The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

This study investigated the ability of clove oil and eugenol to inhibit biofilm production and eradicate canine Malassezia pachydermatisin biofilm form. Biofilm formation was studied using a crystal violet assay and was quantified by optical density (OD)at 595 nm. Killing time was assessed by time-kill assay. All 17 isolates of canine M.pachydermatiswere capable of biofilm formation, however, 6 isolates formed more extensive biofilms than the other isolates and were selected for susceptibility testing. Clove essential oil and eugenol showed effectiveness against both planktonic and biofilm cells with identical minimum planktonic inhibitory concentration (MPIC50) and minimum planktonic fungicidal concentration (MPFC50), 0.156 and …

Controlling Strain Energy Density In 3d Cellular Collagen Constructs During Complex Loads, Katherine Hollar Dec 2019

Controlling Strain Energy Density In 3d Cellular Collagen Constructs During Complex Loads, Katherine Hollar

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Mechanical stimulation applied to damaged soft tissues, such as ligament, can promote tissue remodeling to accelerate healing. To help identify treatments that encourage ligament healing, bioreactors have been designed to subject 3D cellularized constructs to various loading conditions in order to determine the mechanical mechanisms that trigger cell-mediated repair. An innovative approach is to use a bioreactor to apply controlled states of biaxial stress to study the effects of strain energy density and distortion energy on cell activity. Tissue distortion has been linked to changes in the structure and function of ligament, yet the specific impact of distortion energy on …

Pharmacist Perceptions Toward Screening, Brief Intervention, And Referral To Treatment For Prescription Opioid Misuse: Initial Instrument Reliability And Validity, Tara Fouts

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Prescription opioid misuse has become a growing problem in the United States, and there has been a significant increase in the number of nonfatal overdose and overdose deaths since the 1990s. Idaho has also experienced an increase in the number of drug-induced deaths over time, increasing nearly 30% from 2012 to 2016. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates overprescribing and dispensing of prescription opioids is a main driver to the increase in overdoses. Evidence-based early intervention methods, such as screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT), can be utilized in health care settings to identify risky behaviors …

Isolated Nucleus Stiffens In Response To Low Intensity Vibration, Joshua Newberg Dec 2019

Isolated Nucleus Stiffens In Response To Low Intensity Vibration, Joshua Newberg

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The nucleus, central to all cellular activity, relies on both direct mechanical input and its molecular transducers to sense and respond to external mechanical stimuli. This response occurs by regulating intra-nuclear organization that ultimately determines gene expression to control cell function and fate. It has long been known that signals propagate from an extracellular environment to the cytoskeleton and into nucleus (outside-in signaling) to regulate cell behavior. Emerging evidence, however, shows that both the cytoskeleton and the nucleus have inherent abilities to sense and adapt to mechanical force, independent of each other. While it has been shown that isolated nuclei …

Acute Exposure To Tcdd Increases Liver Disease Progression In Mice With Carbon Tetrachloride-Induced Liver Injury, Giovan N. Cholico Dec 2019

Acute Exposure To Tcdd Increases Liver Disease Progression In Mice With Carbon Tetrachloride-Induced Liver Injury, Giovan N. Cholico

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Liver disease is a worldwide problem and the 9th leading cause of death in the United States. Common causes of liver disease include alcohol abuse, virus infection, and nonalcoholic fatty liver. Regardless of etiology, liver damage elicits inflammation and drives the activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), which deposit collagen throughout the liver. During chronic injury, excessive collagen deposition, referred to as fibrosis or “scarring”, can progress to cirrhosis, cancer, and organ failure. Emerging evidence indicates a strong association between liver disease and exposure to environmental chemicals. This research investigated mechanisms by which exposure to the environmental contaminant 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo- …

Mentor’S Perspective: Impact Of Working In A Professional Development Partnership, Kimberly Tucker Dec 2019

Mentor’S Perspective: Impact Of Working In A Professional Development Partnership, Kimberly Tucker

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this single case study was to explore a Physical Education (PE) mentor teacher’s perception of working with a Professional Development Partnership (PDP) for over 17 years. The researcher coined the new term PDP, which deviates from a Professional Development School in that a PDP is not a school-wide endeavor. A PDP can be a model used for a teacher education program for subject areas where there are limited, or only one, teacher at the given school, as seen in PE.In particular, this study examined how a PDP influenced a mentor teacher’s professional development and the ways in …

There Is Nothing So Practical As Good Theory For Tracking Destination Image Over Time, Steven Pike, H. S. Jin, Filareti Kotsi

All Works

Destination image has consistently been a popular theme in the tourism literature. This is due to the important role the construct can play in the intangible nature of consumers' travel decisions. However, one temporal aspect, of how destination image might change over time, has attracted little academic research attention. This manuscript attempts to make a contribution to this gap in the literature by reporting key findings from an investigation into perceptions held of one of New Zealand's most popular resort destinations, Rotorua, at three points in time over two decades. The research is narrowly focused on the perceptions of consumers …

‘Overreaching’ Or ‘Overreacting’? Reflections On The Judicial Function And Approaches Of Wto Appellate Body, Weihuan Zhou, Henry S. Gao

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Since 2017, the US has blocked appointments to the WTO Appellate Body (AB), citing various concerns over its judicial approach, with the most significant being the issue of judicial overreach. This article provides a critical analysis of this issue and makes important contributions to the ongoing debate. Drawing on the fundamental function of the WTO, it offers a fresh approach to assess judicial overreach and shows that AB rulings in major non-trade remedy cases (that have consistently concerned the US) have served that function and hence should not be treated as ‘overreaching’. We argue that, the allegation of judicial overreach, …
