Growth Differentiation Factor 11 Locally Controls Anterior-Posterior Patterning Of The Axial Skeleton., Joonho Suh, Je-Hyun Eom, Na-Kyung Kim, Kyung Mi Woo, Jeong-Hwa Baek, Hyun-Mo Ryoo, Se-Jin Lee, Yun-Sil Lee Dec 2019

Growth Differentiation Factor 11 Locally Controls Anterior-Posterior Patterning Of The Axial Skeleton., Joonho Suh, Je-Hyun Eom, Na-Kyung Kim, Kyung Mi Woo, Jeong-Hwa Baek, Hyun-Mo Ryoo, Se-Jin Lee, Yun-Sil Lee

Faculty Research 2019

Growth and differentiation factor 11 (GDF11) is a transforming growth factor β family member that has been identified as the central player of anterior-posterior (A-P) axial skeletal patterning. Mice homozygous for Gdf11 deletion exhibit severe anterior homeotic transformations of the vertebrae and craniofacial defects. During early embryogenesis, Gdf11 is expressed predominantly in the primitive streak and tail bud regions, where new mesodermal cells arise. On the basis of this expression pattern of Gdf11 and the phenotype of Gdf11 mutant mice, it has been suggested that GDF11 acts to specify positional identity along the A-P axis either by local changes in …

Comparative Analysis Of Metabolome Of Rice Seeds At Three Developmental Stages Using A Recombinant Inbred Line Population., Kang Li, Dehong Wang, Liang Gong, Yuanyuan Lyu, Hao Guo, Wei Chen, Cheng Jin, Xianqing Liu, Chuanying Fang, Jie Luo

Faculty Research 2019

Plants are considered an important food and nutrition source for humans. Despite advances in plant seed metabolomics, knowledge about the genetic and molecular bases of rice seed metabolomes at different developmental stages is still limited. Here, using Zhenshan 97 (ZS97) and Minghui 63 (MH63), we performed a widely targeted metabolic profiling in seeds during grain filling, mature seeds and germinating seeds. The diversity between MH63 and ZS97 was characterized in terms of the content of metabolites and the metabolic shifting across developmental stages. Taking advantage of the ultra-high-density genetic map of a population of 210 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived …

Visualizing regions of conserved synteny between two genomes is supported by numerous software applications. However, none of the current applications allow researchers to select genome features to display or highlight in blocks of synteny based on the annotated biological properties of the features (e.g., type, function, and/or phenotype association). To address this usability gap, we developed an interactive web-based conserved synteny browser, The Jackson Laboratory (JAX) Synteny Browser. The browser allows researchers to highlight or selectively display genome features in the reference and/or the comparison genome according to the biological attributes of the features. Although the current implementation for the …

Assessment Of Bones Deficient In Fibrillin-1 Microfibrils Reveals Pronounced Sex Differences., Lukas Altinbas, Nicole Bormann, Daniel Lehmann, Sarah Jeuthe, Dag Wulsten, Uwe Kornak, Peter N Robinson, Britt Wildemann, Georgios Kararigas

Faculty Research 2019

Defects in the extracellular matrix protein fibrillin-1 that perturb transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) bioavailability lead to Marfan syndrome (MFS). MFS is an autosomal-dominant disorder, which is associated with connective tissue and skeletal defects, among others. To date, it is unclear how biological sex impacts the structural and functional properties of bone in MFS. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of sex on bone microarchitecture and mechanical properties in mice with deficient fibrillin-1, a model of human MFS. Bones of 11-week-old male and female Fbn1mgR/mgR mice were investigated. Three-dimensional micro-computed tomography of femora and vertebrae …

Effectiveness Of Campusclarity By Everfi’S Sexual Harassment Prevention Program On Victimization Rates, Harold Leon Seifers Iii

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a correlation between the number of reported incidences of rape and stalking on college campuses and campuses that utilize CampusClarity by EVERFI as an educational tool to “reduce risky student behavior and prevent sexual assault on your campus.” The study investigated the relationship between the dependent variables, incidences of rape and stalking, versus the independent variables: partnership, men’s population, women’s population, on-campus drug crime, on-campus alcohol crime, on-campus domestic violence, and on-campus dating violence. The 11,181 campuses that report crime data required by the Clery Act were included as …

What Determines Venture Capital Investment Decisions? Evidence From The Emerging Vc Market In Egypt, Elsayeda A. Ismail, Mona I. Medhat Dec 2019

What Determines Venture Capital Investment Decisions? Evidence From The Emerging Vc Market In Egypt, Elsayeda A. Ismail, Mona I. Medhat

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

The decision of a venture capitalist to commit capital in a new risky business is a complex decision. Investors need to consider a number of important criteria simultaneously. Based on the postulates of signaling theory and the investment criteria outlined in the extant literature, we propose a theoretical framework to describe the relationship between a new venture’s characteristics and the funding decision. The proposed framework is tested using actual data of a unique sample of 200 new Egyptian technological startups. The startups were tracked from establishment until applying to a venture capitalist and a decision was made either to accept …

Study Abroad Strengths-Based Curriculum: Advancing Self-Reflection And Relationship-Building Leadership Skills, Elizabeth Moldenhauer, Melissa Osland, Theresa A. Waterbury

Leadership Education Capstones

Immersion in a strengths-based, study abroad program provided extensive opportunity for leadership growth. Navigating the unknown added to the challenge students experienced during their student-organized activities. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how a strengths-based curricula design advanced the leadership competency levels of self-reflection and relationship building during a graduate, short-term study abroad program. The findings show before and during the program, self-reflection led to thoughtful discussions, which led to valuing differences. Self-reflection contributed to deeper self-awareness of how an individual’s primary strengths and blind spots led to mutual respect. On-going mutual respect enhanced relationships through appreciation …

BACKGROUND: Optimal glycemic control is particularly difficult to achieve in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D), yet the influence of dysglycemia on the developing brain remains poorly understood.

METHODS AND FINDINGS: Using a large multi-site study framework, we investigated activation patterns using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in 93 children with T1D (mean age 11.5 ± 1.8 years; 45.2% female) and 57 non-diabetic (control) children (mean age 11.8 ± 1.5 years; 50.9% female) as they performed an executive function paradigm, the go/no-go task. Children underwent scanning and cognitive and clinical assessment at 1 of 5 different sites. Group …

Why Robert Mueller's Appointment As Special Counsel Was Unlawful, Steven G. Calabresi, Gary Lawson Dec 2019

Why Robert Mueller's Appointment As Special Counsel Was Unlawful, Steven G. Calabresi, Gary Lawson

Notre Dame Law Review

Since 1999, when the independent counsel provisions of the Ethics in Government Act expired, the Department of Justice (DOJ) has had in place regulations providing for the appointment of “special counsels” who possess “the full power and independent authority to exercise all investigative and prosecutorial functions of any United States Attorney.” Appointments under these regulations, such as the May 17, 2017 appointment of Robert S. Mueller to investigate the Trump campaign, are patently unlawful, for three distinct reasons.

First, all federal offices must be “established by Law,” and there is no statute authorizing such an office in the DOJ. We …

Empowering The Poor: Turning De Facto Rights Into Collateralized Credit, Steven L. Schwarcz Dec 2019

Empowering The Poor: Turning De Facto Rights Into Collateralized Credit, Steven L. Schwarcz

Notre Dame Law Review

The shrinking middle class and the widening gap between rich and poor threaten social and financial stability. Though sometimes identified as a problem of developing nations, the inability of the poor to obtain credit by using their de facto rights in property as collateral impedes upward mobility in nearly all countries, including the United States. Efforts to solve this problem have focused on trying to transform de facto rights into de jure title under property law. Those efforts have been unsuccessful because, among other reasons, property law is tightly bound to tradition and protecting vested ownership. This Article proposes an …

Broadening Consumer Law: Competition, Protection, And Distribution, Rory Van Loo Dec 2019

Broadening Consumer Law: Competition, Protection, And Distribution, Rory Van Loo

Notre Dame Law Review

Policymakers and scholars have in distributional conversations traditionally ignored consumer laws, defined as the set of consumer protection, antitrust, and entry-barrier laws that govern consumer transactions. Consumer law is overlooked partly because tax law is cast as the most efficient way to redistribute. Another obstacle is that consumer law research speaks to microeconomic and siloed contexts—deceptive fees by Wells Fargo or a proposed merger between Comcast and Time Warner Cable. Even removing millions of dollars of deceptive credit card fees across the nation seems trivial compared to the trillion-dollar growth in income inequality that has sparked concern in recent decades. …

A Practice Worth Ending: Eps Guidance Harming Long-Term Growth, Rachel G. Miller Dec 2019

A Practice Worth Ending: Eps Guidance Harming Long-Term Growth, Rachel G. Miller

Notre Dame Law Review

This Note focuses on one factor—earnings per share (EPS) guidance—that contributes to myopic behavior and short-termism within public companies. Part I discusses the history of the shareholder primacy norm and the need for management to act in the best interest of its shareholders. Additionally, this Part provides background on EPS guidance and the notion of short-termism. Part II lays out a framework for quarterly reporting and argues that the current disclosure requirements should remain intact. This Part addresses the importance of frequency in quarterly reporting and provides two examples—the United Kingdom and Regulation A—of practices with longer reporting frequencies that …

Rediscovering Corfield V. Coryell, Gerard N. Magliocca Dec 2019

Rediscovering Corfield V. Coryell, Gerard N. Magliocca

Notre Dame Law Review

This Article reveals new details about Corfield v. Coryell based on archival research. In 2017, the author found Justice Washington’s original notes on Corfield in the Chicago History Museum. The most important revelation about Corfield is that the Justice was initially inclined to hold that the state law his decision upheld was, in fact, unconstitutional under the Privileges and Immunities Clause. The notes also say that he saw Livingston v. Van Ingen as the leading precedent on the Privileges and Immunities Clause and backed Chancellor Kent’s view in that case that the Clause articulated a nondiscrimination rule for out-of-state citizens …

Schools As Workplaces: Intersectional Regimes Of Inequality, Johanna S. Quinn, Myra Marx Ferree Dec 2019

Schools As Workplaces: Intersectional Regimes Of Inequality, Johanna S. Quinn, Myra Marx Ferree

Sociology Faculty Publications

Joan Acker extended her 1990 brilliant and path‐breaking article, ‘Hierarchies, Jobs, Bodies’, to address the intersectional effects of gender, race and class as ‘inequality regimes’ in her 2006 article of that name. This research picks up her challenge to see embodied workers holding jobs in organizations structured simultaneously and interactively by gender, race and class processes. Rather than studying a corporate regime in which the actors are managers, supervisors and workers, this study looks at the organizational interactions among teachers and paraprofessionals in one large, urban and unionized school district in the United States. We look at skill, care and …

Standardized Waterproof Testing Of Plastic Based Material Flooring (Pbm Flooring), John P. Sanders, Cody Spence

Publications

Tile Council of North America Product Performance Testing Laboratory, under the direction of Dr. John Sanders of the Bishop Materials Laboratory at Clemson University, evaluated the extent that water can leak through plastic based material (PBM)1 floor coverings advertised as 100% waterproof. To make this assessment, product literature was examined to determine which test methods were used to support the manufacturers’2 claims of products being waterproof. Neither test methods or data to justify a 100% waterproof claim were found, despite a thorough review of product literature.3

ASTM, ANSI, ISO, and CEN standards were examined for relevant test …

Laughing Back: A Phenomenological Study Of Disability Humor Using Culturally Responsive Methodologies, Kinda Abujbarah Dec 2019

Laughing Back: A Phenomenological Study Of Disability Humor Using Culturally Responsive Methodologies, Kinda Abujbarah

Education (PhD) Dissertations

Historically, disabled people have not been viewed as innovators of humor because disability is associated with tragedy. My dissertation challenged the association of disability with tragedy by positioning disabled comedians as educators and ambassadors of disability rights. I reviewed the literature on disability and humor as well as disability oppression, which disability humor challenges. I used phenomenology as well as culturally responsive methodologies to examine what disabled comedians are achieving with their humor and what nondisabled audience members learned from attending their performances. Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory of learning was used to examine learning outcomes for audience members. I examined historical …

Combating Judicial Misconduct: A Stoic Approach, Michael D. Cicchini Dec 2019

Combating Judicial Misconduct: A Stoic Approach, Michael D. Cicchini

Buffalo Law Review

Judicial ethics rules require criminal court judges to be competent, even-tempered, and impartial. In reality, however, many judges are grossly ignorant of the law, incredibly hostile toward the defense, and outright biased in favor of the state. Such acts of judicial misconduct pose serious problems for the criminal defense lawyer and violate many of the defendant’s statutory and constitutional rights.

This Article presents a framework for the defense lawyer to use in combating judicial misconduct. The approach is rooted in a principle of Stoic philosophy called “negative visualization.” That is, the lawyer should anticipate and visualize judicial incompetence, hostility, and …

Psychometric Evaluation Of The Casey-Fink Graduate Nurse Experience Survey, Kathryn C. Casey Dec 2019

Psychometric Evaluation Of The Casey-Fink Graduate Nurse Experience Survey, Kathryn C. Casey

Dissertations

Graduate nurses experience stress transitioning from the role of nursing student to practicing professional nurse. Understanding the graduate nurse’s role transition experience is important because excessive and unrelieved stress might influence job satisfaction and contribute to high turnover. Measuring and improving the role transition experience for graduate nurses has become important for healthcare organizations due to concerns regarding retention. A valid and reliable instrument was needed to assess the graduate nurse’s role transition experience. The Casey-Fink Graduate Nurse Experience Survey (Casey, Fink, Krugman, & Propst, 2004) is the most commonly used instrument to measure the stressors, fears, and challenges experienced …

We Were Asked To Deny A Part Of Ourselves —And We Did: How Black Women Doctoral Students Experience Their Intersectional Identities In Race-Based Activism, Cherjanet Diane Lenzy

Dissertations

This study explored the experiences of 10 Black women doctoral students’ experiences with their intersectional identities in race-based activist work. Grounded in Black feminist thought and critical race feminism, participants engaged in a multi-method inquiry that employed in-depth interviews. “Artistic Story” was additionally used as a method to provoke intentional reflection. Counterstory methodology with the influences of testimonio and testifying techniques, coupled with an endarkend feminist epistemology, situated the study to commit to a reflective process that engaged the researcher and the participants simultaneously. The data analysis first revealed the theme unconscious back-seating, where participants were regulated to the back-seat …

The Failings Of Title Ix For Survivors Of Sexual Violence: Utilizing Restorative Justice On College Campuses, Katie Vail Dec 2019

The Failings Of Title Ix For Survivors Of Sexual Violence: Utilizing Restorative Justice On College Campuses, Katie Vail

Washington Law Review

Universities should adopt restorative justice practices to serve the legal and personal needs of student survivors of sexual violence. Title IX prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs and activities operated by recipients of federal financial assistance. Since 1997, the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights has issued “Dear Colleague Letters” to federally funded institutions to assist with Title IX compliance and implement procedures for complaints of sexual violence. In 2011, Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Russlyn Ali under the Obama administration issued a Dear Colleague Letter, which expanded protections for survivors. However, it prohibited the …
