Combined Modality Therapies For High-Risk Prostate Cancer: Narrative Review Of Current Understanding And New Directions., Benjamin A. Greenberger, Victor E. Chen, Robert B. Den

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

Despite the many prospective randomized trials that have been available in the past decade regarding the optimization of radiation, hormonal, and surgical therapies for high-risk prostate cancer (PCa), many questions remain. There is currently a lack of level I evidence regarding the relative efficacy of radical prostatectomy (RP) followed by adjuvant radiation compared to radiation therapy (RT) combined with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for high-risk PCa. Current retrospective series have also described an improvement in biochemical outcomes and PCa-specific mortality through the use of augmented radiation strategies incorporating brachytherapy. The relative efficacy of modern augmented RT compared to RP is …

Testing An Active Intervention To Deter Researchers' Use Of Questionable Research Practices, Samuel V. Bruton, M. Brown, Donald Sacco, R. Didlake Nov 2019

Testing An Active Intervention To Deter Researchers' Use Of Questionable Research Practices, Samuel V. Bruton, M. Brown, Donald Sacco, R. Didlake

Faculty Publications

Introduction: In this study, we tested a simple, active “ethical consistency” intervention aimed at reducing researchers’ endorsement of questionable research practices (QRPs).

Methods: We developed a simple, active ethical consistency intervention and tested it against a control using an established QRP survey instrument. Before responding to a survey that asked about attitudes towards each of fifteen QRPs, participants were randomly assigned to either a consistency or control 3–5-min writing task. A total of 201 participants completed the survey: 121 participants were recruited from a database of currently funded NSF/NIH scientists, and 80 participants were recruited from a pool …

Panahon And Bagay: Metonymy And The Close Reading Of Dictionaries To Understand Filipino Temporality, Christian Jil Benitez Nov 2019

Panahon And Bagay: Metonymy And The Close Reading Of Dictionaries To Understand Filipino Temporality, Christian Jil Benitez

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thisarticle demonstrates how the close reading of words used in lexicographic definitions of the word panahon point to a Filipino understanding of temporality. These definitions resort to metonymy to concretize the abstract. Although different meanings cloud its meaning, panahon is understandable in a given instance when it refers coincidentally to something else. Etymologically, panahon is related to nahon and taon, which embody the opportune and the material, suggesting that panahon is articulable through the encounter of things (bagay), whose thinghood/appropriateness is knowable only by chance (pagkakataon). Kasaysayan (history) is a bagay that is always implicated in the panahon it attemptsto …

Exploration Of The Behavioral, Electrophysiological, And Psychometric Effects Of Kth Speech-Tracking Training In Noise In Normal Hearing Adults, Michael Kurth Nov 2019

Exploration Of The Behavioral, Electrophysiological, And Psychometric Effects Of Kth Speech-Tracking Training In Noise In Normal Hearing Adults, Michael Kurth

Doctoral Dissertations

Looking at hearing loss through the WHO-ICD model for disability reveals that auditory interventions do not necessarily address all of the components of auditory disability. Auditory training has been proposed as a solution to address activity-level deficits. The purpose of this study was to examine structure- and activity-level changes as the result of auditory training for normal hearing individuals training in the presence of noise. Thirty adults with normal hearing were placed into three experimental groups: A group engaging in active auditory training in noise, a group listening to speech material in noise, and a control group that performed no …

Reconciling Contemporary Approaches To School Attendance And School Absenteeism: Toward Promotion And Nimble Response, Global Policy Review And Implementation, And Future Adaptability (Part 2), Christopher Kearney, Carolina Gonzálvez, Patricia A. Graczyk, Mirae Fornander

Psychology Faculty Research

As noted in Part 1 of this two-part review, school attendance is an important foundational competency for children and adolescents, and school absenteeism has been linked to myriad short- and long-term negative consequences, even into adulthood. Categorical and dimensional approaches for this population have been developed. This article (Part 2 of a two-part review) discusses compatibilities of categorical and dimensional approaches for school attendance and school absenteeism and how these approaches can inform one another. The article also poses a multidimensional multi-tiered system of supports pyramid model as a mechanism for reconciling these approaches, promoting school attendance (and/or prevention of …

New techniques have recently been developed and applied to capture reactive nitrogen species, including nitrogen oxides (NOx=NO+NO2), nitrous acid (HONO), nitric acid (HNO3), and particulate nitrate (pNO−3), for accurate measurement of their isotopic composition. Here, we report – for the first time – the isotopic composition of HONO from biomass burning (BB) emissions collected during the Fire Influence on Regional to Global Environments Experiment (FIREX, later evolved into FIREX-AQ) at the Missoula Fire Science Laboratory in the fall of 2016. We used our newly developed annular denuder system (ADS), which was verified to completely capture HONO associated with BB in …

Negotiating Land In The Spanish Philippines: Cases Of Land Donations And Boundary Disputes In Laguna, Seventeenth And Eighteenth Centuries, Grace Liza Concepcion Nov 2019

Negotiating Land In The Spanish Philippines: Cases Of Land Donations And Boundary Disputes In Laguna, Seventeenth And Eighteenth Centuries, Grace Liza Concepcion

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Using archival documents, thisarticle analyzes two types of negotiations involving land in Laguna province. The first deals with donations that native leaders made to the Franciscans for the establishment of a hospital in Los Baños in the early 1600s. The second type consists of native claims to land in a dispute on town borders in the eighteenth century. These cases evince alternative ideas of land ownership and depict how the people negotiated the colonial structure to prove their tenure. They also illustrate overlapping practices of land tenure during the transition from precolonial to colonial forms.KEYWORDS: PRECOLONIAL LAND PRACTICES • SPANISH …

Employment And Quality Of Life In Adults Who Are Deaf, Sara Thompson, Susan R. Easterbrooks Nov 2019

Employment And Quality Of Life In Adults Who Are Deaf, Sara Thompson, Susan R. Easterbrooks

JADARA

Research shows that work is closely related to self-esteem (Walter, 1993). Yet many young people who are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH) are choosing not to work. How does this affect their self-esteem and overall quality of life? Quality of life (QoL) is the satisfaction one feels about his current situation. Using the Comprehensive Quality of Life Scale-Adult (ComQol-A5) (Cummins, 1997), the perceived QoL of eleven pairs of matched participants(N=22) from a State School for the Deaf was measured. Data were used to analyze the impact that employment had upon their perceived QoL. The results indicated no significant differences …

Deaf And Hearing: Conducting Cross-Cultural Research In A Postsecondary Setting, Steven R. Sligar Nov 2019

Deaf And Hearing: Conducting Cross-Cultural Research In A Postsecondary Setting, Steven R. Sligar

JADARA

This paper describes cross-cultural research methods that were used in a case study of a community college in the Midwest. During the course of the research, the importance of applying cross-cultural research methods became apparent. Analysis of the research process resulted in a identification of three aspects of cross-cultural design. These are the cross cultural research guidelines applied to Deafness, the context of the study, and the conduct of the research. The results indicated that when the interests of people who were Deaf were considered, cross-cultural collaboration was possible, there was benefit to the Deaf culture and the mainstream, and …

The Value Of Art Therapy: An Intervention To Enhance Emotional Health Of Children With Hearing Loss, Helen Boyle, Peggy Dunn Snow Nov 2019

The Value Of Art Therapy: An Intervention To Enhance Emotional Health Of Children With Hearing Loss, Helen Boyle, Peggy Dunn Snow

JADARA

Deafness is the invisible, unseen sensory anomaly that is difficult for hearing individuals to understand. Deaf and hard of hearing children look the same as other children and have the same cognitive abilities as hearing children; they ambulate, laugh, cry, and have the same basic needs. Research data supports the fact that when intelligence instruments are used that do not rely on verbal and language processing abilities the results show that there is no difference in performance between hearing and hearing impaired children (Moores 2001; Vemon 1990). There is the same range of intelligence for both groups. However there is …

Theories on cognitive dissonance and stereotyping will be examined in relation to their possible implications in the working relationship, and included in this review if they related to the development and maintenance of an ongoing working relationship between the deaf professional and the interpreter. The concept, cognitive dissonance, will be introduced in this discussion and examined for its relevance to the inconsistency …

Language Disfluency And Diagnosis In The Deaf Inpatient Population, Neil S. Glickman Nov 2019

Language Disfluency And Diagnosis In The Deaf Inpatient Population, Neil S. Glickman

JADARA

This study was designed to investigate the relationship between language dysfluency in the deaf inpatient population and the following variables: psychiatric diagnosis, risk of harm to self and others and psycho-social functioning admission scores on the Clinical Evaluation of Risk and Functioning Scale - Revised(CERF-R), and cognitive ability as measured by the Allen Cognitive Level Scale(ACL).

The research found that 75% of deaf individuals fell into the non-fluent range of communication in ASL, their best language. Participants with severe language dysfluency received DSM-IV diagnoses concentrated in more severe forms of psychopathology, while individuals with fluent language skills received a broader …
