The Fundamental Right To Technology, Haochen Sun
The Fundamental Right To Technology, Haochen Sun
Hofstra Law Review
Waves of technological progress in recent decades have tremendously improved quality of life. Meanwhile, concerns about technology-driven injustices, such as unfair distribution of wealth and racial discrimination, have deepened. Experts have cautioned that new technologies could have potentially devastating effects, claiming for instance that artificial intelligence may lead to World War III. We are at a crossroads, and how we harness technology now will determine the future of humanity.
This Article presents a thought experiment, proposing that a new fundamental right to technology be recognized under the U.S. Constitution. Given that technology is of fundamental importance to human dignity and …

Change In Relationship Satisfaction Among Veterans In Couple Therapy, Grace Boyers Mckee
Change In Relationship Satisfaction Among Veterans In Couple Therapy, Grace Boyers Mckee
Psychology Theses and Dissertations
Approximately two-thirds of Americans will live with a romantic partner at some point in their lives, and 75% of individuals marry by age 30. Unfortunately, relationship dissatisfaction is a common occurrence, with as many as one-third of couples reporting relationship distress. Although many forms of couple therapy are effective for improving relationship satisfaction and reduces the risk of divorce among distressed couples, no one form of couple therapy has clearly been established as superior. Moreover, relatively little is known about how and why couple therapy has its effects. Improved understanding of what change may occur, as well as common trajectories …

Makara Journal of Health Research
Background: Unmet need for family planning in Myanmar (estimated 15.8% by the UN in 2017) is relatively high compared to other South East Asia countries. Moreover, Social Institutions and Gender Index in Myanmar is very high and cultural norms promote childbearing. Thus, this paper was conducted to examine role of intra-household gendered dominance (IHGD) in unmet need for family planning across Myanmar to set more effective intervention for family planning. Methods: The study utilized secondary data from 2015–2016 MDHS. Total 7,652 married women in reproductive age (MWRA) were included and 16% of them had unmet need for family …
Baby Girl Z : A Novel, Kathryn Bradley
Baby Girl Z : A Novel, Kathryn Bradley
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The novel Baby Girl Z examines the worlds of fertility treatment, neonatal intensive care, and early motherhood. The critical introduction highlights the connections between Baby Girl Z and contemporary fiction, autofiction, and memoirs about motherhood while exploring how the traditional tools of literary analysis and creative writing, when paired with feminist rhetorical analysis, promote a new reading of these texts as the literature of lived, traumatic experience. The theoretical underpinnings of the novel can be found in works that explore the intersections of the fields of creative writing, feminist rhetorics and maternal theory, such as Leigh Gilmore’s Autobiographics. The novel’s …

Addressing Barriers To Maternal Healthcare For Marshallese Islanders In Northwest Arkansas: An Internship Experience, Victoria Richardson
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses
The Marshallese community is a rapidly growing population in Northwest Arkansas. Approximately 12,000 people migrated from the Marshall Islands and settled in the state of Arkansas due to the signing of the Compact of Free Association (COFA) in 1986. Although the population in Northwest Arkansas is experiencing rapid growth, there are significant health disparities that coincide with it. Due to vast cultural differences, language barriers, low economic status, and political barriers, the Marshallese community suffers from prenatal health inequalities and poor maternal and fetal outcomes, including low birth-weight infants, premature births, and increased infant mortality. During my internship, I provided …

Emergent Regulatory Systems And Their Challenges: The Case Of Combination Medical Products, George Horvath
Emergent Regulatory Systems And Their Challenges: The Case Of Combination Medical Products, George Horvath
Washington Law Review
Where regulatory systems overlap, courts and scholars often focus on the undesirable aspects of the overlap—the ways in which systems conflict. One such context involves the regulation of prescription drugs and medical devices by the FDA’s premarket evaluation processes and by state common-law tort and products liability actions. FDA regulation and state common law are often described as separate, conflicting regulatory systems. This Article challenges that description by proposing a model in which FDA premarket evaluation and state common law function as a single regulatory system. This model brings order to the Supreme Court’s seemingly inconsistent medical products preemption cases, …

Tectonic Setting And Timing Of Deformation In The Big Thompson Canyon, Northern Colorado Front Range, Simone Muller
Tectonic Setting And Timing Of Deformation In The Big Thompson Canyon, Northern Colorado Front Range, Simone Muller
Master's Theses
The 1.8-1.6 Ga rocks of the western United States were formed through accretionary tectonics either by collision of juvenile island-arcs or by cycles of extension-accretion. For the juvenile island-arc model, basins between the arcs are expected to be older than the arcs and long periods of time (>10-20 Myr) may exist between basin formation, arc formation, and the deformation caused by their accretion. In contrast, the extension-accretion model predicts sedimentation within extensional basins must be younger than the earliest arcs and may be deformed by accretion shortly (~10-20 Myr) after formation. The Big Thompson Canyon area, between Loveland and …

Alternative Conceptions, Initial Knowledge, And Self-Efficacy Of The Novice And Expert Geologist Regarding Mineral Identification, Amanda Manzanares
Alternative Conceptions, Initial Knowledge, And Self-Efficacy Of The Novice And Expert Geologist Regarding Mineral Identification, Amanda Manzanares
Master's Theses
Research shows the novice geologist begins an introductory geology course with alternative conceptions about minerals and other geoscience concepts. Students use their prior understanding of these concepts as the basis for future learning. If students’ frameworks include alternative conceptions about foundational geoscience concepts, these could hinder their ability to learn more factual and complicated ideas and facts in the future. It takes time to change these alternative conceptions. For this reason, instructors need to understand their students’ prior understandings of geoscience concepts at the beginning of the courses to move students to a better understanding of the material. Moreover, the …

Addressing Health Literacy Needs Of The Older Adult Focused On Improving Medication Adherence: An Online Education Program For Nurse Practitioners, Angela D. Pickerel
Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones
As healthcare providers, nurse practitioners are tasked with assuring patients have a clear understanding of their medical health, know how to navigate the healthcare system, and recognize the need to develop self-care skills. Several populations are known to be at risk for the effects of inadequate health literacy; however, the older adult population is at greater risk because of increased burdens related to negative effects of aging on cognitive skills and increased prevalence of chronic disease requiring complex medication regimens. Inadequate health literacy has been linked to increased risk of hospitalizations, emergency room visits, adverse drug reactions and interaction, and …

Screening For Melanoma For At-Risk Population: A Practice Guide, Sapana Shakya
Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones
Melanoma is a lethal skin cancer that kills one American every hour (American Academy of Dermatology, 2018b). The incidence and prevalence rate of melanoma is on the rise and continues to affect people, increasing the mortality and morbidity rate and financial burden of the disease. In 2016, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force concluded that there was insufficient evidence to assess the balance of benefits and harms of visual skin examination by a clinician to screen for skin cancer in adults. However, this recommendation was only applicable to the patients who were asymptomatic. The routine skin cancer screening has shown …

Oral Health During Pregnancy: Promoting Awareness Of Guidelines And Education Resources In The Evaluation Of Self-Perceived Efficacy To Educate, Screen, And Refer Women During Pregnancy For The Nurse Practitioner Student, Leah Salmans
Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones
Historically, oral health (OH) care has been largely misunderstood and excluded from the realm of primary care. However, this exclusion is at odds with the fact that oral health can and does have an impact on individuals’ general health and well-being. Oral disease is considered one of the most widespread chronic diseases, despite being highly preventable. For women, pregnancy can set the stage for oral disease development or exacerbation due to multiple factors. Poor maternal oral health has been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, contributing to early dental caries development in their children, and detrimental effects over her lifespan. To …

Sleep Stage Prediction With Raw Acceleration And Photoplethysmography Heart Rate Data Derived From A Consumer Wearable Device, Olivia Walch, Yitong Huang, Daniel Forger, Cathy Goldstein
Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications
Wearable, multisensor, consumer devices that estimate sleep are now commonplace, but the algorithms used by these devices to score sleep are not open source, and the raw sensor data is rarely accessible for external use. As a result, these devices are limited in their usefulness for clinical and research applications, despite holding much promise. We used a mobile application of our own creation to collect raw acceleration data and heart rate from the Apple Watch worn by participants undergoing polysomnography, as well as during the ambulatory period preceding in lab testing. Using this data, we compared the contributions of multiple …
