What Happened To This Child? Identifying Factors That Influence The Identification And Categorization Of Child Maltreatment In The United States, Erika Tullberg Nov 2019

What Happened To This Child? Identifying Factors That Influence The Identification And Categorization Of Child Maltreatment In The United States, Erika Tullberg

Dissertations and Theses

Background: Research has shown that adverse childhood experiences are strongly linked with health outcomes over the life course, and that child maltreatment – generally defined as physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional maltreatment and neglect – can have an immediate, negative impact on child health and development and a longer-term impact on adolescent and adult health, including the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the U.S. With such significant consequences, the accurate identification of child maltreatment is critical.

Child welfare caseworkers are charged with protecting the safety and fostering the well-being of children who have been identified as maltreated or …

Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (Picc) And The Efficacy Of Tip Placement Confirmation With Ecg Ultrasound-Guided Technology And Chest Radiography, Elizabeth A. Morrell

Dissertations

The aim of this study was to appraise the efficacy of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) tip placement confirmation using a fully-integrated magnetic tracking system and ECG ultrasound-guided insertion technology performed at the patients' bedside by venous access nurses and validated by the post-insertion chest radiography (CXR) report. Labor costs and time were compared with the interventional radiology (IR) team and the venous access nurses to determine if there was a noteworthy cost difference with PICC insertions. PICCs have gained popularity due to improved ECG ultrasound-guided tip navigation technology. Real-time ECG ultrasound-guided technology is the safest, most accurate method of …

Language, Indigenous Peoples, And The Right To Self-Determination, Noelle Higgins, Gerard Maguire Nov 2019

Language, Indigenous Peoples, And The Right To Self-Determination, Noelle Higgins, Gerard Maguire

New England Journal of Public Policy

Language has always played a significant role in the colonization of peoples as an instrument of subjugation and homogenization. It has been used to control nondominant groups, including Indigenous peoples, often leading to their exclusion or assimilation. Many Indigenous groups, however, use language as a tool to connect the members of their community, to assert their group identity, and to preserve their culture. Thus, language has been used both as a means of oppression and as a mobilizer of Indigenous groups in their struggles for national recognition. Recognizing the significance of language in the identity and culture of Indigenous peoples, …

Molecular Survey Of Helminths Infecting Ground Dwelling Birds In The Grouse Subfamily Tetraoninae, Briana M. Sesmundo Nov 2019

Molecular Survey Of Helminths Infecting Ground Dwelling Birds In The Grouse Subfamily Tetraoninae, Briana M. Sesmundo

Honors College Theses

Alaskan grouse and ptarmigan (Galliformes) are important avian game species in Alaska. Interestingly, gallids harbor a fairly diverse helminth fauna, particularly cestodes, which may make birds with high parasite loads more susceptible to predation. Unfortunately, there is limited information available on the helminth fauna of Alaskan gallids, and no molecular surveys. The present study aims to develop baseline data on diversity of intestinal and subcutaneous (filariid) helminth infections in galliforms using morphological and molecular (DNA) approaches. These data can then be used to better understand changes in helminth community structure given current environmental volatility. The intestines, cloaca, liver and kidneys …

Testing An Intervention To Decrease Catastrophizing In Persons With Fibromyalgia, Pamela Jean Nelson Nov 2019

Testing An Intervention To Decrease Catastrophizing In Persons With Fibromyalgia, Pamela Jean Nelson

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of a brief psychoeducational nursing intervention to alter catastrophizing and improve coping with fibromyalgia, a syndrome of chronic, widespread pain. Catastrophizing is defined as a negative way of thinking about pain that interferes with the development of pain coping self-efficacy, the confidence a person has in their ability to manage pain. In fibromyalgia, catastrophizing has demonstrated a strong relationship to pain severity and daily functioning, but brief interventions targeting catastrophizing have not been tested. Theoretical framework. Bandura's social cognitive model emphasizing self-efficacy as a determinant of behavior was used as …

Humpback Whale Movements And Behavior In Response To Whale-Watching Vessels In Juneau, Ak, Alicia Schuler, Sarah Piwetz, Jacopo Di Clemente, David Steckler, Franz Mueter, Heidi C. Pearson Nov 2019

Humpback Whale Movements And Behavior In Response To Whale-Watching Vessels In Juneau, Ak, Alicia Schuler, Sarah Piwetz, Jacopo Di Clemente, David Steckler, Franz Mueter, Heidi C. Pearson

Faculty, Staff, and Students

The whale-watching industry in Juneau, Alaska relies primarily on the presence of North Pacific humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae). To meet demands from the rapidly growing tourism industry, the number of whale-watching vessels in this region has tripled over the last 18 years. As a result, increased vessel presence could have negative effects on humpback whales, ranging from short-term behavioral disturbance to long-term impacts. The current humpback whale viewing regulations are outdated and may not be as effective as they were 18 years ago, when both the whale-watching industry and humpback whale population were smaller. The present study assessed how humpback …

Biology Faculty/Staff Publications

Microfluidic devices allow for the manipulation of fluids, particles, cells, micro-sized organs or organisms in channels ranging from the nano to submillimeter scales. A rapid increase in the use of this technology in the biological sciences has prompted a need for methods that are accessible to a wide range of research groups. Current fabrication standards, such as PDMS bonding, require expensive and time consuming lithographic and bonding techniques. A viable alternative is the use of equipment and materials that are easily affordable, require minimal expertise and allow for the rapid iteration of designs. In this work we describe a protocol …

Extending Lifetime Of Sensor Networks Based On Sleep-Scheduled Routing Algorithm, Zhuojin Pan, Stuart D., Luo Zhen, Yang Hua Nov 2019

Extending Lifetime Of Sensor Networks Based On Sleep-Scheduled Routing Algorithm, Zhuojin Pan, Stuart D., Luo Zhen, Yang Hua

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In order to minimize energy consumption of sensor nodes in wireless sensor networks, this paper presents an Energy Efficient Sleep-Scheduled Tree-Based Routing Protocol (EESSTBRP) that modifies the chain formation in PEGASIS to create a set of paired and unpaired nodes in the network based on a distance and sensing range threshold. The paired nodes switch between active and sleep modes so as to remove redundant data and save battery power. To minimize energy consumption as nodes switching between the modes, this scheme considers the transitioning to be done based on a point of near depletion of the nodes’ residual …

Learned Hand And The Objective Theory Of Contract Interpretation, Daniel P. O'Gorman Nov 2019

Learned Hand And The Objective Theory Of Contract Interpretation, Daniel P. O'Gorman

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

When scholars discuss Judge Learned Hand’s approach to contract interpretation, they refer to him as a “great formalist commercial lawyer” who was a “pure objectivist” exhibiting a “crusader’s zeal” for the objective theory of contract. He is identified as a leading advocate of the classical approach to contract interpretation, which dominated American law in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. But Hand’s reputation—built from three of his opinions—clashes with his reputation as a pre-Realist critic of formalism and as an intentionalist in statutory interpretation. This Article explores just how far Hand applied a strict objective approach to contract interpretation …

First In Elections, First In Reforms: Can New Hampshire Be First In The Nation To Implement Changes To Campaign Finance?, Lisa M. Bianco

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

As Americans prepare for the 2020 presidential election, one thing is for certain—the candidates will make their way into your home. While they might not physically step foot into your living room, they will appear on your television, on your laptop, and on your phone. Why? Because in the United States, campaigns are won by candidates communicating with you, the voters. It is not feasible to physically shake hands with the entire population of the country. Instead, individuals running for office have to introduce themselves to voters some other way. Television advertisements, sponsored posts on social media, and robocalls are …

Prevention And Protection Interventions For Stateless Non-Refugee And Force Displaced Children, Tanya Herring Nov 2019

Prevention And Protection Interventions For Stateless Non-Refugee And Force Displaced Children, Tanya Herring

New England Journal of Public Policy

This article advances a general theory of law and justice that would expand the Palermo Trafficking and Smuggling Protocols to a wider application in human rights jurisprudence. The aim of the research reported here is to close the gaps in member-state policy and scholarship that addresses prevention measures and protection mechanisms for forcibly displaced children seeking self-determination in states that have not ratified the UN Convention on Refugees and the UN Conventions on Statelessness. The research is based on the premise that a stateless nonrefugee status constructs an extremely vulnerable state for children during forced migration and when they are …

3d Mesh Editing Method For Virtual Double Eyelid Surgery, Guan Tong, Juntao Ye, Guanghui Ma, Xiaopeng Zhang Nov 2019

3d Mesh Editing Method For Virtual Double Eyelid Surgery, Guan Tong, Juntao Ye, Guanghui Ma, Xiaopeng Zhang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: A virtual cosmetic surgery system involves lots of human-computer interactions, and the achieved effects rely on the skills of the operator. Virtual double-fold eyelid surgery is a function that is either missing or implemented with less accuracy in commercial software. To solve these problems, we propose an algorithm that can automatically generate virtual double-fold eyelid path taking advantage of geodesic line. In terms of algorithms, this method adopts a self-adaptive subdivision strategy to avoid losing shapes of the deformation outcomes. Results of experiments show stability, high efficiency and usability of our method.

When The Injured Nurse Returns To Work: An Institutional Ethnography, Laurie Clune Nov 2019

When The Injured Nurse Returns To Work: An Institutional Ethnography, Laurie Clune

Dissertations

Nursing is a high risk profession for injury. A Canadian survey reports many nurses are in poor physical and emotional health; they sustain more musculoskeletal and violence related injuries than other occupational groups. In Ontario, an injury management approach called Early Return to Work (RTW) requires injured workers, including nurses, to go back to work before full recovery. The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board cite this approach as beneficial to both the employer and employee. This study uses an institutional ethnographic approach to examine critically the RTW process from the standpoint of injured registered nurses. Through interviews and mapping activities …

Self-Determination And Psychological Adaptation In Forcibly Displaced People, Numan Turan, Bediha İpekçi, Mehmet Yalçın Yılmaz Nov 2019

Self-Determination And Psychological Adaptation In Forcibly Displaced People, Numan Turan, Bediha İpekçi, Mehmet Yalçın Yılmaz

New England Journal of Public Policy

According to the UN Refugee Agency, as of 2018 approximately 70 million people were forcibly displaced because of intrastate and interstate conflicts. A majority of those people endured significant hardships, and a consensus is growing among researchers that forcibly displaced people have gone through potentially traumatic experiences that challenge their well-being and health. Consequently, a large amount of research focuses on their mental health concerns, whereas research focusing on their will to normalize their lives and grow after a traumatic migration is scarce. In this article, we highlight the efforts by forcibly displaced people to normalize their lives, pointing out …

Communicative Justice And Reconciliation In Canada, Alice Neeson Nov 2019

Communicative Justice And Reconciliation In Canada, Alice Neeson

New England Journal of Public Policy

Communicative justice co-exists with other dimensions of justice and emphasizes the importance of fair communicative practices, particularly after periods of direct or structural violence. While intercultural dialogue is often assumed to be a positive, or even necessary, part of reconciliation processes, there are questions to be asked about the ethicality of dialogue when one voice has been silenced, misrepresented, and ignored for decades. This article draws on twelve months of ethnographic research with reconciliation activists and organizations in Canada and considers the potential for communicative flows to help compensate for structural inequalities during processes of reconciliation.

Raising Indigenous Women’S Voices For Equal Rights And Self-Determination, Grazia Redolfi, Nikoletta Pikramenou, Rosario Grimà Algora Nov 2019

Raising Indigenous Women’S Voices For Equal Rights And Self-Determination, Grazia Redolfi, Nikoletta Pikramenou, Rosario Grimà Algora

New England Journal of Public Policy

The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples states that the right to self-determination for Indigenous peoples involves their having the right to freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social, and cultural development. The implementation of this right is linked to the ability and freedom to participate in any decision making that relates to their development. Current laws and practices are considered “unfair to women,” because they sustain traditional and customary patriarchal attitudes that marginalize Indigenous women and exclude them from decision-making tables and leadership roles. Despite the many challenges Indigenous women face in …
