Negotiating Practices Among Nurse Practitioners: Is There A Gender Component And Does It Affect Salary?, Christy M. Lenahan, Donna M. Gauthier
Biennial Convention (CONV)
The nurse practitioner profession is dominated by females, yet studies demonstrate that male nurse practitioners out earn female nurse practitioners by approximately $13,000. The question posed is why does this phenomenon exist. Do negotiation practices differ among genders and do these differences play a role in the gender wage gap?

Objective: To investigate the relationship between stigma perception and demographic, clinical, and psychosocial variables. Methods: A sample of 50 patients with gout and prescribed urate-lowering medication (84% were males, mean serum urate 0.34 mmol/l) completed questionnaires on internalized and anticipated stigma, demographics, clinical gout-related variables, and psychosocial variables (illness perceptions, illness-related disability, illness-related body satisfaction, intentional nonadherence). Serum urate level was obtained from the most recent blood test. Results: In this sample, 26% experienced internalized stigma, 26% expected to be stigmatized by friends or family members, and 14% by health care workers. Univariate regression analyses showed that younger age, ethnicity …

Trauma and Acute Care Articles
BACKGROUND: Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) is a less-invasive technique for aortic occlusion (AO). Commonly performed in the emergency department (ED), the role of intraoperative placement is less defined. We hypothesized that operating room (OR) placement is associated with increased in-hospital mortality.
METHODS: The American Association for the Surgery of Trauma AORTA registry was used to identify patients undergoing REBOA. Injury characteristics and outcomes data were compared between OR and ED groups. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality; secondary outcomes included total AO time, transfusion requirements, and acute kidney injury.
RESULTS: Location and timing of catheter insertion …

Computing systems and mobile technologies have changed dramatically since the introduction of firewall technology in 1988. The internet has grown from a simple network of networks to a cyber and physical entity that encompasses the entire planet. Cyber-physical systems(CPS) now control most of the day to day operations of human civilization from autonomous cars to nuclear energy plants. While phenomenal, this growth has created new security threats. These are threats that cannot be blocked by a firewall for they are not only cyber but cyber-physical. In light of these cyber-physical threats, this paper proposes a security measure that promises to …

Introduction: Low and middle-income countries like South Africa are experiencing major increases in burden of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular conditions. However, evidence-based interventions to address behavioural factors related to these diseases are lacking. Our study aims to adapt the CDC's National Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) within the context of an under-resourced urban community in Cape Town, South Africa.
Methods/analysis: The new intervention (Lifestyle Africa) consists of 17 weekly sessions delivered by trained community health workers (CHWs). In addition to educational and cultural adaptations of DPP content, the programme adds novel components of text messaging and …

Light is a crucial element for plant growth and production. In areas where natural light is not sufficient for optimal plant growth and production, high pressure sodium (HPS) light sources are widely used. However, HPS lamps are considered not very electrically efficient generating high radiant heat and as a consequence, there has been a lot of interest in replacing HPS lamps with new more efficient lighting sources in the form of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The effects of three lighting sources (White LED, Blue/Red LED and HPS) on the growth, development and on the essential oil yield and quality of sweet …

People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) access information from different sources. They are being warned regularly on the need to stay away from all forms of risk practices which may cause further spread of the dreaded diseases. The study endeavour to investigate the level of information access opened to PLWHA and tried to find the relationship between information accessibility and risk practices.
The study adopted survey research design of correlational type. The target population was 8,135PLWHA in the selected three health institutions. Pooled standard error of proportion was used to determine 339 PLWHA and critical incident technique was used to …

Introduction: Oral anticoagulant (OAC) therapy significantly reduces the risk of thromboembolism among at-risk patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Current guidelines provide strong support for an OAC in men and women with AF and CHA2DS2-VASc scores of >2 and >3, respectively. In spite of this, previous data has suggested that up to 40% of these patients are not treated in accordance with guideline recommendations.
Hypothesis: We hypothesized that OAC therapy continues to remain significantly underutilized among at-risk patients with AF in real-world settings.
Methods: We sought to evaluate the prevalence of OAC underuse and contributing factors in an ambulatory population of …
