Efforts To Improve Roadway Safety: A Collaborative Approach Between Amish Communities And A Professional Engineering Society, S. Dee Jepsen, Andrew "Dewey" Mann Nov 2019

Efforts To Improve Roadway Safety: A Collaborative Approach Between Amish Communities And A Professional Engineering Society, S. Dee Jepsen, Andrew "Dewey" Mann

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

Lighting and marking recommendations for animal-drawn buggies and wagons were first established in 2001 through an American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) Engineering Practice, EP576.1. Many Anabaptist communities who primarily rely on animal-drawn vehicles utilize this practice for marking their buggies and wagons; however they do not utilize the practice for their low-profile vehicles, such as pony carts. Visibility for pony carts on public roads is important to protect the operators, typically women and children. Following a series of tragic deaths in their community, the Holmes and Wayne Counties, Ohio, Amish safety committee raised the concern of having …

Antecedents And Consequences Of Work Alienation – A Critical Review, Ahmed Kh. Muttar, Mohammed Youssif Abo Keir, Omar Rabeea Mahdi, Islam A. Nassar

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

Purpose – In the past few decades, the antecedents of work alienation have been analyzed various times in several studies. The consequences of work alienation were also investigated in available literature. However, literature that is more recent seems to be incomprehensive, and does not incorporate both issues of antecedents and outcomes together simultaneously. Therefore, this study tends to focus on exploring the available extensive literature on theories of organizational antecedents and consequences of work alienation. Design/methodology/approach – A systematic literature review of traditional and contemporary theoretical and empirical research studies is conducted to establish the interrelationship between organizational antecedents and …

Good People Don't Need Medication: How Moral Character Beliefs Affect Medical Decision-Making, Sydney Elizabeth Scott, Justin F. Landy Nov 2019

Good People Don't Need Medication: How Moral Character Beliefs Affect Medical Decision-Making, Sydney Elizabeth Scott, Justin F. Landy

Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches and Lectures

How do people make decisions? Prior research focuses on how people's cost-benefit assessments affect which medical treatments they choose. We propose that people also worry about what these health decisions signal about who they are. Across four studies, we find that medication is thought to be the "easy way out", signaling a lack of willpower and character. These moral beliefs lower the appeal of medications. Manipulating these beliefs--by framing medication as a signal of superior willpower or by highlighting the idea that treatment choice is just a preference--increases preferences for medication.

Pathogenic Resistance In Soil Microbes For Drug Discovery, Saachi Dalvi '20, Neha Maddali '20

Student Publications & Research

Antimicrobial resistance has become a prevalent phenomenon and now poses a great threat to public health. In the United States alone, more than 2 million citizens suffer from a disease related to antimicrobial resistance, of which an estimated 23,000 people will die per year.1 To combat the growing threat of such illnesses, several researchers have tested for new microbes from the soil that exhibit antimicrobial properties against these newly resistant pathogens. A study conducted by A.A. Elbendary and his research group collected soil isolates from Egypt and identified bacterial samples K. kristinae, K. rosea, S. griseus, and S. flaveolus as …

In developing countries, people with severe/chronic illnesses rely heavily on medicinal plants. Unfortunately, very little is known about the chemical composition of these plants, which means that their effect on diseases is unknown. One of the most popular medicinal plants in South Africa is the African Potato, which is used to treat Tuberculosis, a global health emergency in many developing countries. It is also known to have anti-inflammatory properties and can help with the symptoms of AIDS. While all of these uses have been cited for the plant, very few studies have been conducted to confirm the African Potato as …

Utilizing The Community-Based Research Approach To Examine Mental Health And Support Services Issues Related To Hiv-Associated Neurocognitive Disorder, Renato M. Liboro

Psychology Faculty Research

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated neurocognitive disorder is an emergent public health problem known to HIV researchers and scientists, but unfortunately, is a concern that still needs to be better recognized by people living with HIV and HIV service providers. Research studies have reported that between 30 to 50% of people living with HIV who have access to combination antiretroviral therapy are and will be affected by this disorder. This raises the need to find more appropriate research approaches for examining issues that will significantly impact people living with HIV experiencing or at risk of developing neurocognitive impairments. People living with …

Bridging The Gender Gap: A Journey Of Women And Men In Communications Leadership, Steven Bruce Pelham Nov 2019

Bridging The Gender Gap: A Journey Of Women And Men In Communications Leadership, Steven Bruce Pelham

Theses and Dissertations

"Throughout history, there have been various gaps: racial, gender, income, education, skills gaps...society today is not any different"(Andrews, 2017). Despite advances to close these gaps, a large gap still remains in communications leadership: the gender gap. Approximately 75 percent of practitioners are female and female practitioners only make up 20 percent of senior-level positions (Oakes & Hardwick, 2017). Existing research suggests there are several reasons why a gap exists: an unconscious bias that favors male leaders (Devillard, Hunt, & Yee, 2018), only 60 percent of women have the confidence they can advance into leadership positions (KPMG, 2018), lack of mentorship …

Hypoxia-Inducible Gene Domain 1 Proteins In Yeast Mitochondria Protect Against Proton Leak Through Complex Iv, Ngoc H. Hoang, Vera Strogolova, Jaramys J. Mosley, Rosemary A. Stuart, Jonathan Hosler

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Hypoxia-inducible gene domain 1 (HIGD1) proteins are small integral membrane proteins, conserved from bacteria to humans, that associate with oxidative phosphorylation supercomplexes. Using yeast as a model organism, we have shown previously that its two HIGD1 proteins, Rcf1 and Rcf2, are required for the generation and maintenance of a normal membrane potential (ΔΨ) across the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM). We postulated that the lower ΔΨ observed in the absence of the HIGD1 proteins may be due to decreased proton pumping by complex IV (CIV) or enhanced leak of protons across the IMM. Here we measured the ΔΨ generated by complex …

Teaching Qualitative Research Methods Online: A Scoping Review Of The Literature, Chareen Snelson Nov 2019

Teaching Qualitative Research Methods Online: A Scoping Review Of The Literature, Chareen Snelson

The Qualitative Report

Online education has become well established as an avenue for flexible access to educational opportunities. Those who teach qualitative research methods online may find it difficult to locate research or best practice literature to inform practice. A scoping review was conducted to identify and synthesize the literature about teaching qualitative research methods courses online. Eleven peer-reviewed journal articles were identified through a scoping review of the literature. The TPACK framework, which defines teacher knowledge in terms of technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge, was used as a conceptual framework. Results from this scoping review indicate that online qualitative research methods educators …

Increasing The Health Outcomes Of Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Oklahomans Through Tobacco Awareness And Cessation Support, Sharon Baker, Glenna Cooper, Jimmy Mitchell, Judy Morgan

JADARA

As a consequence of limited access to health information, Deaf and hard of hearing (Deaf/ hh)’ individuals may be at higher risk for health complications and tobacco-related diseases. To address this issue, Communication Service for the Deaf (CSD) of Oklahoma sought funding from the Oklahoma Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust to implement the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Tobacco Use and Cessation Program. The five-year project began in 2006; it was the first major health education initiative in the state that focused on the Deaf community. Prevalence rates and demographic information were collected regarding tobacco use among Deaf/hh participants. In addition, …

The Effect Of Mothers’ Asl Skill Level On The English Literacy Of Their Deaf Children, Shauna M. Buchholz, Lorin Lachs, Patrick Boudreault

JADARA

Previous studies demonstrated a positive relationship between deaf children's ASL acquisition and their English literacy skills and the importance of parental language input. This study examined the role of mothers' ASL skill in the English literacy skills of their deaf children. Mothers and their deaf children in grades six through nine took the TGJASL-R. Correlations were performed to determine if a relationship exists between the mothers' ASL skill level, and the children's English literacy measured by the STAR test. No significant relationship was found; marginal significance was found between the students' ASL skill and their English literacy score.

Childhood Trauma: Considering Diagnostic And Culturally Sensitive Treatment Approaches For Deaf Clients, Tomina Schwenke Nov 2019

Childhood Trauma: Considering Diagnostic And Culturally Sensitive Treatment Approaches For Deaf Clients, Tomina Schwenke

JADARA

As the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-IV-TR, 1994) is under revision, the complexity of diagnosing and treating childhood trauma with the current trauma-related diagnoses, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Acute Stress Disorder (ASD)is being debated (van der Kolk,2 005). Regarding deaf individuals, significant differences in symptom presentation (e.g., avoidance/numbing, hyperarousal, and re-experiencing symptoms) suggest that caution is needed when using the current criterion for the diagnosis of PTSD within this population (Schild & Dalenberg, 2011). Despite diagnostic uncertainties, it is generally accepted that regardless of hearing status, early childhood is a critical period for the development …
