Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works
The article examines the implicit components in the meaning of semantically modified derivatives. Using the methods of componential analysis of definitions from various Russian explanatory and aspectual dictionaries, the implicit components in the sound verbs’ meanings are inventoried. The impact of the relevant implicit components on the synthesis process is examined; the dichotomy of the implicit components of meaning and corresponding synthesizing prefixes is identified. The productivity and typical colloquial usage of synthesized derivatives is demonstrated using data from the Russian National Corpus.

Conference papers
Tracking developments in the highly dynamic data-technology landscape are vital to keeping up with novel technologies and tools, in the various areas of Artificial Intelligence (AI). However, It is difficult to keep track of all the relevant technology keywords. In this paper, we propose a novel system that addresses this problem. This tool is used to automatically detect the existence of new technologies and tools in text, and extract terms used to describe these new technologies. The extracted new terms can be logged as new AI technologies as they are found on-the-fly in the web. It can be subsequently classified …

The Second Decade Of Numeracy: Entering The Seas Of Literacy, H. L. Vacher
Numeracy
This multipurpose editorial explores and tries to count the many types of literacy that are referred to by name in Wikipedia and Numeracy. Wikipedia’s Category:Literacy page identifies 44 kinds of literacy that are the subject of articles, ranging from numeracy and graphicacy to braille literacy and diaspora literacy. In addition, searching Google finds more than 30 adjective-literacy or noun-literacy collocations, including quantitative literacy, adult literacy, and document literacy, that do not have Wikipedia pages of their own but are mentioned on other Wikipedia pages. The sum puts this modest literacy count in line with the more than 70 bodies …

Minority Languages In Linguistic Landscape: The Case Of Medina In Saudi Arabia, Ali Aljohani
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Linguistic landscape (LL) is the linguistic objects that mark the public space (Ben-Rafael, Shohamy, Amara, & Trumper-Hecht,2006). This dissertation examined the LL of Medina, a holy city in Saudi Arabia. The study of linguistic landscape is a site-based research, meaning any study is most likely oriented by the nature of a research site and what important observations are found in that site. Accordingly, the LL study of Medina compelled us to pay attention to the role of religion. In addition, LL study has its inextricable links to multilingualism and language policy establishing it as a marker to a given community …

An Investigation Of Efl Learners Attitudes Toward Computer-Assisted Writing (Caw), Ahmed Almenei
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation studies attitudes of the Saudi university learners studying English as a Foreign Language (EFL) toward using the Computer-assisted Writing (CAW) applications, e.g., up-to-date versions of word processing programs, for doing English writing assignments. Research has confirmed that CAW applications, e.g., up-to-date versions of word processing program, have been utilized in and out of the class to supplement, but not to replace, the methods of learning and teaching writing. Previous studies have revealed that students attitude towards writing improves when they use the word processor. The current study aims at examining the hypotheses that the EFL learners have effective …

The participants were five ESL students who were enrolled in an intensive English program in the U.S. Four ESL teachers who taught the focal participants had also participated in the study. This study was conducted as a multiple case study in which data collected over the course of one academic semester and triangulated from multiple sources (i.e., participants interviews, weekly observations …
Exploring Teaching Intercultural Communicative Competence Among Saudi University Efl Teachers, Abdulrahman Alqefari
Exploring Teaching Intercultural Communicative Competence Among Saudi University Efl Teachers, Abdulrahman Alqefari
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Intercultural communicative competence (ICC) is an essential part of instruction in the diverse English as a Foreign or Second Language classroom (EFL, ESL), but instructors may not have sufficient knowledge, skills, or tools to be able to promote ICC in their classes. The Saudi Arabia Ministry of Education's (MoE) policies on teaching English encourage students to be cross-culturally competent, yet various people, including students and parents, have demonstrated concerns regarding the inclusion of Western values, beliefs, and cultures into the EFL curriculum. Consequently, these differences lead to teachers facing various content and process barriers in the EFL classroom.Using Byrams Intercultural …

Je Ne Vais Pas Parler Franais L'Cole: Preservation Of Cajun Culture Through Song, Nancy Carey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
AbstractThe purpose of this dissertation is to identify gaps in existing literature and records of Cajun folksongs, and to validate art song arrangements of this repertoire as a significant contribution to the canon of Cajun music. Though it continues to evolve and thrive as a commercial music genre, Cajun folk music is underrepresented in notated form. Transcription is vital to the preservation of folk music; however, previously published collections of these folksongs offer incomplete analysis. Composer Costas Dafnis arrangements of these songs for voice and piano have the potential to increase their exposure with classical musicians in professional and academic …
Towards Building Intelligent Collaborative Problem Solving Systems, Dipesh Gautam
Towards Building Intelligent Collaborative Problem Solving Systems, Dipesh Gautam
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Historically, Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) systems were more focused on Human Computer Interaction (HCI) issues, such as providing good experience of communication among the participants. Whereas, Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) focus both on HCI issues as well as leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques in their intelligent agents. This dissertation seeks to minimize the gap between CPS systems and ITS by adopting the methods used in ITS researches. To move towards this goal, we focus on analyzing interactions with textual inputs in online learning systems such as DeepTutor and Virtual Internships (VI) to understand their semantics and underlying intents. In order …

"Repossessing Her Self-Possession": A Lesson In Communal Pedagogy, Crystal Dekesha Harris
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation uses historical and literary mediums to assign pedagogical skills and communal benefit to African American female subjugation and labor typically associated with turmoil, ignominy, and struggle. Accordingly, Black feminist commentary (Lorde) is in conversation with theories of pedagogy (hooks, Ladson-Billings, Dewey) as well as literary philosophy and criticism (Bakhtin, Baraka) about the particular ways each field of study contribute to the analysis of twentieth century African American literature but also provide specific methods for Black communities to construct, implement, and sustain educational principles throughout time. Using the term communal pedagogy, I argue that African American culture has an …

Borders As Documents Of Violence: Colonial Cartography And The Epidermal Border, Kalemba Kimera Kizito
Borders As Documents Of Violence: Colonial Cartography And The Epidermal Border, Kalemba Kimera Kizito
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation analyzes the role of violence as constitutive and integral to border experiences. I focus on my lived experiences through transnational interaction with borders as analytical texts through which I realize that I am and have always been branded a Black man. I analyze the role of colonial cartography in the construction of the racialized body in Half of A Yellow Sun (2013) by relating the contrived mapping of Africa as symbolic of the mapping of race on to the black body. I also analyze the fixity of the colonial gaze in The Last King of Scotland (2006), focusing …

Deeper Understanding Of Tutorial Dialogues And Student Assessment, Nabin Nabin Maharjan

Bloom (1984) reported two standard deviation improvement with human tutoring which inspired many researchers to develop Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) that are as effective as human tutoring. However, recent studies suggest that the 2-sigma result was misleading and that current ITSs are as good as human tutors. Nevertheless, we can think of 2 standard deviations as the benchmark for tutoring effectiveness of ideal expert tutors. In the case of ITSs, there is still the possibility that ITSs could be better than humans. One way to improve the ITSs would be identifying, understanding, and then successfully implementing effective tutorial strategies that lead …
Marked Bodies And The Invention Of Tradition In Mobile, Alabamas Mardi Gras, Isabel Santos Machado Dos Santos Wildberger
Marked Bodies And The Invention Of Tradition In Mobile, Alabamas Mardi Gras, Isabel Santos Machado Dos Santos Wildberger
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This project uses Carnival as a vehicle to understand social and cultural changes in Mobile, Alabama in the Post-WWII period. Employing oral history and archival documentation and combining narrative with theory, it explores gender, class, race, sexuality, representation, space, and identity. Borrowing from the semiotic concept of markedness, from Eric Hobsbawms definition of invention of tradition, and from the debate over the function of Carnival either as a vehicle for inversion or affirmation of social norms and hierarchies, it argues that defiance and endorsement of normativity are not mutually exclusive. The process through which queer and/or African American Mobilian men …

Computational Thinking Self-Efficacy In High School Latin Language Learning, Dennis Clark Dickerson, Jr.
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Research suggests that computational thinking is a necessary skill exercised in STEM courses, non-STEM fields, and in everyday life. However, very little research has investigated the potential transfer of computational thinking self-efficacy available through classical Latin courses. This causal comparative study contrasted the computational thinking self-efficacy of computer science students with no exposure to Latin to computer science students with exposure to Latin at a Memphis all-boy high school. The independent variables were Latin language learning experience, i.e., up to 6 years total of Latin language learning (n = 33), versus 0 years of Latin language learning experience (n = …
The Impact Of Task Difficulty On Reading Comprehension Intervention With Computer Agents, Ying Fang
The Impact Of Task Difficulty On Reading Comprehension Intervention With Computer Agents, Ying Fang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
According to Vygotskys zone of proximal development (ZPD), students benefit from tasks that are difficult but can be achieved with the guidance of a skilled partner. This concept has often been implemented during the development of intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs), but there remains a need to empirically investigate the validity of this concept in reading comprehension interventions. Individual differences need to be considered in order to assign tasks to individual students with the right level of difficulty. Mixed results have emerged from previous research that specifically investigated the potential interaction between student attributes and ITSs on learning in the domain …

This dissertation explores both the complexities and transformative potential of Good Food networks to contribute to more just and sustainable food practices. By comparing two farmers markets with distinct cultural histories in Memphis, Tennessee, I examine how narratives of Good Food are constructed against the larger backdrop of the citys racial, social and cultural legacy and food economy, and how those narratives map onto the citys current socio-spatial construction. Employing Scollon and Scollons (2004) nexus analysis theoretical and methodological framework, I analyze both macro-level structures that shape local food systems (e.g. access to farmers markets) and micro-level structures that shape …

Novel Perspectives Of The Iraq War, Olivia R. Clark
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
My dissertation, "Novel Perspectives of the Iraq War," explores literary representations of the American occupation of Iraq. Responding to Roy Scrantons argument that the prevailing narrative of the traumatized veteran returning home from war with experiential knowledge (what David Buchanan calls combat gnosticism) has overshadowed other important perspectives, this project interrogates the manner in which cultural representations can both sustain and challenge national mythologies. Each of my chapters responds to a specific problem in our cultures popular narratives of war and argues that solutions to extant misperceptions are available via counternarratives. What connects these problems are their prevalence in the …

Watching highly-skilled experts in the midst of improvised performance can be a source of mystification and wonder. Understanding this mystery in more detail, especially for music, is a major motivation for my dissertation. Moreover, while there are multiple avenues through which one could explore improvisation, I will primarily utilize the tools of embodied cognitive science to help better understand it in general and bebop jazz improvisation in particular. I furthermore consider possible ways to define improvisation as an essential precondition of my project. In what follows, I will not defend one type of embodied approach over all alternatives. Instead, I will …

I Am A Quiet Struggler: Conceptualizing The Identities Of Muslim American High School Students Within The Context Of Islamophobia., Wesam M. Salem
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The spread of Islamophobia in the U.S. positioned Muslims as different and inferior to American society and racialized their experiences by subjecting them to narratives of prejudices and stereotypes. This postcolonial interview study examined how Muslim American high school students conceptualized and negotiated their racialized identities within the context of Islamophobia and how the negotiation processes informed their learning in school, particularly the construction of their mathematics identity. The study built on postcolonial theorists, mathematics research, and decolonizing approaches to research to interrogate and (un)settle traditional and predetermined interviewing practices. Participants included six high school students (2 males and four …
