Understanding Assistance In Dying: Arguments In Favor Of The End Of Life Option Act, Malgorzata Hausdorff
Culture, Society, and Praxis
Abstract
There are many people in our society who are profoundly uncomfortable with the legalization of physician assistance in dying, previously known as physician - assisted suicide. The End of Life Option Act is designed to help people who are dying, who have no realistic chance for meaningful improvement of their health, and who are senselessly suffering from their condition.
There are misconceptions regarding assisting in dying is the terminology itself. Article discusses the law, as well as, clarifies the vocabulary related to the topic.
In conclusion the article raises the question: Is neglecting suffering consistent with the healers ethics?

Experiences Of Girls And Mentors With An Urban Kenyan Afterschool Support Program, Benta A. Abuya, Nelson Muhia, Peter Mokaya
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
This article explores the experiences of female mentees and their mentors in an afterschool support program in two informal urban settlements in Nairobi, Kenya. We sought the perspectives of mentees and mentors to identify what has changed concerning the education and social lives of the girls because of this education intervention. Data come from a qualitative component of the midterm survey collected in May 2014 using in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. The results show improvements in the English and math courses in which support with homework was given; girls were motivated to stay in school and had a higher …

Evaluation Of Stent And Baffle Deformation In Hybrid Comprehensive Stage Ii Procedure, Arka Das, Ray Prather, Kayla C. Livingston, Eduardo Divo, Alain J. Kassab, Michael Farias, William Decampli
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
Introduction: Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) is a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) that leads to a single ventricle circulation (SV). The existing three-stage palliative operation leads to 50% survival rates. To reduce the morbidity and mortality rate associated with the procedure, an alternative technique called Hybrid Comprehensive Stage II (HCSII) featuring the inclusion of a stent and baffle in the left and right pulmonary arteries shown is proposed. The included stent included has the potential to become fractured as a result of oscillatory asymmetric external loads.
Materials and Methods: A dynamically-scaled mock flow loop (MFL) study of HCSII shows the …

Review Of Sustainable Thinking: Ensuring Your Library’S Future In An Uncertain World, Ben Goldman
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
Sustainable Thinking: Ensuring Your Library’s Future in an Uncertain World explores strategies for how public libraries can become more sustainable organizations in a time of social and environmental disruptions. Sustainability, viewed through the lens of triple bottom line accounting, can be accomplished by understanding and prioritizing the needs of the communities that libraries serve. While not written with archives in mind, the book offers important insights for archivists, who collectively must do more to prepare for climate-driven disruptions to their work.

Leveraging Admixture In United States Minority Populations To Elucidate The Genetic Underpinnings Of Multiple Sclerosis, Ashley Harris Beecham
Leveraging Admixture In United States Minority Populations To Elucidate The Genetic Underpinnings Of Multiple Sclerosis, Ashley Harris Beecham
Open Access Dissertations
Notable progress has been made towards unraveling the genetic architecture of multiple sclerosis (MS) within ancestral European populations; with 200 confirmed variants outside of the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) explaining ~19% of the genetic predisposition to MS, and the MHC alone explaining ~20%. However, the genetics of MS in Hispanics and African Americans remains largely understudied. I proposed to examine the role of the previously confirmed non-MHC MS risk loci in United States patient populations of Hispanics and African Americans and to identify novel loci. In Hispanics, I proposed to extend these analyses; both to characterize the MHC and to …

A Female's Profession: Gender Disparity In Occupational Therapy, Jodi Collins
Honors Theses
Occupational therapy celebrated it’s one hundredth anniversary in becoming an established therapy in 2017. The history between 1917 and 2017 is rich with stories of origin, adaptation, and assimilation. The initial need of occupational therapy was to assist in rehabilitation efforts of soldiers assigned to combat in World War I, yet as history has unraveled, the need for the therapy has manifested and is now used on individuals of all ages and walks of life. Upon the initial creation of the therapy, females made up the entire field of then termed “reconstruction aides” due to the high number of males …

Mosquito-Borne Illnesses And Their Disproportionate Impact On Variant Infrastructures: A Gis Map Comparison Of Three Regions., Jenna N. Price
Honors Theses
Mosquitoes are the deadliest animals on earth and they spread diseases through their bites. Chikungunya, Dengue, Malaria, Yellow Fever, West Nile Virus, and Zika are six diseases of concern that are transmitted by mosquitoes. This honors thesis will attempt to provide relevant information and a critical analysis of current literature. Disease descriptions of the aforementioned illnesses and country evaluations for Niger, South Sudan, and the United States of America are included for comparison and evaluation. A Geographic Information System was used to create several maps comparing the three regions of the earth specified. The models are used to show country …

Detecting Tree Mortality With Landsat-Derived Spectral Indices: Improving Ecological Accuracy By Examining Uncertainty, Tucker J. Furniss, Van R. Kane, Andrew J. Larson, James A. Lutz

Satellite-derived fire severity metrics are a foundational tool used to estimate fire effects at the landscape scale. Changes in surface characteristics permit reasonably accurate delineation between burned and unburned areas, but variability in severity within burned areas is much more challenging to detect. Previous studies have relied primarily on categorical data to calibrate severity indices in terms of classification accuracy, but this approach does not readily translate into an expected amount of error in terms of actual tree mortality. We addressed this issue by examining a dataset of 40,370 geolocated trees that burned in the 2013 California Rim Fire using …

Soil carbon (C) sequestration and stabilization are determined by not only the C input to the soil but also the decomposition rate of soil organic matter (SOM), which is mainly mediated by soil microbes. Afforestation, an effective practice to restore forests from degraded or bare lands, may alter soil microbial properties, and thus soil C and nitrogen (N) dynamics. The aim of this study was to investigate the impacts of different afforestation strategies on soil microbial compositions and activities after afforestation for half a century. Soil samples were collected from two afforested sites (i.e., a restored secondary forest (RSF) and …

The Biosorption Of Lead From Aqueous Solutions By A Wood-Immobilized Fungal Biosorbent, Zomesh A N Maini, Niña Therese B. Flores, Enrico P. Muñoz
Biology Faculty Publications
Lead [Pb(II)] biosorption capacities of immobilized Talaromyces macrosporus on Moringa oleifera L. wood were compared against pure fungal and pure M. oleifera biomass. A Pb(II) contact test of 1000 ug/mL show similar Pb(II) removal of non-immobilized fungal biomass (F) and powdered wood colonized with fungi (WP+F), with WP+F producing more biomass. Powdered sorbents had higher Pb(II) uptake compared to whole sorbents analyzed through ICP-AES, possibly due to increased surface area for Pb(II) binding. FTIR analysis of the F, WP, and WP+F identified hydroxyl, amino, carbonyl, and sulfhydryl functional groups which constitute probable Pb(II)-affinitive binding sites. The biosorbents tested in a …

Objective: In sub Saharan Africa one of the key challenges in assessment using neuropsychological tools has been the lack of adequately validated and easily implementable measures. This study will translate into English, adapt and standardize the Computerized Battery for Neuropsychological Evaluation of Children (BENCI). The BENCI battery will be adapted using back-translation design, comprehensive cultural adaptation and standardized in a case–control study involving two groups of children: HIV infected and HIV unexposed, uninfected children. The content adaptation will be iteratively carried out using knowledge of English and feedback from pilot testing with children. The proposed study will first involve the …

A Single Case Study Of Sophomore College Students’ Self-Awareness And How It Relates To Teamwork At A Private College, Jeanne Thomas
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
Teamwork is considered an essential 21st-century skill and is now included in most university curricula. Working in teams helps college students learn skills such as leadership and problem-solving, that can transfer to the workplace. Effective teams are defined as those with members who communicate well and whose members possess a high degree of self-awareness (SA). SA is the primary component of Goleman’s framework of emotional intelligence (EI). A single case study was conducted at a private college in the United States to better understand how sophomore students described SA and how it relates to teamwork. The participants were sophomore …

Childhood Anxiety Disorders: A Look Into Selective Mutism, Katelyn R. Campbell Ms.
Childhood Anxiety Disorders: A Look Into Selective Mutism, Katelyn R. Campbell Ms.
Honors Theses
More than likely, a child will encounter a medical or educational professional to help them throughout their educational career sometime in their lives. Speech-language pathologists regularly see students from general education classrooms to special education classrooms. However, some disorders require multiple professionals to work as a team to ensure the child is functioning appropriately for his/her age. Selective mutism is a childhood anxiety disorder that causes such anxiety to the point where the child is unable to speak. Due to this being a frequent misdiagnosed disorder, a team of professionals is required to treat it. For this study, graduate students …
