Natural rubber (NR) sponges are a renewable biopolymer material derived from milky sap (latex) from rubber trees. In this study, composite sponges of natural rubber and cellulose (NR-C) with various compositions were synthesized. The Dunlop process was employed to prepare the NR-C sponges in various contents of cellulose fibers as reinforcing agent. The interactions between green tea phenolic compounds, including (−)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and (−)-epigallocatechin (EGC), and various amine groups functionalized on carbon nanotube (CNT) were studied by all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The amine functional groups: ethylenediamine (EDA), triethylenetetramine (TETA), and melamine (MA) were considered in this study. Simulated results showed that amine molecular structure grafted on CNT surface affected diffusion and adsorption of EGCG and EGC. The EDA-functionalized CNT (EDA/CNT) provided a strong adsorption affinity to EGCG and EGC with their bicyclic segments located within the EDA layer. The medicinal plant Knema angustifolia has been used in Thai folk medicine for the treatment of various diseases, especially related to body tonic or blood tonic agent. Chemical data on this plant are scarce. A novel para-benzoquinone, angustiquinone (3), along with ten known compounds, rapanone (1), embelin (2), quercetin (4), kaempferol (5), bergenin (6), 11-O-acetyl bergenin (7), catechin (8), isovanillic acid (9), protocatechuic acid (10) and gallic acid (11) were isolated from the n-hexane and EtOAc extracts of the stems of K. angustifolia. This dissertation focused on the development of portable electrochemical sensors using the paper-based analytical device (ePAD) for the determination of the important compounds/biomarkers in various applications. Considering the target applications, this dissertation can be divided into three main parts including food safety application, environmental analysis and clinical application, respectively. Diabetes and diabetic nephropathy are two noticeable disorders in modern life. Chalcones are considered as a feasible candidate for these medication disorders due to the capability to activate AMPK relating to these two diseases. A series of chalcones with A-ring possessing 2'-hydroxy-, 3',4',5'-trimethoxyacetophenones or other types and B-ring decorated with mono-, di-, trisubstitution were accomplished by Claisen–Schmidt, etherification and hydrogenation reactions in almost moderate to high yield. 3-Methoxy group was found to be the best substituent for the activity in case of monosubstitution on B-ring. 3,4-Dimethoxy and 3,4-methylenedioxy groups on B-ring (63 and 65) enhanced the activity of disubstituted chalcones …

This research described new analytical devices for Ag+ and Hg2+ detection using bulk optode technique. The optode containing 25,27-di(benzothiazolyl)-26,28-hydroxycalix[4]arene (CU1) as an ion-selective ionophore, chromoionophore XIV as a lipophilic pH indicator, and KTpClPB as an ion-exchanger was prepared and used as a sensing agent in the proposed devices. The optode sensors responded to Ag+ and Hg2+ by changing the color from blue to yellow. The colorimetric-based detection was carried out by using the proposed paper-based analytical device. Aiming to discover novel bioactive secondary metabolites from genus Garcinia, we performed phytochemical and biological investigations of three Garcinia species collected from Indonesia. A series of chromatographic techniques and spectroscopic data analysis were used to isolate and characterize the Garcinia phytochemicals. The cytotoxicity of the isolated compounds was evaluated against five human cancer cell lines (HeLa S3, Hep G2, HT-29, MCF-7, and KB) using MTT assay. In this work, a new paper-based analytical device (PAD) that relied on fluorescence measurement was developed for label-free detection of hepatitis C virus (HCV) DNA. Pyrrolidinyl peptide nucleic acid (acpcPNA) was covalently modified onto the patterned cellulose paper to act as a specific probe for capturing the HCV DNA target according to Watson−Crick base-paring rules. Globba schomburgkii Hook.f. rhizomes were extracted with dichloromethane and fractionated using column chromatography to obtain 10 fractions (FA-FJ). The most active fractions, FE and FG, were further fractionated to give seven and thirteen sub-fractions, respectively. The fractions and sub-fractions were tested for antibacterial activity using 96-well plate microdilution method. The antibacterial activity of several sub-fractions (such as FE.B, FE.C, FE.D, FG.D, FG.G, and FG.H) were higher than that of the crude extract. New thread-based and paper-based devices for the determination of nitrite ions based on modified Griess reagent were developed. The surface of the materials was chemically modified with p-aminobenzoyl moiety and chromotropic acid was used as a coupling reagent. The functionalization of the materials was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. By using the thread-based device, the detection of nitrite was achieved by measuring the color band length. Anion recognition is an attractive area of research in recent decades as anions play an important role in a wide range of chemical, biological, and environmental processes. This dissertation reports three projects dedicated to anion recognition with applications in fluoride and cyanide sensing. The first project of the dissertation describes the chemistry of two novel anthracene derivatives bearing one and two dimesitylboryl substituents (compounds 1 and 2, respectively) for the complexation of anions. In this work, a paper-based analytical device (PAD) based on colorimetric assay using pyrrolidinyl peptide nucleic acid (acpcPNA) probe was developed as a sensor for the detection of Human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA. Dextrin-stabilized gold nanoparticles (d-AuNPs) was employed as a colorimetric reagent. The aggregation of d-AuNPs can be induced by positively charged acpcPNA generating a distinctive color change. Recently, fluorinated rhodacyanine has been disclosed as a highly effective agent against Leishmania donovani; it was shown that replacement of hydrogen with a fluorine atom on a benzothiazole unit significantly enhanced the anti-leishmanial activity. In this research, umbelliferone derivatives were evaluated for inhibitory activity of two enzymes, namely carbonic anhydrase II (CA II) and α-glucosidase. First, ether, brominated ether and ester derivatives of umbelliferone were synthesized, characterized and tested for CA II inhibitory activity. However, the inhibition data could not be used to make the exact conclusion about structure-activity relationship owing to their unrepeatable results. Moreover, Alzheimer’s disease (AD), an age-related degenerative disease, becomes a public health problem in aging society. Recent reports using cell culture models of AD suggest that amyloid precursor protein (APP), a protein causally related to AD, plays an important role as an inhibitor of neurite outgrowth. This study aimed to develop a population pharmacokinetic model to quantify the effects of genetic and nongenetic factors to nicotine pharmacokinetics after administration of nicotine gum to adult Thai smokers. ภูมิหลัง ผู้ป่วยเบาหวานมีโอกาสที่จะเกิดโรคไซนัสอักสบจากเชื้อราชนิดรุกรานได้ง่ายกว่าผู้ป่วยปกติ ซึ่งอัตราการเสียชีวิตจากโรคนี้ในผู้ป่วยเบาหวานมีความหลากหลายค่อนข้างสูงในแต่ละการศึษา วัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อศึกษาปัจจัยที่จะทำนายอัตราการรอดชีวิตของผู้ป่วยเบาหวานที่เกิดโรคไซนัสอักสบจากเชื้อราชนิดรุกราน วิธีการศึกษา การศึกษาแบบย้อนหลังนี้ได้จัดทำในโรงพยาบาลระดับตติยภูมิ 4 แห่ง ในประเทศไทย, มาเลเซีย และเมียนมาร์ โดยเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลในผู้ป่วยเบาหวานที่เกิดโรคไซนัสอักสบจากเชื้อราชนิดรุกราน ตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 2008 ถึง ค.ศ.2019 ผลที่ต้องการศึกษาคืออัตราการรอดชีวิต ปัจจัยทำนายที่นำมาวิเคราะห์ ได้แก่ อายุ, ระดับฮีโมโกลบินเอวันซีในเลือด, ภาวะเลือดเป็นกรดคีโต, ระดับเม็ดเลือดขาว, ภาวะน้ำตาลในเลือดสูง, ระยะเวลาที่เป็นโรคเบาหวาน, การใช้ยารักษาเบาหวานในปัจจุบัน, ระดับครีเอทีนีนในเลือด, และการกระจายของโรคไซนัสอักสบจากเชื้อราชนิดรุกรานเข้าไปที่ตา, คาเวอร์นัสไซนัส และโพรงสมอง ผลการศึกษา มีการเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลในผู้ป่วยเบาหวานที่เกิดโรคไซนัสอักสบจากเชื้อราชนิดรุกราน 65 ราย (อายุเฉลี่ย 57.9±13.4 ปี, เพศชาย 60%) ผลพบว่า อัตราการเสียชีวิตอยู่ที่ 21.5 % โดยพบว่าการกระจายของโรคไซนัสอักสบจากเชื้อราชนิดรุกรานเข้าคาเวอร์นัส ไซนัส (hazard ratio 5.1, 95% CI [1.4–18.2], p=0.01) และโพรงสมอง (hazard ratio 3.4, 95% CI [1.1–11.3], p=0.05) เป็นปัจจัยทำนายอัตราการเสียชีวิต ส่วนการรักษาเบาหวานเป็นปัจจัยที่ลดความเสี่ยงของการเสียชีวิต (hazard ratio 0.2, 95% CI [0.1–0.9], p=0.03) ด้านอัตราการรอดชีวิตในระยะเวลา 6 เดือนในผู้ป่วยที่มีการกระจายของโรคไซนัสอักสบจากเชื้อราชนิดรุกรานเข้าไปและไม่เข้าไปที่คาเวอร์นัสไซนัสอยู่ที่ 51.4% และ 83.6% ตามลำดับ, (p <0.01), เข้าไปและไม่เข้าไปที่โพรงสมองอยู่ที่ 53.3% และ 88.9% ตามลำดับ, (p <0.01) และมีการใช้ยารักษาเบาหวานและไม่มีการใช้ยารักษาเบาหวานอยู่ที่ 82.3% และ 57.5% ตามลำดับ, (p =0.05) สรุป การกระจายของโรคไซนัสอักสบจากเชื้อราชนิดรุกรานเข้าไปที่คาเวอร์นัสไซนัสและโพรงสมองเพิ่มความเสี่ยงต่อการเสียชีวิตในผู้ป่วยเบาหวาน การรอดชีวิตมีความสัมพันธ์กับการใช้ยารักษาเบาหวานในปัจจุบัน

Population movement and migration is a factor having significant implications for vector-borne disease transmissions. Objectives: This study aims to assess migrants’ access to malaria diagnosis and treatment in Yala province who have had fever in the previous three months and to evaluate the coverage and utilization of ITNs (insecticidal nets). Facebook users worldwide had been facing challenges of information credibility. This study aimed to address this issue among Thai Facebook users by focusing on health information in particular, through a lens of heuristic approach. Data were collected from 50 informants by in-depth interviews and 480 responses from online surveys. All participants were at least 18 years old with a minimum of one year experience in using Facebook. Efforts have been made to improve the low bioavailability causing by physiological limitations of ophthalmic drug administration. Topical lidocaine solution is a popular choice for ocular treatment, but less than 5% of topically applied dose reached to the target site. The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the antioxidant activity and tyrosinase inhibition activity of Murraya paniculata (Linn.) Jack leaves extract (MPE) obtained from different extraction solvents for the use of cosmetic purposes. The result showed that 75 % ethanolic extract presented the highest antioxidant activity (IC50 = 1.43 mg/mL), the total phenolic content of 66.12 mg GAE/g and the total flavonoids content of 7.83 mg QE/g. Wage Compensation Differentials For Job Risk Between Formal And Informal Workers, Pinyada Suwannarat

This research estimates compensating wage differentials for job risks for formal and informal workers in Thailand, the latter of whom are not covered by prevailing labor laws. Using data from the National Statistical Office’s Thai Labor Force Survey for years 2012 to 2018 merged with job fatality risk collected by the Social Security Office, the results show that the fatality risk rate has a positive, significant effect on wages. The value of statistical life for the median formal workers is 79.33 million baht compared to 41.5 million baht for the median informal worker. The objectives of this study were to 1) study the influences of the upper extremity (UE) positions and 2) the combination of UE movements coordinated with breathing patterns on chest wall movements and sensation of dyspnea in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
