Pancreatic Islets Communicate With The Brain Via Vagal Sensory Neurons, Madina Makhmutova
Pancreatic Islets Communicate With The Brain Via Vagal Sensory Neurons, Madina Makhmutova
Open Access Dissertations
Sensory denervation affects pancreatic islet function, glucose metabolism and diabetes onset, but how islet endocrine cells interact with sensory neurons has not been studied. In this thesis work we attempted to anatomically and physiologically characterize vagal islet-brain pathway in search of the sensory modality that islet is transmitting to the brain. Here we show that the pancreatic islets are innervated by vagal sensory axons expressing substance P, calcitonin-gene related peptide, and serotonin receptor 5HT3R. Vagal neurons projecting to the pancreas terminate in the commissural nucleus of the solitary tract. These neurons respond to chemical but not mechanical stimulation of the …

Cardiac Dysfunction In Patients With Community-Acquired Pneumonia, Ehab Elmelegy, El-Saied Shaheen, Wael Hossam El Din
Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research
Background Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is still an important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide especially in the elderly. Evidence shows a high correlation between acute respiratory infections and increased risk of cardiovascular events (CVEs). The occurrence of CVE in hospitalized patients with CAP may significantly affect the clinical status, and a severe CVE could be the primary cause of clinical failure. Aim To study the incidence of cardiac complications in patients with CAP. Patients and methods This clinical study was carried out on 120 patients (63 males and 57 females) hospitalized with a primary diagnosis of CAP. Patients with the …

Mia-Sig: Multiplex Chromatin Interaction Analysis By Signal Processing And Statistical Algorithms., Minji Kim, Meizhen Zheng, Simon Zhongyuan Tian, Byoungkoo Lee, Jeffrey Chuang, Yijun Ruan
Faculty Research 2019
The single-molecule multiplex chromatin interaction data are generated by emerging 3D genome mapping technologies such as GAM, SPRITE, and ChIA-Drop. These datasets provide insights into high-dimensional chromatin organization, yet introduce new computational challenges. Thus, we developed MIA-Sig, an algorithmic solution based on signal processing and information theory. We demonstrate its ability to de-noise the multiplex data, assess the statistical significance of chromatin complexes, and identify topological domains and frequent inter-domain contacts. On chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP)-enriched data, MIA-Sig can clearly distinguish the protein-associated interactions from the non-specific topological domains. Together, MIA-Sig represents a novel algorithmic framework for multiplex chromatin interaction analysis.

Efficacy Of The Abcde Bundle In Reducing Delirium In Critically Ill Patients: An Integrative Literature Review, Leah Hanson
Efficacy Of The Abcde Bundle In Reducing Delirium In Critically Ill Patients: An Integrative Literature Review, Leah Hanson
Nursing Masters Papers
Delirium is an acute dysfunction of the brain that occurs in up to eighty percent of critically ill patients which has been associated with increased morbidity, mortality and long-term cognitive deficits. In an effort to reduce symptoms associated with Intensive Care Unit (ICU) acquired delirium, leading critical care researchers created the Awakening and Breathing Coordination, Delirium Monitoring/Management and Early mobility (ABCDE) bundle (Balas et al, 2012). Through an integrative literature review, the aim of this scholarly inquiry paper is to determine the efficacy of the ABCDE bundle in reducing the incidence of delirium in critically ill patients and provide supporting …

Public Land & Resources Law Review
The Supreme Court of the United States recently ruled that the Atomic Energy Act did not preempt a Virginia law prohibiting uranium mining in the Commonwealth. The Court held that although the Act delegated substantial power over the nuclear life cycle to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, it offered no indication that Congress sought to strip states of their traditional power to regulate mining on private lands within their borders.

Improving Medication Information Presentation Through Interactive Visualization In Mobile Apps: Human Factors Design, Don Roosan, Yan Li, Anandi Law, Huy Truong, Mazharul Karim, Jay Chok, Moom Roosan
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Background: Despite the detailed patient package inserts (PPIs) with prescription drugs that communicate crucial information about safety, there is a critical gap between patient understanding and the knowledge presented. As a result, patients may suffer from adverse events. We propose using human factors design methodologies such as hierarchical task analysis (HTA) and interactive visualization to bridge this gap. We hypothesize that an innovative mobile app employing human factors design with an interactive visualization can deliver PPI information aligned with patients’ information processing heuristics. Such an app may help patients gain an improved overall knowledge of medications.

Rare Presentation Of Typhoid Fever In An Immunocompetent Patient, Kumar Priyanka, Rajnish Kumar
Rare Presentation Of Typhoid Fever In An Immunocompetent Patient, Kumar Priyanka, Rajnish Kumar
Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research
Typhoid fever, caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi, is the most common cause of enteric fever, and presents classically with fever and other gastrointestinal symptoms. We report an interesting case of a 27-year-old Indian man who lives in a semiurban area of Haryana (northern India) and presented with a 3-day-long history of intermittent fever, chills, and rigor. He was misdiagnosed previously as having mumps fever in view of the clinical presentation, but later, with proper workup, it was found to be an atypical presentation of typhoid fever. He responded well to intravenous antibiotics and recovered completely from typhoid infection.

Relationship Between Dietary Intake And Obesity Among A Group Of Primary School‑Aged Children In Cairo Governorate, Mahmood D. Al‑Mendalawi
Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research
Sir,
I read with interest the study by El‑Gazzar et al. [1] published in January–March 2019 issue of the Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research. Based on using WHO growth standard to measure various anthropometric indices as well as dietary assessment (24 h recall) and food consumption pattern, the authors studied the relationship between dietary pattern and obesity among a cohort of Egyptian primary school children. They found a positive correlation between obesity and the increased intake of high‑energy dense food (fat and sugar) in the studied cohort. Owing to the presence of the following methodological limitation, I presume that …

Endoscopic Band Ligation Versus Argon Plasma Coagulation In Management Of Bleeding From Gastric Antral Vascular Ectasia In Patients With Portal Hypertension, Hala M. Abd El Maguid, Muhammad M. Abdel Ghaffar
Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research
Background Gastric antral vascular ectasia (GAVE) may cause recurrent hemorrhage, and thus, chronic anemia, in patients with portal hypertension. Treatment with argon plasma coagulation (APC) is an effective and safe method in adults but requires multiple sessions of endoscopic therapy. Endoscopic band ligation (EBL) was found to be a good alternative for APC as a treatment for GAVE, especially in refractory cases. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of EBL, as compared with APC, in treating nonvariceal upper GI bleeding GAVE in patients with portal hypertension. Patients and methods A total of 40 …

Development Of Spirituality During Addiction Recovery: An Explanatory Case Study, Tige Culbertson
Development Of Spirituality During Addiction Recovery: An Explanatory Case Study, Tige Culbertson
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
Individuals who are in recovery from addiction can find spiritual development to be helpful in their pursuit of sobriety. Some individuals have developed spirituality through a transition from negative religious coping (NRC) to positive religious coping (PRC). Prior to this study, no other researchers had focused on the factors that contribute to this transition from NRC to PRC. A qualitative methodology and explanatory case study research design was used to identify the factors that contributed to a transition from NRC to PRC during addiction recovery. Participants included five individuals who were in recovery from addiction and had experienced a transition …
