Determining Differential Effects Of Interleukin-2 On Innate And Adaptive Immune Cells In Lymphoid Organs And The Gastrointestinal Tract, Ayushi Singh Jan 2019

Determining Differential Effects Of Interleukin-2 On Innate And Adaptive Immune Cells In Lymphoid Organs And The Gastrointestinal Tract, Ayushi Singh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Interleukin-2 (IL-2) is a pleiotropic cytokine demonstrated to be effective in treating cancer. However, the clinical use of IL-2 can be associated with severe side effects including gastrointestinal toxicity (GT). Similar GT symptoms are observed in inflammatory diseases such as CD (CD). Interestingly mounting evidence indicates a role for IL-2 in CD, but the underlying mechanisms are unknown. Indeed, studies on the in-vivo activities of IL-2 have mostly focused on secondary lymphoid organs and immune cells associated with them. Very few studies have addressed how IL-2 signals impact populations of immune cells in the gut. Here, we aim to identify …

Modeling Disease Impact Of Vibrio-Phage Interactions, Christopher Botelho Jan 2019

Modeling Disease Impact Of Vibrio-Phage Interactions, Christopher Botelho

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the work of John Snow, scientists and medical professionals have understood that individuals develop cholera by means of consuming contaminated water. Despite the knowledge of cholera's route of infection, many countries have experienced and still experience endemic cholera. Cholera is caused by the Vibrio cholerae (V. cholerae) bacterium and presents with acute diarrhea and vomiting. If untreated, infected individuals may die due to dehydration. Cholera is a disease that most commonly affects countries with poor infrastructure and water sanitation. Despite efforts to control cholera in such countries, the disease persists. One such example is Haiti which has been experiencing …

Mathematical Investigation Of The Spatial Spread Of An Infectious Disease In A Heterogeneous Environment, Arielle Gaudiello Jan 2019

Mathematical Investigation Of The Spatial Spread Of An Infectious Disease In A Heterogeneous Environment, Arielle Gaudiello

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Outbreaks of infectious diseases can devastate a population. Researchers thus study the spread of an infection in a habitat to learn methods of control. In mathematical epidemiology, disease transmission is often assumed to adhere to the law of mass action, yet there are numerous other incidence terms existing in the literature. With recent global outbreaks and epidemics, spatial heterogeneity has been at the forefront of these epidemiological models. We formulate and analyze a model for humans in a homogeneous population with a nonlinear incidence function and demographics of birth and death. We allow for the combination of host immunity after …

Sea Star Wasting Disease In Pisaster Ochraceus On The Washington Coast And In Puget Sound, Caitlin Wilkes

All Master's Theses

Pisaster ochraceus is a common west coast sea star whose predation of Mytilus californianus (the California mussel) increases the biodiversity of its intertidal community. Sea star wasting disease is an illness that causes sea star tissues to become necrotic until the creature wastes away and dies. In 2013, a coast wide outbreak of sea star wasting disease caused a mass mortality event in P. ochraceus. The goals of this study were to try to identify some of the possible causes for the outbreak, as well as analyze the impact that sea star wasting disease prevalence has on biodiversity. In this …

The South Korean Patent Linkage System: A Model For Reforming The United States Hatch-Waxman Act, Kimberlee Thompson Raley Jan 2019

The South Korean Patent Linkage System: A Model For Reforming The United States Hatch-Waxman Act, Kimberlee Thompson Raley

Emory International Law Review

The Hatch-Waxman Act created the modern pharmaceutical regulatory approval process in the United States. The drafters of Hatch-Waxman sought to balance incentives for branded pharmaceutical company investment in innovative therapies with incentives for accelerated market entry of generic pharmaceuticals. Today, thirty years after enactment, the Hatch-Waxman balance has shifted. Branded pharmaceutical companies routinely exploit Hatch-Waxman loopholes to block generic competitors from entering the market. After much public outcry, United States officials have prioritized closing these loopholes. This Comment proposes Hatch-Waxman reforms which follow South Korea's pharmaceutical regulatory approval process. South Korea modeled its system on Hatch-Waxman yet made it more …

Impact Of Industrial Biocides On Bacterial Isolates From Hydraulic Fracturing Produced Water, Waad Ahmed Aljohani Jan 2019

Impact Of Industrial Biocides On Bacterial Isolates From Hydraulic Fracturing Produced Water, Waad Ahmed Aljohani

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Biocides are antimicrobial compounds that are designed to kill diverse groups of microbes in an untargeted fashion. Glutaraldehyde and DBNPA are commonly used to manage microbial growth in different industries. It is possible that biocide use may result in the development of bacterial resistance. However, resistance to DBNPA is believed to be limited under normal use conditions. We isolated a number of bacteria from produced water from a hydraulically fractured site in West Texas. We then tested the ability of these isolates to resist Glutaraldehyde and DBNPA. In this study, we found that these isolates have varying resistance to these …

A Data Mining Framework For Improving Student Outcomes On Step 1 Of The United States Medical Licensing Examination, James Clark Jan 2019

A Data Mining Framework For Improving Student Outcomes On Step 1 Of The United States Medical Licensing Examination, James Clark

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Identifying the factors associated with medical students who fail Step 1 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) has been a focus of investigation for many years. Some researchers believe lower scores on the Medical Colleges Admissions Test (MCAT) are the sole factor used to identify failure. Other researchers believe lower course outcomes during the first two years of medical training are better indicators of failure. Yet, there are medical students who fail Step 1 of the USMLE who enter medical school with high MCAT scores, and conversely medical students with lower academic credentials who are expected to have …

Environmental Justice And The Possibilities For Environmental Law, Sarah Krakoff Jan 2019

Environmental Justice And The Possibilities For Environmental Law, Sarah Krakoff

Publications

Climate change and extreme inequality combine to cause disproportionate harms to poor communities throughout the world. Further, unequal resource allocation is shot through with the structures of racism and other forms of discrimination. This Essay explores these phenomena in two different places in the United States, and traces law’s role in constructing environmental and economic vulnerability. The Essay then proposes that solutions, if there are any to be had, lie in expanding our notions of what kinds of laws are relevant to achieving environmental justice, and in seeing law as a possible tactic for instigating broader social change but not …

Effects Of A Heroin Conjugate Vaccine On The Antinociceptive And Abuse-Related Effects Of Heroin In Rats And Monkeys, Kathryn L. Schwienteck Jan 2019

Effects Of A Heroin Conjugate Vaccine On The Antinociceptive And Abuse-Related Effects Of Heroin In Rats And Monkeys, Kathryn L. Schwienteck

Theses and Dissertations

The increase in heroin use is one factor contributing to the current opioid epidemic in the United States. There are three Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved medications for the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD), and these include agonist (i.e. methadone and buprenorphine) and antagonist (i.e. naltrexone) therapies. Although these medications are effective for some patients, regulatory constraints for agonist therapies limit access and patient compliance for naltrexone is poor. The development of new therapies, such as immunopharmacotherapies, for the treatment of OUD is a priority for the National Institute of Drug Abuse. A heroin immunopharmacotherapy, or vaccine, produces …

Genetic And Environmental Factors Influence Drosophila Ethanol Sedation, Rebecca E. Schmitt Jan 2019

Genetic And Environmental Factors Influence Drosophila Ethanol Sedation, Rebecca E. Schmitt

Theses and Dissertations

Alcohol use disorder is a global health issue that affects a significant portion of the population, with affects including both negative mental and physical consequences. Currently, there are few treatment options available to those who suffer from alcohol use disorder, alcohol abuse, or alcohol dependence. Identifying candidate genes or environmental influences would therefore improve the means for possible treatments or identification of those people at risk for alcohol use disorder. Previous studies in humans have demonstrated an inverse association between initial sensitivity and risk for alcohol abuse. This connection allows investigators, and our laboratory, to investigate genetic and environmental factors …

plant pathogen Aspergillus …

Bivariate Cure Rate Model Using Copula Functions In Presence Of Censored Data And Covariates, Jie Huang Jan 2019

Bivariate Cure Rate Model Using Copula Functions In Presence Of Censored Data And Covariates, Jie Huang

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Bivariate survival cure rate models extend the understanding of time-to-event data by allowing for the formulation of more accurate and informative conclusion. These conclusions are obtainable from an analysis that accounts for a cured fraction of the population and dependence between paired units. We propose a mixture cure rate model where a correlation coefficient is used for the association between bivariate cure rate fractions and a new generalized Farlie Gumbel Morgenstern (FGM) copula function is applied to model the de-

pendence structure of bivariate survival times. Covariate effects are incorporated into two components of our model, cure rate fractions and …

Design, Synthesis, And Evaluation Of Potential Burkholderia Pseudomallei Ispf Inhibitors, Sydney Marie Watkins

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This body of work focuses on the inhibition of Burkholderia pseudomallei enzyme IspF. Burkholderia pseudomallei is the causative agent of Whitmore’s disease, and IspF is an essential enzyme in the synthesis of isoprenoids, a vital class of compounds. This work has involved the design and synthesis of nearly five dozen compounds, as well as the design, modification, and use of assays to demonstrate potential interactions between the compounds being investigated and the targeted organisms or enzymes. Development of assays was made challenging by the difficulty in observing the consumption of an unstable substrate or production of a product without a …

Towards The Rational Design And Application Of Polymers For Gene Therapy: Internalization And Intracellular Fate, Landon Alexander Mott Jan 2019

Towards The Rational Design And Application Of Polymers For Gene Therapy: Internalization And Intracellular Fate, Landon Alexander Mott

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

Gene therapy is an approach for the treatment of acquired cancers, infectious disease, degenerative disease, and inherited genetic indications. Developments in the fields of immunotherapies and CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing are revitalizing the efforts to move gene therapy to the forefront of modern medicine. However, slow progress and poor clinical outcomes have plagued the field due to regulatory and safety concerns associated with the flagship delivery vector, the recombinant virus. Immunogenicity and poor transduction in certain cell types severely limits the utility of viruses as a delivery agent of nucleic acids. As a result, significant efforts are being made to develop …

Detection Of Beta-Lactamase Variants In Municipal Wastewater And Fresh Water, Sunil Pandey Jan 2019

Detection Of Beta-Lactamase Variants In Municipal Wastewater And Fresh Water, Sunil Pandey

Masters Theses

The occurrence and spread of antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) are pressing public health problems worldwide. A key factor contributing to the spread of ARGs is lateral gene transfer. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are measured hot spots of microbial diversity and resistance because they receive polluted wastewater from diverse sources and contain a variety of different environments with dense bacterial loads. Due to the overuse of antibiotics the genetic capacities of microbes have profited. This helps every source of resistance gene and every means of horizontal gene transmission to develop the multiple mechanism of resistance to each antibiotic used clinically, agriculturally, or …

The Design, Synthesis, And Evaluation Of Inhibitors Of The Ispf Enzyme In The Mep Pathway, Christopher G. Stewart

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Isoprenoids are a class of over 50,000 compounds that serve as key precursors for many compounds in plants and animals. These compounds play critical roles in many biological functions such as cellular growth, respiration, and go on to form critical compounds such as steroids and vitamins. Despite their overall necessity to life their biosynthesis only follows two synthetic pathways. These pathways are the Mevalonic Acid (MVA) Pathway and the 2-C-Methyl-D-Erythritol-4-Phosphate (MEP) Pathway also known as the non-mevalonate pathway. The MVA pathway is found primarily in humans and some higher plants while the MEP pathway is found in bacteria and some …

An Analysis Of Employee Motivation After Metamorphose, Conglomerated Public Health Care Systems, Aleta Marie Lymon

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

A global epidemic of metamorphosed, conglomerated health care systems changed the face of public health care organizations. The problem is, public health care organizations merge into new systems, but the culture for each merged organization has not been formed under the new system. Public administrators, health care workers and the Department of Health and Human Services are affected when there are issues in health care behavioral practices and performance outcomes. Research found that employee motivation is hard to achieve when there are issues within the internal structure of a new system. Using Herzberg's motivation-hygiene and Tajfel and Turner's social identity …

The Effect Of Income On Stroke Recovery In Urban Ghana, Ida Dawsome Amuah

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Stroke recovery is a crucial public health issue in Ghana due to the high rate of mortality and morbidity associated with stroke. The significant role income plays in the onset of stroke has been empirically proven using quantitative research. However, the in-depth insights on the role income plays in stroke recovery are less known and less appreciated, particularly, in middle-income countries such as Ghana. The phenomenological study was purposed to provide in-depth insight into the effect which might exist between income earned by Ghanaian-families and stroke recovery. The theoretical framework underlining this qualitative study was a combination of the Dahlgren-Whitehead …
