Variations In Sensitivity To Chlorine In Ecuador And Us Consumers Implications For Community Water Systems, Jacob Stout, Donald J. Tellinghuisen, David B. Wunder, Chad D. Tatko

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Successful implementation of chlorination for disinfecting community water systems in developing countries faces obstacles, with rejection of chlorinous flavor as a significant factor. Determining consumers' abilities to accurately detect chlorine in treated water is important to identifying acceptable chlorination levels that are also effective for water disinfection. Chlorine detection sensitivity was tested in untrained Ecuadorian consumers with limited prior experience with chlorinated water and US consumers with extensive prior experience with chlorinated water. Water samples with free chlorine concentrations up to 3.0 mg/L were presented for flavor testing. Ecuadorian consumers showed higher sensitivity, being able to detect chlorination at 2.0 …

Agricultural conservation programs often focus on farm operators when promoting conservation practices. However, much of U.S. farmland is owned by landowners not directly involved in farm operations. Rental arrangements on these lands can dis-incentivize the adoption of conservation practices that could improve soil health, water quality, and land values. To date, agricultural conservation policy has largely ignored the role of non-operating landowners (NOLs) and rental arrangements. We help improve the evidence-base for policy by identifying barriers to adoption of conservation practices on rented farmlands. Analysis of forty interviews with NOLs, operators, farm managers and university extension personnel in Iowa, Illinois, …

Leading Through Awareness And Healing: A Servant-Leadership Model, Jiying Song Jan 2019

Leading Through Awareness And Healing: A Servant-Leadership Model, Jiying Song

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Servant-leadership was not a leadership theory developed through empirical studies, but more a philosophy of life first articulated by Robert Greenleaf (1904-1990) (Beazley, 2003). Scholars and writers have been criticizing servantleadership as soft (Ebener, 2011; Nayab, 2011) and lacking a coherent conceptual framework (Eicher-Catt, 2005), an integrated theoretical development (van Dierendonck, 2011), and empirical support (Northouse, 2016). In response to these critiques and public interest, some scholars and writers have organized servant-leadership into a variety of elements: characteristics (Liden, Panaccio, Meuser, Hu, & Wayne, 2014; Spears, 2002), behaviors (Liden et al., 2014), pillars (Sipe & Frick, 2009), dimensions (van Dierendonck …

The Common Good And Servant-Leadership: Rocks Upon Which Good Societies, Organizations, And Leaders Are Built, Dung Q. Tran, Larry C. Spears

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The humanistic concepts undergirding the common good and servant-leadership—“the protection of human dignity and the promotion of societal well-being” (Pirson, 2017, p. 2) —are ancient, aspirational, and enduring. These theories resonate with various wisdom traditions and have been associated with and/or examined by consequential thoughtleaders such as Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, Augustine, John Rawls, Mother Teresa, and Desmond Tutu (Howell & Wanasika, 2018; Keith, 2015; Trompenaars & Voerman, 2009; Tutu, 1999; Velasquez et al., 2014). Among the many key contributors to the development of the common good and servant-leadership were Saint John XXIII and Robert Greenleaf, whose influential ideas in the …

Interview With Larry C. Spears, Ben Lichtenwalner

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Ben: Hi and welcome to ModernServantLeader.com. Today we have a real treat for you. I’m here with Larry Spears who’s really one of the Godfathers of servant-leadership, if you will. Larry has written a ton of books and knows a great deal about Greenleaf’s views on servant-leadership. In fact, he was the CEO and president of the Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership for almost two decades, and since 2008 he runs the Spears Center for Servant-Leadership. In fact, Larry, you recently received an award from the Greenleaf Centre in the United Kingdom for your contributions to servant-leadership over the years, …

Reducing The Impact Of Geographic Dispersion On The Practice Of Servant-Leadership: The Role Of Technology In Leading From Afar, Kevin J. Hurt, Daniel K. Kurber, Alexander M. Stodola

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Hermann Hesse’s (1956) novel, The Journey to the East, serves as Greenleaf’s (1970) inspiration for the concept of servant-leadership. In Hesse’s novel, he describes the adventures of the League, a secretive group of both real life and fictional characters. A small element of the League departs from Europe on an eastward pilgrimage. While the other travelers are focused on their own reasons for embarking on this trek, Leo, introduced as the group’s servant, happily embraces his role of carrying luggage, serving the travelers, performing menial tasks, and keeping the organization on track. Suddenly and without warning, Leo disappears from the …

Love And Servant-Leadership, Tom Buck Jan 2019

Love And Servant-Leadership, Tom Buck

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Parker Palmer (2000) described the world as a mixture of both shadow and light. On a grand scale, the interplay of shadow and light can be witnessed both in wars and the giving of humanitarian aid across the globe. This exchange of shadow and light can also be experienced in local communities through the existence of poverty and depression, as well as volunteerism and charitable giving. While there are examples of famous leaders who inspired large movements towards great change, these leaders are famous and notable precisely because they are the exception, rather than the rule. Most leaders will not …

Cash For Consideration? An Examination Of Academics, Demographics, And Student Socioeconomics In The Provisioning Of Institutional Aid., Matthew G. Matyasovsky

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation is an empirical investigation of student level observations of 11 cohorts of first-time full-time freshmen from a public, land-grant, research university in Appalachia. Complete with student financial aid offerings, socioeconomic status, and pre-college academic characteristics such as standardized test scores and high school GPA, I investigate the data to examine institutional behavior constrained by resource dependence. The variable of interest is institutional financial aid. Institutional financial aid awards are monetary concessions presented to students as a means to discount the overall price a student pays to enroll. As institutional aid is a direct mechanism through which the institution …

An Exploration Of The Critical Success Factors Associated With Implementing A Public Health Plan In Local Governments Within Western Australia, Anne Polley Jan 2019

An Exploration Of The Critical Success Factors Associated With Implementing A Public Health Plan In Local Governments Within Western Australia, Anne Polley

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Public Health planning in local governments in Western Australia (WA) is a relatively new approach to addressing local health needs. The Western Australian Public Health Act came into effect in 2016. The Public Health Act 2016 encompasses a range of legislative requirements, some of which include the development of Local Public Health Plans. A range of roles within the local government workforce therefore are likely to require support to plan and implement Public Health Plans, which in the past have not directly been a component of their role. There is limited understanding and evidence of the barriers and enablers that …

The Impact Of Video As A Self-Reflective Tool For Improvement Of Teacher Feedback Practices, Julia Mueller Jan 2019

The Impact Of Video As A Self-Reflective Tool For Improvement Of Teacher Feedback Practices, Julia Mueller

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Teacher reflection on instructional practices can improve performance and positively influence student achievement. This qualitative quasi-ethnographic study investigated the impact of self-tracking video technology as a reflective tool for improvement of teacher feedback in a specialist primary classroom. Video provided observational data which was analysed using a checklist and researcher and reviewer annotations. The study concluded that the teacher used non-specific feedback strategies more than specific-feedback to respond to behavioural, engagement and learning issues. Thus, context was identified as an important determinant of effectiveness in feedback. The video technology features enhanced the teacher’s reflection and strengthened the collaborative reflective processes.

Changes In The Biochemical And Nutrient Composition Of Seafood Due To Ocean Acidification And Warming, A. J. Lemasson, J. M. Hall-Spencer, V. Kuri, A. M. Knights

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Ocean acidification and warming may threaten future seafood production, safety and quality by negatively impacting the fitness of marine species. Identifying changes in nutritional quality, as well as species most at risk, is crucial if societies are to secure food production. Here, changes in the biochemical composition and nutritional properties of the commercially valuable oysters, Magallana gigas and Ostrea edulis, were evaluated following a 12-week exposure to six ocean acidification and warming scenarios that were designed to reflect the temperature (+3 °C above ambient) and atmospheric pCO 2 conditions (increase of 350–600 ppm) predicted for the mid-to end-of-century. Results suggest …

Internal And External Determinants Of Export Performance: Insights From Algeria, My Haddoud, W Nowinski, P Jones, R Newbery

Plymouth Business School

The internationalization of small and medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs) has been the focus of numerous studies. However, while the attention has thus far been on SMEs operating in developed countries, firms evolving in a developing context, including Africa, have been largely neglected. To address this, and drawing on a dual resources‐based and network‐based view, this study simultaneously investigates the importance of internal and external resources for firms’ export performance and regularity in the context of North African SMEs. Using a sample of Algerian exporters, the study reveals the superiority of discrete resources for boosting export performance and export regularity. These findings …

The Uk Government Internet Safety Strategy – Time To Listen To The Youth Voice?, Ad Phippen Jan 2019

The Uk Government Internet Safety Strategy – Time To Listen To The Youth Voice?, Ad Phippen

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

The policy space around “online safety” has been active in the last 18 months, with development from manifesto commitment through green paper to proposed white paper. The goal is developing a legislative and regulative programme that will, it is proposed, ensure that UK citizens are “safe” when they go online. With the proposed white paper anticipated in Autumn 2018, it is worthwhile to pause and reflect on the policy direction, drawing from both empirical and personal perspectives on working with children and young people, and what it means to be a young person growing up in this “digital age”. By …
