Machine Translation For Crimean Tatar To Turkish, M. GöKırmak, F. M. Tyers, Jonathan North Washington
Machine Translation For Crimean Tatar To Turkish, M. GöKırmak, F. M. Tyers, Jonathan North Washington
Linguistics Faculty Works
In this paper a machine translation system for Crimean Tatar to Turkish is presented. To our knowledge this is the first Machine Translation system made available for public use for Crimean Tatar, and the first such system released as free and open source software. The system was built using Apertium, a free and open source machine translation system, and is currently unidirectional from Crimean Tatar to Turkish. We describe our translation system, evaluate it on parallel corpora and compare its performance with a Neural Machine Translation system, trained on the limited amount of corpora available.

Groundwater Quality Assessment Using Fuzzy-Ahp In An Giang Province Of Vietnam, Huynh Vuong Thu Minh, Ram Avtar, Pankaj Kumar, Dat Q. Tran, Tran Van Ty, Hari Charan Behera, Masaaki Kurasaki
Journal Articles
Along with rapid population growth in Vietnam, there is an increasing dependence on groundwater for various activities. An Giang province is known to be one of the agricultural intensification areas of The Vietnamese Mekong Delta (VMD). This study aimed to evaluate the spatiotemporal variation of groundwater quality for a period of ten years from 2009 to 2018 in An Giang. The weighted groundwater quality index (GWQI) was developed based on the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (Fuzzy-AHP) for assigning weighted parameters. The results show that that shallow wells in the Northeast and Southeast regions of An Giang were mostly categorized under …

Exploring The Needs Of Families Of Hospitalized Critically Ill Individuals In A Caribbean Setting, Amy Christine Burlar Schweizer
Dissertations
Critical illness can be a traumatic, stressful time for families of hospitalized critically ill patients. Understanding the characteristics and needs of families of critically ill patients can assist the health care team to provide quality care that is responsive to the unique characteristics of family members. Providing culturally congruent care can help to minimize the negative consequences of this time of crisis. The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to explore the needs of family members of hospitalized critically ill adults in a Caribbean setting. Leininger’s Theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality provided the framework for this study. …

Focus Group 1 consisted of boys who continued choir in high school and Focus Group 2 consisted of boys who discontinued choir in high school. Research included an analysis of the state of affairs of choral music in public schools, gender identity, male participation – Why students stay or leave, and what music does for the learner. The results of the focus groups revealed four main categories including priorities, social constructs, external influences, and respect for choir. The themes that …
The Efficacy Of "Chat Sheets" As A Conversation Tool For Communicative Access In Aphasia: A Single-Subject Study, Shyanne N. Heise
The Efficacy Of "Chat Sheets" As A Conversation Tool For Communicative Access In Aphasia: A Single-Subject Study, Shyanne N. Heise
Master's Theses
Adults with aphasia are frequently denied communicative access in family events, discussions, and daily decision-making. Consequently, recent studies have investigated conversational language interventions for individuals with aphasia (IWA) and their families. Aphasiologists support the use of communication partner (CP) training as an intervention method—through which, people around the IWA learn to use strategies and resources to facilitate successful, interactive communication. While CP training alone can be effective, family members of an IWA may benefit from the use of a supplemental conversation tool to bridge the gap between strategy training and implementation. The purpose of this single-subject A1-B-A2 study was to …
Developing A Diagnostic Measure Of Linguistic Competence In The English Language For Lower Secondary School Students In Sarawak / Kho Chung Wei, Chung Wei Kho
Student Works (2010-2019)
English language education in Malaysia is undergoing a reform, where students are expected to graduate secondary schools with the ability to use English in daily situations, including the workplace. However, some students enter secondary schools without even acquiring the basic functional literacy in English. The role of English language teachers especially in the lower secondary is to provide remedial instructions to narrow the language gaps of these students. A useful tool to support the work of these teachers is a user-friendly and efficient diagnostic test that can identify the students’ language gaps as accurately as possible. This study was an …
Representations Of Domestic Workers In Modern Arabic Fiction, Samaher Aldhamen
Representations Of Domestic Workers In Modern Arabic Fiction, Samaher Aldhamen
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this study, I have examined the representations of domestic workers in a number of Arabic mid-century and contemporary novels, using feminism and intersectionality as my overarching framework. I employed several scholarships of feminism such as Marxist and postcolonial feminism to examine the discourse on working-class women. The initial assumption of this study is that there is a noticeable invisibility of domestic workers in Arabic novels. If these characters manage to find their way into a text, they are typically ahistorical figures whose subjectivity is not centered.
Among the Arabic novels I have examined, I found that the tradition of …
Horses, Culture, And Trade: The Impact Of The Horse On Southeastern Native Nations, 1650-1830, Jacob Featherling
Horses, Culture, And Trade: The Impact Of The Horse On Southeastern Native Nations, 1650-1830, Jacob Featherling
Master's Theses
A small portion of the regional literature details the impact of horses on Southeastern Native nations and focuses on a few of the larger groups, particularly the Choctaw, from the mid-eighteenth to the nineteenth century. This thesis intends to increase the scope to analyze the entire Southeastern region, as well as multiple Native nations in the area. The thesis argues that Southeastern Natives slowly adopted horses into their economies and cultures over a longer period of time than previously believed, allowing them to increase their use of horses easily to meet market demands. Instead of southeastern nations rapidly adapting their …

Multimodal Transformer Networks For End-To-End Video-Grounded Dialogue Systems, Hung Le, Doyen Sahoo, Nancy F. Chen, Steven C. H. Hoi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Developing Video-Grounded Dialogue Systems (VGDS), where a dialogue is conducted based on visual and audio aspects of a given video, is significantly more challenging than traditional image or text-grounded dialogue systems because (1) feature space of videos span across multiple picture frames, making it difficult to obtain semantic information; and (2) a dialogue agent must perceive and process information from different modalities (audio, video, caption, etc.) to obtain a comprehensive understanding. Most existing work is based on RNNs and sequence-to-sequence architectures, which are not very effective for capturing complex long-term dependencies (like in videos). To overcome this, we propose Multimodal …

We show that two novel measures of text sophistication, applied to hedge fund strategy descriptions, encapsulate incremental information about funds. Consistent with the linguistics literature, hedge funds with lexically diverse strategy descriptions outperform, eschew tail risk, and encounter fewer regulatory problems. In line with the literature, hedge funds with syntactically complex strategy descriptions report more regulatory violations and trigger more severe infractions. Fund investors recognize the dichotomy and direct flows accordingly, but not enough to erode away the alphas of lexically diverse funds. Our findings suggest that text sophistication measures provide texture on the cognitive ability and trustworthiness of sophisticated …

Objectives of the Assignment:
Showcase students’ skills or interests in languages other than Standard English as part of the About Me statement in the ePortfolio. The assignment addresses many students in a typical FYS classroom at LaGuardia Community College. It encourages:
- Students with a native ability in another language to see it not as a stumbling block to learning but as a resource to develop academically and professionally
- Native English speakers to explore other world languages and cultures, and to consider using their interest professionally
- All students to consider whether they have experience with a dialect or slang, texting language …
Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing At The Local Level : A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Practices In Louisville, Kentucky., Steven P. Sizemore
Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing At The Local Level : A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Practices In Louisville, Kentucky., Steven P. Sizemore
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative research project is an immersion into the beliefs, ideas, meanings, values, and feelings of actors engaged in shaping local housing policies. The dissertation examines how discourse constitutes and shapes the knowledge of policy actors engaged in fair housing policies and practices in Louisville, Kentucky. I argue that policy discourse is the site where social problems become framed, bounded, and transformed into action. Therefore, if the objective of the Fair Housing Act’s mandate for HUD and its recipients is to operate programs in a manner that “affirmatively furthers fair housing” (AFFH), it is essential to understand the discursive acts …

Games And Roleplaying In The Classroom, Lydia C. Gwyn, Jonathon Wilson
ETSU Faculty Works
The Library Ambassador Program hires approximately 20 undergraduate students each fall and provides them with two semesters of information literacy and research skills instruction before deploying them across campus to help students with their research. As part of their training, instructors use various game-play strategies in the classroom including: a card game designed to teach players about databases and how they function, a card game intended to teach players how to evaluate sources of information, and a roleplaying activity meant to prepare ambassadors for experiences in helping students. Many emotions are involved in the action of gameplay such as competitiveness, …
The Date Of The Muratorian Fragment: An Inference To The Best Explanation, John F. Lingelbach
The Date Of The Muratorian Fragment: An Inference To The Best Explanation, John F. Lingelbach
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Three hundred years after its discovery, scholars find themselves unable to identify the more likely of the two hypotheses regarding the date of the Muratorian Fragment, whether it is a late second- to early third-century composition or a fourth-century composition. In light of the lingering problem of the Muratorian Fragment’s date and its significance, a new study has been conducted, and this dissertation features an exposition of that study’s conduct and findings. The study sought to break the impasse and identify the more likely of the two hypotheses regarding the date of the Fragment—that it is either a late second- …
The Basic Trait Of Antagonism: An Unfortunately Underappreciated Construct, Donald R. Lynam, Joshua D. Miller
The Basic Trait Of Antagonism: An Unfortunately Underappreciated Construct, Donald R. Lynam, Joshua D. Miller
Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications
Antagonism, the low pole of Agreeableness, references traits related to immorality, combativeness, grandiosity, callousness, and distrustfulness. It is a robust correlate of externalizing behaviors such as antisocial behavior, aggression, and substance use; in fact, in many cases, it is the strongest trait correlate. It represents the core of many important and impactful psychopathological constructs (e.g., psychopathy, antisocial and narcissistic personality disorders). It is also central to models of general and disordered personality, psychopathology, and interpersonal behavior. As Neuroticism is core to understanding the intense distress and suffering that comes with internalizing disorders, Antagonism is core to understanding the impairment and …
Language And Robotics: Complex Sentence Understanding, Seng-Beng Ho, Zhaoxia Wang
Language And Robotics: Complex Sentence Understanding, Seng-Beng Ho, Zhaoxia Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Existing robotic systems can take actions based on natural language commands but they tend to be only simple commands. On the other hand, in the domain of Natural Language Processing (NLP), complex sentences are processed, but this NLP domain does not make close contact with robotics. The beginning of computer processing of natural language, when traced back to a system such as Winograd’s SHRUDLU, conceived in 1973, actually aimed to address the issues of Natural Language Understanding (NLU) of relatively complex sentences by a robotic system which in turn takes actions accordingly based on the natural language input. NLU, in …

An Analysis Of The Evolving Intellectual Structure Of Health Information Systems Research In The Information Systems Discipline, Langtao Chen, Aaron Baird, Detmar W. Straub
Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works
The rapid evolution of health information systems (Health IS) research has led to many significant contributions. However, while the Health IS subset of information systems (IS) scholarship has considerably grown over the past two decades, this growth has led to questions regarding the current intellectual structure of this area of inquiry. In an effort to more fully understand how Health IS research has contributed to the IS discipline, and what this may mean for future Health IS research in the IS domain, we conduct an in-depth evaluation of Health IS research published in mainstream IS journals. We apply citation analysis, …
Incremental Processing For Improving Conversational Grounding In A Chatbot, Aprajita Shukla
Incremental Processing For Improving Conversational Grounding In A Chatbot, Aprajita Shukla
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Current Digital Personal Assistants can be quite efficient while performing routine tasks like setting up reminders and looking up information. However, they do not attempt to establish common ground–the process of establishing and building mutual understanding–and require a significant amount of initial data to learn how to understand user intent. In this thesis, an incremental processing framework is leveraged through a chatbot interface which updates its understanding state at each inputted word, asks the user to clarify input when the system is unsure and prompts user to give feedback several times during an interaction, all of which are instrumental in …
Inequality, Patronage, Ethnic Politics And Decentralization In Kenya And Botswana: An Analysis Of Factors That Increase The Likelihood Of Ethnic Conflict, Rei Gordon
Masters Theses
Scholars have recommended numerous institutional arrangements for mitigating ethnic conflict in divided societies. Electoral systems are often considered to have an impact on ethnic conflict, and scholars have recommended both proportional representation systems and majoritarian systems for their respective effects on mitigating ethnic tensions. However, in a cross-national analysis of 18 sub-Saharan democracies, I find no impact of electoral systems on ethnic conflict. Countries employing proportional representation systems and majoritarian systems are compared according to three measures of ethnic conflict, yet neither electoral system correlates with higher or lower levels of conflict. In the interest of identifying factors that do …

Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico on September 20, 2017, becoming the most devastating storm to impact the island in almost a century. Natural disasters have been shown to adversely impact children’s emotional, behavioral, and academic functioning and schools provide an ideal setting in which to implement wide-reaching interventions that can bolster resiliency and promote psychological recovery. Yet there is limited-to-non existent literature describing the actual implementation process of an evidence-based, trauma-informed intervention model within a school system after a natural disaster. This paper describes the process by which our team established a partnership with the Puerto Rico Department …
The Captivity Narratives Of Cynthia Ann Parker : Settler Colonialism, Collective Memory, And Cultural Trauma., Treva Elaine Hodges
The Captivity Narratives Of Cynthia Ann Parker : Settler Colonialism, Collective Memory, And Cultural Trauma., Treva Elaine Hodges
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores representations of the captivity narrative of Cynthia Ann Parker, an Anglo woman captured as a child by Comanche, with whom she lived in a kinship relationship until her forced return to Anglo society twenty-four years later. The project draws upon trauma theory to explain the persistent appeal of Parker’s narrative. Interpretations analyzed include the original historical account of Parker’s narrative, and appearances in the genres of opera, film, graphic novel, and historical fiction. The dissertation reveals how appearances of Parker’s narrative correspond to periods in US history in which social change threated the dominant position of Anglo …
Behavioral And Cognitive Correlates Of Intolerance Of Uncertainty In Children With And Without Anxiety Disorders., Colette Marie Gramszlo
Behavioral And Cognitive Correlates Of Intolerance Of Uncertainty In Children With And Without Anxiety Disorders., Colette Marie Gramszlo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Intolerance of Uncertainty (IU) has long been identified as a proximal risk factor for the development of anxiety disorders, and more recently has been implicated in the development of emotional disorders broadly. However, little is known about how IU and psychopathology symptoms relate, limiting the degree to which IU can be identified prior to the development of emotional disorders and targeted during the intervention of disorder symptoms. The current study reviews several areas of literature to inform a model by which IU impacts anxiety symptoms. First, uncertainty processing and the development of uncertainty processing in childhood are reviewed. Next, IU …
Aristocratic Women’S Kinship Ties In Twelfth- And Thirteenth-Century Flanders And Champagne, Sydne Reid Johnson
Aristocratic Women’S Kinship Ties In Twelfth- And Thirteenth-Century Flanders And Champagne, Sydne Reid Johnson
Masters Theses
Georges Duby pioneered the study of family and marriage in medieval France, but his models for family and marriage have since either been accepted or rejected. I take a middle approach in that some models still are applicable to describing marriage and family, while others require reevaluation. Duby argued that during this period women were treated with suspicion in their husband’s households, marriage was essential for the future of both families, and that family connections were deteriorating. In this thesis, I will explore family ties within the kinship network of the aristocracy of Flanders and Champagne in the twelfth and …

There is a need for rapid and responsive infrastructure repair and construction after natural disaster events such as hurricanes, wildfires, and tornadoes. These natural disasters often shut down basic infrastructure systems, as experienced recently in several Region 6 states as well as in other states around the country. Accelerated construction practices are often used in these situations to speed up the traditional, and often slow, project delivery process. However, after a natural disaster, several and different types of transportation infrastructure components are in need of inspection, rehabilitation or reconstruction, and transportation agencies are challenged with the task of prioritizing these …

More Than Just Dictionaries: Exploring The Incorporation And Use Of Linguistically Inclusive Materials In A Middle School Library Media Center, Dwane Enrique Valera
All Dissertations
The school library media center (SLMC) is a space in schools that can be overlooked when trying to reach students. The English language learner (ELL) population is a sector of the student population that is growing in the United States, and growing at faster rates in the state of South Carolina. With a growing population of ELL students, there are also misconceptions about the incorporation of native language materials in the academic setting. Being able to offer ELL students the opportunity to utilize their home languages can encourage the use of the SLMC. This study implemented an intervention to determine …
Performance Of Latent Dirichlet Allocation With Different Topic And Document Structures, Haotian Feng
Performance Of Latent Dirichlet Allocation With Different Topic And Document Structures, Haotian Feng
All Dissertations
Topic modeling has been used widely to extract the structures (topics) in a collection (corpus) of documents. One popular method is the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). LDA assumes a Bayesian generative model with multinomial distributions of topics and vocabularies within the topics. The LDA model result (i.e., the number and types of topics in the corpus) depends on tuning parameters. Several methods, ad hoc or heuristic, have been proposed and analyzed for selecting these parameters. But all these methods have been developed using one or more real corpora. Unfortunately, with real corpora, the true number and types of topics are …
