Raspbot - Raspberry Pi-Powered Robot Controlled By A Webapp, Julio Lopez, Eric Michel, Jhon Loiaza, Nancy Aguilera, Vilmarys Salgado
ICT
This project aims at designing a robot prototype made from Lego, which contains a Raspberry Pi device, that will be remotely controlled through a web application to allow the robot to perform certain movements which would be sent from the client’s interaction. The process began by researching several different technologies that we used as our starting point for designing both prototypes (hardware and software). Concurrently, we focused investigation on the IoT and were inspired to make a robot prototype that would implement the basic concepts and, at the same time, merge it with the previously learnt knowledge acquired during our …

America’s educational system has historically provided the best advantages for learners to use their potential to reach their learning, social, and professional goals. In contrast, it has also marginalized and oppressed the rights and opportunities of culturally diverse groups, i.e. African-Americans and Latinos, through the misrepresentation of, or the complete omission of, various ethnic groups and cultures in traditional instruction. This marginalization and oppression has contributed to the achievement gap between the dominant, white, middle-class and racial and socioeconomic minorities. This gap is accentuated by the cultural dissonance between teachers and their diverse student body population. Teachers must be equipped …

Supervised Machine Learning Models For Fake News Detection, Andrea Lopez, Adelo Vieira, Zafar Ahsan, Farooq Sabib, Shirley Marinho
ICT
Fake news or the distribution of disinformation has become one of the most challenging issues in society. News and information are churned out across online websites and platforms in real-time, with little or no way for the viewing public to determine what is real or manufactured. But an awareness of what we are consuming online is becoming apparent and efforts are underway to explore how we separate fake content from genuine and truthful information. The most challenging part of fake news is determining how to spot it. In technology, there are ways to help us do this. Supervised machine learning …

Working Paper No. 34, Rosa Luxemburg And Joan Robinson On The Accumulation Of Capital, Brian Vistica
Working Papers in Economics
This inquiry seeks to establish that both Rosa Luxemburg and Joan Robinson advanced ideas on the accumulation of capital. Related to their social status in their respective eras, each proposed their distinct ideas on the expansion of production and the accumulation of capital. Both scholars bring into consideration the alarming ways that a seemingly ceaseless expansion in turn calls for an expansion of a marketplace for generating sufficient levels of demand for output. These two authors offer historical examples drawn from around the globe, ranging from the commodification of land on the Indian subcontinent to the Opium Wars in China, …

This research is devoted to study the performance of Iraqi EFL learners with reference to idiomatic expressions in modern Standard English.By definition , an idiom is a linguistic unit in which the meaning of a given construction cannot be understood from the words that compose it. Evidence shows that English idiomatic expressions represent a rather problematic area for EFL learners . Thus , this study aims at theoretically investigating the English idiomatic expressions and practically studying the Iraqi EFL learners' performance in dealing with these expressions by means of a specialized test designed for this purpose . It is hypothesized …

The present research is a stylistic attempt to study the unified sides of stream of consciousness and interior monologue in selected extracts from Faulkner's and Ginsberg’s: Absalom, Absalom! and “Howl”. Its relevance is to the sophisticated techniques that help unify the two sides in the works. These techniques are linguistic techniques, narrative techniques and metaleptic ones. The purpose of this study is to analyze them in Faulkner's and Ginsberg’s Absalom, Absalom and “Howl”. The problematic case of the two aforementioned works lies in the reader’s involvement in resolving their ambiguity. Their rigorous style drives the reader into an …

Phonaesthemes are a set of sound-inspired meanings in a language. They represent words, nouns, adjectives, or verbs whose general meaning is related. The present paper sheds light on this area by investigating phonaesthemes in Standard Arabic through a broader consideration of all the possible syllables and sound sequences which are expressive of phonaesthemes. There exist in Standard Arabic certain sound syllables, mainly initial ones, that manifest a noticeable similarity in meaning and this paper attempts at investigating this area. Firstly, phonaesthemes are introduced as to definition, history, and cross-linguistic familiarity. Then, phonaesthemes in Standard Arabic are listed along with a …

Foundational Linguistic Literature In Cultural Anthropology, ياس خضر عباس العباسي
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
Although all human groups have a language in the narrow sense, it is possible to visualize and confirm the ability of human beings to learn each language from thousands of languages via understanding it from speakers of other languages. Anthropologist shares the perception and understanding with linguists in the idea that human language is sufficiently distinct, complex and extensive to require academic study per se, but this does not mean that anthropologists and linguists agree on what constitutes the nature of the language and how it should be studied, but for anthropology it occupies a wide range of human's …

So many readers are avid in the demarcation of neologistic (hereinafter neos) abbreviations, acronyms and initialism. Sometimes one might be baffled with the influx of these formations due to their inconsistency or multiplefaced constructions. To debaffle such rather enigmatic rebus a linguistic explanation and analysis of acronymized syllabification is conducted hoping to show how they work. The way in which we envision the lullabies codified might be moxic rather than handy in accessing the effigies fresco and surplus communicative value of each. Being linguistically fluctuated we opt for general viewing for the acronymized structured by texters who, it happened, are …

Traditionally, most approaches to stylistic analysis are not related to cognitive processes by which readers are engaged and conceptualized to a particular point of view while reading a text. Against this account , emerged through 1980s and 1990s, various stylistic models for identifying categories of point of view in fiction, and this brings a cognitive perspective in analysis of narrative stylistics. Deictic shift theory is an act to demonstrate how readers are completely engaged in narratives, to a degree that they interpret events in narrative as if they were experiencing them from a position within the story world. According to …

Key Expressions Of Posttraumatic Distress In Cambodian Children: A Step Toward Culturally-Sensitive Trauma Assessment And Intervention, Caleb J. Figge
Key Expressions Of Posttraumatic Distress In Cambodian Children: A Step Toward Culturally-Sensitive Trauma Assessment And Intervention, Caleb J. Figge
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
More than half of all children in Cambodia experience direct abuse and over 70% other traumatic events, which significantly increase risk for a range of physical and mental health problems. Additionally, Cambodian children face longstanding sociopolitical, intergenerational, and cultural factors that compound the impact of direct victimization. As a result, rates of posttraumatic stress symptoms among Cambodian youth are high. However, care providers often rely on Western-based nosology that does not account for culturally specific expressions of trauma. Lack of knowledge surrounding the expressions of distress that best represent the experience of traumatized Cambodian children hinders diagnostic accuracy and treatment …

Chasing The White Whale: Capturing The Relation Between Parent Educational Involvement And Student Socioemotional Difficulties Over Time, Samantha Irene Reaves
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Early childhood socioemotional difficulties are of increasing concern due to their impact on later functioning, particularly in the academic environment. A large body of research highlights the relation between parent educational involvement and student academic success, such that more involvement is associated with better grades, retention, and graduation. It is praised as a protective factor for those students at risk for poor outcomes. An under-researched area of the parent educational involvement literature is the construct’s relation to student socioemotional functioning, which also affects success in the academic environment and predicts long term functioning. This study seeks to longitudinally investigate these …
Teachers' Perceptions Of English Learners: A Multidimensional Scaling Approach, Cyndy Alvarez
Teachers' Perceptions Of English Learners: A Multidimensional Scaling Approach, Cyndy Alvarez
Theses and Dissertations
With an influx in immigration across the United States our educational policies have needed to change to meet the instructional needs of our students, especially our English Learners (Koyama, 2004; Mantero & McVicker, 2006). Historically, these educational language policies were an outcome of court cases that highlighted discrimination and racist practices against our English Learners. These cases, such as the Chicano civil rights movements or East L.A. “walkouts” in 1968, Lau v. Nichols (1974), Serna v. Portales Municipal Schools (1974), Rios v. Read (1978), and U.S. v. Texas (1981), Plyver v. Doe (1982), Castaneda v. Pickard (1981), have resulted in …

Influence Of Language Ideologies And Positioning On Emergent Bilinguals Linguistic Identity, Sarah Christine Urbanc
Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, the researcher employed critical sociocultural and positioning theories to examine how classroom teachers, ESL teachers, and family members discursively positioned emergent bilinguals in the general education, ESL, home, and community settings, as well as investigated the influence of positioning on the emergent bilinguals’ linguistic identity. This study also explored the various ideologies that students, teachers, and parents articulated and embodied while negotiating issues of identity, power, agency, and the social construct of smartness within the figured world of school, in addition to the home and community environments. Data were generated during a six-month qualitative study of emergent …
Nato’S Selective Sea Blindness—Assessing The Alliance’S New Navies, Thomas-Durell Young
Nato’S Selective Sea Blindness—Assessing The Alliance’S New Navies, Thomas-Durell Young
Naval War College Review
The navies of NATO countries fall into two categories: old and new. The new navies lack modernization and readiness, making them deficient in their contributions to NATO security priorities. Sea blindness is a problem across the spectrum of NATO governments and illuminating this problem is now more important than ever in light of an increasingly aggressive Russia.

The Interaction Of Domain-Initial Effects With Lexical Stress: Acoustic Data From English, Spanish, And Portuguese, Ricardo F. Napoleão De Souza
The Interaction Of Domain-Initial Effects With Lexical Stress: Acoustic Data From English, Spanish, And Portuguese, Ricardo F. Napoleão De Souza
Linguistics ETDs
The phonetic implementation of domain-initial boundaries has gained considerable attention in the literature. However, most studies of the phenomenon have investigated small samples of articulatory data in which target syllables were lexically prominent and/or phrasally accented, introducing important potential confounds. This dissertation tackles these issues by examining how domain-initial effects operate on the acoustic properties of fully unstressed word-initial CV syllables in phrasally unaccented words. Similar materials were designed for a reading task in which 14 speakers of English, Spanish and Portuguese, languages that differ in how lexical prominence affects segmental makeup, took part. Results from the acoustic analyses show …

Rethinking Services With Communities Of Color: Why Culturally Specific Organizations Are The Preferred Service Delivery Model, Ann Curry-Stevens, Gerald Deloney, Matt Morton
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Racial disparities in social, education and health services continue unabated despite efforts to address them. At the margins of the service delivery system are lesser-known and minimally researched programs known as “culturally specific organizations” that have been developed by and with communities of color. These are organizations that have been developed by a specific community of color and continue to serve that same community of color. This article shares the insights of three leaders in racial equity, who have been immersed in Portland-based organizations for many years: two as organizational leaders and one as an academic research partner. The paper …

Our federal government allows states to pass and ratify new laws every year. This paper examines federal and state level policies in the context of English Language Learners’ (EL) educational opportunities. In particular, I focus on Mt. Diablo High School, which is located in the Mount Diablo District. According to the California State Department of Education, the …
