Journal of ICSAR

This study aims to develop a digital identification instrument-based Decision Support System (DSS) for mentally disabled children. First-year research consisted of three stages, namely (a) instrument need analysis, (b) instrument prototype development, (c) instrument validation. The study involved 20 special schools taken by purposive sampling from eight districts/cities in Central Java. The method of collecting data at the needs analysis stage uses a questionnaire given to 32 respondents (teachers and principals). At the stage of prototype development, data collection is done by using a web-based DSS development technique. Furthermore, the instrument validation stage is done through professional judgment with Focus …

Sponsored Research Indirect Costs: A Single-Site Case Study Of Public Research University Stem Faculty Members’ Perspectives, Susan Gossman

The Qualitative Report

This explanatory case study investigated the phenomenon of one institution’s public research university STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) faculty members’ perspectives on indirect cost recovery from research grant funding. The explanatory scheme incorporated organizational culture, faculty socialization, and political bargaining models in the conceptual framework. The analysis indicated that faculty socialization and organizational culture were the most dominant themes; political bargaining emerged as significantly less prominent. Public research university STEM faculty are most concerned about the survival of their research programs and the discovery facilitated by their research programs; they resort to conjecture regarding the utility of indirect cost …

Parenting Resources Of Deaf Parents With Hearing Children, Barbara L. Mallory, Jerome D. Schein, Harvey W. Zingle

JADARA

Parenting resources and counseling needs of deaf parents with school-aged hearing offspring were explored as part of a larger cross-sectional descriptive study of perceptions of deaf parents' child-rearing performance. Three categories of informant provided research data. Fifteen deaf parent/hearing child dyads were interviewed. Parents also completed short questionnaires. Facilitating Responsible Behavior In Deaf Children, David A. Sorensen

JADARA

In recent years there has been an outpouring of political activity urging educational reforms. It is argued that additional monies will effect change in teenage pregnancy, reduce chronic discipline problems in schools, and lower dropout rates. Johnson, Liddel and Erting stated two reasons for academic failure in deaf education. The first is a language-related issue. A Priority Lexicon For Hearing-Impaired Children: Staff Perceptions, Mary Evelyn Moore, Lanny E. Morreau, Judith R. Johnston

JADARA

The purpose of this study was to identify the priorities assigned to lexical items by staff members who work with hearing impaired children and to characterize those selections. Seventy-three staff members rated individual vocabulary items from two lists previously developed from staff working with hearing- impaired children to create a "priority-lexicon." The resulting lexicon was then compared to developmental data from two studies of children having no impairments to determine if a lexicon based on perceived need was consistent with patterns of normal language acquisition.

Use Of Raven’S And Naglieri’S Nonverbal Matrix Texts, Jack A. Naglieri, Jane A. Welch

JADARA

This study examined the differences between the Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices scores obtained using the European (Raven, Court & Raven,1977) and U.S.(Raven,1986) nonnative samples and the Matrix Analogies Test-Expanded Form (MAT-EF) (Naglieri, 1985b). The sample of 34 hearing-impaired students (26 males and 8 females) with a mean age of 13 years 7 months (SD of 2 years, 2 months) attended a state residential school for the deaf. Raven's and Naglieri's matrices tests were administered in counterbalanced order in one session. Results indicated that the sample earned similar mean scores on the Raven's U.S. norms and Naglieri's MAT-EF, but both these …

Simultaneous Display Of User Interface Text Elements In Multiple Languages, Steffen Meschkat Oct 2019

Simultaneous Display Of User Interface Text Elements In Multiple Languages, Steffen Meschkat

Defensive Publications Series

Many operating systems and other software applications include features that enable users to customize the language used for text elements in the user interface. At runtime, the software renders the UI using text elements corresponding to the language chosen by the user or a default language. Currently, it is a requirement that a single UI language be selected and active at any given time. In certain situations, e.g., when the user is learning a new language, users can find it beneficial to have the text elements of the UI displayed in more than one language at the same time. This …

A Belmont Report For Animals?, Hope Ferdowsian, L. Syd M. Johnson, Jane Johnson, Andrew Fenton, Adam Shriver, John Gluck

Professional Science Research Ethics Collection

Human and animal research both operate within established standards. In the United States, criticism of the human research environment and recorded abuses of human research subjects served as the impetus for the establishment of the National Commission for the Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioral Research, and the resulting Belmont Report. The Belmont Report established key ethical principles to which human research should adhere: respect for autonomy, obligations to beneficence and justice, and special protections for vulnerable individuals and populations. While current guidelines appropriately aim to protect the individual interests of human participants in research, no similar, comprehensive, …

Spengler’S “Magian” Classification Applied To An Unrecognized Ecumene: The Near East, 1500 To 0 Bce, David B. Richardson

Comparative Civilizations Review

My aim in the following discussion was to determine from the historical evidence that small group of ideas, metaphysical assumptions, and attitudes which made up the core of the Magian I psychological world-outlook. The latter two-thirds of the essay is devoted to this problem, while the first third is concerned with the evidence for the very existence in the first millennium B.C. of a Near Eastern worldview of the same order as that of Greece, Europe, China, and India.

Educating For Sustainability In Remote Locations, Chris Reading, Constance Khupe, Morag Redford, Dawn Wallin, Tena Versland, Neil Taylor, Patrick Hampton

The Rural Educator

At a time when social, economic and political decisions, along with environmental events, challenge the viability of remote communities, educators need to better prepare young people in these communities to work towards sustainability. Remote locations can be defined by their inaccessibility rather than just distance from the nearest services, while the sustainability construct encapsulates a range of community needs: environmental, social, cultural and economic. This paper describes experiences that involve innovative approaches towards educating for sustainability in remote locations in six diverse countries: South Africa, Scotland, Canada, United States of America, Pacific Island Nations, and Australia. For each, the nature …

It Starts With Us: Including Refugees In Rural Schools And Communities, Alice M. Wille, Miranda K. Maher, Sibyl R. Cornell, Angelica Coumanova Kim, Brad Reimers, Robyn S. Hess

The Rural Educator

Rural school personnel across three districts and states were interviewed to learn their experiences working with refugee youth and their families. These eleven individuals held different roles including administrators, special service providers, and teachers of English language learners (ELL). Through qualitative analysis, the broad themes of communication, differences, resources, curriculum, collaboration, and family-school relationships were identified. Data were used to develop recommendations for promoting the inclusion of newcomer youth in rural schools.
