The Third Conversation: A Promising Pathway For Improving Wellbeing For Clinicians And Patients, Deborah Bren Do, Emese Sogor Mph

Department of Family Medicine

Patient-clinician relationships should be the heart of health care. But the demands of our system do not serve the traditional doctor-patient relationship well. Clinicians are burning out and leaving health care at alarming rates, with related spikes in depression and even suicide. Meanwhile, patients are talking separately about how they too feel burned by the system. The third conversation brings these groups together and gives them the space and the freedom to connect in a new way that builds empathy and appreciation for each other's humanity. The experience is designed to boost clinician and patient wellbeing. In a facilitated conversation, …

Past Management Spurs Differential Plant Communities Within A Giant Single-Clone Aspen Forest, Paul C. Rogers, Jan ŠEbesta

Ecology Center Publications

Sustainable aspen ecosystems hold great promise for global biodiversity conservation. These forests harbor relatively high species diversity, yet are threatened by fire suppression, land development, timber-focused management, extended droughts, and chronic herbivory. “Pando” is a high-profile quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) forest in Utah, USA which is putatively the ‘largest living organism on earth.’ Pando comprises an estimated 47,000 genetically identical stems, but is threatened by human impacts. Our interest in the present study is whether changes to the giant organism were affecting understorey vegetation and whether discrete zones are displaying divergent community compositions. For instance, recent research has demonstrated strong …

The Effect Of Chronic Wasting Disease On Resident Deer Hunting Permit Demand In Wisconsin, Dane Erickson, Carson Reeling, John G. Lee

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) has had a negative impact on deer license demand in Wisconsin since it was first found in the state in 2002. Prior work evaluates the effect of CWD on hunting permit sales, but only in the period immediately after the disease was discovered. We use data on hunting permit sales, permit price, and other demand shifters to estimate a model of deer permit demand for the period 1966–2015. We use the estimated model to quantify the effect of CWD on (1) hunter demand for deer permits; (2) hunter surplus from hunting; and (3) lost hunting permit …

Exposing The Imposter: Imposter Syndrome & Legal Writing Faculty, Sara L. Ochs

Events at Dickinson Law

Legal academics often report crippling feelings of insecurity and inadequacy, symptoms of a widespread trend labeled as “imposter syndrome.” Experts have defined this phenomenon as a “deep and sometimes paralyzing belief that we have been given something we didn’t earn and don’t deserve and that at some point we’ll be exposed.” Given the evident hierarchies in legal academia, these feelings are especially prominent among legal writing faculty, and even more so among those in untenured positions. Using empirical data acquired from law professors, this presentation will analyze the prevalence and causes of imposter syndrome among legal writing faculty and will …
