Stroop Interference With Sesame Street Characters, Christopher Koch Jan 2019

Stroop Interference With Sesame Street Characters, Christopher Koch

Faculty Publications - Psychology Department

The Stroop task is a robust task, making it a useful assessment of automatic processing, it is also associated with reading ability. This limits the utility of the Stroop task to children with a sufficient reading level. Non-word Stroop tasks may be alternatives for non-readers or beginning readers. For example, Prevor and Diamond (2005) showed that Stroop interference could be obtained using pictures (e.g., heart, frog). This study explored using Sesame Street characters to create Stroop interference. Elmo, Kermit, and Cookie Monster were shown in red, green, and blue to first through fourth grade students. RTs for color incongruent trials …

The Impact Of Olfactory Cues On Attention: The Case Of Stroop Interference, Jonathan K. Ham, Christopher Koch Jan 2019

The Impact Of Olfactory Cues On Attention: The Case Of Stroop Interference, Jonathan K. Ham, Christopher Koch

Faculty Publications - Psychology Department

This study explores the relationship between odor imagery, color associations, and visual attention through a Stroop-task based on common odor-color associations. This Stroop-task was designed using three fruits with odor-color associations: lime with green, strawberry with red, and lemon with yellow. Each possible word-color combination was lexically presented in the experimental trials. Three experiments were conducted that used the Stroop-task with different odors present. They suggest that odor imagery can affect visual attention, the inhibition of odor-color associations, and that odor imagery appears to be facilitated in the presence of a related odor.

This study was conducted to determine the long-term relatability of ImPACT scores among young athletes. Youth sport participants (n=294) who completed ImPACT tests one year apart were included in the study. Ages ranged from nine to 14 with a mean of 11.42 (SD = .96). The majority (n = 215) were males. Test-retest reliabilities for verbal memory, visual memory, response time, and impulse control were statistically significant but weak, ranging between .33 and .49. The index score had poor test-retest reliabilities (r = .26). Visual-motor test-retest reliability was also significant but moderate (r=.68). Scores for the verbal memory subtest and …

Context-Dependent And Context-Independent Effects Of D1 Receptor Antagonism In The Basolateral And Central Amygdala During Cocaine Self-Administration, Earnest S. Kim, K. Matthew Lattal Jan 2019

Context-Dependent And Context-Independent Effects Of D1 Receptor Antagonism In The Basolateral And Central Amygdala During Cocaine Self-Administration, Earnest S. Kim, K. Matthew Lattal

Faculty Publications - Psychology Department

One way that drugs of abuse perturb the dopamine system is by triggering large amounts of extracellular dopamine to efflux into limbic regions. The basolateral (BLA) and central (CeA) nuclei of the amygdala have been shown to play distinct roles in value representation of primary and conditioned reward. However, the precise role of dopaminergic receptors in the BLA and the CeA during reward-related behaviors remains to be determined. Here we investigate the effects of dopamine D1 receptor blockade in the BLA and the CeA during asymptotic performance of cocaine self-administration and in a novel application of contextual renewal under continued …

Physical stress, including high temperatures, may damage the central metabolic nicotinamide nucleotide cofactors [NAD(P)H], generating toxic derivatives [NAD(P)HX]. The highly conserved enzyme NAD(P)HX dehydratase (NAXD) is essential for intracellular repair of NAD(P)HX. Here we present a series of infants and children who suffered episodes of febrile illness-induced neurodegeneration or cardiac failure and early death. Whole-exome or whole-genome sequencing identified recessive NAXD variants in each case. Variants were predicted to be potentially deleterious through in silico analysis. Reverse-transcription PCR confirmed altered splicing in one case. Subject fibroblasts showed highly elevated concentrations of the damaged cofactors SNADHX, R-NADHX and cyclic NADHX. NADHX …

The tide is turning: service users are challenging the traditional bio-medical model, which focusses on illness treatment and neglects the role of patients in the provision of care. “We want person-centred care: people having as much control and influence over their care as possible – as patients, carers and members of communities” is the mission statement of National Voices. Formed in England in 2008 from an alliance of 150 health and social care charities, the purpose of the alliance is to provide a forum for stakeholder involvement of service users and carers in developing national policy. In the ongoing battle …

Environmental Loading Of Heritage Structures, Alison Raby, Alessandro Antonini, Dina D'Ayala, James M.W. Brownjohn

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Introduction This Special Issue, featuring Environmental Loading of Heritage Structures, provides a snapshot of current civil engineering approaches to assessing ageing structures under a variety of loads. The publication arose from a serendipitous sequence of interactions. Academics at the University of Plymouth were contacted by Trinity House in 2010 to investigate reported vibrations in their rock lighthouses when impacted by storm waves. A pilot study on the nearby Eddystone lighthouse, captured structural response data from the catastrophic storms of 2013/14, and paved the way for a more comprehensive project. The STORMLAMP project brought together expertise across various civil engineering disciplines: …

Deterrence And Prevention-Based Model To Mitigate Information Security Insider Threats In Organisations, N Safa, C Maple, Sm Furnell, M Azad, C Perera, M Dabbagh

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Previous studies show that information security breaches and privacy violations are important issues for organisations and people. It is acknowledged that decreasing the risk in this domain requires consideration of the technological aspects of information security alongside human aspects. Employees intentionally or unintentionally account for a significant portion of the threats to information assets in organisations. This research presents a novel conceptual framework to mitigate the risk of insiders using deterrence and prevention approaches. Deterrence factors discourage employees from engaging in information security misbehaviour in organisations, and situational crime prevention factors encourage them to prevent information security misconduct. Our findings …

Background: Performance status, a predictor of cancer survival, and ability to maintain independent living deteriorate in advanced disease. Understanding predictors of performance status trajectory could help identify those at risk of functional deterioration, target support for independent living and reduce service costs. The relationship between symptoms, analgesics and performance status is poorly delineated. Aim: The aim of this study is to determine whether demographics, analgesics, disease characteristics, quality-of-life domains and C-reactive protein predict the trajectory of Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) in patients with advanced cancer. Design: The study design is the secondary data analysis of the international prospective, longitudinal European …
