Spatial And Temporal Trends Of Southeastern Florida's Octocoral Comunity, Alexandra Hiley Dec 2019

Spatial And Temporal Trends Of Southeastern Florida's Octocoral Comunity, Alexandra Hiley

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

In the Caribbean, local and global stressors have driven significant declines in scleractinian coral cover up to 80% in only three decades. Following these declines, phase shifts in benthic community composition have been reported. Shifts towards macroalgal dominance has been the most widely observed case, however, shifts towards octocoral and sponge dominance have also been reported. In Florida, USA, the Florida Reef Tract is an extensive barrier reef system that contains diverse assemblages of corals, sponges, fish, and other taxa. The Southeast Florida Reef Tract (SEFRT) within the Southeast Florida Coral Reef Conservation Area is the northern portion of this …

The Human Proteome Organization's (HUPO) Human Proteome Project (HPP) developed Mass Spectrometry (MS) Data Interpretation Guidelines that have been applied since 2016. These guidelines have helped ensure that the emerging draft of the complete human proteome is highly accurate and with low numbers of false-positive protein identifications. Here, we describe an update to these guidelines based on consensus-reaching discussions with the wider HPP community over the past year. The revised 3.0 guidelines address several major and minor identified gaps. We have added guidelines for emerging data independent acquisition (DIA) MS workflows and for use of the new Universal Spectrum Identifier …

Machine Learning On Acoustic Signals Applied To High-Speed Bridge Deck Defect Detection, Yao Chou Dec 2019

Machine Learning On Acoustic Signals Applied To High-Speed Bridge Deck Defect Detection, Yao Chou

Theses and Dissertations

Machine learning techniques are being applied to many data-intensive problems because they can accurately provide classification of complex data using appropriate training. Often, the performance of machine learning can exceed the performance of traditional techniques because machine learning can take advantage of higher dimensionality than traditional algorithms. In this work, acoustic data sets taken using a rapid scanning technique on concrete bridge decks provided an opportunity to both apply machine learning algorithms to improve detection performance and also to investigate the ways that training of neural networks can be aided by data augmentation approaches. Early detection and repair can enhance …

Arctic Thaw: Environmental Exploitation For Economic Profit, Stephen F. Moulton Dec 2019

Arctic Thaw: Environmental Exploitation For Economic Profit, Stephen F. Moulton

HCNSO Student Capstones

“Arctic Thaw: Environmental Exploitation for Economic Profit,” is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary assessment of Arctic climate change (CC) impacts. Arctic CC alters the regions’ temperature, annual ice cover, and sea levels. This alteration influences the global economy through enriched international trade and fossil hydrocarbon extraction developments. This capstone examines the Arctic’s response to CC through economic statistical analysis, tracking relative sea-level (RSL) trends, as well as performing hydrographic and modeling reviews. The Northern Rim Countries (NRCs) economic analysis assesses potential CC and GSLR impacts by applying statistical techniques to calculate its effect on each country’s gross domestic product (GDP). The tidal …

Dronescape:Distributed Rapid On-Site Network Self-Deploying Cellular Advanced Phone Environment, Daryl Johnson, Bill Stackpole Dec 2019

Dronescape:Distributed Rapid On-Site Network Self-Deploying Cellular Advanced Phone Environment, Daryl Johnson, Bill Stackpole

Presentations and other scholarship

When disasters happen, the speed with which first responders and emergency personnel can contact and be contacted by the people affected by the disaster during the first minutes or hours is critical. Early communications can make the difference between life and death. During a disaster communications infrastructure of the affected area is likely to be compromised. This project proposes an inexpensive, rapidly deployable cloud of autonomous drones, each coupled with a micro-cellular base station that deploys from a transportable deployment module. The goal is to temporarily restore communications for both first responders to communicate amongst themselves as well as for …

A Program For All Seasons, Sara Rosenbaum Dec 2019

A Program For All Seasons, Sara Rosenbaum

Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy

From its beginnings as a modest health care companion to cash welfare assistance, Medicaid has become foundational to the American health care system. Medicaid’s success in insuring the poor while continually evolving in response to countless emerging health needs is the result of its public health character, which represents a fundamental departure from the eligibility and coverage strictures and norms on which other forms of insurance depend.

Medicaid’S Role For Seniors And People With Disabilities: Current State Trends, Marybeth Musumeci Dec 2019

Medicaid’S Role For Seniors And People With Disabilities: Current State Trends, Marybeth Musumeci

Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy

Medicaid fills a gap in the U.S. health care system as the primary payor for long-term services and supports (LTSS). These services enable seniors, people with disabilities, and those with chronic illnesses to live independently in the community, outside of nursing homes and other institutions. Most Medicaid home and community-based services (HCBS) are covered at state option, unlike nursing home care, which all state Medicaid programs must cover. States have substantial flexibility in designing their Medicaid HCBS programs under federal law, and Medicaid provides an important source of federal funding to states to help meet the LTSS needs of seniors …

Justice And The Struggle For The Soul Of Medicaid, Dayna Bowen Matthew Dec 2019

Justice And The Struggle For The Soul Of Medicaid, Dayna Bowen Matthew

Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy

The soul of Medicaid is and always has been to achieve justice in health care. Medicaid at its inception was designed to ensure that the most vulnerable members of society are not excluded from access to good health that all others enjoy. Yet, as the title of this symposium aptly reflects, “The Struggle for the Soul of Medicaid” remains vulnerable to repeated and relentless political attacks. Why is this so, given that the program finances care for nearly sixty-four million Americans?

This article posits that Medicaid is vulnerable because our nation’s commitment to justice in health care remains uncertain. Historically, …

The Administration’S Medicaid Waivers: Exploding In The Guise Of Experimenting, Jane Perkins Dec 2019

The Administration’S Medicaid Waivers: Exploding In The Guise Of Experimenting, Jane Perkins

Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy

Congress enacted the Medicaid Act with the stated purpose of furnishing medical assistance to low-income people. Medicaid participation is not required of a state, but if a state does choose to participate—which they all do—the federal government will contribute the lion’s share of the cost of providing care. In return, the state agrees to pay the remaining costs of care. The state must also adhere to the detailed regulatory scheme Congress placed in the Medicaid Act, including requirements for determining eligibility for the program and the scope and affordability of coverage. Section 1115 of the Social Security Act authorizes the …

Social Work As An Important Collaborator In Transdisciplinary Public Health Law: Why Does It Matter And Where Does It Fit?, Heather A. Walter-Mccabe Dec 2019

Social Work As An Important Collaborator In Transdisciplinary Public Health Law: Why Does It Matter And Where Does It Fit?, Heather A. Walter-Mccabe

Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy

Public health law has been a growing field over the last few decades. From the early days of its initial recognition as an academic and professional field to its more recent texts and treatises, public health law is continuing to define itself. To that end, Burris et al. recently published two works describing a transdisciplinary model of public health law and five essential services of public health law.

This article examines how the inclusion of social work in the model can be instrumental in forming better public health laws. The intentional inclusion of social work collaborators would supplement legal and …

Hypothesizing A Small Opioid Mdl Settlement: An Argument For Local Public Health Action And Lessons From Big Tobacco, Ashton K. Dietrich Dec 2019

Hypothesizing A Small Opioid Mdl Settlement: An Argument For Local Public Health Action And Lessons From Big Tobacco, Ashton K. Dietrich

Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy

In response to the opioid epidemic, counties and cities across the United States waged In re: National Prescription Opiate Litigation, better known as the opioid MDL, against manufacturers and distributors of opioids. The county and city plaintiffs appear to have taken their litigation strategy straight from Big Tobacco playbook of the 1990s. This is to the great disdain of state attorneys general, who fronted Big Tobacco litigation with state-sponsored parens patriae litigation.

The state attorneys general vehemently assert that the MDL claims are the province of state governments rather than local governments. However, the attorney general-led Big Tobacco litigation …

Painfully Prescribed: Could Taking Opioids As Legal Treatment Result In Discrimination Uncovered By The Ada?, Rachael Elyse Palmer Dec 2019

Painfully Prescribed: Could Taking Opioids As Legal Treatment Result In Discrimination Uncovered By The Ada?, Rachael Elyse Palmer

Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy

Amended in 2008, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), with its sole mission to protect individuals with disabilities, is still gaping with holes in coverage due to recent court interpretations. One such interpretation is the lack of protection for patients being treated with legally prescribed medications. With widespread misconceptions about opioid use and its effects, employers take adverse action upon their employees seeking necessary treatment. This paper will discuss the harmful consequences of courts narrowly interpreting the ADA against coverage of these patients, as well as the potential revitalization of the ADA’s mission in pending actions.

Woman and Child Health

Intestinal parasites affect millions of children globally. We aimed to assess effects of deworming children on nutritional and cognitive outcomes across potential effect modifiers using individual participant data (IPD). We searched multiple databases to 27 March 2018, grey literature, and other sources. We included randomised and quasi randomised trials of deworming compared to placebo or other nutritional interventions with data on baseline infection. We used a random-effects network meta-analysis with IPD and assessed overall quality, following a pre-specified protocol. We received IPD from 19 trials of STH deworming. Overall risk of bias was low. There were no statistically significant subgroup …

Professional Practices Portfolio, Sarah Cox Dec 2019

Professional Practices Portfolio, Sarah Cox

Professional Practices (ART 399)

As human beings, we want to look away from something that makes us uncomfortable, but we can be enthralled by it. I am currently creating work about the idea of restriction and confinement, specifically addressing body image. There is an underlying theme of the attraction-repulsion concept. Confronting audiences with less than desirable imagery creates a tension between my work and viewers. Creating that relationship fuels my work and allows me to cross uncomfortable boundaries and discuss our bodies in a contemporary way.

I use charcoal and graphite to create work, occasionally with a limited but vivid color palette with soft …

"An Idolatry Of Sound" : Nature, The Natural, And The Castrato's Body In The Eighteenth Century, Caitlin Elizabeth Pala Dec 2019

"An Idolatry Of Sound" : Nature, The Natural, And The Castrato's Body In The Eighteenth Century, Caitlin Elizabeth Pala

Dissertations and Theses

The castrati--Italian men castrated before puberty in order to retain their high singing voice--were Europe's first superstars, reaching the height of their popularity in the first few decades of the eighteenth century. While only a tiny percentage of the European population, the castrati embodied many of the significant medical and philosophical questions of the Enlightenment that aimed to understand humanity: human emotion, physiology, sexuality, and culture. As a part of the ongoing debate over what was "natural," the castrati hold an interesting place. At the broadest level, the very existence of the castrati asked what it was to be a …

Differentiated Social Skills Curriculum For Aac Users, Braden Mccarty, Ann Beck, Tricia Larkin Dec 2019

Differentiated Social Skills Curriculum For Aac Users, Braden Mccarty, Ann Beck, Tricia Larkin

Graduate Independent Studies - Communication Sciences and Disorders

Communication is a basic human right. Every day, people express their ideas, emotions, wants, and needs with various conversational partners. Once young children learn to talk, social communication instruction usually does not take place in a formal setting. Children often learn appropriate means of conducting themselves in a social situation through daily interactions, a skill that continues to develop as a person ages. For individuals that require an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) device to express themselves, social communication can become a difficult task. AAC users are often individuals that have difficulty with expressive language, but there are some circumstances …

Resilience And Representations Of God Among Sri Lankan Youth, Courtney Chapin Dec 2019

Resilience And Representations Of God Among Sri Lankan Youth, Courtney Chapin

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Developing countries have unique challenges and minimal resources resulting in vulnerability to psychological distress. International research suggests youth in developing countries are often impacted by adversity. Resilience reduces the effects of adversity. Kent, Davis and Reich (2014) found representations of god(s) can serve as protective factors, mitigating the effects of hardship, or as a source of distress, contributing to psychological symptoms. The current study examined the relationship between resilience and representations of god(s) among Sri Lankan youth. The Tamil version of the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Questionnaire of God Representations, and a demographic questionnaire was administered to Tamil participants (ages 11-24) …

Food Insecurity On Wmu’S Campus: Student Satisfaction Of The Invisible Need Project, Ava Daly Dec 2019

Food Insecurity On Wmu’S Campus: Student Satisfaction Of The Invisible Need Project, Ava Daly

Honors Theses

Previous research suggests that food insecurity is higher among college students and individuals from minority populations than the general population. Many college campuses have recognized this issue and developed on-campus food pantries to mitigate food insecurity among students. Nevertheless, barriers exist that prevent students from utilizing on-campus pantries. The purpose of this study was to investigate college students’ relationship to food and food access at Western Michigan University (WMU). Student satisfaction of WMU’s on-campus food pantry, The Invisible Need Project, was also explored. Data were gathered through a 28-question online survey and one in-person focus group. Participants were undergraduate and …
