The Truth About Crisis Pregnancy Centers, Cassandra Griffin

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

This research aims to explore the practices and impacts of Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs) in the United States. CPCs are centers whose primary purpose is to dissuade pregnant people from obtaining an abortion. Oftentimes they will provide services free of cost, such as ultrasounds and pregnancy tests. Their main feature is the counseling they provide against seeking abortion services. This paper explores the national affiliates of CPCs in the United States, their practices and advertising, misinformation spread by CPCs, their sources of funding and lobbying activities, and the political implications of their efforts.

Evaluation Of Fire-Affected Concrete Structures By Non-Destructive Testing Methods, Upal Mohammad Towfiqul Quadir Dec 2019

Evaluation Of Fire-Affected Concrete Structures By Non-Destructive Testing Methods, Upal Mohammad Towfiqul Quadir

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Fire hazard on concrete structures has been a significant concern around the world. After a fire hazard, the crucial part is the evaluation of the fire-affected concrete for strengthening or demolition. For evaluation of a fire-affected concrete structure, Non-destructive Testing (NDT) methods would certainly be a more viable option than the destructive testing methods. Until now, no specific code was developed for quantifiable evaluation of fire-affected concrete with NDT. To develop the method for Non-destructive Evaluation (NDE) of fire-affected concrete, 8 small-sized (4 in x 4 in x 15 in) and 32 medium-sized (8 in x 8 in x 36 …

Essays On China's Cigarette Industry, Xi Bai Dec 2019

Essays On China's Cigarette Industry, Xi Bai

All Dissertations

This dissertation comprises three chapters on the Chinese cigarettes industry. The China State Tobacco Monopoly Administration (STMA) regulates this industry, allocating quotas of production across manufacturers. Between 2006 and 2007, it mandated all cigarette firms within a province merge into a single state-owned, province-level firm. After the merger, the province-level firms allocate their quotas for the maximum number of cartons they can produce directly.

In the first chapter, I examine how the mandated change in market structure resulting from the STMA affected allocation on the quality dimension. To assess the pre-merger differences in market structure in quota allocation, I compare …

Flowers Or Flora?: Understanding The Effects Of Probiotics On Depression, Nicole Collopy Dec 2019

Flowers Or Flora?: Understanding The Effects Of Probiotics On Depression, Nicole Collopy

Senior Theses

The human gut is populated with hundreds of types of bacteria and fungi. In North America, both intestinal and mood disorders are prevalent, presenting health problems that challenge health care professionals and patients alike. A scholarly literature review was conducted to explore this important relationship.

The investigation of the literature revealed that there is an association between gut health disorders and mood disorders, mainly anxiety and depression. This is due to bi-directionality between the brain-gut pathways, meaning that gastrointestinal health may have an effect on mental health and vice versa.

This connection between gut and mood can have substantial implications …

Land Groups, Land Registration, And Economic Development Projects On Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, Tarcisius Kabutaulaka Dec 2019

Land Groups, Land Registration, And Economic Development Projects On Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, Tarcisius Kabutaulaka

Pacific Studies

Neoliberal economic development requires that land boundaries and land groups be identified and registered, creating property rights and titles that can be bought, sold, and transferred. Registration makes land and land groups legible, thereby allowing states to exercise control and make land accessible to potential investors. This process of commodification creates changes that are often socially traumatic. In many Melanesian societies, individual and group rights to land are traditionally fluid and dynamic. Registration, however, freezes them. This paper examines how the process of land registration not only identify but also create land groups and influences how they respond to economic …

Transnational Journeys: Samoan Migration And Remittances Reconsidered, Paul Shankman Dec 2019

Transnational Journeys: Samoan Migration And Remittances Reconsidered, Paul Shankman

Pacific Studies

In her work on Samoan population movement, Sa‘iliemanu Lilomaiava-Doktor criticizes earlier approaches to migration and remittances as “wrongheaded” because they were based on an “economistic” Euro-American model that did not sufficiently include indigenous perspectives. She then offers an approach that focuses on Samoan conceptions of movement, obligation, and connection. This article addresses her critique and examines the role of indigenous concepts in understanding and explaining trends in Samoan migration and remittances over the past several decades. As important as indigenous perspectives are, a number of the trends that Lilomaiava-Doktor derives from her approach are problematic. Furthermore, a review of the …
