Possible Techniques For Translating Personal Names In Children And Young Adult Literature, Ani Susanti, A. Effendi Kadarisman
Possible Techniques For Translating Personal Names In Children And Young Adult Literature, Ani Susanti, A. Effendi Kadarisman
Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
Personal names are considered “specific words”and thus most often kept untranslated. However, as translation theory has developed, making it not only changing language features but also mediating cultural aspects, personal names are reconsidered in translation. Since they are culturally bound, this study aims to find out, when personal names are translated, what translation strategies apply and why. The data were collected from the weekly comic Donal Bebek (2018) as well as from the Hunger Games trilogy novels written by Suzanne Collins (2008, 2009, 2010) and translated by Hetih Rusli (2009, 2010, 2012). The findings show that translating personal names in …

Puisi Indonesia Lombok: Perlawanan Terhadap Hegemoni Tuan Guru, Dharma Satrya Hd
Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
This paper discusses Indoesian Lombok poem as a form of resistance toward Tuan Guru (master teacher) hegemony in Lombok. In 2000s, Tuan Guru achieved hegemonic position in Lombok. This paper uses the Gramsci hegemony theory because literary work is assumed to have hegemonic power. The result shows that the conception of Islam is formed in the story of Dewi Rengganis which tells the mixture of Arabic and Lombok Islam. Arabic Islam shows the aspects of form and Lombok Islam shows the substance. Tuan Guru comes with an orthodox Arabic discourse. The poem cleverly chooses the teacher as one way to …

Intertwined Markings: Metafiction In The Digital Age, Taylor Danielle Orgeron
Intertwined Markings: Metafiction In The Digital Age, Taylor Danielle Orgeron
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Intertwined Markings: Metafiction in the Digital Age maps the historical and thematic relationship between video games and contemporary works of metafiction first by detailing the intertwined histories of video games and contemporary metafiction, and then by applying new materialist and game studies methodologies to both video games and contemporary novels. Not only does the height of postmodern metafiction directly coincide with the introduction of home consoles and the golden age of arcade video games in the 1970s, but the same postmodern works considered to be canonical in metafiction studies are also those lauded as the first hypertexts in new media …

Translating Antimicrobial Resistance: A Case Study Of Context And Consequences Of Antibiotic-Related Communication In Three Northern Thai Villages, Nutcha Charoenboon, Marco J. Haenssgen, Penporn Warapikuptanun, Thipphaphone Xayavong, Yuzana Khine Zaw
Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) threatens to cause ten million deaths annually by 2050, making it a top item on the global health agenda. The current global policy response is multi-faceted, wherein behavioural dimensions like people’s medicine use are being predominantly addressed with education and communication campaigns. The social sciences literature suggests that cross-contextual translation of medical knowledge in global awareness campaigns can create misunderstandings and adverse behavioural responses. However, the consequences of AMR communication in low-income and middle-income contexts remain largely undocumented. In response to the empirical knowledge gap, this study presents the case study of educational activity in three northern …

Antecedents And Consequences Of Interviewer Pace: Assessing Interviewer Speaking Pace At The Question Level, Allyson L. Holbrook, Timothy P. Johnson, Evgenia Kapousouz, Young Ik Cho
Interviewer Workshop, 2019: Interviewers and Their Effects from a Total Survey Error Perspective
The pace at which interviewers read survey questions may vary considerably across interviewers (e.g., Cannell, Miller, & Oksenberg, 1981) and as a function of interviewer experience (Olson and Petchev, 2007). The pace at which interviews are conducted can influence respondent perceptions of the importance of interaction (Fowler, 1966). Interviewer training typically includes instructions to read questions slowly and clearly to respondents is based on the assumption that doing so maximizes data quality (e.g., Fowler and Mangione, 1990). In this research, we examine possible causes and consequences of interviewer pace using data from in person surveys conducted with respondents from four …

Interviewer Workshop, 2019: Interviewers and Their Effects from a Total Survey Error Perspective
In developing self-administered interviewing systems that go beyond text, survey designers are faced with choices about how to represent the interviewing agent. In speech-dialog systems like ACASI and IVR, designers must decide if the voice that presents the spoken questions is unambiguously male or female, whether the pronunciation is regionally marked, etc. Any visual representation of an interviewer (e.g., a photograph, a video) requires designers to choose features that visually convey demographic features like race, gender, age, etc. Here we investigate whether the representation of animated virtual interviewers (VIs) affects responses in the same way that analogous attributes of human …
The Accuracy And Utility Of Using Paradata To Detect Interviewer Question-Reading Deviations, Jennifer Kelley
The Accuracy And Utility Of Using Paradata To Detect Interviewer Question-Reading Deviations, Jennifer Kelley
Interviewer Workshop, 2019: Interviewers and Their Effects from a Total Survey Error Perspective
Deviations from reading survey questions exactly as worded may change the validity of the questions, thus increasing measurement error. Hence, organizations train their interviewers to read questions verbatim. To ensure interviewers are reading questions verbatim, organizations rely on interview recordings. However, this takes a significant amount of resources. Therefore, some organizations are using paradata generated by the survey software, specifically timestamps, to try to detect when interviewers’ deviate from reading the question verbatim.
To monitor interviewers’ question reading behavior using timestamps, some organizations estimate the expected question administration time to establish a minimum and maximum question administration time thresholds (QATT). …

Is Dns Ready For Ubiquitous Internet Of Things?, Zhiwei Yan, Hongtao Li, Sherali Zeadally, Yu Zheng, Guanggang Geng
Information Science Faculty Publications
The vision of the Internet of Things (IoT) covers not only the well-regulated processes of specific applications in different areas but also includes ubiquitous connectivity of more generic objects (or things and devices) in the physical world and the related information in the virtual world. For example, a typical IoT application, such as a smart city, includes smarter urban transport networks, upgraded water supply, and waste-disposal facilities, along with more efficient ways to light and heat buildings. For smart city applications and others, we require unique naming of every object and a secure, scalable, and efficient name resolution which can …

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
Multilingual diversity is increasing in the United States, with Spanish being the nation’s second most common spoken language (U.S. Census, 2016). In response, more Spanish-speaking bilingual counselors are providing bilingual counseling services. These counselors face unique experiences related to the constellation of language, culture, and professional development. Yet, supervisors are working with these counselors and little is known about their experiences or specific supervision strategies. This article presents the results of interviews with supervisors (N=8) of Spanish-speaking bilingual counselors regarding their supervision strategies. Implications for supervisors are provided.

Creating A New Normal: Language Education For All, Aleidine J. Moeller, Martha G. Abbott
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
Challenge: Language educators play a significant role as agents of change both within our classrooms and beyond. How can we position languages and help policy-makers and administrators at the local, state, and national levels to value multilingualism and multiculturalism as an integral and essential part of every learner’s education? What will that “new normal” look like?
Abstract: How close are we to the reality of all students having the opportunity to learn another language and gaining support for these efforts from the general public? The answer has a long history, which we point out by referencing articles that span the …

Utah State University’S Cache Valley Latinx Voices Project: Social Justice In The Archives, Randy Williams, Eduardo Ortiz, Maria Luisa Spicer-Escalante
Journal of Western Archives
Northern Utah Speaks is an in-depth ethnographic effort by Utah State University Libraries’ Special Collections and Archives (SCA) to bring diverse voices of Northern Utah communities into the Archives. Since 2006, the focus is with social justice in mind as SCA endeavors to bring the voices of underrepresented and historically excluded people into the Archives. Calls to make archival records more inclusive stretch back fifty years, however for many archival institutions this work has moved forward in fits and starts, if at all, and most often without the input and assistance from the community to be studied, collected, and included. …

Discourses Of Bilingualism: Facebooking In The Margins -- Generating Sexist, Classist, And Racist Backlash, Mary Francis Agnello
Discourses Of Bilingualism: Facebooking In The Margins -- Generating Sexist, Classist, And Racist Backlash, Mary Francis Agnello
International Critical Media Literacy Conference (2016-2019)
This session will focus on sexist, classist and racist Facebook discussions about bilinguals and bilingualism. Feminist and critical discourse analyses inform analytic lenses for identifying and making sense of peoples’ attitudes, ideological penchants and the possibilities for having an informed dialog regarding concepts about dialog participants. Two research questions guide the study: How can unlike-minded people come to some agreement or consensus about a highly controversial issue like bilingualism in the United States? To what degree is attempting to converse with people from different political persuasions a worthwhile endeavor in light of polarized tensions in the United States?

Perspectives Of Augmentative-Alternative Communication Users Regarding Their Experiences And Perceived Barriers To Engagement In Higher Education, Heather Anderson
Doctoral Dissertations
This research investigated the higher education experience of students who communicate via augmentative-alternative communication (AAC) due to having severe speech impairments. Research questions addressed how the students interact with others in the higher education setting, and the presence and nature of any barriers to full participation in academic and nonacademic activities. Using a qualitative case study design, data obtained from personal interviews and questionnaires were analyzed and interpreted based on the theoretical perspectives of critical disability theory and Astin’s model of student involvement. Key themes included issues with communication; challenges associated with disability; and policy and practice, specifically the role …

A Historical Approach To Understanding Explanatory Proofs Based On Mathematical Practices, Erika Oshiro
A Historical Approach To Understanding Explanatory Proofs Based On Mathematical Practices, Erika Oshiro
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
My dissertation focuses on mathematical explanation found in proofs looked at from a historical point of view, while stressing the importance of mathematical practices. Current philosophical theories on explanatory proofs emphasize the structure and content of proofs without any regard to external factors that influence a proof’s explanatory power. As a result, the major philosophical views have been shown to be inadequate in capturing general aspects of explanation. I argue that, in addition to form and content, a proof’s explanatory power depends on its targeted audience. History is useful here, because from it, we are able to follow the transition …

“You Know, For A Clownfish, He Really Isn’T That Funny”: Implications Of Grief And Masculinity Through A Narrative Analysis Of Finding Nemo, Kendyl A. Barney
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Cultural norms make up a dominant narrative of bereavement which assumes individuals detach from the deceased and eventually “get over” their grief, among other expectations. This narrative has yet to evolve despite recent theories that suggest grief is a lifelong experience that involves continuing bonds with the deceased (Dennis & Kunkel, 2012) and ongoing processes of meaning making (Neimeyer, Klass, & Dennis, 2014). The dominant narrative is perpetuated largely through prominent rhetoric, such as film and media. Further, the dominant narrative is gendered by appropriating expected ways of grieving to women and men. For example, emotional expressions of grief (e.g., …
Structural And Contextual Frameworks: Distinguishing Literal From Metaphorical Depictions Of Exaggerated Size, Christopher A. Crawford, Igor Juricevic
Structural And Contextual Frameworks: Distinguishing Literal From Metaphorical Depictions Of Exaggerated Size, Christopher A. Crawford, Igor Juricevic
Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences
In 2016, the authors proposed the Contextual Framework and Structural Framework for understanding pictorial metaphors. These two dichotomous frameworks are especially useful for assessing the apprehension by viewers of pictorial devices that can be used either literally or metaphorically. One such pictorial device is exaggerated size—that is, depicting objects as being overly large. This pictorial device can be used metaphorically (e.g., to indicate importance) or literally (e.g., to depict a giant). We analyze three comic book covers from the Silver Age of American comic books using both frameworks to illustrate how observers distinguish metaphoric pictorial devices from literal ones.

‘You Guys Are Bilingual Aren’T You?’ Latinx Educational Leadership Pathways In The New Latinx Diaspora, Katherine Rodela, Claudia Rodriguez-Mojica, Alison Cochrun
Teacher Education
Existing research suggests that Latinx educational leaders in the U.S. positively impact Latinx student outcomes and home–school relationships. Yet, much of this research has been conducted in traditional U.S. Latinx immigrant destinations. We know little about the Latinx leadership experiences in regions where Latinx communities are smaller, yet growing quickly such as the New Latinx Diaspora. Using Latina/o Critical Race Theory, this study analyzed in-depth interviews with five Latinx administrators in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. Participants’ counter-stories revealed three key findings: their bilingualism was an asset and liability in their early careers, they demonstrated deep persistence in the face of …
