Finding Your Way Through: Vicarious Trauma And The Qualitative Researcher, Laura Tejada, Michele Kane
Finding Your Way Through: Vicarious Trauma And The Qualitative Researcher, Laura Tejada, Michele Kane
Faculty Research and Creative Activities Symposium
Vicarious trauma, also known as compassion fatigue or secondary trauma, is more than a topic of study for qualitative researchers. It is a risk we run because we connect deeply with our participants and their stories while conducting qualitative research. The qualitative researchers’ connection to participant stories doesn’t end when the interview is over. We must remain intimately engaged with these stories throughout the data preparation and analysis phases of research, often over a number of years. As we are exposed again and again to the narratives of our participants, even when data is de-identified and aggregated into different themes, …

Digital Role-Playing Games As Means For Dialogue And Change For Marginalized Teachers, Jonathan Mendels, Amit Schejter
Spect-actor: A Journal of Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed
This study presents a theoretical model that incorporates the theories of Paulo Freire, Augusto Boal and Amartya Sen and uses their ideas to create an innovative digital role-playing game for teachers on ‘To-Be-Education,’ a platform originally designed for teacher-student role-playing . We then demonstrate how Sen’s ‘capabilities approach’, Freire’s ‘pedagogy of hope’ and Boal’s ‘theatre of the oppressed’ are adapted to tools of empowerment for Arab-Israeli teachers, who belong to a community marginalized by State policies. The teachers design their own games and base the scenarios on their own real educational and professional dilemmas. They then re-enact these situations to …
The Teaching Of English In Lebanese Classrooms: A Critical Look At The Dominant Curricula And Practices, Nadia Bhuiyan
The Teaching Of English In Lebanese Classrooms: A Critical Look At The Dominant Curricula And Practices, Nadia Bhuiyan
Spect-actor: A Journal of Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed
Despite proclaimed attempts at post-colonial curricula, I argue that the teaching of English in Lebanon is a pronounced example of the deep-seated perpetuation of colonial privilege vis-à-vis curricular choices. To counter this cycle of privilege, I call for the application of culturally relevant pedagogy in English classrooms as a step in the direction of liberatory curricular reform in Lebanon. Culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP) attempts to use students’ cultural competence in an empowering manner to help them achieve academic success. This article examines the use of the imposed curriculum in one English for Academic Purposes classroom in Lebanon, followed by the …
Architected Polymer Foams Via Direct Bubble Writing, Claas Willem Visser, Dahlia N. Amato, Jochen Mueller, Jennifer A. Lewis
Architected Polymer Foams Via Direct Bubble Writing, Claas Willem Visser, Dahlia N. Amato, Jochen Mueller, Jennifer A. Lewis
Student Publications
Polymer foams are cellular solids composed of solid and gas phases, whose mechanical, thermal, and acoustic properties are determined by the composition, volume fraction, and connectivity of both phases. A new high-throughput additive manufacturing method, referred to as direct bubble writing, for creating polymer foams with locally programmed bubble size, volume fraction, and connectivity is reported. Direct bubble writing relies on rapid generation and patterning of liquid shell–gas core droplets produced using a core–shell nozzle. The printed polymer foams are able to retain their overall shape, since the outer shell of these bubble droplets consist of a low-viscosity monomer that …

Faith Healing: An Unregulated Health Domain, Farhan Mushtaq
MSJ Capstone Projects
Despite Pakistan having adopted modern forms of treatment as part of its official healthcare regime, many non-traditional treatment types are still prevalent in the country - faith healing being one of them. It has a wide acceptance among the masses, be it country’s cities or rural areas.
There are many factors that have forced people to seek alternative forms of treatment: inadequate healthcare facilities, weak healthcare legislation, and religious misconceptions surrounding health-related concerns.
This capstone project is focused on highlighting the flaws in Pakistan’s healthcare regulations that have failed to devise a robust mechanism to curtail the practice. It includes …

Major Challenges Of Us Goat Producers And Way Forward, Tom Boyer
Major Challenges Of Us Goat Producers And Way Forward, Tom Boyer
Professional Agricultural Workers Journal
Abstract
Three limiting resources to feed the world in the future are arable land, water, and Ag talent. Obviously, goat production is in this mix, because we need to use appropriate technology to improve goat production. Also, goat production is influenced by imports, markets, and a fragmented industry. Although imports may be good to fill in shortfalls in production, they may harm the industry due to their relatively lower prices compared to domestically produced goat meat. The markets are unstructured and generally lack accurate price discovery, which ultimately, makes pricing difficult. Furthermore, there have been the challenges of a fragmented …

Attention Restraint, Working Memory Capacity, And Mind Wandering: Do Emotional Valence Or Intentionality Matter?, Alexandra C. Nieto, Matthew S. Welhaf, Anum Mallick, Jonathan B. Banks
Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches and Lectures
Attention restraint appears to mediate the relationship between working memory capacity (WMC) and mind wandering (Kane et al., 2016). Prior work has identifed two dimensions of mind wandering—emotional valence and intentionality. However, less is known about how WMC and attention restraint correlate with these dimensions. Te current study examined the relationship between WMC, attention restraint, and mind wandering by emotional valence and intentionality. A confrmatory factor analysis demonstrated that WMC and attention restraint were strongly correlated, but only attention restraint was related to overall mind wandering, consistent with prior fndings. However, when examining the emotional valence of mind wandering, attention …

U. S. - Moroccan Relations In The Context Of The Anfa Conference, Karim Bejjit
Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective
This essay seeks to shed new light on the intricate course of U.S.-Moroccan relations following the landing of American troops on the Atlantic coasts of Morocco. The Anfa Conference and Sultan Mohamed V’s dinner meeting with President Roosevelt marked an important stage in the process of Moroccan struggle for independence. Roosevelt’s personal interest in the Moroccan situation may have accentuated the inconsistencies in U.S. foreign policy in the 1940s regarding the French colonial empire and confronted its fundamental idealism with the exigencies of pragmatic politics. The vicissitudes of the war and America’s deep commitment to its French ally as well …

The Transcription Factor Pu.1 Mediates Enhancer-Promoter Looping That Is Required For Il-1 Erna And Mrna Transcription In Mouse Melanoma And Macrophage Cell Lines, Soon-Duck Ha, Woohyun Cho, Rodney P. Dekoter, Sung Ouk Kim
Paediatrics Publications
The DNA-binding protein PU.1 is a myeloid lineage– determining and pioneering transcription factor due to its ability to bind “closed” genomic sites and maintain “open” chromatin state for myeloid lineage–specific genes. The precise mechanism of PU.1 in cell type–specific programming is yet to be elucidated. The melanoma cell line B16BL6, although it is nonmyeloid lineage, expressed Toll-like receptors and activated the transcription factor NF-B upon stimulation by the bacterial cell wall component lipopolysaccharide. However, it did not produce cytokines, such as IL-1 mRNA. Ectopic PU.1 expression induced remodeling of a novel distal enhancer (located 10 kbp upstream of the IL-1 …

Service-Learning Research For Development: An Option For The Poor In Practice Through Social Analysis And Community Engagement, Thomas M. Kelly, Kate L. Nolt
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
A group of faculty, staff and students from Creighton University conducted a research project using a strengths-based approach to create a community health needs assessment (CNHA) in the fall of 2017. The instruments, including a survey to determine health status, a focus group questionnaire, an environmental scan and an individual interview instrument, were developed to help shift the paradigm from which many international medical missions are conducted with Creighton’s community partner in the Dominican Republic, the Centro de Educación para la Salud Integral (CESI). In the process of creating, developing, implementing, assessing and reformulating this strength-based CHNA, researchers encountered both …
Software Design For Probabilistic Safety: Stochastic Reachability And Circadian Control, Joseph D. Gleason
Software Design For Probabilistic Safety: Stochastic Reachability And Circadian Control, Joseph D. Gleason
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Stochastic reachability is an important verification tool that provides probabilistic assurances of safety in a variety of contexts. In engineered systems, safety may be synonymous with the ability of the system to avoid "bad" constraints on the state space, that constitute collision, departure from a flight envelope, or other undesirable phenomenon. In biomedical systems, assurance of safety (such as the mandate to ``do no harm'') are considerably complicated by the fact that there is a lack of physics-driven models, extensive signal processing is needed to capture the underlying state of the system, and the stochasticity inherent to the system may …

Molluscum Contagiosum Infection With Features Of Primary Cutaneous Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma., Doaa Shalabi, John Ringe, Jason B. Lee, Neda Nikbakht
Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers
CD30+ T cell pseudolymphomas (CD30+ PSL) are a group of benign inflammatory cutaneous disorders that can develop in settings of viral infections or drug reactions. Owing to their histological similarities to malignant lymphomas, these benign infiltrates are occasionally misdiagnosed as malignant, causing significant concerns for patients and physicians. Herein, we report a patient with CD30+ PSL associated with molluscum contagiosum whose initial biopsy revealed atypical large CD30-expressing cells, leading to a misdiagnosis of primary cutaneous anaplastic large cell lymphoma and referral to our cutaneous lymphoma clinic. We report this case to demonstrate that reactive CD30+ infiltrate associated with molluscum contagiosum …

Declining enrollments, rising costs and increasing student debt have caused college administrators, potential students, and outside stakeholders to focus on certain student outcomes, including retention and timely degree completion. Colleges and universities are not only collecting data in these two areas, they are searching for strategies, which might have a positive effect. Research has provided a variety of factors, which contribute to retention and timely degree completion. High-impact practices, such as service learning, student faculty research and internships featured several characteristics that may contribute to retention and timely degree completion. Internships offer several advantages, such as preparation for future careers …
A Bayesian Mixture Model For The Analysis Of Allelic Expression In Single Cells., Kwangbom Choi, Narayanan Raghupathy, Gary Churchill
A Bayesian Mixture Model For The Analysis Of Allelic Expression In Single Cells., Kwangbom Choi, Narayanan Raghupathy, Gary Churchill
Faculty Research 2019
Allele-specific expression (ASE) at single-cell resolution is a critical tool for understanding the stochastic and dynamic features of gene expression. However, low read coverage and high biological variability present challenges for analyzing ASE. We demonstrate that discarding multi-mapping reads leads to higher variability in estimates of allelic proportions, an increased frequency of sampling zeros, and can lead to spurious findings of dynamic and monoallelic gene expression. Here, we report a method for ASE analysis from single-cell RNA-Seq data that accurately classifies allelic expression states and improves estimation of allelic proportions by pooling information across cells. We further demonstrate that combining …

Pharmacy Faculty/Staff Publications
Purpose: Dilute intravenous (IV) admixtures of dexamethasone sodium phosphate (DSP) are becoming increasingly used in antiemetic regimens to prevent chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV). Based on its chemical structure and previous studies, DSP is known to be susceptible to hydrolysis and oxidation under certain conditions. There are limited data to directly support the selection of IV diluents, storage conditions, and beyond-use dates for the dilute IV solutions of DSP used in the antiemetic regimens. This study was designed to investigate these parameters. Methods: A stability-indicating high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method was first developed for the analysis of DSP. Commercially available …
