Curiosity Over Kindness: Discovering The Importance Of Student Assets, Dana Wolfson Jan 2019

Curiosity Over Kindness: Discovering The Importance Of Student Assets, Dana Wolfson

Graduate Student Independent Studies

This research explores the argument that it is important to know students well through understanding the assets students bring with them to school. I aim to explore the kinds of assets students bring with them to their experiences at school, why it is important for teachers to get to know and make use of students’ assets, and the methods teachers can use to get to know student assets. Undergirding this exploration of the importance of student assets in school is the through line that the racial, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of both teacher and student deeply impact the ways that …

Andraé Edward Crouch's Musical And Theological Pursuits: An Analysis Of Three Pieces From The Just Andraé Album, Stephen Michael Newby

Seattle Pacific Seminary Theses

Each generation of musical artists challenges its audience according to the needs and the tenor of the times. Composer and musical prodigy Andraé Edward Crouch is known as the father of Modern/Contemporary African American Gospel music. Crouch infused traditional gospel, black hymnody, elements of art song, concert music, jazz and R & B forms into his canon. This thesis explores Crouch’s work through the intersection of ideas on theology, imagination, race, poverty systems, liberty and social justice, as well as his convictions for reaching “the lost”, and challenging the church to evolve spiritually towards a greater advancement of God’s Kingdom. …

The purpose of this exploratory study is to measure the perception of faculty at one institution regarding how or if budget shortfalls impacted shared governance and academic freedom, in addition to possibly stifling or eliminating …

Rightsizing Open Access Journals Project - List Of Open Access Journals Added Or Updated In 2017 With The Effect On Usage Thru Mid-2019 (Data File), Barbara M. Pope

Faculty Submissions

Academic libraries have long had print journal collections to support the university’s discovery and research needs. However, they are also continually challenged with needs for relevant content, cost control, and space availability; some academic libraries have downsized their print journal collections as a result. Many academic libraries are replacing some print journal subscriptions with online subscriptions and supplementing with open access journals. Pittsburg State University’s (PSU) Axe Library faces the challenge of providing journal access in order to support the university’s needs and stay on budget. To that end, PSU drastically weeded its print journals in 2016 and later began …

The Relationship Between Participation In Community-Level Service-Learning And Career Plans To Practice In Underserved Areas Among 4th-Year Medical Students, Felicia Bolden Mobley Jan 2019

The Relationship Between Participation In Community-Level Service-Learning And Career Plans To Practice In Underserved Areas Among 4th-Year Medical Students, Felicia Bolden Mobley

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Service-learning is a form of experiential learning that allows students to combine knowledge acquired in the classroom with community-level experiences. In medical education, service-learning provides medical students the opportunity to apply clinical knowledge to health-related experiences within communities in an effort to prepare them to address the health needs of communities after they graduate. Research shows that without service-learning opportunities, some medical students may lack a level of compassion and empathy that is necessary to treat medically underserved patients.

A secondary data analysis was conducted using 4th-year medical students’ survey responses on the Association of American Medical Colleges Graduation Questionnaire …

School Principals' Perspectives On School Psychologists As Systems-Level Consultants, Brandon J. Wood Jan 2019

School Principals' Perspectives On School Psychologists As Systems-Level Consultants, Brandon J. Wood

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the existing discrepancy between school psychologist engagement in systems-level consultation and the ascribed importance of such practice is likely multifaceted. Barriers, such as time spent in assessment-related activities, a lack of training in consultation, and high student-to-school psychologist ratios, among others, are known to reduce the possibilities and opportunities for school psychologist participation in systems-level consultation (Cramer & Rosenfield, 2003; Curtis, March, Castillo, Stockslager, & Gelley, 2012). An underexplored potential barrier for school psychologist entry into systems-level activity is a school's principal. Most studies of Educational professionals' perceptions of school psychologists were conducted over a decade ago (e.g., Gilman …

The Lived Experiences Of Transgender Higher Education Professionals, Jessica L. Ward Jan 2019

The Lived Experiences Of Transgender Higher Education Professionals, Jessica L. Ward

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of transgender higher Education professionals. There have been great strides in the acceptance and inclusion of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals. However, the acceptance level of transgender individuals has not reached the same level as the LGB community. Utilizing a qualitative phenomenological approach, participants who identified as transgender were interviewed to understand their experiences as professionals in higher Education institutions. As a result of the semi-structured interview process, six shared experiences emerged: understanding identity, transitioning in higher Education, job search, mental health, rejection, and support. From these categories three …

Joseph Knew First: Moses, The Egyptian Son, Nathan J. Arp Jan 2019

Joseph Knew First: Moses, The Egyptian Son, Nathan J. Arp

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

After about 1500 years of slumber, ancient Egyptian was brought back to life in the early 19th century, when scholars deciphered hieroglyphs. T his revolutionary success opened the door to a reevaluation of history from the viewpoint of ancient Egypt. In the wake of this new knowledge, the first scholar posited the idea in 1849 that the name of Moses stemmed from the Egyptian word for child. Subsequently, this idea was refined, and currently the majority of scholars believe Moses’s name comes from the Egyptian verb “to beget,” which is also the root for the Egyptian word for child, or …

“Come Unto Me” As A Technical Gospel Term, Noel B. Reynolds Jan 2019

“Come Unto Me” As A Technical Gospel Term, Noel B. Reynolds

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The Book of Mormon repeatedly outlines a six-part definition of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, but most writers within the book refer to only two or three of them at a time in a biblical rhetorical device called merismus. Throughout the scriptures, the term “come unto Christ” in its many forms is used as part of these merisms to represent enduring to the end. This article examines the many abbreviations of the gospel, connects the phrase “come unto Christ” with enduring to the end, and discusses some of the alternate uses of these types of phrases.

The Māori Latter-Day Saint Historical Narrative: Additions And Amendments, Louis Midgley Jan 2019

The Māori Latter-Day Saint Historical Narrative: Additions And Amendments, Louis Midgley

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Selwyn Kātene has again assembled twelve essays written by the descendants of famous Māori Latter-day Saints. This volume flows from a revival of interest in the ground and content of the faith of early Māori Saints that began in the late 1990s. In various ways the essays in this volume add to and amend what has previously been known about what began unexpectedly on Christmas Day in 1882, when the first group of Māori joined the Church of Jesus Christ. Not only did the Māori have Seers who opened the way, some of those elite Māori men, who had been …

The Building Of The Toyko Temple, Conan P. Story Jan 2019

The Building Of The Toyko Temple, Conan P. Story

Mormon Pacific Historical Society

This is a story of the building of the Tokyo Temple, the first temple built in Asia by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is not a history, although I hope it will shed some historical light on a few aspects of this magnificent temple. It is simply my story—what I saw and did, and what I learned about this House of the Lord as it rose from the ground and was dedicated in 1980. I like to tell this story starting in 1948 because that is when the Lord began to reveal His plan for where …

Online Learning Through Libguides For English Language Learners: A Case Study And Best Practices, Megan Hodge Jan 2019

Online Learning Through Libguides For English Language Learners: A Case Study And Best Practices, Megan Hodge

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

Many of the international students in the U.S. first experience American education through English language programs, so the cultural norms taught by these programs are vital to the academic success of these students: without them, students struggle to recognize plagiarism in their writing, find reliable sources, and more, resulting in lower grades and honor code sanctions including expulsion. Librarians are uniquely equipped to meet this instructional need. This chapter introduces best practices for making the most of these opportunities for significant impact via Springshare's LibGuides platform.

"More Like You": Disrupting Native-Speakerism Through A Multimodal Online Intercultural Exchange, Brooke R. Schreiber Jan 2019

"More Like You": Disrupting Native-Speakerism Through A Multimodal Online Intercultural Exchange, Brooke R. Schreiber

Publications and Research

Research over the past decades has demonstrated the harmful effects of native speakerism in English language teaching, including how perceptions of native speaker status are deeply intertwined with race and national identity. Recently, scholars have begun to investigate how teacher training programs might push back on native speakerism by providing classroom opportunities for students to challenge their assumptions about native speakers. This article discusses the disruptive potential of an online intercultural learning activity in which MA TESL students in Sri Lanka communicated through digital platforms with undergraduates in New York City. Drawing on data from interviews and students’ online writing, …

Speech-Language Pathologists' Collaboration With Interpreters: Results Of A Current Survey In California, Terry Saenz, Henriette W. Langdon

Faculty Publications

One of the challenges of bilingual speech and language assessment, intervention, and conferencing is the effective collaboration with interpreters in such interpreted interactions when the professional does not share the same spoken language with the client. A survey of California speech-language pathologists who were members of the California Speech-Language-Hearing Association (CSHA) was performed to obtain information on their training to collaborate with, experiences with, and opinions of interpreters. In addition, these professionals were surveyed about the training of the interpreters and suggestions for improvement in interpreted interactions. Findings from 229 participants indicated that: (a) Most of the speech-language pathologists had …

State repressions of minority groups threaten human rights, undermining their development and survival. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, countless minority groups found themselves living in a new country as a result of annexation, redefined territorial boundaries and migration, with some suffering repression from the states in which they now resided. This thesis examines the interactions and conditions necessary for such repressions from the state to take place with the central research question: why and how might a state, having just acquired an ethnic or minority group, repress the said group following its acquisition. Through the combination of Benedict …

Cross-Cultural Adaptation Of An Instrument To Address The Mental Health Needs In Nepal, Dene S. Berman Jan 2019

Cross-Cultural Adaptation Of An Instrument To Address The Mental Health Needs In Nepal, Dene S. Berman

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Nepal has had devastating earthquakes compounded by economic struggles, social and political crises. There is evidence of significant psychological distress but few mental health resources. The current project’s aim is to provide the people of Nepal who are experiencing emotional distress with information about improving their lives in a way that otherwise would not be available in rural health centers. For this purpose, a culturally sensitive and valid adaptation of Healthy Habits for Emotional Well-being into Nepali was created following World Health Organization guidelines. Implications for its use were discussed, along with possible future directions for continued outreach efforts.

Knowledge-Enabled Entity Extraction, Hussein S. Al-Olimat

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Information Extraction (IE) techniques are developed to extract entities, relationships, and other detailed information from unstructured text. The majority of the methods in the literature focus on designing supervised machine learning techniques, which are not very practical due to the high cost of obtaining annotations and the difficulty in creating high quality (in terms of reliability and coverage) gold standard. Therefore, semi-supervised and distantly-supervised techniques are getting more traction lately to overcome some of the challenges, such as bootstrapping the learning quickly. This dissertation focuses on information extraction, and in particular entities, i.e., Named Entity Recognition (NER), from multiple domains, …

Servant-Leadership In Higher Education: A Look Through Students’ Eyes, Iqbal Alshammari, Florentina Halimi, Cathy Daniel, Meshari Thaher Alhusaini

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Competing in the global marketplace requires organizations to promote their leaders as servant-leaders by replacing the old rules of traditional leadership with the ‘top of the leadership pyramid. By focusing on the growth and well-being of people and the communities to which they belong, servantleadership appears as a promising model to solve problems and promote personal development.
