An Examination Of Clery Crime Statistics At Four Year Public Institutions Of Higher Education Served By Or Without Dedicated University Police Departments, Bryan Makinen
Online Theses and Dissertations
This paper was written to examine the impact of dedicated university police departments relative to reporting Clery statistics, fundamental information that prospective students and their parents can use in selecting an institution of higher education. The prospect of gaining knowledge and bettering one’s life occurs best when taking place in a safe and transparent environment. While college and university campuses are not immune to crime, similar to society as a whole, they are statistically safer places by which learning can occur.
The college years are instrumental in shaping the lives and mindset of America’s youth by exposing them to a …
Eating Disorders, Suicidality, And Interpersonal Theory Of Suicide, Emily Mink
Eating Disorders, Suicidality, And Interpersonal Theory Of Suicide, Emily Mink
Online Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to look at how eating disorders and the intrapersonal factors underlying ED are related to acquired capability for suicide and thwarted belongingness. More specifically, the present study wants to assess intra-personal factors that could have a correlation to the main components of IPTS. This study wants to assess five factors that could be associated with perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness, and acquired capability. This includes perfectionism, body dissatisfaction, anxiety, depression, and self-esteem. I hypothesize that the higher the score of intrapersonal factors the higher the higher they predict acquired capability and thwarted belongingness. Secondly, I …
Serial Killers In Popular Media: A Content Analysis Of Sensationalism And Support For Capital Punishment, April Nicole Pace
Serial Killers In Popular Media: A Content Analysis Of Sensationalism And Support For Capital Punishment, April Nicole Pace
Online Theses and Dissertations
Serial murder has been a popular media phenomenon across the United States since the 1980s, and media representations of serial killers may significantly influence public opinion as well as impact capital punishment policies. This content analysis examined the portrayal of one dozen different serial killers using 120 online media reports which included articles published between the 1970s to present day. Results of the analysis showed serial killers were often sensationalized and portrayed in biased ways by popular media, with little attention afforded to academic theories. Support for capital punishment was also prevalent. These findings have implications for policy makers seeking …
The Small-Town Nfl Player, Bodene Blare Pinz
The Small-Town Nfl Player, Bodene Blare Pinz
Online Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Several studies have predicted the odds ratio of becoming an elite or professional player based on an athlete’s hometown. The research is evident that a player from a smaller town has better odds of making it to the elite level of sport compared to a player from a large urban city. Where an athlete is raised is important in understanding how they were introduced to football and how they developed their skills. Using the United States Census Bureau and Office of Management and Budget definition and city breakdowns for this study, small-towns are defined as an area with a …
Folk Dance: An Occupation For Building Community, Wendy Price
Folk Dance: An Occupation For Building Community, Wendy Price
Online Theses and Dissertations
This pilot ethnographic study describes the behaviors and values among the members of a central Appalachian folk-dancing community. The participants were four women, three adults and one teenager, each of whom were long-standing members of the community. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and participant observation, as the principal researcher had been a member of this community for 12 years at the time of the study. Interviews were transcribed verbatim, coded, and subjected to cross-case analysis. Codes informed categories, from which emerged two overarching themes regarding values held by this community: hospitality and human connection. Hospitality encompassed practices related to …
Self And Communication In Long-Term Romantic Relationships, Farshad Michael Sadr
Self And Communication In Long-Term Romantic Relationships, Farshad Michael Sadr
Online Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to further our understanding of how individuals in heterosexual romantic relationships resolve conflict and why the identified persuasion attempts are occurring. This study proposes a two-pathway model of how socialization predicts conflict communication strategies through self-construal and relationship goals. It is hypothesized that a) gender socialization and romantic relationship power influence the dominate type of self-construal an individual holds, b) parenting goals are more strongly predicted by relational interdependent self-construal than physical self-construal and that mating goals are more strongly predicted by physical self-construal than relational interdependent self-construal, c) direct conflict communication strategies are …
Post Surgical Outcomes Following Limited-Open Carpal Tunnel Release Or Endoscopic Carpal Tunnel Release, Keeley Shaye Smith
Post Surgical Outcomes Following Limited-Open Carpal Tunnel Release Or Endoscopic Carpal Tunnel Release, Keeley Shaye Smith
Online Theses and Dissertations
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a neurological condition that may contribute to decreased grip strength, sensory function, activities of daily living, and many other negative impacts on an individual’s life. The purpose of this study was to assess whether patients who received endoscopic carpal tunnel release had better patient reported outcomes than patients who received limited-open carpal tunnel release. This study prospectively assessed patient reported outcomes such as pain, Patient-Specific Functional Score, Quick Disabilities of the Arm Shoulder and Hand Score, two-point discrimination, and hand grip-strength. This study demonstrated that there were significant differences within all subjective data measures (p≤0.017) from …
Women's Postpartum Experiences, Courtney Watkins
Women's Postpartum Experiences, Courtney Watkins
Online Theses and Dissertations
Current literature explores childbirth options and evidence-based approaches for care of an infant such as kangaroo care and breastfeeding, but there is little to no research on women’s birthing experiences and its impact on daily routines. This paper will reveal themes related to postpartum experiences and the impact on occupations for women who have given birth in the last six months. This qualitative study, using a convenience sample, explores a woman’s birthing experience and the influence it has on her postpartum occupations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2017) listed almost four million births that occurred during 2016 in …

Teacher Perspectives On Environmental Education Programs Provided By Eastern Kentucky University Division Of Natural Areas, Mahala Amber Watts
Online Theses and Dissertations
A goal of environmental education (EE) is to help instill environmental stewardship in students for the future. Hungerford and Volk (1990) believe environmental stewardship is changing behaviors, values, or beliefs related to human-environment interaction. It is important for people to learn about environmental concepts at a young age, so they will care about them in the future. Eastern Kentucky University’s (EKU) Division of Natural Areas has been conducting EE programming for students K-12 for the past 13 years. The areas utilized for EE programming include Maywoods Environmental and Educational Laboratory in Garrard County, KY or Lilley Cornett Woods Appalachian Ecological …
Iron And Fecundity Among Tsimane’ Women Of Bolivia, Elizabeth M. Miller, Maie Khalil
Iron And Fecundity Among Tsimane’ Women Of Bolivia, Elizabeth M. Miller, Maie Khalil
Anthropology Faculty Publications
Background and objectives: Iron is critical for women’s reproduction, and iron-deficiency anemia is a global health problem for mothers. While public health programs have aimed to correct iron deficiency in reproductive-aged women with supplementation, a small group of studies have shown that too much iron also has negative effects on birth outcomes. We hypothesize that women’s iron levels evolved within a narrow optimum, and predict that hemoglobin (Hb) levels would be associated with women’s fecundity.
Methodology: We used the publicly available, longitudinal Tsimane’ Amazonian Panel Study to test the association between -Hb levels and hazard of having a next birth …

The Role Of Hope Among College Students’ Academic Achievement, Esther Choe Penzar
The Role Of Hope Among College Students’ Academic Achievement, Esther Choe Penzar
Education Dissertations
First-generation college students historically face barriers to succeed academically in post-secondary education as observed through lower graduation rates, lower GPA, lower rates of persistence in college, and prolonged time to graduate compared to non-FGCS (Cataldi, Bennett, & Chen, 2018; Chen & Carroll, 2005; Ishitani, 2006). Internal factors such as hope and academic self-efficacy have shown to have a distinct and significant impact on academic achievement (Feldman & Kubota, 2015).
In the present research, the relationships between Snyder and colleagues (1991) Trait Hope Scale (THS), Chemers and colleagues’ (2011) Academic Self-Efficacy Scale (ASES) and academic achievement, as measured by self-reported GPA, …
Interorganizational Collaboration In Education For Community Change: An Exploratory Case Study, Stacy Marie Mehlberg
Interorganizational Collaboration In Education For Community Change: An Exploratory Case Study, Stacy Marie Mehlberg
Education Dissertations
In the fields of business and healthcare, researchers have found that organizations are more successful at serving their clients when they collaboratively share knowledge, resources, and time using a multidisciplinary approach. There is less empirical evidence supporting these interorganizational collaborations (IOCs) in education. In 2013, the Cold Spring School District (CSSD) established an initiative to improve student and community outcomes. To do this, the district created an IOC to guide their work. The purpose of this current study was the exploration of this IOC to better understand how the IOC was developed, supported, and sustained. Through analysis of interviews, surveys, …
Nudges And Norms In Multidistrict Litigation: A Response To Engstrom, Elizabeth Chamblee Burch
Nudges And Norms In Multidistrict Litigation: A Response To Engstrom, Elizabeth Chamblee Burch

On paper, the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure apply equally to billion-dollar opioid allegations and small-stakes claims for $75,000.01. In practice, however, judges and attorneys in high-stakes multidistrict proceedings like those over opioids have invented a smattering of procedures that you’ll never find indexed in the Federal Rules: plaintiff fact sheets, short form complaints, science days, bellwether trials, census orders, inactive dockets, and Lone Pine orders to name but a few. In a world where settlement is the prevailing currency, norms take root. But as norms blossom, the stabilizing features of the federal rules—balance, predictability, and structural protections—can wither. As …
Teaching Tomorrow’S Lawyers Through A (Semi-) Generalist, (Mostly-) Individual Client Poverty Law Clinic: Reflections On Five Years Of The Community Health Law Partnership, Jason A. Cade
Scholarly Works
Design options when starting a live-client clinic from scratch can be somewhat overwhelming. Should the clinic focus on systemic impact or individual representation? Appellate work or hearings? Should the clinic specialize or cover multiple legal issues? Another set of issues concerns how the clinic should find and accept its clients, and whether students should have a role in the intake process. The list of choices goes on. In this Essay, written for the Georgia Law Review’s Online Issue celebrating 50 years of clinics at the University of Georgia School of Law, I describe how I have navigated these and other …

Currently, there are 44.2 million Americans holding student loan debt collectively totaling $1.5 trillion. This massive debt has a profound effect, not only on the lives of the debtors, but also on the national economy because it prevents the debtors from buying homes and cars and creating new businesses. This debt is also speculated to be a likely trigger for the next housing bubble because student loans, like the subprime mortgage loans underlying the 2008 financial crisis, are securitized and sold to investors. But many of those with student loans struggle to find jobs that will enable them to pay …

Evaluation Of Silver Nanoparticle Encapsulation In Dppc-Based Liposome By Different Methods For Enhanced Cytotoxicity, Azeez O. Yusef, Alan Casey
Articles
Here we carried out a comparative study on two cost and time effective methods of encapsulating silver nanoparticles (AgNP) in dipalmitoyl-phosphatidyl choline (DPPC)/cholesterol-based liposome to enhance nanoparticle cytotoxicity, and evaluated the effect of this on a blood cell line (THP1 monocytes) often involved in uptake of nanoparticles during human exposure. DLS and Zeta potential analyses over a 6-months period showed the extruded Lipo-AgNP (Ex-Lipo-AgNP) exhibited more stable characteristics when compared with the probe-sonicated Lipo-AgNP (PB-Lipo-AgNP). SEM microscopy indicated agglomeration of the PB-Lipo-AgNP which was not observed in Ex-Lipo-AgNP. Ex-Lipo-AgNP also exhibited higher temperature-dependent stability with 35.3% reduction in size from …

An increase in the global health burden of temperature was projected for 459 locations in 28 countries worldwide under four representative concentration pathway scenarios until 2099. We determined that the amount of temperature increase for each 100 ppm increase in global CO2 concentrations is nearly constant, regardless of climate scenarios. The overall average temperature increase during 2010–2099 is largest in Canada (1.16 °C/100 ppm) and Finland (1.14 °C/100 ppm), while it is smallest in Ireland (0.62 °C/100 ppm) and Argentina (0.63 °C/100 ppm). In addition, for each 1 °C temperature increase, the amount of excess mortality is increased largely in …

Lead can cause morphological and functional changes in heart, and inflammation and endothelial dysfunction in vasculature. Endocan, as a novel indicator of endothelial dysfunction, has been used for cardiovascular diseases. This study investigated the relationship between lead exposure, endocan levels, and diastolic functions.Materials and methods: A total of 51 lead-exposed workers without a known cardiovascular disease or risk factors and 54 healthy controls were enrolled. All participants underwent transthoracic echocardiography. Blood lead and serum endocan levels were analyzed. Results: Baseline demographic and clinical characteristics were found to be similar between groups. Median blood lead (32 vs 1.5 µg/dL, P < 0.001) and serum endocan levels (67 vs 57.1 pg/mL, P = 0.02) were significantly higher in the lead-exposed group. Serum endocan level showed a positive correlation with blood lead levels (r = 0.404, P = 0.003) in lead-exposed workers. Serum endocan level was an independent risk factor for increased E/E' ratio (ß = 0.704, P = 0.002) and left atrial volume index (ß = 1.158, P = 0.011) and higher level of lead in blood was an independent risk factor for increased E wave (ß = 8.004, P = 0.022) in lead-exposed workers. Conclusion: Worsened diastolic functions may be seen in the course of lead exposure. Due to sharing a similar mechanism, a higher serum level of endocan may be a valuable laboratory clue for impaired diastolic function in this population.

Background/aim: Some of the patients suffering from cardiac arrest (CA) remain in a chronic unconscious state in intensive care units (ICUs). The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of chest compression (CC) on cerebral oxygenation during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). As a secondary goal, we attempted to determine the effects of regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO2) values on consciousness and the survival rate using the Full Outline of Unresponsiveness (FOUR) scoring method.Materials and methods: This observational preliminary study was carried out with 20 patients with CA who were hospitalized in ICUs. The rSO2 values measured by near-infrared …
