Detection Of And Response To Accessibility-Related Behavioral Cues, Collin Irwin, Rachel Hausmann Dec 2019

Detection Of And Response To Accessibility-Related Behavioral Cues, Collin Irwin, Rachel Hausmann

Defensive Publications Series

A system is described that enables a computing device (e.g., a mobile phone, smart watch, tablet computer, etc.) to detect behavioral cues from a user and recommend relevant accessibility settings for the user based on the detected behavioral cues. The computing device may use various sensors to detect accessibility-related behavioral cues and analyze the detected behavioral cues to identify a relevant accessibility setting. For example, a computing device may use a radio detection and ranging (radar) system to detect behavioral cues from a user as inputs and may identify a relevant accessibility setting that benefits the user based on the …

Trihydroxybenzoic Acid Analogs As A Potential Drug Formulation For Inflammatory Diseases, Haleema Irfan, Foram Madiyar

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

The project seeks to establish the link between toll-like receptors (TLR) in the pathogenesis of inflammation and formulate a trihydroxy benzoic acid (THBA) analog as a potential drug formulation for inflammatory diseases.

We aim to develop a stable drug-polymer complex of THBA using pH-sensitive polymers that will target inflammation. Various analogs of THBA will be synthesized with nano-co-precipitation experimentation for optimization using a variety of polymers, solvents, and stabilizers to increase the solubility in aqueous conditions and determine the most effective combination. The particle size, drug loading, and dissolution profile under various pH are discussed with various polymers. The formulated …

Exploration of Transportation in Nordic Countries: Observations of Accessibility, Design, and Ease

Commuter satisfaction is an under-represented topic in transportation research. The purpose of this paper is to highlight applications of user-oriented design in Nordic countries that are used to improve commuter usability, satisfaction and safety. The researcher wanted to answer questions relating to what urban planning designs provide ease for those commuting in this region and to those that need extra assistance; and what is implemented to ensure safety for commuters. To answer these questions, an observational methodology was used to obtain and code data from imagery and notes …

Establishing A Presumption Of Competence In The Ela Classroom: One Teacher’S Story Of Creating Space For Autistic Culture, Christopher Bass Dec 2019

Establishing A Presumption Of Competence In The Ela Classroom: One Teacher’S Story Of Creating Space For Autistic Culture, Christopher Bass

Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture

Much has been written about the exclusive nature of inclusive teaching (Allan 2015; Owen & Gabriel, 2010; Smith 2010; Ware, 2004). Many general educators approach neurodiversity with a deficit approach (Smagorinsky, Tobin and Lee, 2019; Myers, 2019) As an active ELA teacher, I argue that teachers must first establish a presumption of competence (Biklen, 2005), then model and promote asset-based rhetoric around ability. Once students engage with asset-based rhetoric, the classroom may become more inclusive of autistic culture. This article shares the story of my attempt to establish a presumption of competence through student tattoos.

Seeing In Color: How Are Teachers Perceiving Our Diverse Autistic Students?, Merida Lang

Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture

Although the discipline gap between Black and White students is well documented and the discipline gap between students with disabilities and those without has also been researched, the discipline gap between autistic students of color and White students has received very little attention. This essay asks educators to consider the ways in which autistic students of color exist in a specific cross section of double-discrimination and considers what can be done to reduce unconscious bias, including developing a broader and more diverse understanding of autistic culture.

Truffaut’S L’Enfant Sauvage (The Wild Child, 1970): Evoking Autism And The Nascent “Eugenic Atlantic”, Joy C. Schaefer

Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture

This essay analyzes François Truffaut’s L’Enfant sauvage (The Wild Child, 1970) as an early representation of autism that metaphorizes the neurodiverse child as the colonial subject. The film takes place in 1798, only a decade after the French Revolution, and depicts the true events of the “wild boy of Aveyron,” a feral child found in the Southern French forest when he was twelve years old. Before the film’s production, Truffaut—who also plays the boy’s teacher, Dr. Jean-Marc Itard—collected articles and books on autism and viewed videos of autistic children to create his main character’s behavioral patterns. The film …

Project Thetis is a 35-member team comprised of 4 sub-teams including design, software, electrical and logistics. Our project aims to reduce the commonality of micro-plastics by extracting them from anhydrous sand samples. Micro-plastics are the most common form of pollutant in marine systems, but in the last year have been reported in every tested ecosystem including mountain ranges around the globe, freshwater systems, and the atmosphere. We have chosen to focus on micro-plastic extraction from anhydrous sand as it is a neglected ecosystem in current efforts to remove micro-plastics from the environment. Extraction will be done using electric force attraction …

High Rate Quasi-Steady-State Pattern Visual Evoked Potentials For Brain-Computer Interface, Ibrahim Kaya Dec 2019

High Rate Quasi-Steady-State Pattern Visual Evoked Potentials For Brain-Computer Interface, Ibrahim Kaya

Open Access Dissertations

Visual Evoked Potentials (VEPs) are electrophysiological signals recorded from occipital areas of the scalp in response to visual stimulation. VEPs are used for clinical monitoring of diseases and Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs). Depending on the stimulation rate, there are two types of VEPs, transient (low stimulation rates < 3Hz) and Steady-State (higher stimulation rates >5Hz). However, a novel VEP stimulation paradigm was developed at the University of Miami, Neurosensory Laboratory. This paradigm generates low jittered VEPs similar to Steady-State VEP (SSVEP) and called Quasi-Steady State VEPs (QSS-VEPs). QSS paradigm has proven itself in the fast acquisition of Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABRs) and Pattern Electroretinograms (PERGs). One major advantage …
