Cancer Blog Narratives: The Experience Of Under-Fifty Women With Breast Cancer During Different Times After Diagnosis, Maria Luisa Martino, Anna Gargiulo, Daniela Lemmo, Giorgia Margherita

The Qualitative Report

The recent literature shows an increase of breast cancer in women under 50, however still few are the studies which analyse the impact of the disease in this specific target age. This study aims at exploring the most prevalent topics in Italian cancer blogs of women who have received a breast cancer diagnosis before the age of 50, in order to understand their experience of illness and the characteristics of women’s narrations at different times after diagnosis (1 year, 2 years, 3 years). Academic Discourse Socialization, Scaler Politics Of English, And Racialization In Study Abroad: A Critical Autoethnography, Pramod K. Sah

The Qualitative Report

In this age of rising animosity to newcomers in host societies, study abroad students are often reported to receive maltreatment and discrimination. To this end, I conducted a critical autoethnographic study that responds to the trajectory of my English language learning in the UK and explores my adjustment difficulties and factors such as racialized linguistic discrimination. It also reveals the types of agency that I employed in the process of academic discourse socialization and unpacks causes and processes of renegotiating and reconstructing my identity as a learner and user of the English language. The data for this study was gathered …

Media Ethnography: Demands Alternative, Bishal Kumar Bhandari Mr

The Qualitative Report

The heart and soul of ethnography lies in anthropological study within specific caste, ethnicity, and gender. In mass media research, the anthropological ethnography dominates through some of the aspects that focuses on geographical locations and ethnicity which is not relevant in the age of media and technology. The mass media has gained its own gravity, uniqueness, and distinctiveness at present as it fulfills the need and interest of individuals/society. As such fieldwork, participants, and positioning a debate within the realm of “anthropological ethnography” is not sufficient to understand the subjectivities of mass media. In such a context, this article analyzes …

Sino-African Philosophy: A Re-“Constructive Engagement”, Paul A. Dottin

Comparative Philosophy

“Constructive-Engagement” is a meta-philosophical and meta-methodological “strategy” suggested by Chinese and comparative philosophy scholar Bo Mou for analyzing and enriching philosophical exchange. In this paper, I will use this strategy towards an end, on a scale, and with a topic not attempted before. I will use it as a “template” for redesigning a poorly developing area of cross-cultural comparison I call Sino-African reflective studies (SARS). My goal in this work-in-progress is to design a plan for reconstituting SARS as Sino-African philosophy (SAP), an inclusive yet coherent field of research and innovation unified through organizing principles. I will design the overhaul …

Transdisciplinarity At The Boundaries: Exploring A Sylvan Metaphor For Health, Peter J. Whitehouse Jan 2019

Transdisciplinarity At The Boundaries: Exploring A Sylvan Metaphor For Health, Peter J. Whitehouse

Faculty Scholarship

Transdisciplinarity is an action oriented intellectual and ethical endeavor to address complex ecological, economic, and political challenges that humans face. Language is viewed as a powerful tool for necessary cultural change. Blending art and science looking for the difficult to define but critically important hidden spaces between apparently rigid conceptual structures is a core of transdisciplinarity. Metaphor is a particular powerful tool for examining boundaries and developing creative blends of structures and processes. Forests are biologically and culturally critical to life on the planet. In this paper we explore, a performance character named Sylvanus, the Tree Doctor, named after the …

Repeated Shocks And Preferences For Redistribution, Giovanni Gualtieri, Marcella Nicolini, Fabio Sabatini, Luca Zamparelli Jan 2019

Repeated Shocks And Preferences For Redistribution, Giovanni Gualtieri, Marcella Nicolini, Fabio Sabatini, Luca Zamparelli

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

A society that believes wealth to be determined by random “luck” rather than by merit, demands more redistribution. The theoretical literature shows that any increase in the volatility of income caused by unpredictable adverse shocks implies a higher support for redistribution. We present evidence of this behavior by exploiting a natural experiment provided by the L’Aquila earthquake in 2009, which hit a large area of Central Italy through a series of destructive shakes over eight days. Matching detailed information on the ground acceleration registered during each shock with survey data about individual opinions on redistribution we show that the average …

Intuition, Evidence, And Carroll's Theory Of Narrative, Jonathan Howard Frome Jan 2019

Intuition, Evidence, And Carroll's Theory Of Narrative, Jonathan Howard Frome

staff_fulltext

Over the last thirty years, Noël Carroll has elaborated his theory of erotetic narration, which holds that most films have a narrative structure in which early scenes raise questions and later scenes answer them. Carroll’s prolific publishing about this theory and his expansion of the theory to issues such as audience engagement, narrative closure, and film genre have bolstered its profile, but, despite its high visibility in the field, virtually no other scholars have either criticized or built upon the theory. This article uses Carroll’s own criteria for evaluating film theories—evidentiary support, falsifiability, and explanatory power—to argue that erotetic theory’s …

This manifesto, discussed by 20 scholars, representing diverse lines of creativity research, marks a conceptual shift within the field. Socio-cultural approaches have made substantial contributions to the concept of creativity over recent decades and today can provide a set of propositions to guide our understanding of past research and to generate new directions of inquiry and practice. These propositions are urgently needed in response to the transition from the Information Society to the Post-Information Society. Through the propositions outlined here, we aim to build common ground and invite the community of creativity researchers and practitioners to reflect up, study, and …

Of Vice And Virtue: Religious And Moral Rhetoric In The Business Press And The Economic Crisis, Eric Patton Jan 2019

Of Vice And Virtue: Religious And Moral Rhetoric In The Business Press And The Economic Crisis, Eric Patton

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

Theologians have noted that there are links that exist between religion and business in terms of terminology and imagery. Researchers in business ethics have regularly highlighted religion as a lens through which ethics issues can be understood. Researchers in social psychology have underlined the role of religion for coping with tragedy and uncertainty. The purpose of this study is to bridge these three ideas by exploring religious and moral rhetoric surrounding the financial crisis of the late 2000s. Through a content analysis of news stories in the New York Times concerning the economy and finance, this study demonstrates that in …

German Prisoners Of War In Canada, 1940–1946: An Autobiography-Based Essay, Franz-Karl Stanzel

Canadian Military History

The four years I spent in British and Canadian POW Camps offered ample time to study English Literature. This experience in particular had a decisive effect on my later career as university teacher of English literature. It also helped me to become one of the first Anglicists at German and Austrian universities, who included Canadian literature in his syllabus and a founder member of the German Association for Canadian Studies. In this essay based on my war-autobiography, I describe the experience of German POWs in Canada. I was captured in 1942 when serving as third officer of the watch on …

1907 - Handbook Of American Indians North Of Mexico, Part I; Frederick Webb Hodge

Miscellaneous Publications

Lack of knowledge of the aborigines and of their languages led to many errors on the part of the early explorers and settlers. Soon after the organization of the Bureau of American Ethnology in 1879, the work of recording a tribal synonymy was formally assigned to Henry W. Henshaw. The 2,500 tribal names and synonyms appearing in this list were taken chiefly from James Mooney's manuscript; the linguistic classification was the result of the work that the Bureau had been conducting under Henshaw's supervision. The handbook contains a descriptive list of the stocks, confederacies, tribes, tribal divisions, and settlements north …

“Ich Bin Ein Betweener”: The Concept Of The Existential Migrant In Steffen Möller’S Travel Narratives About Poland, Jakub Kazecki Jan 2019

“Ich Bin Ein Betweener”: The Concept Of The Existential Migrant In Steffen Möller’S Travel Narratives About Poland, Jakub Kazecki

All Faculty Scholarship

This article discusses the German-Polish author Steffen Möller and his self-presentation as a “betweener” in the works Viva Polonia (2008), Expedition to the Poles (2012), and Viva Warszawa (2015). The article construes it as a central concept of Möller’s narratives about Poland by connecting it with Greg Madison’s phenomenon of “existential migration.” The analysis of the motif of train travel in Möller’s oeuvre points out the author’s rendering of Marc Augé’s “non-places” as spatial zones of transition and heterotopias, which accommodate shifting senses of time and place, allow for the subverting of established social hierarchies and narrative structures, and are …

Understanding Face And Shame: A Servant-Leadership And Face Management Model, Jiying Song Jan 2019

Understanding Face And Shame: A Servant-Leadership And Face Management Model, Jiying Song

Faculty Publications - George Fox Digital

Clergy can have a negative impact on churches and other individuals when they knowingly or unknowingly attempt to save face, that is, try to protect their standing or reputation. The desire to gain face and the fear of losing face and feeling ashamed will likely permeate clergy’s decision-making processes without even being noticed. This study explores the essence of face and face management and the relationship between face management and two characteristics of servant-leadership—awareness and healing—in both Chinese and American churches through the methodology of hermeneutic phenomenology. Prior to this study, to my knowledge, no hermeneutic phenomenological research of face …
