Individual Differences In Executive Function And Reappraisal: A Latent-Variable Analysis, Wei Xing Toh
Individual Differences In Executive Function And Reappraisal: A Latent-Variable Analysis, Wei Xing Toh
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Cognitive reappraisal is an adaptive emotion regulation strategy that positively impacts various facets of adaptive functioning (e.g., interpersonal relations, subjective well-being). Although reappraisal implicates cognitive processing, a clear consensus concerning the cognitive underpinnings of reappraisal has not yet been reached. Therefore, we examined how executive function (EF)—i.e., three general-purpose control abilities comprising working memory, inhibition, and shifting—are associated with performance-based reappraisal ability and self-reported reappraisal frequency. Using a latent-variable approach, we found that the shared variance among EF tasks (i.e., common EF)—a general goal-management ability that facilitates the active maintenance of task goals—significantly predicted reappraisal ability, but not reappraisal frequency. …

Characterization Of The Dimerization Domains On The Mannose-6-Phosphate/Insulin-Like Growth Factor Ii Receptor, Tyler Degener
Characterization Of The Dimerization Domains On The Mannose-6-Phosphate/Insulin-Like Growth Factor Ii Receptor, Tyler Degener
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
The mannose-6-phosphate/insulin-like growth factor II (M6P/IGF2) receptor is a transmembrane protein known to sequester growth factors from the extracellular matrix. This behavior suggests a mechanism of tumor suppression. Structurally, the receptor’s extracellular region is segmented into 15 homologous repeats, which are divided further into 5 triplet domains, labelled 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12, and 13-15. What is notable about the triplets is their propensity to form dimers with triplets on a second M6P/IGF2 receptor. In fact, previous studies indicate that this protein functions optimally when dimerized. Thus, the purpose of this experiment is to characterize these domain interactions. Using a urea …

Mosquito Diversity And Positive Pools For The West Nile Virus In Forested Versus Non-Forested Areas, Elizabeth C. Paul
Mosquito Diversity And Positive Pools For The West Nile Virus In Forested Versus Non-Forested Areas, Elizabeth C. Paul
Honors Projects
The West Nile virus (WNV) is one of the leading causes of mosquito borne illness in the United States (CDC, 2018). This virus is a neurotropic pathogen that can cause fever and encephalitis. It is known that the Culex species is the primary vector for WNV. Humans infected with the WNV are typically asymptomatic. There is a small portion of individuals that experience West Nile fever which could include symptoms like high fever, vision loss, and coma (CDC, 2018). Previous studies have shown that mosquitoes tend to favor forests and wetlands (Hay et al., 1998), however, it is unknown if …

A New Age Of Evolution: Protecting The Consumer’S Moral And Legal Right To Know Through The Clear And Transparent Labeling Of All Genetically Modified Foods, Halie M. Evans
Journal of Law and Health
The United States government, until recently, did not require the labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). On July 29, 2016, President Barack Obama signed into law the National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard (NBFDS). This law directs the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to create regulations that require manufacturers to disclose certain bioengineered products on food labels. On December 20, 2018, the USDA released the final regulations for the NBFDS, which requires food manufactures, importers, and certain retailers to ensure bioengineered foods are appropriately disclosed. The final regulations include provisions that will leave the majority of GMO derived foods unlabeled. …
Parens Patriae And Parental Rights: When Should The State Override Parental Medical Decisions?, Elchanan G. Stern
Parens Patriae And Parental Rights: When Should The State Override Parental Medical Decisions?, Elchanan G. Stern
Journal of Law and Health
Alfie Evans was a terminally ill British child whose parents, clinging to hope, were desperately trying to save his life. Hospital authorities disagreed and petitioned the court to enjoin the parents from removing him and taking him elsewhere for treatment. The court stepped in and compelled the hospital to discontinue life support and claimed that further treatment was not in the child’s best interest. This note discusses the heartbreaking stories of Alfie and two other children whose parents’ medical decisions on their behalf were overridden by the court. It argues that courts should never decide that death is in a …

Physical Activity Patterns Among Undergraduate Colleges At The University Of Texas At Arlington, Jeanne Bandalaria
2019 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
The correlation between undergraduate majors/colleges and their corresponding levels of physical activity was investigated at the University of Texas at Arlington. The relationship between the two subjects of research was determined by the method of a survey, as inspired by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). The IPAQ serves to analyze data through a series of questions that determine an individual’s weekly average of vigorous to moderate exercise based on their job, major, leisure activity, and time spent sedentary. Pie charts and tables are presented to depict the survey’s findings of undergraduate major, college, and times of physical and sedentary …
The Effect Of Perinatal Depression Upon Neonatal Outcome In A Population Of Adolescent Latinas, Jocelyn Ruiz
The Effect Of Perinatal Depression Upon Neonatal Outcome In A Population Of Adolescent Latinas, Jocelyn Ruiz
2019 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
The purpose of this secondary analysis was to explore the prevalence of perinatal depression and effects of depression upon neonatal outcomes among Latina adolescents. The subjects included Latina adolescents (13-19 years old; N=183) giving birth at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, TX. The study design was a secondary analysis of data originally collected over nine months postpartum to explore adolescents’ (N=303) mental health and birth experiences. Depression variables were measured via a one-item rating scale for prenatal depression and the Edinburg Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS). A composite variable of this data defined perinatal depression. Adverse infant outcomes included …
Zombie Firms And The Interest Rate Channel, Ismael Guzman-Diaz
Zombie Firms And The Interest Rate Channel, Ismael Guzman-Diaz
2019 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
In this paper we investigate the interaction between interest rates and the prevalence of so called ‘Zombie’ firms. Zombie firms are relatively unproductive, insolvent firms, who nevertheless remain in the market. The past several decades have witnessed a steady rise in the prevalence of these firms across advanced economies. Significant evidence now exists of their detrimental effects on healthy firms within their industries and on the economy as a whole through allocative inefficiencies and drags on productivity growth. Notably, this zombie phenomenon coincides with the long-term lowering trend in benchmark interest rates, providing a theoretical life-support mechanism through which zombie …

Ulnar Collateral Ligament Reconstruction With Traditional Docking Compared To Novel Surgical Techniques, Kayley D. Guy, Brendon P. Mcdermott, Kaitlin Gallagher, Tyrone Washington
Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses
Background: Ulnar Collateral Ligament Reconstruction (UCLR) is a surgical procedure on one of the main ligaments that provides normal stability for the elbow joint against excessive valgus stress. Damage to this ligament is common in athletes performing overhead throwing activities, primarily baseball players, due to excessive valgus stress during the throwing motion. The most common form of treatment for this type of injury is reconstructive surgery of the ligament, especially if athletes wish to return to sport participation. This type of surgery is extremely invasive and requires extensive post-operative rehabilitation in order to facilitate return to play. To date, many …
Sexual Assault By Federal Actors, #Metoo, And Civil Rights, Julie Goldscheid
Sexual Assault By Federal Actors, #Metoo, And Civil Rights, Julie Goldscheid
Washington Law Review
Calls for accountability for gender violence have permeated public discourse in the aftermath of the #MeToo movement. While much attention has focused on high profile individuals accused of harassment, less attention has been paid to sexual assaults of more vulnerable and marginalized people, including low wage workers, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and gender non-conforming people, and immigrants. In addition, at the same time that calls for accountability have targeted Hollywood, employers, universities, and even the Catholic church, relatively little outcry has focused on the longstanding and under-recognized problem of sexual assaults by government actors. This Article focuses on sexual assault …
Addiction-Informed Immigration Reform, Rebecca Sharpless
Addiction-Informed Immigration Reform, Rebecca Sharpless
Washington Law Review
Immigration law fails to align with the contemporary understanding of substance addiction as a medical condition. The Immigration and Nationality Act regards noncitizens who suffer from drug or alcohol substance use disorder as immoral and undesirable. Addiction is a ground of exclusion and deportation and can prevent the finding of “good moral character” needed for certain immigration applications. Substance use disorder can lead to criminal behavior that lands noncitizens, including lawful permanent residents, in removal proceedings with no defense. The time has come for immigration law to catch up to today’s understanding of addiction. The damage done by failing to …
Piecing Together Precedent: Fragmented Decisions From The Washington State Supreme Court, Rachael Clark
Piecing Together Precedent: Fragmented Decisions From The Washington State Supreme Court, Rachael Clark
Washington Law Review
For decades, countless jurisdictions have grappled with the ambiguous precedential weight of court decisions that lack a majority opinion. In American jurisprudence, applying a “majority,” “lead,” “concurrence,” or “dissent” label to an appellate court opinion indicates agreement or disagreement with the judgment of the case. When a decision is fragmented (that is, there is no majority opinion), courts often express the judgment of the court with one opinion labeled as the “plurality” or “lead” opinion. Traditionally, labeling an opinion as a “lead opinion” indicates that the reasoning expressed within the opinion has more support than the other opinions written for …
A Proposal To Improve Washington's Rules On Ex Parte Contact, Connor Rowinski
A Proposal To Improve Washington's Rules On Ex Parte Contact, Connor Rowinski
Washington Law Review
Privilege doctrines play an important role in allowing clients to confide in their trusted attorneys and doctors. The intersection of two privilege doctrines in medical malpractice litigation—physician-patient privilege and attorney-client privilege—places physicians working at corporate hospitals in a catch-22 of allegiances. On one hand, physicians cannot disclose patient information, whereas on the other, they must assist their employer in defending the case. These concerns are heightened when attorneys seek to communicate with non-party physicians ex parte—that is, unsupervised. In Youngs v. Peacehealth, the Washington State Supreme Court allowed corporate defendants to communicate ex parte with the plaintiff’s treating physician under …

Physical Characterization And Evaluation Of Energy Potential For Mined Waste From Irving Landfill, Vijay Kakara
Physical Characterization And Evaluation Of Energy Potential For Mined Waste From Irving Landfill, Vijay Kakara
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
Historically landfills have been seen as the ultimate solution for storing waste at minimum cost. But, now it is a well-known fact that these deposits have numerous implications such as long term methane emissions, local pollution and many space-related issues etc. In most parts of the world, however, landfilling is the most common method to dispose waste. Even developed countries with recycling and waste treatment facilities have been no exception in landfilling. Therefore over the years, several old and operating landfills have been accumulated with an enormous amount of obsolete materials and products. To address such issues related to waste …

Electrowetting-On-Dielectric (Ewod) Digital Microfluidic Device For Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Matin Torabinia
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Over the past decades, microscale chemical reaction technology has been attractive in diverse areas of chemistry. It allows the precise control of quantified reagents and highly efficient heat and mass transfer, because of a large interface-to-volume ratio–particularly in case of the exothermic reaction and mixing–, reduced consumption of toxic or expensive agents, improved reaction profiles, and enhanced selectivity compared to macro-scale reactions. The mainstream microscale reaction processes were established using continuous microchannel flow systems, which has emerged as a powerful complement to batch chemistry on the laboratory scale due to relative advantages, some of which include: increased safety, more accurate …

African American Women's Resistance In The Aftermath Of Lynching, Lacey A. Brown-Bernal
History Theses - Archive
This thesis focuses on resistance strategies used by African American women in the aftermath of lynching in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It examines the ways in which those strategies were shared, modified, and deployed by black women activists throughout the Jim Crow Era and traces the connection to contemporary movements for social justice. The starting point for this study of generational change within African American women’s resistance to violence is the transatlantic anti-lynching campaign of Ida B. Wells and an examination of newspaper articles that detailed her actions while abroad with an eye to considering how her …
Advances In Liquid Chromatography And Liquid Chromatography- Mass Spectrometry For The Chiral Analysis Of Amino Acids And Differentiation Of Isomeric Amino Acid Residues In Peptides/Proteins From Complex Matrices, Siqi Du
Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive
Amino acids are essential building blocks in all living organisms. Initially it was believed that only L-amino acids were relevant in higher organisms, and D-amino acids were laboratory artifacts. Today, various D-amino acids have been detected in different organisms, including humans, and some even play essential roles in biological processes. In addition, abnormal D-amino acid levels have been reported in patients with different diseases. The variations in D-amino acid levels might be of some diagnostic value. However, our knowledge of D-amino acids remains limited and most of the D-amino acids are not well investigated due to the lack of a …

A Critical State Approach To The Mechanical Behavior Of Early-Age Cemented Paste Backfill, Amin B. Ghorbanpour
Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Low plasticity to non-plastic mine tailings are typically transported to a storage area through pipelines in form of slurry or thickened tailings. The main concern with such tailings deposits is the possibility of liquefaction and the consequent failure of the tailings retaining dams. Tailings can also be used as Cemented Paste Backfill (CPB) material to fill previously mined underground voids. The state of practice to improve the mechanical properties of tailings is to add a small quantity of cementitious materials or binder agents. Portland cement (PC) is the most common binder agent that is used to improve the mechanical properties …

Sub-Synchronous Resonance Analysis And Detection, Igor Brandao Machado Matsuo
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
With the increasing penetration of renewable generation resources, power grids have become more susceptible to sub-synchronous resonance phenomena, especially to sub-synchronous control interaction, which produces fast-growing oscillations. The power system operation requirements for a reliable, fast and accurate detection and monitoring system for protection and mitigation purposes are increasing. Besides, risk assessment analysis during grid planning and update studies can be extremely time-consuming due to a large number of possible grid configurations and small time-steps required for the simulation of detailed electromagnetic transient (EMT) models. The first part of this dissertation aims to provide an optimized tool for SSR risk …
