Children Learn What They Live: Addressing Early Childhood Trauma Resulting In Toxic Stress In Schools, Kate Mcgruder Jan 2019

Children Learn What They Live: Addressing Early Childhood Trauma Resulting In Toxic Stress In Schools, Kate Mcgruder

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Though there is extensive research on the health outcomes of individuals who have experienced adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), society at large has not embraced this ground-breaking research and many still believe that the use of harsh punishment for students provides the same intended result as a discipline approach that teaches coping skills and the management of emotions. These traumatic experiences can result in toxic stress and create long term effects on children’s social-emotional and cognitive development that impair academic performance. This commentary will discuss trauma-informed educational practices have been developed to aid in recovery in the school environment.

Elementary Teacher Perceptions Of Professional Development On The Neuroscience Of Learning, Wendy Bana, Jeff Cranmore Jan 2019

Elementary Teacher Perceptions Of Professional Development On The Neuroscience Of Learning, Wendy Bana, Jeff Cranmore

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore how knowledge on the neuroscience of learning may inform the practice of teaching and classroom instruction. Twelve purposively selected elementary teachers from a private school in California were asked about their perceptions of the nature of a professional development (PD) course on the neuroscience of learning and also their perceptions of the influence such training had on their practice. The conceptual framework for this study was Desimone and Garet’s (2015) model of effective professional development. Themes from semi structured interviews, focus groups, and observations of the teacher participants were identified …

Teachers' Perceptions Of Preparedness To Teach Students With Disabilities, Tara Kaczorowski, Sonia M. Kline Jan 2019

Teachers' Perceptions Of Preparedness To Teach Students With Disabilities, Tara Kaczorowski, Sonia M. Kline

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Providing a meaningful education to all learners, including those with disabilities, is the responsibility of all educators. This study utilized a multi-method survey design to examine and compare general and special education teachers’ perceived preparedness to teach students with disabilities as well as the experiences each group believes contributed to that preparedness. Special education teachers’ rated themselves as more prepared for both instruction and social inclusion of students with disabilities than general education teachers, both after completing their undergraduate programs and after gaining teaching experience. While teachers across both groups valued similar experiences during their undergraduate programs, such as clinical …

Utilizing Family Systems Theory In College Readiness Counseling?, Bagmi Das, Beth H. Gilfillan Jan 2019

Utilizing Family Systems Theory In College Readiness Counseling?, Bagmi Das, Beth H. Gilfillan

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Postsecondary planning includes academic, emotional, and financial challenges for which many students and families are unprepared. School counselors will be able to better prepare students and their families for the college readiness process through understanding and implementing concepts from Family Systems Theory. This manuscript focuses on core tenets of Family Systems Theory that are directly applicable to the college readiness experience. The authors then propose a new framework to utilize these concepts and guide school counselor-student-family interactions. The manuscript proposes the READ-E framework to incorporate Family Systems Theory into college readiness counseling for K-12 students.

Orthodontic Correction Of Transposed Maxillary Canine And First Premolar In Mixed Dentition, Lan-Tien Lin, Yi-Min Liu, Yuen-Yung Tsang Jan 2019

Orthodontic Correction Of Transposed Maxillary Canine And First Premolar In Mixed Dentition, Lan-Tien Lin, Yi-Min Liu, Yuen-Yung Tsang

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

Transposition is rare and occurred commonly on maxillary canine and premolar. To extract or not to extract, to correct or not to correct the dental transposition teeth, it’s a tough decision. A 12-year-old boy was referred for orthodontic correction because of bad alignment at upper dentition. His dental age was in late mixed dentition. Both upper deciduous canines were still retained. Left canine was buccally blocked-out, and first premolar was in palatal crossbite with the lower premolars. Panoramic film showed impacted upper right canine and transposed left canine and first premolar. The treatment duration took 3.5 years. The upper left …

To Do Or Not To Do? Slow Orthodontic Extrusion For Implant Site Development In Esthetic Zone At The Anterior Maxilla, Hui-Chen Tsai, Chung-Chen Jane Yao, Cheing-Meei Liu Jan 2019

To Do Or Not To Do? Slow Orthodontic Extrusion For Implant Site Development In Esthetic Zone At The Anterior Maxilla, Hui-Chen Tsai, Chung-Chen Jane Yao, Cheing-Meei Liu

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

Slow orthodontic extrusion (SOE) for implant site development, was introduced in 1991. It has been more than 20 years since this treatment was applied in our clinical practice. In this paper, we investigate surgeon's expectation of SOE for special requirements of immediate implantation by a clinical case. We also review case reports/case series searched from PubMed and inspect the power of evidence of these reports from the integration of data collection, and try to define the value of SOE. If the SOE cannot eliminate at least one surgical procedure, we need to consider the necessity of SOE before implant surgery.

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

This case report describes the management of an adult patient presenting with a skeletal Class III malocclusion, mandibular protrusion, upper incisor proclination and mandibular arch spacing by a modified surgery-first approach. A 26-year-old man had skeletal Class III and dental Class III malocclusion with concave facial profile, midface deficiency and mandibular prognathism with chin deviation to left. His dental manifestation presented anterior crossbite, upper incisors proclination and spacing in his mandibular arch. Treatment was performed with a modified surgery-first approach, which included a short presurgical alignment phase. In the maxilla, the significant maxillary crowding was relieved by 14 and 24 …

Orthodontic Treatment Of Class Ii Malocclusion With Single Maxillary Incisor, Chien-Cheng Chen, Yi-Horng Chen Jan 2019

Orthodontic Treatment Of Class Ii Malocclusion With Single Maxillary Incisor, Chien-Cheng Chen, Yi-Horng Chen

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatment of a Class II malocclusion case with single maxillary central incisor was presented in the case report. The treatment plan consisted of removing one maxillary central incisor instead of premolars. Bilateral maxillary lateral incisors were mesialized for space closure and substitution for maxillary central incisors. The morphology of maxillary lateral incisors was modified to mimic the maxillary central incisors. After treatment, both occlusion and esthetics was improved, and the patient was satisfied with the results.

A Comprehensive Diagnostic System For Orthodontists- Beyond Angle’S Classification, Ib Leth Nielsen Jan 2019

A Comprehensive Diagnostic System For Orthodontists- Beyond Angle’S Classification, Ib Leth Nielsen

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

Traditionally orthodontists have used the classification system developed by Edward H. Angle in 1900 to describe the malocclusion of an orthodontic patient. This classification is very limited with respect to the information it provides and should be replaced by a more detailed and inclusive description of a patient’s malocclusion as well as the underlying biology. In this review article we propose a new technique that ensures all pertinent information gets considered and we suggest a systematic approach to a more differentiated orthodontic diagnosis. Our approach divides the diagnosis into clearly defined categories that bring together the clinical findings into a …

Mandibular Molar Protraction For Edentulous Space Closure: A Systematic Review, Yueh-Tse Lee, Proudchompoo Paungmalit, Eric Jein-Wein Liou

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

Objective: Orthodontic molar protraction into the edentulous space is a treatment option for patients with missing mandibular molars or premolars. Space closure by moving the molars mesially into edentulous ridge is difficult, especially in the mandible. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the dental and periodontal changes after mandibular molar protraction into an edentulous ridge. Material and Methods: Literature search was conducted using PubMed, Medline (Ovid), Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Scopus until September 2019 limited to English publications. Specific inclusion and exclusion criteria were extracted and analyzed. Study quality was objectively assessed. Results: In total, 490 studies were …

Effects Of Canagliflozin On Renal And Urinary Angiotensin Converting Enzyme 2 (Ace2) And Neprilysin (Nep) In Db/Db Diabetic Mice, Unmesha Hemant Thanekar

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Diabetes is one of the major causes of chronic kidney disease (CKD) which could lead to end-stage renal disease. Angiotensin-II (Ang-II), a major bioactive peptide of renin angiotensin system (RAS) plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis and progression of diabetic nephropathy. The reno-degenerative effects of Ang-II can be partially counteracted by Ang (1-7). Therefore, Ang (1-7) forming enzymes, angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and neprilysin (NEP), are hypothesized to have reno-protective effects. In our previous studies, we have demonstrated increased renal shedding of ACE2 and NEP in the urine of type-2 diabetic mice which was attenuated by normalizing hyperglycemia …

What It Means To Be Out: Queer, Trans, And Gender Nonconforming Identities In Library Work, Zoe Fisher, Stephen G. Krueger, Robin Goodfellow Malamud, Ericka Patillo

Dartmouth Library Staff Publications

Queer library workers face the decision of how and when to express their gender identities and sexual orientations at work. In what ways does being “out” in the library workplace impact our work? This coauthored chapter brings together the perspectives of two academic librarians, a current LIS grad student, and an academic library administrator to provide multiple ways of seeing the complexities of expressing gender identity and sexual orientation in the library workplace. We discuss the intersection of library values, politics, change management, patron interactions, and work environments.

Evaluating State Anxiety Levels In Nursing Students, Rachel Stevens, Rachel Nussbaum, Tyler Blake Jan 2019

Evaluating State Anxiety Levels In Nursing Students, Rachel Stevens, Rachel Nussbaum, Tyler Blake

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Anxiety, dependent upon the frequency and severity, can be a serious problem that reduces physical, cognitive, and clinical performance. Nursing students have been found to experience especially high levels of state and trait anxiety which, according to Dorothea Orem’s self-care deficit theory, causes a deficit in health promotion and the health of oneself. There is little evidence available about how progression through a baccalaureate nursing program in the United States impacts anxiety. This research investigates anxiety in baccalaureate nursing students and how progression through the program influences self-reported anxiety levels. A descriptive cross-sectional study was performed on a convenience sample …

By pairing up with Ridge Tool Company in Elyria, Ohio, we developed a competitive redesign based on their K-45 Sink Machine. Some goals set forth at the beginning were to take the machine from a corded system with a brushed motor to a battery powered one with a brushless motor, and to address some consumer concerns in regards to weight support and ease-of-use. Our final objective was to assemble a functional prototype that could be submitted to Ridge Tool Company for review. This redesign should help this machine remain competitive in the field, and give us the chance to present …
