Religious Heterogamy, Marital Quality, And Paternal Engagement, Young-Il Kim, Isaak Swan Jan 2019

Religious Heterogamy, Marital Quality, And Paternal Engagement, Young-Il Kim, Isaak Swan

Faculty Publications - Department of Sociology

Using data from a nationally representative sample of married fathers of school-aged children, we examined the association between religious heterogamy of parents and fathers’ involvement in children’s lives. We further examined whether that association is mediated by marital quality and father–child religious discord. Results showed that greater religious heterogamy is associated with less interaction and more relational distance between fathers and children. Results also suggested that fathers’ reports of marital happiness play an important role in mediating the association between religious heterogamy and paternal engagement. We concluded that religious fathers are more involved in their children’s lives insofar as their …

A Macromarketing View Of Sustainable Development In Vietnam, Clifford J. Shultz, Mark Peterson

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The authors apply methods and perspectives from several disciplines to explore the effects of Vietnam's economic development on various ecosystems, to offer a macromarketing view of sustainable development in Vietnam. An adapted version of the Sustainable Society Index was used to assess Vietnam's sustainability, how Vietnam's measures compare to other countries, with implications for future sustainable-development. Among several findings, Vietnam earns favorable sustainability ratings in absolute terms for water resources, healthy living, energy use, greenhouse gases, genuine savings, and employment. Ominously, Vietnam and some of its nearby neighbors post poor scores for energy savings and education. Going forward, energy savings, …

At The Intersection Of Due Process And Equal Protection: Expanding The Range Of Protected Interests, Vincent J. Samar Jan 2019

At The Intersection Of Due Process And Equal Protection: Expanding The Range Of Protected Interests, Vincent J. Samar

Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Are the Due Process and Equal Protection clauses interconnected? Justice Kennedy in Obergefell v. Hodges, the Supreme Court case holding the fundamental right to marry includes the right to a same-sex marriage, stated that they are profoundly connected in that each clause “may be instructive as to the meaning and reach of the other.” But exactly what instruction each doctrine might afford the other, Justice Kennedy did not say. An earlier Supreme Court decision, Plyler v. Doe, also suggested a connection, when the Court held unconstitutional a Texas statute baring funding for the education of undocumented children. But …

Contesting The Public Sphere: Within And Against Critical Theory, David Ingram Jan 2019

Contesting The Public Sphere: Within And Against Critical Theory, David Ingram

Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This chapter examines how European thinkers working from within and without the Frankfurt School of critical theory have understood the public sphere as a distinctive political category. First-generation members of the school rejected institutional democracy and mass politics as ideologies that mask domination. The succeeding generation, whose most important representative is Jürgen Habermas, rejected that diagnosis. Habermas’s more optimistic assessment of the emancipatory potential of the public sphere as a medium of rational learning sought a middle ground between critics and defenders of liberal democracy. This ambivalence provoked strong counter-reactions from systems theorists, such as Niklas Luhmann, and from adherents …

Consumer Competence Strategies, Spiritually Inspired Core Values And Locus Of Control: What Are The Links?, Gabriella Spinelli, Holly Nelson-Becker, Roberta Ligossi Jan 2019

Consumer Competence Strategies, Spiritually Inspired Core Values And Locus Of Control: What Are The Links?, Gabriella Spinelli, Holly Nelson-Becker, Roberta Ligossi

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

Ethical consumption has increased as a result of a more pressing environmental agenda, allowing consumers to assert their core values through marketplace decisions. The progressive secularisation of society has opened a gap on how religion and spirituality, defined in this paper as constructs that underpin core values, affect individuals through their consumption choices. An exploratory approach was taken in this research to investigate how consumers negotiate their daily shopping habits, whether they align with or diverge from their religious or secular core values, and whether an internal or external locus of control (LoC) was demonstrated. This qualitative study used the …

Depression Education As Primary Prevention: The Erika’S Lighthouse School-Based Program For High School Students, Michael S. Kelly, Heather Freed, Peggy Kubert, Sarah Greibler Jan 2019

Depression Education As Primary Prevention: The Erika’S Lighthouse School-Based Program For High School Students, Michael S. Kelly, Heather Freed, Peggy Kubert, Sarah Greibler

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

Major depression is a treatable and common mental health disorder for youth. Untreated depression is a major risk factor for youth who become suicidal and die by suicide. Recent focus in the school-based literature on creating universal mental health promotion programs have recognized the need for effective depression awareness education programs to assist youth in identifying symptoms of depression in themselves and their peers, and to encourage those youth to seek trusted adults for help. A quasiexperimental design (QED) was employed in two suburban Chicago high schools (n=652) to evaluate the intervention, Real Teenagers Talking About Adolescent Depression (RTTAAD), a …

Disability, Decoloniality, And Other-Than-Humanist Ethics In Anzaldúan Thought, Suzanne Bost Jan 2019

Disability, Decoloniality, And Other-Than-Humanist Ethics In Anzaldúan Thought, Suzanne Bost

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Gloria Anzaldúa’s writing has been read as decolonial based on her resistance to dominant national, racial, and cultural formations. This essay turns to unpublished documents from the Gloria Anzaldúa archive that are decolonial at a more fundamental level. In autobiographical writings about her own experiences with disability, as well as doodles and figure drawings, the alternate forms of human life that Anzaldúa depicts defy the logics of identification and differentiation that underlie colonial hierarchies. Refusing to fix bodies with labels, Anzaldúa accepted mystical encounters and inter-species minglings without judgment. She experienced her own disabling conditions (including a severe hormone imbalance …

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

This study evaluates the contribution of Extension-based community engagement design projects to the development of core technical competencies and professional values in the landscape architecture program at Utah State University. Many university design programs--including landscape architecture--employ community engagement to address local and regional design dilemmas. Programs within traditional agriculture schools often frame these activities as contributory to their institutions' land-grant missions. Engaged scholarship is well enumerated within the literature of landscape architecture. However, little has been published on how Extension facilitates these engagements or its contribution to the development of core competencies and professional values. Utah State University's (USU) landscape …

Flight training has received little attention in fatigue research. Only transfers of knowledge gained in commercial and military aviation have been applied to general aviation without bridging the gap to the training environment. The purpose of this study was to assess collegiate aviation students’ perceptions of lifestyle and mitigation strategies related to fatigue. Participants were recruited from a Midwestern university’s accredited Part 141 flight school and a partner fixed base operator (FBO). The researchers of this study used a survey questionnaire to gather quantitative and qualitative responses. The majority of participants (68%) had logged less than 250 flight hours and …

Big Five Technologies In Aeronautical Engineering Education: Scoping Review, Ruth Martinez-Lopez Jan 2019

Big Five Technologies In Aeronautical Engineering Education: Scoping Review, Ruth Martinez-Lopez

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

The constant demands that technology creates in aerospace engineering also influence education. The identification of the technologies with practical application in aerospace engineering is of current interest to decision makers in both universities and industry. A social network approach enhances this scoping review of the research literature to identify the main topics using the Big Five technologies in aerospace engineering education. The conceptual structure of the dataset (n=447) was analyzed from different approaches: at macro-level, a comparative of the digital technology identified by cluster analysis with the number of co-words established in 3 and 8 and, a keyword central structure …

Using SAS Enterprise Miner software, researchers used variables representing revenue and expenses from these data to develop and test …

There Is A Bias In Aviation Against Research That Is Perceived To Be “Easy”, Stephen Rice, Scott R. Winter, Nicola M. O'Toole Jan 2019

There Is A Bias In Aviation Against Research That Is Perceived To Be “Easy”, Stephen Rice, Scott R. Winter, Nicola M. O'Toole

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

The purpose of conducting research is to make contributions to the body of knowledge. In managing research studies, researchers are often forced to make decisions on a series of tradeoffs due to scarce resources. They may have to select participants from certain accessible populations, limit the time required to conduct the study, or use a minimal number of researchers due to funding constraints. The purpose of this current study was to examine for a possible bias on the perceived value of scientific research based on the location in which the data was collected, the amount of time required to complete …

Mindspace And Development Of Organizational Culture In Aviation Safety Management, Wilson Gilliam Jr Jan 2019

Mindspace And Development Of Organizational Culture In Aviation Safety Management, Wilson Gilliam Jr

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

Abstract

The organization’s role in establishing a culture fertile for safety development, risk management and mitigation is paramount. Barriers to the effectiveness of aviation safety systems may emerge when human biases interfere with the basic processes of safety management systems. Biases come in many forms and can serve as unconscious discriminatory behaviors against a person’s race, gender, sexual orientation, profession, skill level or other characteristic. Biases can also result from instinctive reactions and habitual patterns serving to protect one’s status, sense of belonging, desire to be viewed as normal and other characteristics. Minimizing biases within an organization is a key …

A Case Study Of 'Internationalisation At Home' Leading To A Proposal For Critical Global Pedagogies, Pollyanna Magne Jan 2019

A Case Study Of 'Internationalisation At Home' Leading To A Proposal For Critical Global Pedagogies, Pollyanna Magne

Plymouth Institute of Education Theses

This thesis examines current practice around ‘internationalisation at home’ (Jones, 2014). This is contextualised in single case study institution, in an isolated region of the UK, and takes place following the Brexit vote and the election of the Trump administration. The research utilised a multifaceted data collection approach including interviews, focus groups, written responses, and documentary analysis of publicly available documents. The data provides evidence that the majority of current internationalisation activity is economically motivated. Intercultural or global curriculum activity was evident but unstructured and limited. Central to this thesis is a discussion relating to the impact of insular thinking. …

Headteacher Experiences And Perceptions Of Standards-Led Reform In English Secondary Schools, Paul Stuart Norman Jan 2019

Headteacher Experiences And Perceptions Of Standards-Led Reform In English Secondary Schools, Paul Stuart Norman

Plymouth Institute of Education Theses

The purpose of this research was to explore the perceptions of Headteachers in English secondary schools, to determine how the protracted standards-led programme of high-paced reform, sometime referred to as ‘policy churn’, had impacted on their experiences and on standards in their schools. The research employed a mixed-methods approach using an online survey, followed by semi-structured interviews with 11 practicing Headteachers from across the spectrum of school type, location and experience. Findings were considered against a framework of concepts including technologies of neoliberal reform - marketization, new managerialism and performativity drawn from Ball; concepts of capital drawn from Bourdieu and …

Wild Entanglements: Exploring The Visions And Dilemmas Of ‘Renaturing’ Urban Britain, Cara Louisa Clancy Jan 2019

Wild Entanglements: Exploring The Visions And Dilemmas Of ‘Renaturing’ Urban Britain, Cara Louisa Clancy

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

In a rapidly urbanising world, where lands are increasingly repurposed for human endeavours, where seas and rivers carry the weight of mounting plastic, where species extinction is a common theme and where the effects of global climate change are a daily reality, there has never been a more pressing need to rethink nature-society relations and environmental ethics. This thesis draws insights from two cases of urban renaturing in Britain (London and Plymouth) to explore critical issues in contemporary environmental practice, including what matters for humans and nonhumans in such endeavours. Renaturing is here understood as an intentional, reflective attempt to …

Assessing Economic, Social, Political And Environmental Issues Related To Mega-Projects: A Case Study Of Merowe Dam In Sudan, Al-Noor Abdullah

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Contemporary global economic development has been undergoing a transition into multiple pathways aiming at sustainable development, poverty eradication and environmental protection especially in energy production to achieve socioeconomic development (Behera, 2006; Dunning, 2006). In developing countries, a shift from traditional development to modern economic development has begun since the 1970s (Amin & Thrift, 1995; Behera, 2006). Many developing countries have used mega-dams as a source of electricity generation and water supply for irrigation, urban and industrial uses. Dams are still preferred as the primary strategy to pursue economic development, which has been reinforced by increasing levels of urbanisation, industrialisation, agribusiness …

Brexit... A Lifetime Of Purgatory For The Uk's Environmental Laws - Or Is There A Stairway To Heaven?, Philip Connor Jan 2019

Brexit... A Lifetime Of Purgatory For The Uk's Environmental Laws - Or Is There A Stairway To Heaven?, Philip Connor

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

This paper considers the prospect that the United Kingdom's decision to withdraw from the European Union may have a detrimental effect on its environmental protections. Brexit may provide the opportunity to pursue a more environmentally focused agenda, but it is argued that the UK's plan to transpose EU legislation underestimates the complexity of the task and that the UK lacks the resources to replicate the system it currently enjoys. On this basis it is thought that a reordering of environmental law is more likely than a radical re writing of it.
