Relationship Between Initial High-Sensitivity Cardiac Troponin-T Morbidity And Mortality In Patients After St-Elevation Myocardial Infarction In Erbil City, Iraq, Hmh Ameen, Mh Alwan, N King

School of Biomedical Sciences

Background: ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients treated with primary percutaneous intervention (PPCI) are at a high risk of death and MACE (Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events). One method to stratify these patients’ risk could be high-sensitivity cardiac troponin-T (hs-cTnT). Unfortunately; data using this approach is limited. The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is a correlation between initial levels of cTnT in STEMI patients with MACE. Methods: Initial hs-cTnT levels were measured in 167 patients with STEMI undergoing PPCI. Patients were divided into 2 groups: group A hs-cTnT below the median (83 patients); group B hs-cTnT above …

Seasonal Plasticity In GabaA Signaling Is Necessary For Restoring Phase Synchrony In The Master Circadian Clock Network, Kayla Rohr, Harshida Pancholi, Shabi Haider, Christopher Karow, David Modert, Nicholas J. Raddatz, Jennifer A. Evans

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Annual changes in the environment threaten survival, and numerous biological processes in mammals adjust to this challenge via seasonal encoding by the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). To tune behavior according to day length, SCN neurons display unified rhythms with synchronous phasing when days are short, but will divide into two sub-clusters when days are long. The transition between SCN states is critical for maintaining behavioral responses to seasonal change, but the mechanisms regulating this form of neuroplasticity remain unclear. Here we identify that a switch in chloride transport and GABAA signaling is critical for maintaining state plasticity in the SCN …

Psu Black Studies At Risk, Professor Says: Administration Called Out For Toxic Environment, Beverly Corbell, Ethan Johnson

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

This school year is the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Black Studies Department at Portland State University, a momentous occasion for celebrating the formation of a degree curriculum devoted to the history, culture and politics of black people, but the African-American director of the department doesn’t feel much like celebrating.

Ethan Johnson, who has headed the department for the past 15 years, says the university is failing to support the black studies curriculum and even more is failing to listen to the concerns of minority students and faculty at the school, a result that is disastrous to their …

Gravity As A Continuum: Effects Of Altered Gravity On Drosophila Melanogaster Immunity, Amber M. Paul, Joe Olivieri, Sharmila Bhattacharya Nov 2019

Gravity As A Continuum: Effects Of Altered Gravity On Drosophila Melanogaster Immunity, Amber M. Paul, Joe Olivieri, Sharmila Bhattacharya

Publications

The impact of spaceflight on immune function is undoubtedly a critical focus in the area of space biology and human health research. Heat shock proteins (Hsp) are an evolutionarily conserved family of proteins that are expressed in response to cellular and physiological stressors, experienced during radiation exposure, confinement, circadian rhythm disruption, and altered gravity (hypergravity experienced at launch/landing and microgravity experienced in-flight). In particular, Hsp70 aids in the folding of proteins, facilitates the movement of proteins across the membranes during signal transductions and can stimulate innate immunity. Since Hsp70 is induced during cellular stress, and can act as a stimulator …

Modeled Microgravity Induces Neutrophil Extracellular Trap (Net)Osis Formation And Reduced Phagocytosis Of Polymorphonuclear Neutrophils, Amber M. Paul Nov 2019

Modeled Microgravity Induces Neutrophil Extracellular Trap (Net)Osis Formation And Reduced Phagocytosis Of Polymorphonuclear Neutrophils, Amber M. Paul

Publications

Spaceflight can dysregulate immunity, by way of increasing granulocytes numbers with impaired function. Polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) are granulocytes that are first responders to infection or injury, and consist of the largest pool of immune cells in humans. PMNs function during innate immunity, through phagocytosis and promotion of inflammation, via the release of reactive oxygen species (ROS) mediators and granule-containing enzymes, such as myeloperoxidase (MPO) and NADPH oxidase-2 (NOX-2). In addition, neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation is another mechanism of PMN surveillance that works independently of engulfment phagocytosis, and is a last resort function that can induce NETosis or PMN-specific cell …

Barriers To Quality Early Mathematics Teaching And Learning, Bilge Cerezci Nov 2019

Barriers To Quality Early Mathematics Teaching And Learning, Bilge Cerezci

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

Growing evidence demonstrates that early mathematics teaching and learning experiences, among all educational resources, are especially important contributors to students’ learning and later achievement in mathematics and other areas, particularly in low-SES students who are at risk of falling behind in mathematics achievement. As early mathematics education has assumed heightened importance, quality of early mathematics teaching and learning experiences has attracted national attention, and the pressure to perform in mathematics has trickled down to preschoolers and kindergarteners. How can nations make sure their citizens are equipped with the necessary math skills and knowledge in order to be competent and productive …

Buying A Better World: Students As Conscious Consumers, Sean Murray

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

Conscious consumer movements have given people opportunities to “vote with their dollars” – that is, buy from companies with values matching their own, and forgo products from businesses with questionable policies and practices. After providing brief context about consumerism and conscious consumption, I focus on a Conscious Consumer Project that I teach in my First Year Writing courses at St. John’s University. Excerpts of student writing emphasizing labor issues, as well as student reflections on the project, are shared as I discuss possibilities for revising and improving the assignment. The possibilities discussed include increasing opportunities for students to do academic …

Indocyanine-Green-Assisted Near-Infrared Dental Fluorescence Imaging To Detect Common Dental Diseases, As Compared With Dental X-Ray, Yoshita Viraj Holamoge

LSU Master's Theses

Oral health is indicative of a person’s overall health. Even with advances in medical science, dental diseases are very much prevalent in our society. Dental imaging techniques help in the early detection of these dental diseases and eventually avoids the risk of poor oral health as well as medical expenses. Current dental imaging techniques rely mostly on X-ray imaging whose ionizing property is a concern amongst the population. Near-infrared spectrum is known to have tissue penetration property and they belong to the non-ionizing part of the electromagnetic spectrum. This study utilized a contrast agent assisted near-infrared imaging for common dental …

The Effects Of Forced Migration On The Houma Of Louisiana, Jessica R. Parfait Nov 2019

The Effects Of Forced Migration On The Houma Of Louisiana, Jessica R. Parfait

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis seeks to understand the effects of multiple forced migrations on the Indigenous Houma of southern Louisiana. The causes of these migrations have taken many forms such as the dispossession of land and relocating for access to resources. Through ethnographic interviews and historic research, I seek to critically engage the past to understand how it has molded the present and the lives of tribal citizens. I evaluate the power dynamics enacted upon the Houma who have recorded contact with Europeans dating to 1686 but have never been recognized as a sovereign entity by the United States.

Hyperdemocracy: Euroscepticism And Elections In The United Kingdom, Edward Reminiskey Nov 2019

Hyperdemocracy: Euroscepticism And Elections In The United Kingdom, Edward Reminiskey

History in the Making

In the early hours of June 24th, 2016, the results of a referendum asking the United Kingdom to determine its membership status in the European Union were made official. Decided by a slim majority, the decision was made by the electorate to leave the European Union. To characterize this moment as being uncertain would be an understatement. It stood as a major turning point in twenty-first century politics, and presents an opportunity to explore the recent phenomenon affecting liberal democracy. “Brexit,” as it would be referred to, instigated scholars to ask important questions about the contemporary state of liberal democracy. …

Racial Ambiguity In The Borderlands: New Mexico’S African American Soldiers, 1860-1922, Jacqulyne Anton

History in the Making

In the nineteenth century United States, African Americans faced severe forms of racism that manifested through institutions of slavery, segregation and discrimination. Antebellum and Civil War historians focus on African American resistance to white supremacy and oppression through various forms of resistance, some of which include violent revolts and the search for freedom in the North. With that being said, however, many historians seem to ignore the role of the US-Mexico borderlands in African Americans’ contestation of the racist laws of the American North and South. This article examines African Americans' experiences in the US-Mexico borderlands of New Mexico during …

Music Is Power: Nueva Cancion’S Push For An Indigenous Identity, Jason Garcia Nov 2019

Music Is Power: Nueva Cancion’S Push For An Indigenous Identity, Jason Garcia

History in the Making

The emergence of Nueva Cancion musicians during 1960’s Chile, such as Victor Jara and Inti-Illimani, played an important role in propelling the left wing revolutionary movements that supported Salvador Allende’s presidential victory in 1970, making him the first democratically elected Socialist in the Western Hemisphere. Although there is much scholarly literature that deals with the social and political aspects of Nueva Cancion, historians have failed to recognize how indigeneity played a crucial role in the shaping the identity that Nueva Cancion musicians embodied through their music. With the power of music, Nueva Cancion became a militant song movement that represented …

History in the Making

On January 1, 1994 the North American Free Trade Agreement went into effect with the espoused intention of opening trade relationships in North America. In Mexico City, the leaders of the Partido Revolucionario Institucional were celebrating this economic victory which they assured would bring about economic prosperity and wealth for Mexico. Yet while the PRI celebrated, the Ejercito Zapatista de Liberacion Nacional, emerged from the Lacandon Jungle in the southern state of Chiapas and took control of the city of San Cristobal de las Casas. Their demands focused on social and economic justice for the indigenous campesinos whose lands would …

Imperial Fastballs: The Cultural Imperialism Of American Baseball, Cameron Van Note Nov 2019

Imperial Fastballs: The Cultural Imperialism Of American Baseball, Cameron Van Note

History in the Making

From the eighteenth and nineteenth century Imperialism was a major instigator for conflict across the globe, being split into many different subcategories such as economic, cultural, and military imperialism. This paper looks at the aspect of American Baseball being used as a tool of cultural imperialism over Japan prior to, and well after, World War II. Baseball in Japan was different than other examples of Imperialism because of how Japan accepted and integrated baseball culture into their own, resulting in Japanese and American players bonding over the culture surrounding the game. It was not easy to form these bonds however, …

Connections Between Sensory Sensitivities In Autism; The Importance Of Sensory Friendly Environments For Accessibility And Increased Quality Of Life For The Neurodivergent Autistic Minority., Heidi Morgan

PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal

Many adults diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experience sensory processing sensitivities. Research shows that 94.4% of adults with ASD report co-occurring sensory differences that impact their daily life in a significant way. These sensitivities can create accessibility challenges for the autistic neurominority, especially for autistic individuals with hypersensitivities. This literature review has two purposes. First, it seeks to better understand how these sensory differences impact the experience of individuals in the neurodivergent autistic minority and the correlations between sensory overload, accessibility, mental, emotional and physical health. Secondly, the epistemology influencing this review is critical in nature and is aligned …
