Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) constitute one of the most promising third-millennium technologies and have wide range of applications in our surrounding environment. The reason behind the vast adoption of WSNs in various applications is that they have tremendously appealing features, e.g., low production cost, low installation cost, unattended network operation, autonomous and longtime operation. WSNs have started to merge with the Internet of Things (IoT) through the introduction of Internet access capability in sensor nodes and sensing ability in Internet-connected devices. Thereby, the IoT is providing access to huge amount of data, collected by the WSNs, over the Internet. Hence, …

Chlorhexidine Oral Care: From Prevention Of Pneumonia To Risk Factor For Mortality, Stijn I. Blot Nov 2019

Chlorhexidine Oral Care: From Prevention Of Pneumonia To Risk Factor For Mortality, Stijn I. Blot

Biennial Convention (CONV)

To view the video of this presentation, please scroll down to the embedded streamable version below. To view the slides without voiceover, please click on the slide deck file in this record.

Chlorhexidine oral care is often applied in hospitalized patients for maintaining oral health or for the prevention of pneumonia albeit that evidence is not consistent across distinct patient populations. Recent insights however, presume that this oral antiseptic might increase mortality. These findings incite thorough reappraisal of this widespread practice.

Building A Text Classifier For Analyzing Scholar’S Twitter Data, Olga Maria Belikov

Instructional Psychology and Technology Graduate Student Projects

This measurement project is designed to be able to measure proportions of professional and personal uses of social media of scholars. With social media becoming a prominent tool used by scholars, there are a slew of complications that may arise that accompany the combination of personal and professional use. Understanding the proportions of use may allow us to better understand the degree to which scholars are combining or not combining their personal and professional use and may unpack a deeper understanding of online identity, personal and professional time balance, and a more quantitative understanding of the ways in which scholars …

Playing A Bad Character But Endorsing A Good Cause: Actor-Character Fundamental Attribution Error And Persuasion, Riva Tukachinsky Nov 2019

Playing A Bad Character But Endorsing A Good Cause: Actor-Character Fundamental Attribution Error And Persuasion, Riva Tukachinsky

Communication Faculty Articles and Research

The study examines the implications of fundamental attribution error, wherein viewers misattribute qualities of the fictional characters onto the actors who portray them. In an experiment, individuals watched an actor playing a role of either a hero or a villain. Then, participants watched the same actor in a public service announcement. In line with the attribution theory, viewers rated the actor’s personality less positively, reported a weaker parasocial relationship with the actor, and listed more negative thoughts about the advertisement after exposure to the actor playing a villain.

Reclaiming Our Subjugated Truths—Using Hip Hop As A Form Of Decolonizing Public Pedagogy: The Case Of Didier Awadi, Joanna D. Da Sylva

Journal of Hip Hop Studies

This paper explores how Senegalese Hip Hop pioneer, Didier Awadi, uses Hip Hop as a form of decolonizing public pedagogy that renders the contributions of Pan-African leaders visible to Africa and the world, contributions that are often omitted and vilified by mainstream history. I argue that Awadi’s work provides a strategy for reclaiming oral literature, particularly storytelling, as a legitimate way of knowing, teaching and learning history. In his album Présidents d’Afrique, Didier Awadi uses rap and traditional African music to retell the story of our resistant past through an African frame of reference. The data is comprised of …

Characterization And Optimization Of Carbon Based Electrocatalysts And Supports For Fuel Cell Applications, Abhinav Poozhikunnath Nov 2019

Characterization And Optimization Of Carbon Based Electrocatalysts And Supports For Fuel Cell Applications, Abhinav Poozhikunnath

Doctoral Dissertations

The use of expensive platinum-based catalysts has been a major obstacle for the widespread use of low temperature fuel cells. As a result, there is significant commercial and scientific interest in replacing platinum-based electrocatalysts with cost-effective alternatives of comparable performance. This thesis explores the process-structure-property relationship of platinum group metal-free (PGM-free), metal-nitrogen-doped carbon (M-N-C) electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction synthesized by a flame spray pyrolysis process called Reactive Spray Deposition Technology (RSDT). Metal-Nitrogen-Carbon (M-N-C) type Platinum Group Metal-free (PGM-free) electrocatalyst, synthesized directly from liquid solution precursors by the partial combustion of organic material in the RSDT flame. Central to this work …

The Potential Of Radium-224 As A Tracer Of Timescales Of Gulf Of Mexico Crude Oil Exposure To The Marine Environment, Matthew T. Kurpiel Nov 2019

The Potential Of Radium-224 As A Tracer Of Timescales Of Gulf Of Mexico Crude Oil Exposure To The Marine Environment, Matthew T. Kurpiel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Petroleum pollution in the marine environment can be deleterious to coastal and marine ecosystems and can have sustained effects for years. While oil slicks on the surface of the ocean are tracked with relative ease using satellite-based technology, deep sea, neutrally-buoyant hydrocarbon plumes remain exceedingly difficult to track. We provide evidence for the utility of Ra-224 as a potential hydrocarbon tracer to determine the marine exposure time of crude oil. We employed time course incubations to constrain a time dependent Ra-224 release signature and tested a variety of timescales, temporal resolutions, oil sources, seawater, and experimental treatments to determine potential …
