Who Is Screened Out? Application Costs And The Targeting Of Disability Programs, Yue Li, Manasi Deschpande Nov 2019

Who Is Screened Out? Application Costs And The Targeting Of Disability Programs, Yue Li, Manasi Deschpande

Economics Faculty Scholarship

We study the effect of application costs on the targeting of disability programs. We identify these effects using the closings of Social Security Administration field offices, which provide assistance with filing disability applications. Closings lead to a persistent 16 percent decline in the number of disability recipients in surrounding areas, with the largest effects for applicants with moderately severe conditions and low education levels. Disability applications fall by only 10 percent, implying that the closings reduce targeting efficiency based on current eligibility standards. Increased congestion at neighboring offices appears more important as a channel than higher travel or information costs.

An Efficient Algorithm For Mining Frequent Itemsets In Large Databases, B. Praveen Kumar, D. Paulraj Nov 2019

An Efficient Algorithm For Mining Frequent Itemsets In Large Databases, B. Praveen Kumar, D. Paulraj

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Flexible Bitmap Index and Cluster based Bit Vector (FBICBV), focus on identifying the eligible candidates from unfiltered huge volume of temporal data in order to find out frequent patterns among them. One of the best and efficient solutions is to use the mechanism of bitmap indexing and clustering. First, using bitmap index, the rich data are filtered out from the unfiltered raw dataset to be analyzed effectively. Thus, the eligible candidate data are identified through this process. Second, the frequent patterns are identified using cluster based bit vector appropriate for effective decision making. Hence, scanning of raw data is completely …

Journal of Tashkent Institute of Railway Engineers

This paper presents the results of experiments to analyze the efficiency of the photocell of selective radiation of a photothermogen generator at various densities. It was found that in a relatively hot climate (Uzbekistan, Ferghana), the performance of the solar cell is stable at temperatures from +25 to +35. It was found that the lowest solar cell performance (from single-crystal silicon) was about 6% and 13%, and the highest - about 15% and 16% for typical and selective lighting with triple density in a certain period of time (up to 3 and 15 minutes), respectively. The lux-ampere characteristic is given; …

Delayed Acl Rehabilitation After Autograft Tear During Surgery: A Case Report, Rolene Yousefyan Nov 2019

Delayed Acl Rehabilitation After Autograft Tear During Surgery: A Case Report, Rolene Yousefyan

Case Report Posters

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are one of the most common knee injuries in female soccer players that require reconstruction and rehabilitation. The incidence rate of autogenous ACL reconstruction (ACLR) complications during surgery are reported as low as 0.2% to 1.7%. There is insufficient information on the most effective rehabilitation protocol for patients with complications during surgery. Many rehabilitation protocols fail to include programs for patients who have general joint laxity. No known studies have reported on the most effective treatment for a patient with generalized laxity and an autograft rupture during surgery. The purpose of this case report was …

Effect Of Winter Canola Cultivar On Seed Yield, Oil, And Protein Content, Edmund T. Tetteh, Jason P. De Koff, Bharat Pokharel, Richard Link, Chris Robbins

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Canola (Brassica napus L.) is an oilseed crop that can produce healthy cooking oil and animal feed byproducts. Although it is a relatively new crop, approved for human consumption less than 40 yr ago, advances in breeding have allowed for its production as a winter crop in the southeastern United States. There is little published research, however, related to its performance and quality in this region. Therefore, a study was conducted during the 2014–2015 (Year 1) and 2015–2016 (Year 2) seasons in Tennessee. Twenty-three varieties were planted in a randomized complete block design with four replications across both years …

Implications Of Vital Sign Monitor And Electronic Medical Record Integration On Identification Of Patients In Deteriorating Condition, Brandon Buxton, Jefton Knight, Utkarsh Shrivastava Nov 2019

Implications Of Vital Sign Monitor And Electronic Medical Record Integration On Identification Of Patients In Deteriorating Condition, Brandon Buxton, Jefton Knight, Utkarsh Shrivastava

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

The manual transcription of patients’ vital signs often delays entry of critical information to Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems. This documentation delay within inpatient settings results in a lack of recent information on patient condition, decreased ability for providers to make clinical decisions, and an increased risk of data error. To alleviate these concerns, hospitals are adopting device interface systems which digitally integrate medical devices and EMRs. Prior studies have found that this type of system integration can potentially reduce the time spent on manual entry of information in the EMR and support other value-added activities in the hospital. However, …

Trans Collaborations Clinical Check-In (Tc3): Initial Validation Of A Clinical Measure For Transgender And Gender Diverse Adults Receiving Psychological Services, Natalie R. Holt, Terrence Z. Huit, Grant Shulman, Jane L. Meza, Jolene Smyth, Nathan Woodruff, Richard Mocarski, Jae Puckett, Debra A. Hope

Trans Collaborations Academic Papers

One key aspect of evidence-based psychological services is monitoring progress to inform treatment decision making, often using a brief self-report measure. However, no such measure exists to support measurement based care given the distinct needs of transgender and gender diverse people (TGD), a group facing large documented health disparities and marginalization in healthcare. The purpose of the present study was to develop and provide initial psychometric validation of a short, behavioral health progress monitoring self-report measure, the Trans Collaborations Clinical Check-in (TC3). TGD communities, providers identified as TGD-affirmative, and relevant academic experts contributed to item and scale development. The final …

Bismarck To No Effect: Fertility Decline And The Introduction Of Social Insurance In Prussia, Timothy W. Guinnane, Jochen Streb Nov 2019

Bismarck To No Effect: Fertility Decline And The Introduction Of Social Insurance In Prussia, Timothy W. Guinnane, Jochen Streb

Discussion Papers

Economists have long argued that introducing social insurance will reduce fertility. The hypothesis relies on standard models: if children are desirable in part because they provide security in case of disability or old age, then state programs that provide insurance against these events should induce couples to substitute away from children in the allocation of wealth. We test this claim using the introduction of social insurance in Germany in the 1880s and 1890s. Bismarck’s social-insurance system provided health insurance, workplace-accident insurance, and old age pensions to a majority of the working population. The German case appeals because the social insurance …

Combining Efforts: Libraries As Mental Health Safe Spaces, Sabrina Thomas, Kacy J. Lovelace

Librarian Research

In the face of seemingly insurmountable, persisting problems, what is one thing that you could do to lift that burden in your own space, in your own building, or on your own walls? This defining question led to the creation of Marshall University (MU) Libraries Mental Health Initiative. The initiative began with an art exhibition titled: “Don’t Call Me Crazy: Resiliency through Art.” The goal of this exhibition was to encourage students, faculty, and staff to create artwork informed by mental health or to help process their own mental health. With more than 30 artists and 50 pieces filling the …

Perceptions Of Early Childhood Educators Who Left The Field: A Case Study, Tosca Grimm Nov 2019

Perceptions Of Early Childhood Educators Who Left The Field: A Case Study, Tosca Grimm

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

Early childhood education (ECE) educators’ roles in promoting the positive development of children are consistently deemed essential in research. Research also presents the severe problems of burnout and turnover in the ECE field. Specific factors such as low compensation, lack of professional development opportunities, and high-stress environments are causing continued rates of burnout across the early education arena, resulting in ECE educators leaving the field. Therefore, it is important to understand the reasons ECE educators are leaving so these challenges are recognized and remedied. A qualitative descriptive case study was used to examine the issue of ECE educator turnover due …
