controller Of Three Phase Induction Motor Using Sliding Mode Controller, Dr.Farazdaq R., Walaa H.

Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering

A Sliding Mode Control (SMC) with integral surface is employed to control the speed of Three-Phase Induction Motor in this paper. The strategy used is a modified field oriented control to control the IM drive system. The SMC is used to calculate the frequency required for generating three phase Voltage of Space vVector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) invertor. When the SMC is used with current controller, the quadratic component of stator current is estimated by the controller. Instead of using current controller, this paper proposed estimating the frequency of stator Voltage whereas the slip speed is representing a function of …

Holmes, Humility, And How Not To Kill Each Other, John D. Inazu Jan 2019

Holmes, Humility, And How Not To Kill Each Other, John D. Inazu

Scholarship@WashULaw

Oliver Wendell Holmes’s dissent in Abrams v. United States is one of the intellectual anchors of modern First Amendment doctrine. In the century since Abrams, we have witnessed changes in society, technology, and politics that have shaped and reshaped the contours of our First Amendment landscape. But not everything has changed — some aspects of our human experience remain remarkably similar to the context in which Holmes wrote. One unchanged aspect of the human condition is our inability to know with certainty. Confronted with this reality in his own day, Holmes at times gestured toward a foundationless relativism. But even …
