Combating malaria is almost a never-ending battle, as Plasmodium parasites develop resistance to the drugs used against them, as observed recently in artemisinin-based combination therapies. The main concern now is if the resistant parasite strains spread from Southeast Asia to Africa, the continent hosting most malaria cases. To prevent catastrophic results, we need to find non-conventional approaches. Allosteric drug targeting sites and modulators might be a new hope for malarial treatments. Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are potential malarial drug targets and have complex allosteric control mechanisms. Yet, studies on designing allosteric modulators against them are limited. Here, we identified allosteric …

Trained immunity and immune tolerance have been identified as long-term response patterns of the innate immune system. The causes of these opposing reactions remain elusive. Here, we report about differential inflammatory responses of microglial cells derived from neonatal mouse brain to increasing doses of the endotoxin LPS. Prolonged priming with ultra-low LPS doses provokes trained immunity, i.e., increased production of pro-inflammatory mediators in comparison to the unprimed control. In contrast, priming with high doses of LPS induces immune tolerance, implying decreased production of inflammatory mediators and pronounced release of anti-inflammatory cytokines. Investigation of the signaling processes and cell functions involved …

Reducing Cardiac Telemetry Nuisance Alarms Through Evidence-Based Interventions, Eleftheria T. Karapas, Kathleen L. Bobay
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Cardiac telemetry nuisance alarms are most often due to leads off and poor signal events. Nuisance alarms increase staff workflow interruptions, decrease staff trust in technology, and can compromise patient safety. Implementation of evidence-based interventions for daily care of cardiac telemetry patients should decrease the number of nuisance alarms.

Tensions And Exclusions: The Knotty Policy Encounter Between Sexual And Reproductive Health And Rights And Hiv, Susana T. Fried, Aziza Ahmed, Luisa Cabal
Faculty Scholarship
The International Conference on Population and Development or ICPD (Cairo, 1994) provided a global policy framework centred on reproductive rights instead of population control. Global standards on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and on HIV rapidly expanded throughout the 1990s.1 Considerable activist mobilisation in both arenas advanced health issues as politically salient decision-making venues where human rights and health advocacy were urgently needed, rather than scientific and technical showcases.
The ICPD, quickly followed by the Fourth World Conference on Women (1995), stressed that reproductive rights are anchored in governments’ human rights obligations and development commitments, including to …
Retention Relationships: Connecting Higher Education Employees To Students Through Student Organizations, Michelle Sanford
Retention Relationships: Connecting Higher Education Employees To Students Through Student Organizations, Michelle Sanford
Dissertations
This mixed methods study investigated higher education employee involvement with student organizations to determine if a connection existed between an employee’s engagement with a student organization and the employee’s retention at the university. Research shows that student involvement in campus life and with student organizations increases student retention (Astin, 1984); however, few research studies have focused on the impact this type of involvement has on employee retention. In this study, the researcher explored the following research questions: How does employee engagement with student organizations impact employee retention? Why do employees choose to support student organizations? The researcher examined these questions …

Blood Flow Restriction Exercise: A Systematic Review Of The Literature, James M. Mckivigan
College of Health & Human Services (TUN) Publications and Research
Blood flow restriction training is quickly gaining popularity in the United States. However, it is not without controversy. While there are many reported health benefits, there are equally as many risks. Most concerning is the lack of industry standardizations regarding cuff size and pressure. There is no required training to implement blood flow restriction training, which can be problematic when people with little knowledge practice this type of exercise. When blood flow is restricted, there is an impact on the cardiovascular system, nervous system, and muscular system. Damage can be done when blood flow is restricted with too much pressure …

An Assessment Of The Role Of Florida Pharmacists In The Administration Of Inactivated Influenza Vaccine To Pregnant Women, Oluyemisi O. Falope
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The influenza vaccine is a safe and effective vaccine in preventing influenza infection in the general population. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommend that pregnant women receive influenza inactivated vaccine (IIV) due to the high morbidity and mortality associated with influenza infection in pregnant women. Despite the recommendation, the U.S. national influenza vaccine uptake rates among pregnant women continue to remain low. Studies have shown barriers to influenza vaccine uptake in pregnant women to include issues with access, unavailability of vaccine, and lack of time during prenatal visits. These barriers can be overcome using pharmacists because, among healthcare providers, …

Natural hosts of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) avoid AIDS despite lifelong infection. Here, we examined how this outcome is achieved by comparing a natural SIV host, African green monkey (AGM) to an AIDS susceptible species, rhesus macaque (RM). To asses gene expression profiles from acutely SIV infected AGMs and RMs, we developed a systems biology approach termed Conserved Gene Signature Analysis (CGSA), which compared RNA sequencing data from rectal AGM and RM tissues to various other species. We found that AGMs rapidly activate, and then maintain, evolutionarily conserved regenerative wound healing mechanisms in mucosal tissue. The wound healing protein fibronectin …

Mechanical Engineering Theses
Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and sodium alginate (SA) are water-soluble polymers with excellent biocompatibility suitable for biomedical applications in wound dressings. In this study, pure PVA, pure SA, and blends of PVA/SA membranes were solvent cast into films followed by crosslinking in CaCl2, boric acid, and a mixture of CaCl2/boric acid solutions for 5, 10, and 30 minutes. Initial feasibility studies showed a strong correlation of film thickness to the observed mechanical properties. Further studies in solvent casting of blend PVA/SA films, using various polymer concentrations, yielded better film appearance with minimal physical changes after crosslinking. …

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) enables HIV patients to reduce disease progression. ART adherence is closely related to patients’ knowledge about the medical treatment. This study investigated the role of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in supporting ART-related knowledge seeking among older Chinese with HIV, using cross-sectional data collected from 2012 to 2013 in Guangxi, China. Of the 2987 HIV patients, 688 were 45 years or older and going through ART. We used an 11-item scale (α=0.69), which was developed based on existing literature, to assess ART-related knowledge to obtain a composite score (0-11). Less than 5% of the participants sought HIV-related …
