D’Imaginaire En Imaginaire, James Archibald
D’Imaginaire En Imaginaire, James Archibald
Al-Kīmiyā
The American novelist Sinclair Lewis published It Can't Happen Here in 1935; this work of political fiction was then translated into French by Raymond Queneau and appeared two years later under the title Impossible ici. The source text reveals an imagined American here whereas the imagined xenophobic and racist world translated as ici served as a reminder of the reality of pre-war Europe. Readers of target-oriented translations benefit from translators' life experiences. Those same readers, who are often fond of foreignized translations, can also regret the intentional dissimulation of the source language-culture, because they love alterity as well. In …

Effective Teaching, Effective Learning, Tacla Feghali Abi Samra
Al-Kīmiyā
This article examines how effective teaching leads to effective learning, especially in foreign language teaching and particularly in teaching English. Effective language teaching does not only depend on language proficiency but also on other specific characteristics of effective teachers whether native or non-native. Firstly, the article tackles the personal qualities of the teachers, which include motivation, intelligence, especially offering feedback and being adaptable; and self-care by taking care of themselves and overcoming burnout. Secondly, it refers to the professional qualifications of the teachers, which encompass professional development and self-reflection, knowledge of subject-matter, classroom management skills, and student-centered teaching. It also …
إعادة الترجمة أو الثبات الممنوع, Nour Nasrani
إعادة الترجمة أو الثبات الممنوع, Nour Nasrani
Al-Kīmiyā
This article deals with retranslation, its causes and characteristics. The analysis is illustrated by an English text taken from the "Prophet" (a book by Gibran Kahlil Gibran) translated into Arabic several times. Five different translations will be studied. This book was chosen because the writer approved the first translation. Why was it retranslated then? Some of the translators, in their introduction, justified their new approach and all of them agreed that the older versions were not faithful to Gibran's spirit and had some major errors. The article further discusses the different versions in Arabic while trying to define the concept …
Nouveauté Et Productivité Lexicale : Le Cas Des « Phrasal Verbs », Emilie Riguel
Nouveauté Et Productivité Lexicale : Le Cas Des « Phrasal Verbs », Emilie Riguel
Al-Kīmiyā
Phrasal verbs are probably the most common and representative constructions of all the multi-word expressions in English. Indeed, suffice it to see the large number of existing phrasal verbs, not to mention that new ones are constantly coined, which shows they are a very productive and perpetually evolving class. This article aims to draw up a brief typology of neological phrasal verbs and to provide examples of the most relevant contemporary phrasal verbs in terms of lexical innovation.

May Hobeika Haddad, Rawan Ghaly
Al-Kīmiyā
As the translation process is a mental one, subject to cognitive processes, the article aims to study the effect of the attention as a cognitive factor in the translation process. After defining the concept of attention and its forms, the study proposes, in the first stage, a design that would explain how the translator manages his attention resources. The article presents in a second stage, an empirical study which aimed to explore the effect of distraction in the translated output and thus in making mistakes. The study adopted a mixed research methodology, quantitative and qualitative. The results showed an increase …

لا يخفى على أحد أنّ الترجمة الفوريّة حقلٌ تكتنفه الكثير من الصعوبات على المستوى العملي. أمّا تعليم الترجمة الفوريّة فليس أقلّ صعوبة. وإذا كان هذا الميدان قد أصبح تخصّصًا مستقلًّا منذ عقود، فإنّه لا يزال يفتقر إلى الموازنة بين الجانب النظري والجانب العملي في التعليم

An Examination Of The Roles Of Classroom Quality And Approaches To Learning On The Early Academic Skills Of Latino Dual Language Learners Enrolled In Head Start, Marcela A. Galicia
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examined the relationship between classroom quality, approaches-to-learning, and early academic skills among 384 Latino dual language learners (DLLs) enrolled in Florida Head Start programs. The children were living in low-income homes where Spanish was the primary language spoken by at least one parent. The study analyzed the extent to which approaches-to-learning behaviors moderate early literacy and numeracy skills in Head Start classrooms of varying quality. During the spring of their prek-4 year, the children were administered the English and Spanish Letter-Word Identification and Applied Problems subtests of the WJ-III (Woodcock, McGrew, & Mather, 2001) and the Batería III …
Exploring Preservice Teachers’ Perspectives On Dual Language Education, Kylie Ross
Exploring Preservice Teachers’ Perspectives On Dual Language Education, Kylie Ross
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation investigates preservice teachers’ perspectives towards dual language education (DLE) through a mixed methods approach. This study investigates preservice teachers enrolled in an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) certification course concerning the following research questions: 1. What impact does taking an ESOL course have on preservice teachers’ attitudes and perspectives towards DLE? 2. Is there a significant difference in change in attitude between students taking the course online versus face to face (F2F)? 3. How are preservice teachers informed about what schools have dual language programs in their area? 4.What relationship may exist between attitudes, perspectives, and …
Morphological Parsing And Segmentation, Kyle Roth, Deryle Lonsdale
Morphological Parsing And Segmentation, Kyle Roth, Deryle Lonsdale
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Morphological parsing is a task where a computer recognizes the meaning that parts of a word contribute to its overall meaning and role in the sentence. Morphological segmentation simply means splitting words up into their component parts, and is simpler than parsing.
The result of my research is two-fold: I applied a VoCRF to morphologically parse a new Basque corpus, and demonstrated the e ectiveness of a paradigm-based approach to morphological segmentation. Initially, I set out to improve upon the VoCRF algorithm to account for previously-known information; unfortunately, the expected improvements to the VoCRF algorithm could not be made because …
Analyzing A Corpus Of President Trump’S Public Statements To Reveal Possible Media Bias, Kevin Zalewski, William Eggington
Analyzing A Corpus Of President Trump’S Public Statements To Reveal Possible Media Bias, Kevin Zalewski, William Eggington
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In recent years, America has become extremely politically divided. As political polarization has increased, so has distrust of the media, especially during President Trump’s current term of office. The Media Insights Project reports that “just 17 percent of Americans give the news media high marks for being ‘very accurate.’” In this partisan political landscape, it can be difficult to know where to turn for unbiased, unspun news coverage. Where can a person learn what the president has said on a given topic without some type of filter coloring the information? This possible bias is a problem that corpus linguistics can …

A Regional Party In Yorkshire?: The Proof Is In The Pudding, Elizabeth Whatcott, Dr. Joel Selway
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Within the United Kingdom, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have all gained regional assemblies which manage local affairs including health care, economic growth, education, and other services. However, the Parliament in Westminster has devolved few responsibilities to local authorities in England. Under the Blair premiership, the government began a process of referendums that would introduce regional assemblies into the Northern regions, but after the North East referendum rejected the proposal in 2004, the devolution process sputtered to a halt. However, regionalism may be gaining new life in England. The Yorkshire Party, a regionalist party that explicitly seeks a regional assembly …
Acoustic Phonetic Analysis Of Tol, Micah Wood, Dr. Chris Rogers
Acoustic Phonetic Analysis Of Tol, Micah Wood, Dr. Chris Rogers
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Tol is one of the languages belonging to the language family referred to as Jicaquean in the linguistic literature. It has roughly 200 speakers remaining in a single community in northern Honduras, called Montaña de la Flor. Some relatively recent grammatical descriptions of the language provide useful but incomplete information on the grammatical principles of Tol (Holt, 1999; Dennis, 1992; Dennis & Dennis, 1983), and they contradict each other. The need for a correct understanding of Tol is increased by the fact that Tol is an endangered language. Additionally, it is currently a language isolate and is not similar to …

Fmri And Qeeg Imaging Of Auditory Function And Source Localization, David L. Mcpherson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The purpose of the MEG was to mentor students into an active research environment where new neuroimaging techniques were being developed and utilized to describe the auditory system. Approximately 18 undergraduate and graduate students participated in the project. In addition, approximately an additional 38 students were trained, by students from this MEG proposal, in this technique from Physiology and Developmental Biology and Psychology. Results helped define the role of the right hemisphere in language plasticity. Likewise, further protocol development and adjustments to the current protocol have been implemented.

“Now As A Teacher”: Novice Teachers Reflect On English Language Teacher Education In Iran, Leila Tajik, Seyyed-Abdolhamid Mirhosseini, Ameneh Ramezani
The Qualitative Report
This study relied on the reflections of 12 novice English language teachers and 3 supervisors to explore the status quo of teacher training in 3 private language institutes with headquarters in Tehran and about 420 language schools throughout the country. Extensive data collection was done through semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and teacher diaries as well as informal peer interviews and observation of occasional meetings of supervisors and teachers. To analyze data, an inductive analysis procedure was used. Findings revealed that current language teacher training courses in the context of concern may require different types of improvements with regard to …
Correlate Not Optional: Pp Sprouting And Parallelism In “Much Less” Ellipsis, Katy Carlson, Jesse A. Harris
Correlate Not Optional: Pp Sprouting And Parallelism In “Much Less” Ellipsis, Katy Carlson, Jesse A. Harris
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
Clauses that are parallel in form and meaning show processing advantages in ellipsis and coordination structures (Frazier et al. 1984; Kehler 2000; Carlson 2002). However, the constructions that have been used to show a parallelism advantage do not always require a strong semantic relationship between clauses. We present two eye tracking while reading studies on focus-sensitive coordination structures, an understudied form of ellipsis which requires the generation of a contextually salient semantic relation or scale between conjuncts. However, when the remnant of ellipsis lacks an overt correlate in the matrix clause and must be “sprouted” in the ellipsis site, the …

A Meta-Analytic Examination Of The Continued Influence Of Misinformation In The Face Of Correction: How Powerful Is It, Why Does It Happen, And How To Stop It?, Nathan Walter, Riva Tukachinsky
Communication Faculty Articles and Research
A meta-analysis was conducted to examine the extent of continued influence of misinformation in the face of correction and the theoretical explanations of this phenomenon. Aggregation of results from 32 studies (N = 6,527) revealed that, on average, correction does not entirely eliminate the effect of misinformation (r = –.05, p = .045). Corrective messages were found to be more successful when they are coherent, consistent with the audience’s worldview, and delivered by the source of the misinformation itself. Corrections are less effective if the misinformation was attributed to a credible source, the misinformation has been repeated multiple …
The Application Of Nonverbal Prosody In Scratches, An Original Composition For Trumpet And Chamber Ensemble, Shane Courville
The Application Of Nonverbal Prosody In Scratches, An Original Composition For Trumpet And Chamber Ensemble, Shane Courville
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This project uses research in prosody (the patterns of stress and intonation in language) to inform the compositional process of an original piece of music for trumpet, piano, string quartet, and sign language entitled Scratches. In this this paper, I propose that both verbal and nonverbal prosody affects music across all cultures at both the subtle and overt levels consciousness. It shows up in chanting and rhythmic structures of folk music as well as composers who use the influence of language explicitly. In conjunction with this document, I will discuss and perform the piece I compose through the inspiration of …
The Effects Of Institutional Support Of Endangered Languages On Language Ideologies, Christy Box
The Effects Of Institutional Support Of Endangered Languages On Language Ideologies, Christy Box
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
Endangered languages are those that are spoken by a very small percentage of the population and are at risk of disappearing with all the knowledge and diversity they contain. Endangered languages often become endangered because the speakers and the society perceive the language as low status or of little use, and a positive change in perception of the language could aid in revitalizing the language. Institutions such as governments, businesses, and universities have recently begun supporting endangered languages in several areas, and this support could greatly affect language ideologies, perceptions of and attitudes about the language. In this research project, …

Developing Language And (Pre)Literacyskills In Deaf Preschoolers Through Shared Reading Activities With Bimodal-Bilingual Ebooks, Gene Mirus, Donna Jo Napoli
Journal of Multilingual Education Research
Encouraging relaxed and playful interaction over stories naturally fosters language interaction and both preliteracy [hereafter (pre)literacy skills] and literacy without anxiety. Reading for pleasure is valuable for young hearing children – we know that, it is among the most beloved family rituals. In this article we argue that reading for pleasure needs to be recognized as valuable for young deaf children and needs to become a beloved family ritual for them, as well. One way to achieve this is to read ebooks to deaf children in order to advance their communication and other (pre)literacy skills. An exploration of these types …

Teachers’ Critical Reflections On Using The Nysed Bilingual Common Core Progressions And Implications And Their Use For The Quality Of Multilingual Learners’ Instruction, Patricia Velasco
Journal of Multilingual Education Research
In this article I discuss findings of a qualitative study that explores the insights of a group of teachers about implementation of the New York State Education Department (NYSED) Bilingual Common Core Progressions (BCCP). Moreover, I explain teachers' suggestions on best pedagogical practices that could be used in the instruction of multilingual learners when implementing the Next Generation English Language Arts (ELA) Standards. The findings may guide any future revision and implementation of BCCP.
Impact Of Lexical Bundles On Chinese L2 Learners’ Oral Proficiency, Corey Ketring, Rachel Yu Liu
Impact Of Lexical Bundles On Chinese L2 Learners’ Oral Proficiency, Corey Ketring, Rachel Yu Liu
Journal of Undergraduate Research
This study examined the efficacy of formulaic language in improving the fluency of Chinese in second-language learners. Formulaic language refers to a group of words that is cognitively stored as one linguistic unit, rather than being analyzed by each indepdent part (Simon, 1974). For instance, if one were to witnessing something shocking exclaim, “oh my goodness!”, you are exhibiting formulaic language. Because we do not use typical rules of grammar to analyze formulaic language, it is likely that we can process it much more quickly (Wray, 2002). Wray et al also suggests that it is an important part of developing …

Grading Patent Remedies: Dependent Claims And Relative Infringement, Daniel Harris Brean
Grading Patent Remedies: Dependent Claims And Relative Infringement, Daniel Harris Brean
Brooklyn Law Review
Patents define an inventor’s exclusive rights by reciting essential aspects of the invention in sentences called claims. The claims are drafted in varying degrees of technical specificity, such that each claim is legally distinct—some may be valid or infringed while others are not. Most commonly, this variation is accomplished by using a combination of “independent” and “dependent” claims. Independent claims stand alone, while dependent claims incorporate by reference all the features recited in the independent claims but go on to add further features or details. The result is a range of potential infringing activity that triggers liability, from the broadest, …
