Spanish Literature In Mississippi: A Collection Analysis Of Spanish And Spanish‐Bilingual Books In Mississippi Public Libraries, Marisela Madrigal

SLIS Connecting

Mississippi, while it may be considered a rural area, contains cities along the Gulf of Mexico and other regions throughout the state that have a diverse population, which includes Hispanics. Libraries must be receptive to the communities they serve and must be aware of community demographics so that they may provide the necessary resources to accommodate them. The objective of this study is to analyze the availability of Spanish and Spanish bilingual literature.

Unmet Needs Of Unaccompanied Minors From Central America: Perceptions Of Professionals From Multiple Sectors, Sheyla P. Medina, Carol Lewis, Roberta Goldman Sep 2019

Unmet Needs Of Unaccompanied Minors From Central America: Perceptions Of Professionals From Multiple Sectors, Sheyla P. Medina, Carol Lewis, Roberta Goldman

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Background: In recent years, there has been a significant influx of Central American youth who cross the U.S.-Mexico border without a parent or legal guardian. While federal procedures are established to oversee the treatment and placement of unaccompanied minors, less is known about the needs of unaccompanied minors and available services afterthey are placed in appropriate custody.

Methods: Purposive and strategic sampling of professionals from medical, social work, education and legal fields was conducted. Fourteen informants were recruited across the U.S. for confidential semi-structured interviews, which were audio recorded and transcribed in 2016 to 2017. Standard anthropological …

Kim V. Dickinson Wright, Pllc, 135 Nev. Adv. Op. 20, 442 P.3d 1070 (Jun. 13, 2019), Elizabeth Davenport

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

The Court reversed the district court’s order granting the motion to dismiss and determined 28 U.S.C. § 1367(d), the statute of limitations for a state-law claim filed in federal court, stops running only while the claim is pending in federal court and for 30 days after the state-law claim’s dismissal. Further, Nevada’s litigation malpractice rule, which does not apply to non-adversarial or transactional representation, or before the attorney files a complaint, tolls a litigation malpractice claim’s statute of limitations until the underlying litigation is resolved and damages are certain, preserving the statute of limitations under NRS 11.207(1) which requires a …

Symposium Panel: Ensuring Access Tojustice In Maine’S Rural Communities, Kevin Stitham, Sarah Gilbert, Toby Jandreau, Adam Swanson

Maine Law Review

The dichotomy between the greater Portland area and Route One corridor, and Maine’s rural inland and Down East communities, is stark in many ways—economic, cultural, political, and spatial. These differences converge when it comes to the availability and accessibility of process and justice, and find particularly vivid expression in Maine’s well documented rural lawyer shortage. How is the rural lawyer shortage affecting Maine’s rural communities, what steps are being taken to address those problems, and what more can be done? In short, what can be done to ensure Maine’s rural communities are not denied an effective justice system?

Building Community Connections: The Second Interim Report Of The Wellcoms Mobile Van Project, Ab Currie

Canadian Forum on Civil Justice

The WellCoMs mobile legal services van is a project being carried out by the Legal Clinic of Guelph and Wellington County to increase the level of service to rural areas of the county. The project is being funded by the Law Foundation of Ontario. This report comes at the end of the fourth month of a six-month project. It shows that the project has so far been highly successful in identifying unmet legal needs of people in the rural areas of Wellington County. At the end of October when street-side community visits by the van become problematic because of inclement …

Ok, Google, Will Artificial Intelligence Replace Human Lawyering?, Amy Vorenberg, Julie A. Oseid, Melissa Love Koenig

Law Faculty Scholarship

Will Artificial Intelligence (AI) replace human lawyering? The answer is no. Despite worries that AI is getting so sophisticated that it could take over the profession, there is little cause for concern. Indeed, the surge of AI in the legal field has crystalized the real essence of effective lawyering. The lawyer’s craft goes beyond what AI can do because we listen with empathy to clients’ stories, strategize to find that story that might not be obvious, thoughtfully use our imagination and judgment to decide which story will appeal to an audience, and creatively tell those winning stories.
