Missing The (Turning) Point: The Erosion Of Democracy At An American University, Anthony Fucci, Theresa Catalano Feb 2019

Missing The (Turning) Point: The Erosion Of Democracy At An American University, Anthony Fucci, Theresa Catalano

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

On August 25, 2017, student members of Turning Point USA (TPUSA), a right-wing conservative organization who advocates for smaller government and free market enterprise, recruited on the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL) campus. Members of the UNL community protested nearby. Part of the protest was recorded on video and released to social media leading to harsh public criticism that accused the university of restricting free speech and being an unsafe environment for conservative students. Drawing on cognitive linguistics (e.g. metonymy, framing) and multimodal critical discourse analysis (MCDA), this paper explores how the TPUSA incident at UNL was recontextualized in local and …

Educator’S Perceptions Of The Impacts Of School Violence On Caribbean Societies, Wendell C. Wallace, Anthony R. Rosales Feb 2019

Educator’S Perceptions Of The Impacts Of School Violence On Caribbean Societies, Wendell C. Wallace, Anthony R. Rosales

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

Globally, school violence plays an ominous role in the education process as it has been widely recognized as having negative impacts. In this context, education in a violence-free environment is a challenge facing some schools, students and teachers in the Caribbean. Internationally, school violence is a relatively well researched area, however, both internationally and in the Caribbean, educator’s perceptions of the impacts of school violence is relatively understudied. This study explores educator’s perceptions of the impacts of school violence on Caribbean societies and offers an interpretive exploration of these perceptions. Self-administered questionnaires were randomly distributed to educators in Antigua and …

Artificial Intelligence Hits The Barrier Of Meaning, Melanie Mitchell Feb 2019

Artificial Intelligence Hits The Barrier Of Meaning, Melanie Mitchell

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Today’s AI systems sorely lack the essence of human intelligence: Understanding the situations we experience, being able to grasp their meaning. The lack of humanlike understanding in machines is underscored by recent studies demonstrating lack of robustness of state-of-the-art deep-learning systems. Deeper networks and larger datasets alone are not likely to unlock AI’s “barrier of meaning”; instead the field will need to embrace its original roots as an interdisciplinary science of intelligence.

Reflection On And For Actions: Probing Into English Language Art Teachers' Personal And Professional Experiences With English Language Learners, Huili Hong, Karin Keith, Renee Rice Moran Feb 2019

Reflection On And For Actions: Probing Into English Language Art Teachers' Personal And Professional Experiences With English Language Learners, Huili Hong, Karin Keith, Renee Rice Moran

ETSU Faculty Works

Effective ELL teaching and learning is profoundly influenced by the teachers' personal experiences and personalities (Farrell, 2016), their experience as language learners as well as language teachers (Farrell, 2007), and their beliefs about learning and teaching a second language (Farrell, 2015; Farrell & Ives, 2015). This study honored and examined in-depth the often-discounted stories/reflective narratives of our teachers. This paper reports a qualitative cases study that explores three veteran teachers' reflection on their personal and professional experiences with ELLs for self-discovery over years (Cirocki & Farrell, 2017) so that they can further reflect for their future actions with ELLs (Burns …

A Scientometric Look At Mathematics Education From Scopus Database, Miguel Cruz Ramirez, Rafael Armando Rodriguez Devesa Feb 2019

A Scientometric Look At Mathematics Education From Scopus Database, Miguel Cruz Ramirez, Rafael Armando Rodriguez Devesa

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The present work offers a characterization of the development of mathematics education, based on scientometric indicators. The study analyzes 5633 documents registered in the Scopus database which are all related to research in mathematics education. The main results show an exponential increase on the scientific productivity, a tendency to increase collaborative work over individual work, a greater impact per index of the cited references during the last two decades, a high level of international collaboration, a certain concentration of the publications on a reduced group of investigators in some international impact journals, and the existence of 17 invisible colleagues that …

Rethinking Foreign Missions: How Churches Can Engage In Global Missionary Work Without Leaving Their Communities, Stuart Alan Cocanougher Feb 2019

Rethinking Foreign Missions: How Churches Can Engage In Global Missionary Work Without Leaving Their Communities, Stuart Alan Cocanougher

Doctor of Ministry

For three hundred years, the modern missions movement has established a paradigm in which evangelical churches, denominations, and parachurch agencies have recruited, trained, funded, and sent missionaries around the world. Taking seriously Christ’s command to reach the nations with the gospel, U.S. churches spend millions of dollars each year to send a few select missionaries to faraway nations, while most Christians are not engaged in cross-cultural ministry. But the world has changed. Now there are millions of foreigners living in the United States. I propose that evangelical church leaders consider a new strategy that involves training American Christians to minister …

Renewing The Jesus Movement In The Episcopal Church: Weaving Good News Into Spiritual Formation, Robert Swope Feb 2019

Renewing The Jesus Movement In The Episcopal Church: Weaving Good News Into Spiritual Formation, Robert Swope

Doctor of Ministry

The Episcopal Church today experiences continuing decline in membership and new challenges to making Christ Jesus fully known. Research1 reveals a significant number of members desire to understand scripture better, experience the mystery of the Eucharist, learn how to deepen their spiritual journey, and encourage clergy to deepen their journey as well. With the departure of many Evangelicals, the Church has lost its comprehensiveness.2 This affects how leadership sees spiritual formation. At the same time, laity have expressed a desire for how to engage in a deeper prayer life.

Two solutions address these issues. Centering prayer explores silent, imageless contemplation …

Multicultural Teacher Education Matters, Reginald Todd, Jacqueline Smith

The Journal of the Research Association of Minority Professors

This article focuses on the impact the demographic change in the student population in current K-12 classrooms has had on teacher education programs as it pertains to the preparation of culturally responsive preservice teachers. There exists an extensive body of literature that posits that the increase of cultural diversity in our current classrooms should be understood as a call for new teaching approaches that promote multicultural awareness among teacher educators to develop preservice teachers who exhibit culturally responsive teaching practices, behaviors, and attitudes. This comprehensive review of literature explored the current research on multicultural teacher education programs, and more specifically …

Comparelda: A Topic Model For Document Comparison, Maksim Tkachenko, Hady Wirawan Lauw Feb 2019

Comparelda: A Topic Model For Document Comparison, Maksim Tkachenko, Hady Wirawan Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A number of real-world applications require comparison of entities based on their textual representations. In this work, we develop a topic model supervised by pairwise comparisons of documents. Such a model seeks to yield topics that help to differentiate entities along some dimension of interest, which may vary from one application to another. While previous supervised topic models consider document labels in an independent and pointwise manner, our proposed Comparative Latent Dirichlet Allocation (CompareLDA) learns predictive topic distributions that comply with the pairwise comparison observations. To fit the model, we derive a maximum likelihood estimation method via augmented variational approximation …

Effects Of Phonomotor Treatment On Discourse Production, Joann P. Silkes, Gerasimos Fergadiotis, Rebecca Hunting Pompon, Janaki Torrence, Diane L. Kendall

Speech and Hearing Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Aphasia is an acquired language disorder that makes it difficult for people to produce and comprehend language, with all people with aphasia (PWA) demonstrating difficulty accessing and selecting words (anomia). While aphasia treatments typically focus on a single aspect of language, such as word retrieval, the ultimate goal of aphasia therapy is to improve communication, which is best seen at the level of discourse.

Aims: This retrospective study investigated the effects of one effective anomia therapy, Phonomotor Treatment (PMT), on discourse production.

Methods & Procedures: Twenty-six PWA participated in 60 h of PMT, which focuses on …

The Anatomy Of An Insult: Popular Derogatory Terms Connote Important Individual Differences In Agreeableness/Antagonism, Courtland S. Hyatt, Jessica L. Maples-Keller, Chelsea E. Sleep, Donald R. Lynam, Joshua D. Miller

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

In the current series of studies, we investigate the psychosocial connotations of common insults. In Studies 1 and 2, we investigated the most frequently used insults to denigrate men and women (asshole, dick, bitch), and generated trait profiles that can be considered prototypical of each insult. In Studies 3 and 4, we examined how these insults are relevant to other key indicators of interpersonal functioning, including aggression, social information processing, personality disorders, and substance use. We also gathered thin-slice and informant reports. Each of the insults was associated with trait Antagonism, as well as other behaviors that comprise Antagonism’s nomological …

A History Of Yugoslavia, Marie-Janine Calic Feb 2019

A History Of Yugoslavia, Marie-Janine Calic

Purdue University Press Book Previews

Why did Yugoslavia fall apart? Was its violent demise inevitable? Did its population simply fall victim to the lure of nationalism? How did this multinational state survive for so long, and where do we situate the short life of Yugoslavia in the long history of Europe in the twentieth century? A History of Yugoslavia provides a concise, accessible, comprehensive synthesis of the political, cultural, social, and economic life of Yugoslavia—from its nineteenth-century South Slavic origins to the bloody demise of the multinational state of Yugoslavia in the 1990s.

Social Media Mining For Journalism, Arkaitz Zubiaga, Bahareh Heravi, Jisun An, Haewoon Kwak Feb 2019

Social Media Mining For Journalism, Arkaitz Zubiaga, Bahareh Heravi, Jisun An, Haewoon Kwak

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The exponential growth of social media as a central communication practice, and its agility in capturing and announcing breaking news events more rapidly than traditional media, has changed the journalistic landscape: social media has been adopted as a significant source by professional journalists, and conversely, citizens are able to use social media as a form of direct reportage. This brings along new opportunities for newsrooms and journalists by providing new means for newsgathering through access to a wealth of citizen reportage and updates about current affairs, as well as an additional showcase for news dissemination.

A Comparative Study Of Spoken Word Poetry And Its Literary Counter-Part, Haidy Tarek Zakaria Feb 2019

A Comparative Study Of Spoken Word Poetry And Its Literary Counter-Part, Haidy Tarek Zakaria

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis discusses the contrast between spoken word and literary poetry, bearing in mind the differences in imagery, allusions and performance methods. Though both are fall under the same genre, the differences between them show as they are compared. There are many similarities between the two and the differences are not clear cut, however, upon closer inspection, one finds that the use of metaphor, and similes differ from one form to another. The fact that spoken word poetry uses performance as part of the poem also casts a difference between the two forms.

Brace For Impact: The Effects Of Victim Impact Evidence And Judicial Instructions On Juror Memory Distortion And Sentencing Decisions In Capital Trials, Auset E. Alexander Feb 2019

Brace For Impact: The Effects Of Victim Impact Evidence And Judicial Instructions On Juror Memory Distortion And Sentencing Decisions In Capital Trials, Auset E. Alexander

Student Theses

The utilization of visual evidence in the courtroom has increased exponentially in an effort to portray additional information that cannot otherwise be established via forensic evidence and expert testimony. According to Rule 403 of the Federal Rules of Evidence (1984), visual evidence may be permitted in court if the prejudicial value does not significantly outweigh the probative value. The admissibility of visual evidence however, becomes controversial when combined with victim impact statements (VIS) during the penalty phase of capital trials.

Previous research has indicated that jurors are often unable to perceive emotional testimony and subsequently make objective sentencing decisions that …

Between Reparations And Repair: Assessing The Work Of The Icc Trust Fund For Victims Under Its Assistance Mandate, Anne Dutton, Fionnuala Ní Aoláin Feb 2019

Between Reparations And Repair: Assessing The Work Of The Icc Trust Fund For Victims Under Its Assistance Mandate, Anne Dutton, Fionnuala Ní Aoláin

Chicago Journal of International Law

The practice of international justice has made a significant shift from narrowly focused criminal accountability to a broader and more holistic understanding encompassing the totality of victims’ justice needs. In particular, international criminal justice is concerned with victims of mass atrocity crimes, whose needs are profound and whose capacities are limited by the experiences of gross and systematic violence. These needs include individual and communal capacity building to engage in criminal processes as well as remedy and repair in the aftermath of criminal procedures. The Trust Fund for Victims represents, in many ways, the epicenter of this shift in international …

Ideology And Pragmatism: Discourse Factors In Infrastructure Development In Indonesia’S Jokowi-Jk Era, Fredick Boven Ekayanta

Jurnal Politik

The discussion about development discourse in a country talking about how an idea affect economic policies. In Indonesia, the development discourse continues to change depending on the ruling regime. After the reformation, the dominant discourse is a neoliberal one that minimizes the role of the state in development. During the reign of Jokowi-JK, however, the role of the state strengthened. The government plans to build a massive infrastructure of the physical economy. The government legitimized its choice of action as the implementation of the Pancasila and Trisakti ideologies. Using the theories of Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe, this article argues …

Does Early Active Bilingualism Enhance Inhibitory Control And Monitoring? A Propensity-Matching Analysis, Andree Hartanto, Hwajin Yang Feb 2019

Does Early Active Bilingualism Enhance Inhibitory Control And Monitoring? A Propensity-Matching Analysis, Andree Hartanto, Hwajin Yang

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Prior research suggesting that longer bilingual experience benefits inhibitory control and monitoring has been criticized for a lack of control over confounding variables. We addressed this issue by using a propensity-score matching procedure that enabled us to match early and late bilinguals on 18 confounding variables-for example, demographic characteristics, immigration status, fitness, extracurricular training, motivation, and emotionality-that have been shown to influence cognitive control. Before early and late bilinguals were matched (N = 196), we found early active bilingual advantages in flanker effects (in accuracy), global accuracy, and sensitivity (d') on the Attention Network Test for Interaction and Vigilance and …

Shifting Policies In Conflict Arenas: A Cosine Similarity And Text Mining Analysis Of Turkey’S Syria Policy, 2012-2016, Brendon J. Cannon, Mikiyasu Nakayama, Daisuke Sasaki, Ash Rossiter

Journal of Strategic Security

Turkish policy towards the Syrian civil war, as operationalized in relation to the implementation of no-fly zones, safe zones or buffer zones, has been the subject of much debate among scholars. As the number of foreign states acting in Syria has steadily increased since the onset of the crisis, Turkish policies have similarly shifted. In order to make sense of Turkey’s actions and reactions in the first five years of the Syrian civil war, this article attempts to draw lessons from quantitative methods and methodologies such as text mining, cosine similarity and cosine normalization of content from the Anadolu Agency …
