Impact Of Cover Crop Usage On Soilborne Diseases In Field Nursery Production, Sujan Dawadi, Fulya Baysal-Gurel, Karla M. Addesso, Jason B. Oliver, Terri Simmons

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Soilborne pathogens are a significant economic problem for nursery production in the Southeastern United States. The goal of this study was to determine the impact of cover crops on soilborne disease suppressiveness in such systems. Soils from red maple (Acer rubrum L.) plantation fields grown with and without cover crops were sampled, either while the cover crops were growing (pre-disked) or post-season, following cover crop incorporation into the soil (post-disked). Greenhouse bioassays were conducted using red maple seeds on inoculated (with Rhizoctonia solani (J.G. Kühn) or Phytophthora nicotianae (Breda de Haan)) and non-inoculated field soils. The damping-off, root rot disease …

Farmwomen In The Academy: Rurality And Leadership In Higher Education, Kathryn A. E. Enke, Leslie R. Zenk Nov 2019

Farmwomen In The Academy: Rurality And Leadership In Higher Education, Kathryn A. E. Enke, Leslie R. Zenk

Administration Publications

Using collective biography, this paper examines the ways that rural identity mediates the leadership of two women working as administrators in higher education in the United States. We, the authors, examine our own leadership, as college administrators raised in rural environments, and seek to describe how the notion of rurality manifests in our administrative roles. Our collective biography reveals that rural identity influences our definitions of home, fear of irrelevancy, relationships with others, and work ethic. At the same time, our interesting identities as rural, women leaders are fluid and constantly shifting, manifesting themselves in both implicit and explicit ways. …

Crime By Policewomen In The United States, 2005-2014, Chloe Wentzlof, Philip M. Stinson

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

This study is a replication and extension of Stinson, Todak, and Dodge’s (2015) study of crime by policewomen across the United States in years 2005-2007. The sample for the current study includes 597 arrest cases involving 555 female police officers, each of whom were arrested during the decade 2005-2014. The arrested female officers were employed by 353 state and local law enforcement agencies located in 273 counties and independent cities within 44 states and the District of Columbia. Findings indicate that crimes committed by policewomen are most often violence-related, alcohol-related, and/or profit-motivated offenses. Descriptive and bivariate statistics are reported on …

Since the discovery of penicillin, microbes have been a source of antibiotics that inhibit the growth of pathogens. However, with the evolution of multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains, it remains unclear if there is an abundant or limited supply of natural products to be discovered that are effective against MDR isolates. To identify strains that are antagonistic to pathogens, we examined a set of 471 globally derived environmental strains (env-Ps) for activity against a panel of 65 pathogens including spp., spp., , and spp. isolated from the lungs of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. From more than 30,000 competitive interactions, 1,530 individual inhibitory …

Faculty Research 2019

Aberrant crypt foci (ACF) are the earliest morphologically identifiable lesions in the colon that can be detected by high-definition chromoendoscopy with contrast dye spray. Although frequently associated with synchronous adenomas, their role in colorectal tumor development, particularly in the proximal colon, is still not clear. The goal of this study was to evaluate the profile of colon-adherent bacteria associated with proximal ACF and to investigate their relationship to the presence and subtype of synchronous polyps present throughout the colon. Forty-five subjects undergoing a screening or surveillance colonoscopy were included in this retrospective study. Bacterial cells adherent to the epithelia of …

Transcriptional Profiling Predicts Running Promotes Cerebrovascular Remodeling In Young But Not Midlife Mice., Kate E Foley, Hongtian Stanley Yang, Leah C. Graham, Gareth R Howell

Faculty Research 2019

BACKGROUND: The incidence of dementia and cognitive decline is increasing with no therapy or cure. One of the reasons treatment remains elusive is because there are various pathologies that contribute to age-related cognitive decline. Specifically, with Alzheimer's disease, targeting to reduce amyloid beta plaques and phosphorylated tau aggregates in clinical trials has not yielded results to slow symptomology, suggesting a new approach is needed. Interestingly, exercise has been proposed as a potential therapeutic intervention to improve brain health and reduce the risk for dementia, however the benefits throughout aging are not well understood.

RESULTS: To better understand the effects of …

Screening Tools For Hiv-Associated Neurocognitive Disorders Among Adults Living With Hiv In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Scoping Review, Patrick N. Mwangala, Charles R. Newton, Melanie Abas, Amina Abubakar Nov 2019

Screening Tools For Hiv-Associated Neurocognitive Disorders Among Adults Living With Hiv In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Scoping Review, Patrick N. Mwangala, Charles R. Newton, Melanie Abas, Amina Abubakar

Institute for Human Development, East Africa

Background: People living with HIV are at risk of developing HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) which adversely affects their quality of life. Routine screening of HAND in HIV care is recommended to identify clinically important changes in cognitive functioning and allow for early interventions. However, HAND detection in routine clinical practice has never been reported in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), partly due to a lack of adequately standardized screening tools. This review was conducted to identify the commonly used screening tools for HAND in SSA and document their psychometric properties and diagnostic accuracy.
Methods: We searched Ovid Medline, PsycINFO and Web of …

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Stroke remains a leading cause of death and disability worldwide despite recent treatment breakthroughs. A primary event in stroke pathogenesis is the development of a potent and deleterious local and peripheral inflammatory response regulated by the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-1 (IL-1). While the role of IL-1β (main released isoform) has been well studied in stroke, the role of the IL-1α isoform remains largely unknown. With increasing utilization of intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) or thrombectomy to pharmacologically or mechanically remove ischemic stroke causing blood clots, respectively, there is interest in pairing successful cerebrovascular recanalization with neurotherapeutic pharmacological interventions (Fraser et …

The Best Is The Enemy Of The Good, David B. Gillette Nov 2019

The Best Is The Enemy Of The Good, David B. Gillette

All Faculty Scholarship

When I began my residency, I wanted to deepen my clinical expertise so I could better serve the growing population of older adults. I thought my perfectionism would be an asset in this process and help me be successful. As a high achiever, I focused on meeting internal and external expectations, not on growth. What I did not think of was how to better myself as a person—or that I even needed to do so. I did not know that perfectionism can be a weakness that affects not only me but also those around me.

I am not alone in …

A Review Of Autobiographical Memory Studies On Patients With Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders, Yujia Zhang, Sara K. Kuhn, Laura Jobson, Shamsul Haque Nov 2019

A Review Of Autobiographical Memory Studies On Patients With Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders, Yujia Zhang, Sara K. Kuhn, Laura Jobson, Shamsul Haque

Psychology Student Publications

Background

Patients suffering from schizophrenia spectrum disorders demonstrate various cognitive deficiencies, the most pertinent one being impairment in autobiographical memory. This paper reviews quantitative research investigating deficits in the content, and characteristics, of autobiographical memories in individuals with schizophrenia. It also examines if the method used to activate autobiographical memories influenced the results and which theoretical accounts were proposed to explain the defective recall of autobiographical memories in patients with schizophrenia.

Methods

PsycINFO, Web of Science, and PubMed databases were searched for articles published between January 1998 and December 2018. Fifty-seven studies met the inclusion criteria. All studies implemented the …

Exploring Grief And Mourning In Work Teams: A Phenomenological Multi-Case Study, Ashley L. Kutach

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research study was to explore the experiences of team members when a fellow team member returns to work after the unexpected death of a loved one. The participants in the study gave accounts of their personal experiences, and the overall team experiences, following a team member’s return to work. The goal of the study was to investigate these experiences to provide insight that is not available in current literature.

This research was a phenomenological multi-case study based on six theoretical literature foundations: grief dual process model, social support model, team-member exchange theory, social network theory, group …
