Language: A Bridge Or Barrier To Social Groups, Adina Corke Aug 2019

Language: A Bridge Or Barrier To Social Groups, Adina Corke

English (MA) Theses

Language acts as either a bridge or a barrier to social groups dependent upon the individual’s effective use of a social group’s language. The individual uses the language of the group in order to join the group and to be understood by the group. This suggests that language is behavioral in part and can be treated as a form of social norms which delegate who is a part of the group and who is not. By utilizing the language of the group effectively, an individual is able to join the group. This group language may be temporary, and the dynamics …

Europe Rising (Again): A Comparative Study Of The Dynamics And Types Of Modern European Nationalisms, 1989-2018, Timea Varga

Dissertations

Nationalism is nothing new to Europe. While theoretical explanations of the catalysts of post-1989 European nationalist phenomena remain contested along material and non-material lines, this dissertation posits that it is the interaction of economic insecurities, societal fears, and populism over time that have shaped the rise and types of post-1989 European nationalisms. Fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) is combined with a collective case study design to examine: 1) how forces – political, economic, societal, or other – have dominated the formation and latest surge of European nationalisms since the end of European Communism in 1989; and 2) whether different, context-dependent …

Social And Literacy Development Of School-Based Pre-Kindergarten Students, Stewart Smirthwaite

Dissertations

In order to meet the demands of college and career ready standards, students are expected to enter kindergarten knowing more than ever before. Literacy proficiency was measured by using data from the Mississippi K-3 Assessment Support System’s (MKAS2) Kindergarten Readiness Assessment (KRA). Social competence was measured using the Behavior Assessment System for Children, …

Field Theory Toward A Post Critical Theory Of Metaphor, Lori Wagner Aug 2019

Field Theory Toward A Post Critical Theory Of Metaphor, Lori Wagner

Doctor of Ministry

Metaphor studies have become vogue in postcritical culture among the scientific and socio-scientific communities, in advertising and in the political arena. In fact, advertisers and marketers for years have known the power of a resonant metaphor to change minds and hearts. Once relegated to the realms of literature and linguistics, metaphor studies today represent the cutting edge of research in nearly every discipline. However, the church and the Biblical Studies academy have essentially ignored this trend, still engaging predominantly in close critical analyses of texts and refusing for the most part to engage in popular culture.

This dissertation agrees with …

Searching For Sustainable, Intergenerational, And Multiracial Coalitions On The Neoliberal Campus: A Case Study, Victoria Agunod

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

This case study tracks the repercussions and re/productions effected by the alt-Right agitator Milo Yiannopolous' visit to DePaul University's campus on his “Dangerous Faggot Tour” and the consequential riot he led through campus in 2016. Looking closely at the relational positionalities and responses of the student protesters, the university administration, and the antiracist student affairs practitioners who supported the protesters, the analysis seeks to answer how the neoliberal university strategically prevents coalition-building among marginalized students, staff, and faculty, especially when the matter deals with, race, racism, and antiracism. The study unravels the structural and rhetorical strategies of neoliberalism that the …

Educating Primary Care Providers On Assessment Of Herbal Supplements Used By Latino Patients., Elizabeth Arnold Aug 2019

Educating Primary Care Providers On Assessment Of Herbal Supplements Used By Latino Patients., Elizabeth Arnold

Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers

Background: Latino population health care practices are rich in heritage and deeply rooted in ideas and traditions (CDC, 2008). Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), specifically herbal supplement use, is widely practiced among this population. Literature suggests that there is a significant gap in provider-patient communication regarding herbal supplement use (Malika et al., 2017).

Aims: The purpose of this project was to assess commonly used herbal supplements or vitamins and implement a population-specific education for providers in a primary care clinic predominantly serving Latino patients. The project aim was to increase provider assessment and documentation of herbal supplement and vitamin use …

Stay Or Go! Challenges For Hispanic Families Preceding Hurricanes: Lessons Learned, Melinda L. Lewis Phd, Paula T. Rappe Msw, Lcsw, Linda K. Tierney Msw, Janet D. Albury Msw

Journal of Family Strengths

The complexities of critical decision making processes for Hispanic/Latino immigrant families concerning whether to shelter in place or evacuate preceding hurricanes along the southern coastal region of the continental United States are explored. Hispanic/Latino immigrant families in the U.S., particularly migrant workers, may experience obstacles of language, social vulnerabilities, information dissemination, distrust of authorities, and contextual barriers. Historical perspectives and lessons learned from previous disaster preparation efforts suggest a more inclusive infrastructure at the local, community, regional, state and national levels through coordinated efforts to enhance existing meso and macro-level practice and procedures supporting health and safety of Hispanic/Latino families …
