The Evolving Beef Industry And Its Sustainability In Western China, J. P. Wu, Z. M. Lei, L. P. Zhang, X. R. Wang, S. G. Zhao, C. Q. Zhang, G. H. Sun, S. G. Li
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The beef industry in China has started to develop since the 1980s. Since then, its production system has been evolving significantly from subsistence production towards business operation in farmer households. As demands continue to grow, China will become the largest beef consumption country in the world by the year of 2025. The beef production in China’s western agriculture regions is gaining significant role in the beef industry of China. Utilization of corn stover and other agriculture aftermath is seen as the competitive advantage of development of the beef industry. Over the last 30 years the beef production efficiency has been …

Developing A Diet Authentication System From The Composition Of Meat In Ruminants, F. J. Monahan, A. P. Moloney, O. Schmidt
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
As consumer interest in the link between diet and human health and in the ethics of food production increases assurances about the background origin of food are sought. In the case of animal-derived foods, such as meat, the animal’s diet is an intrinsic component of the food’s production and of its subsequent nutritional quality. Thus, there is a need to develop ways of validating the authenticity of the animal diet. Among the approaches to authenticate the background diet of ruminants is the measurement of components in meat (muscle and adipose tissue) and other tissues that are directly influenced by the …

Characterizing Feeds And Feed Availability In Sud-Kivu Province, Dr Congo, Samy B. Bacigale, Birthe K. Paul, Fabrice L. Muhimuzi, Neville Mapenzi, Michael Peters, Brigitte L. Maass
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Animal husbandry in the Sud-Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is gradually moving towards stall feeding, due to demographic pressure (Battistin et al. 2009) and scarcity of collectable forages (DSRP-RDC 2005). Therefore, feed is considered one of the main constraints faced by livestock production, especially in the dry season (Katunga et al. 2009; Maass et al. 2012). Unaffordable, fluctuating prices and inaccessibility of feed concentrates and the lack of improved forages adapted to marginal conditions, making them non-competitive with food crops, further exacerbate the livestock feeding situation. This study within the African Food …

BMI, a ratio of weight over height, is a culturally-biased tool imposed upon the scientific, academic and medical communities as an errant measure of obesity across ethnic - ity. Body Mass Index (BMI) relates mass (g) to a relative fat distribution with regards to height. Its genesis is from the actuarially derived and ethnically exclusive height and weight tables that promote the fictional notion of inter-eth - nic ideal weights that would be later adopted by the Na - tional Institutes of Health (NIH) as a competent measure of adiposity. Best practice, movement towards individualized medicine and deployment of effective …

Structural Changes And Technological Progress As Factors Of Labour Market Developments In The V4 Countries In 2004–2018, Tomasz Białowąs, Paweł Pasierbiak, Monika Wojtas
European Management Studies
In 2004–2018, Central European countries experienced significant structural changes that affected the labour market as well. These included an increase in the activity rate and a decrease in unemployment, a growing share of those employed in the services sector and increased flexibility of employment. The main focus of the paper is on the developments in the V4 countries’ labour markets in comparison to more general trends in the European Union and global economy. The aim was to investigate the impact of two determinants of the changes: technological progress and structural transformations of the economy. The results of the analysis revealed …
Impact Of The Quality Of Supervisors’ Relationships With Subordinates On Employability And Job Satisfaction Of Public Organizations’ Workers, Izabela Marzec
Impact Of The Quality Of Supervisors’ Relationships With Subordinates On Employability And Job Satisfaction Of Public Organizations’ Workers, Izabela Marzec
European Management Studies
Changes in the area of employment in public organizations make the enhancement of their workers’ employability acquire special importance. In this context, attention should be paid to the role of supervisors in this process. The theory of Leader-Member Exchange (LMX), which indicates that the quality of supervisors’ relationships with subordinates may become an important tool for workers’ employability enhancement, provides an important input on this issue (Schyns, Torka, & Gössling, 2007; Van der Heijden et al., 2009). This paper tries to answer the questions: how do employees of public organizations evaluate their job satisfaction as well as what are the …

What Really Counts? – Factors Related To Effectiveness Of Students’ Team In Social Projects, Aleksandra Spik
European Management Studies
The aim of the study was to explore the factors that determine students’ team effectiveness. The study investigated the relations between three types of team effectiveness (performance, behavior, attitude) and five attributes of teamwork: common purpose, communication and problem resolution, role clarity and psychological safety. In the study, quantitative research was performed among undergraduate Polish students of management who had to conduct a real non-profit project that would tackle a social issue. The questionnaire used in the study was specifically developed. The results show that three components of team effectiveness have different patterns of predictors. The perceived quality of goal …

Antecedents Of Workplace Deviance: Role Of Job Insecurity, Work Stress, And Ethical Work Climate, Shuaib Ahmed Soomro, Yasir Mansoor Kundi, Muhammad Kamran
European Management Studies
This study examines why and how job insecurity affects employees’ deviant behaviour at work. To develop our hypotheses, we build on the conservation of resources theory. Our hypotheses suggested that job insecurity would be positively related to work stress and workplace deviance. Moreover, an ethical work climate was hypothesised to moderate the relationship between work stress and workplace deviance. Using data from 174 employees working in Multi-National Corporations (MNCs) located in Pakistan, the findings indicated that job insecurity has consequences for work stress and two facets of workplace deviance. Further, we found that an ethical work climate prevents employees from …

Mers-Cov Infection In South Korea And Strategies For Possible Future Outbreak: Narrative Review, Chulwoo Park
Mers-Cov Infection In South Korea And Strategies For Possible Future Outbreak: Narrative Review, Chulwoo Park
Faculty Publications
Although there were some positive viewpoints from international press and academia that the Republic of Korea (hereafter South Korea) successfully controlled the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) outbreak in 2015, the domestic point of view towards the MERS response in South Korea was critical. As people in the world’s 11th largest economy, South Koreans criticized the failure of hospitals’ initial response to the MERS index case and the lack of a proper control strategy for secondary and tertiary cases. To contain the MERS outbreak, South Korea implemented mainly three MERS control and intervention strategies: quarantine and isolation system, temporary closure …

This article indicates that the traditional model of full-time employment based on an employment contract for an unfixed term – where the employee carries out a certain kind of work under the guidance of the employer and in a location and at times designated by the employer – becomes doubtful for some categories of employees (e.g. top managers, advisers, experts, those compiling various assessments and evaluations, providing legal and financial-economic services, giving lectures, providing various forms of mediation and agency, investor supervision). From the macro point of view and from the organizational point of view, we must answer the questions: …

Introduction Preschoolers have the highest rate of emergency visits and hospitalisations for asthma exacerbations of all age groups, with most triggered by upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) and occurring in the fall or winter. Vitamin D insufficiency is highly prevalent in Canadian preschoolers with recurrent asthma exacerbations, particularly in winter. It is associated with more URTIs and, in patients with asthma, more oral corticosteroid (OCS) use. Although evidence suggests that vitamin D supplements significantly decrease URTIs and asthma exacerbations requiring OCS, there is insufficient data in preschoolers. This study aims to determine the impact of vitamin D 3 supplementation on …
Disordered Eating In Collegiate Athletes: Prevalence And Relationships With Body Composition, Sofia Apsey
Disordered Eating In Collegiate Athletes: Prevalence And Relationships With Body Composition, Sofia Apsey
Master's Theses
Performance pressures and emphasis on body weight and shape put collegiate athletes at risk for disordered eating. If not identified early, disordered eating behaviors could develop into a clinical eating disorder. While such behaviors are a known problem, prevalence rates are not well established in collegiate athletes. Disordered eating may also relate to physiological changes in athletes, such as body composition and performance, although this relationship is not well understood. The aims of this research were to 1) determine the prevalence of disordered eating risk in NCAA Division I student-athletes and 2) determine if such behaviors are related to baseline …

Establishment Of Wildflower Islands To Enhance Roadside Health And Aesthetics, Walter Schacht, Judy Wu-Smart
Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports
Wildflowers are crucial in the ecological function of the low-input roadside plant communities in terms of water andnutrient cycling, nutrient inputs such as nitrogen, total plant canopy cover, stand longevity, and provision of habitat for numerous small animals. Further, wildflowers provide critical foraging and nesting resources for birds, insects, and other wildlife. Unfortunately, habitat loss from agricultural and urban development has led to rapid population declines in wild bees and other pollinators across the US, thereby jeopardizing not only food production but also the sustainability of our natural landscapes (Kearns & Inouye, 1997). One way to mitigate wild bee decline …

Adult fish produce new cells throughout their central nervous system during the course of their lives and maintain a tremendous capacity to repair damaged neural tissue. Much of the focus on understanding brain repair and regeneration in adult fish has been directed at regions of the brainstem and forebrain; however, the mesencephalon (midbrain) and diencephalon have received little attention. We sought to examine differential gene expression in the midbrain/diencephalon in response to injury in the adult fish using RNA-seq. Using the mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus), we administered a mechanical lesion to the midbrain/diencephalon and examined differentially expressed genes (DEGs) …

A Rare Presentation Of A Giant Epidermal Cyst Of The Parietooccipital Region: A Case Reports, David Kereh, Septiman Septiman
The New Ropanasuri Journal of Surgery
Introduction. Epidermal cysts are common benign cutaneous cysts. An epidermal cyst may be classified as a giant epidermal cyst if it exceeds 5 cm. Giant epidermal cysts with a diameter of 5 cm or more are rare but have been reported. The epidermal cyst rarely discloses malignancy. Although rare, a case of malignant change of benign epidermal cyst is possible. We describe here a rare case of a giant epidermal cyst of the parietooccipital region in a 35-year-old man.
Case Illustration. A 35-year-old man was admitted to the hospital with a huge swelling over the scalp for the …
Expression And Purification Of Snake Antivenom Peptide In Pichia Pastoris, Israel Juarez Contreras
Expression And Purification Of Snake Antivenom Peptide In Pichia Pastoris, Israel Juarez Contreras
Master's Theses
It has been shown that a peptide of the first 10-15 N-terminal amino acids of the lethal toxin neutralizing factor (LTNF) protein found in opossums (Didelphis spp.) holds promise as a low-cost therapy for snake envenomation. To date, the 11-mer has been expressed in E. coli and shown to neutralize snake venoms. However, possible endotoxin concerns warrant an investigation into other microbial hosts. The methylotrophic yeast, Pichia pastoris, shows promise as an alternative host. Active LTNF peptide was expressed and purified in P. pastoris. This was accomplished by subcloning a tandem repeat of the first 15 N-terminal amino acids of …

BACKGROUND: The course of Alzheimer's disease (AD) includes a 10-20-year preclinical period with progressive accumulation of amyloid β (Aβ) plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the absence of symptomatic cognitive or functional decline. The duration of this preclinical stage in part depends on the rate of pathologic progression, which is offset by compensatory mechanisms, referred to as cognitive reserve (CR). Comorbid medical conditions, psychosocial stressors, and inappropriate medication use may lower CR, hastening the onset of symptomatic AD. Here, we describe a randomized controlled trial (RCT) designed to test the efficacy of a medication therapy management (MTM) intervention to reduce inappropriate …
