Migration is a standard survival strategy in the context of disasters. While prior studies have examined factors associated with return migration following disasters, an area that remains relatively underexplored is whether moving home to one’s original community results in improved health and well-being compared to other options such as deciding to move on. In the present study, our objective is to explore whether return migration, compared to other migration options, results in superior improvements to mental health. We draw upon data from a cross-sectional pilot study conducted 16 months after a series of volcanic eruptions in Merapi, Indonesia. Using ordinal …

Patterns Of Reading Errors Among Emirati Second Grade Students, Abdelaziz M. Sartawi Prof., Yaser S. Natour Prof., Wesam B. Darawsheh Dr., Salma Daiban Dr., Mona Aljanahi Instructor
International Journal for Research in Education
The impact of morphological awareness on reading proficiency has been neglected and there has been much focus on researching the impact of phonological awareness on reading skills. The aim of this study was to examine reading errors among second-grade Emeriti students by mapping a threefold paradigm (i.e., difficulty level, lexical category, and reading error patterns). The study sample included 168 Emirati second grade students (87 males and 81 females). One hundred forty four words were randomly selected from the Arabic reading curriculum. Those words were classified into lexical categories as nouns (45%), verbs (34%), adjectives and adverbs (10%), and functional …
Small-Scale Production And Meaningful Work: Toward A Community Of Gift And Craft, Stephen Michael Wolfe
Small-Scale Production And Meaningful Work: Toward A Community Of Gift And Craft, Stephen Michael Wolfe
LSU Master's Theses
Productive labor is often treated as a means for various ends—for money, leisure, play, etc. This essay argues that work, depending its scale and its relation to community, can be worth doing for its own sake—as an end in itself. Meaningful work is meaning-investing activity. In small-scale production, which involves an intimate relation with the material and an application of practical skill, the producers can invest products with higher-order meaning, imbuing upon them their personhood by which they manifest themselves in public for recognition as persons qua workers and for the judgment of others concerning the goodness of the product. …
The Occupied Strike Back: Writing Against Empire And Constructing Postmemory In Occupied Hispaniola, Elizabeth Langley
The Occupied Strike Back: Writing Against Empire And Constructing Postmemory In Occupied Hispaniola, Elizabeth Langley
Open Access Dissertations
The Occupied Strike Back: Writing against Empire and Constructing Postmemory argues that the specter and experience of occupation have inextricably influenced the island of Hispaniola. The centenaries of the US Occupations of Haiti (1915-1934) and the Dominican Republic (1916-1924), which took place in 2015 and 2016, serve as a mnemonic point of departure for this work. Using a comparative approach, this manuscript analyzes narratives in French, Spanish, English, and some Haitian Creole that contribute(d) to a project of resistance against US occupation and intervention over time—spanning the early twentieth century to the early twenty-first century. It further avers that these …
Teachers’ Experiences In Serving Late-Entering Central American Refugees With Limited Or Interrupted Formal Education, Kristin W. Kibler
Teachers’ Experiences In Serving Late-Entering Central American Refugees With Limited Or Interrupted Formal Education, Kristin W. Kibler
Open Access Dissertations
The overarching purpose of this study was to fill a gap in the academic literature not only by shedding light on the experiences and perceptions of teachers of late-entering Central American students with limited or interrupted formal education (SLIFE), all of whom teach in segregated, high-poverty, under-resourced, urban high schools, but in looking at what works in those challenging contexts. Therefore, the research questions asked what the teachers’ experiences have been in serving the focal students, what challenges the teachers have faced and how they have addressed them, how they effectively leveraged the focal students’ strengths and languaging practices in …

The Effects Of Station Teaching On Academic Achievement, Attention And Focus Of Students With Learning Disabilities In An Inclusive Classroom, Jacqueline M. Wraight
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the station model of co-teaching on the academic achievement and attention, focus and engagement of students with learning disabilities, as well as, the students' satisfaction with this model. The study utilized an ABAB single subject design to look at one of the six models developed by Friend and Cook (2004) allowing educators to combine their expertise to meet the needs of students in an inclusive setting. The results reveal the station model of co-teaching to be beneficial for students with learning disabilities in the areas of academic achievement and …
A Movement Theory Of Adjunct Control, Jeffrey Jack Green
A Movement Theory Of Adjunct Control, Jeffrey Jack Green
Faculty Publications
It has recently been argued (Landau 2017) that control in temporal and rationale adjuncts may be either syntactic ‘Obligatory Control’ (OC) or non-syntactic ‘Non-Obligatory Control’ (NOC), in contrast to previous assumptions that adjunct control is strictly OC. Here I demonstrate that this OC/NOC duality does not extend to all adjuncts. I outline claims that Landau would have to make in order to accommodate the wider distribution of OC and NOC in adjuncts, but argue that the account still struggles. I offer an alternative within the Movement Theory of Control.

Actor-Network And Translation In Engineering Laboratory: A Case Study Of Universitas Indonesia Civil Engineering Testing Laboratory, Fazar Ramdhana Sargani
Actor-Network And Translation In Engineering Laboratory: A Case Study Of Universitas Indonesia Civil Engineering Testing Laboratory, Fazar Ramdhana Sargani
Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi
Actor-Network Theory (ANT) has been implemented to study various topics in Indonesian contexts such as microcredit, coral reef, contestation within the sustainable energy project, and civil-military relations. However, ANT is seldom used to examine laboratories as working assemblages in Indonesia, despite its crucial role in producing technological knowledge. In order to fill that research gap, this article intends to illustrate ANT implementation in studying the work of a laboratory, specifically at the Materials and Structure Lab and Civil Engineering Testing Lab of Universitas Indonesia using the concept or process of translation. This study found that a laboratory consists not only …

“We Practice Lakota Way, But We Are Not An Indian Church”: The Diverse Ways Lakota Christians Articulate, Perform And Translate Ethnicity In Congregational Life, Kristin A. Fitzgerald
Anthropology ETDs
This study looks at articulations, performances and translations of ethnicity among urban Lakota Christians at St. Matthew’s and St. Isaac Jogues in Rapid City, South Dakota. Within the context of increased ethnic revitalization and recognition, Native American Christians are negotiating new models of ethnicity in typically Western arenas, often manifesting through actions and discourse that are ostensibly traditional. Yet even in this era of recognition, the public performance of cultural authenticity is not the only thing on people’s minds. Native people mark various practices, symbols, and persons as traditional or modern at different points in history or within different contexts …
Book Review: What Is A Mathematical Concept? Edited By Elizabeth De Freitas, Nathalie Sinclair, And Alf Coles, Brendan P. Larvor
Book Review: What Is A Mathematical Concept? Edited By Elizabeth De Freitas, Nathalie Sinclair, And Alf Coles, Brendan P. Larvor
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
This is a review of What is a Mathematical Concept? edited by Elizabeth de Freitas, Nathalie Sinclair, and Alf Coles (Cambridge University Press, 2017). In this collection of sixteen chapters, philosophers, educationalists, historians of mathematics, a cognitive scientist, and a mathematician consider, problematise, historicise, contextualise, and destabilise the terms ‘mathematical’ and ‘concept’. The contributors come from many disciplines, but the editors are all in mathematics education, which gives the whole volume a disciplinary centre of gravity. The editors set out to explore and reclaim the canonical question ‘what is a mathematical concept?’ from the philosophy of mathematics. This review comments …
A Graph-Based Analysis Of Anton Chekhov’S Uncle Vanya, Stanislaw Zawislak, Jerzy Kopeć
A Graph-Based Analysis Of Anton Chekhov’S Uncle Vanya, Stanislaw Zawislak, Jerzy Kopeć
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
We analyze the famous Anton Chekhov play Uncle Vanya by means of graph theory. Moreover, we make the ‘brave’ suggestion that Chekhov might have used graphs to represent the plot of the play and the relationships between characters. Our analysis also includes the analysis of a specific performance of the play held in Bielsko-Biała which differs slightly from the original script. The differences between the two versions are traced via graph-based analyses. When a first round of clique assignments did not give much insight we transformed them via a sequence of operations on consecutive graphs. The final graphs obtained this …
Medieval Narratives As Meta-Constructions Used In Creating Socio-Cultural Identity, Laurie A. Price
Medieval Narratives As Meta-Constructions Used In Creating Socio-Cultural Identity, Laurie A. Price
Linguistics ETDs
This study of the distribution and function of Historical Present (HP) in Old French, Old English, and Old Norse narratives combines the methods of cognitive linguistics and corpus-based discourse analysis with insights from work in sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology and medieval studies. I show that HP, in combination with those other features, is a strategy to establish stance, a strategy that both constructs and reinforces a cultural persona. Although previous research on HP in narratives focused on the use of HP to foreground events and contrast marked vs unmarked events in narratives, my analysis shows that HP has an additional range …

This dissertation is a qualitative content analysis of the ongoing online debate on Twitter regarding the AquAdvantage Salmon™, the first genetically engineered animal, fish, and meat product approved by the FDA for sale and consumption in the US. On Twitter, Topics can be discussed by any account user creating a public sphere and forum of discussion. In a time when the anthropogenic impacts on the environment are observable and at times detrimental, it remains in question how we will produce our food; this study problematizes whether or not genetic engineering is the solution and the future of our food, and …
Communicative And Collective Formative Program Evaluation: A Descriptive Case Study Of Experiences Of Teachers And Students In Saudi Arabia, Ahmed Khawaji
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
Saudi students who matriculate in programs of higher education in Saudi Arabia confront major language obstacles that hinder their academic output, due to the transition from high school, which employs Arabic-language instruction, to the English-medium of instruction in post-high school education. Preparatory Year Programs (PYPs) established to aid students’ transition, from Arabic to English, have not produced satisfactory results (Alseweed & Daif-Allah, 2013). Those programs have rarely been submitted to any form of formative evaluation procedures (Barnawi, 2011).
This descriptive case study embarked on evaluating formatively the English Language Teaching (ELT) in a Saudi university through bridging the perspectives or …
Creating New Metaphors For Women Engineering Students Through Qualitative Methods, Cliff Haynes
Creating New Metaphors For Women Engineering Students Through Qualitative Methods, Cliff Haynes
The Qualitative Report
The purpose of this study is to describe female students’ experiences in an engineering living-learning program using metaphorical analysis through a constructivist theoretical perspective. Extant literature uses metaphors from a negative viewpoint or a deficit model to describe the experiences of female undergraduates in engineering; however, new metaphors have not been used to describe the experience. This study aims to fill existing gaps in LLP literature using qualitative methods. Data from 13 semi-structured individual interviews (7 initial interviews and 6 follow-up interviews) serve as the primary data source. After conducting metaphorical analysis, I found five interpretive metaphors emerging: LLP as …

Synthetic, Yet Natural: Properties Of Wordnet Random Walk Corpora And The Impact Of Rare Words On Embedding Performance, Filip Klubicka, Alfredo Maldonado, Abhijit Mahalunkar, John D. Kelleher
Conference papers
Creating word embeddings that reflect semantic relationships encoded in lexical knowledge resources is an open challenge. One approach is to use a random walk over a knowledge graph to generate a pseudo-corpus and use this corpus to train embeddings. However, the effect of the shape of the knowledge graph on the generated pseudo-corpora, and on the resulting word embeddings, has not been studied. To explore this, we use English WordNet, constrained to the taxonomic (tree-like) portion of the graph, as a case study. We investigate the properties of the generated pseudo-corpora, and their impact on the resulting embeddings. We find …

Children from low-income homes are at risk for an academic achievement gap that spans the domains of language, math, and science. Latino Dual Language Learning (DLL) children are disproportionately more likely to come from low-income homes than their peers, making them more likely to face additional risks to their academic achievement. Science has recently been recognized on a national level as an area of importance for early childhood education. Science is a key content area for DLL children because it provides opportunities to learn vocabulary through hands-on activities, develop social-emotional skills, engage in critical-thinking, and problem-solving. High quality early science …
The Effects Of Cognitively Guided Instruction (Cgi) On The Use Of Representational Modeling By First And Second Grade English Language Learners (Ells) During Individualized Assessments Of Arithmetic Word Problem Solving., Edwing A. Medina
Open Access Dissertations
Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) is a professional development framework that informs participating teachers regarding research-based knowledge of elementary arithmetic-problem types and children’s developmental strategies for solving them. A classroom taught led by CGI participants includes one where heterogeneous learners (including English Language Learners, ELLs) are using and discussing representational systems and modeling tools (such as base-10 blocks, snap cubes, fingers, and verbal narratives) as part of the collaborative whole-class and small group problem solving process. This exploratory study investigated the effects of classroom instruction by CGI teachers on ELLs’ use of representational systems as they independently solved arithmetic word problems. …
Exploring Restorative Justice, Suspensions, And Expulsions With African American Males, Dorothy L. Mosby
Exploring Restorative Justice, Suspensions, And Expulsions With African American Males, Dorothy L. Mosby
Dissertations
Zero tolerance programs led to unequal consequences for African American males because the programs targeted behaviors African American students were more likely to receive discipline for, which resulted in an increase of disciplinary situations for the students. With the disproportionate suspensions and expulsions of African American male students in public schools, Illinois Senate Bill 100 addressed the discipline issues to reduce the number of long-term suspensions and expulsions. In the 2016–2017 school year, the state of Illinois implemented Senate Bill 100. The bill reconstructed the procedures on how school administrators suspended and expelled students; Restorative Justice was a technique used …
