Does Aid Really Help? The Nexus Between Development Aid And State-Society Resilience In Fragile Situations, Cyrel San Gabriel Dec 2019

Does Aid Really Help? The Nexus Between Development Aid And State-Society Resilience In Fragile Situations, Cyrel San Gabriel

Doctor of International Conflict Management Dissertations

This study aims to determine how development aid impacts state-society resilience, and how such resilience impacts aid flows in fragile situations. It particularly examines if development aid builds state-society resilience in fragile situations listed in the harmonized list of World Bank, African Development Bank, and Asian Development Bank from 2006 to 2018. Results show that development aid causes a decrease in state-society resilience, while state-society resilience causes an increase in aid flows. Aid for governance and human development weakens resilience. Better governance and peace levels curb aid flows, while higher human development levels boost aid flows. Economic growth is neither …

Continuum Belief, Categorical Belief, And Depression Stigma: Correlational Evidence And Outcomes Of An Online Intervention, Ryan Thibodeau Dec 2019

Continuum Belief, Categorical Belief, And Depression Stigma: Correlational Evidence And Outcomes Of An Online Intervention, Ryan Thibodeau

Psychology Faculty/Staff Publications

Continuum belief interventions that erode boundaries between “normal” individuals and individuals with psychiatric problems may help to reduce psychiatric stigma, but a number of questions persist. The magnitude of belief change attributable to the intervention is unclear. Moreover, most studies have executed continuum interventions to reduce stigma of schizophrenia, and all studies have examined intervention effects on only public stigma. This study utilized a large sample (n = 654) to examine effects of a continuum intervention on depression stigma—public stigma in the full sample and self-stigma among participants with a self-reported history of depression. Participants were randomly assigned to …

A Framework For Firm-Level Critical Material Supply Management And Mitigation, Gillian A. Griffin Dec 2019

A Framework For Firm-Level Critical Material Supply Management And Mitigation, Gillian A. Griffin

Theses

Organizations of all sizes are vulnerable to critical material supply disruptions. Although there is a significant body of literature that examines how large entities such as nations and governments can assess and mitigate criticality, there is very little work that addresses firm-level criticality in a way that is actionable for businesses. This work uses literature review and case study analysis to understand the impact of critical material supply risk at the firm level, and to determine salient internal indicators. A total of 42 criticality studies were reviewed and the findings were used to develop a framework to assess and monitor …

Note To Self, Chloe Renee Hayes Dec 2019

Note To Self, Chloe Renee Hayes

Theses

“note to self” is a 2D animated film completed as the thesis project for my MFA degree. This film uses experimental imagery and often abstract visual metaphor to tell a narrative story that discusses suicide, self-harm, depression, trauma, mental health, and the complicated issues surrounding these subjects.

“note to self” tells the story of a teenage girl fighting through her struggles and uncertainties in the metaphysical space of her own mind. Sienna, the protagonist, has resolved to kill herself and is working through her conflicted feelings to rationally explain why. Posed as a conversation with a part of her own …

Addressing Childhood Obesity In A Rural Community Using Motivational Interviewing, Chituru Uwaoma Dec 2019

Addressing Childhood Obesity In A Rural Community Using Motivational Interviewing, Chituru Uwaoma

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Abstract

Purpose: Childhood obesity is a significant health problem associated with increased adult morbidity and mortality. Rural areas like Central Valley California demonstrate disproportionate rates of obesity. Children in rural and underserved populations are at a higher risk of developing obesity. Data suggest that obesity is often under-addressed during routine health care visits. Primary care practitioners are the first point of health care contact and have a unique opportunity to prevent and address obesity through health monitoring and education.

In response to escalating rates of obesity, clinical recommendations have been established for primary care providers including the use of patient-centered …

Effects Of Self-Esteem, Threat Appraisal, And Coping Responses On The Somatic Components Of Illness: A Test Of A Proposed Causal Model With Professional Women, Linda Langley Moneyham Dec 2019

Effects Of Self-Esteem, Threat Appraisal, And Coping Responses On The Somatic Components Of Illness: A Test Of A Proposed Causal Model With Professional Women, Linda Langley Moneyham

Dissertations

The study was designed to test a causal model of theoretical relationships among self-esteem, threat appraisal, coping responses, and the somatic components of illness with a population of professional women. The proposed causal model was derived from Lazarus's cognitively oriented theory of psychological stress and coping. Development of a valid model of interrelations among the variables of interest would assist in the formulation of nursing interventions aimed at decreasing vulnerability to stress and stress-related illness. A correlational field investigation was conducted to test the hypothesized causal model.

Webinar: Letting Bike Riders Catch The Green Wave, Stephen Fickas, Marc Schlossberg Dec 2019

Webinar: Letting Bike Riders Catch The Green Wave, Stephen Fickas, Marc Schlossberg

TREC Webinar Series

The "Fast Track" project at the University of Oregon focuses on a mode of transportation that is sometimes left out of vehicle-to-infrastructure, or V2I, conversations: Bicycling. NITC researchers developed an app based on a new technology being integrated into modern cars: GLOSA, or Green Light Optimized Speed Advisory. GLOSA allows motorists to set their speed along corridors to maximize their chances of catching a "green wave" so they won't have to stop at red lights.

This project demonstrates how GLOSA can be used by bicyclists in the same way it is used by motorists, with a test site on a …

How Foot Voting Enhances Political Freedom, Ilya Somin Dec 2019

How Foot Voting Enhances Political Freedom, Ilya Somin

San Diego Law Review

To the extent we value political freedom in any significant sense, we should also assign a high value to foot voting. Freedom of choice through foot voting, and the freedom of movement that make it possible, cannot be absolute principles that always trump other considerations. But there should be at least a substantial presumption in their favor.

My analysis also emphasizes the fundamental similarity between three different types of foot voting that are usually considered to be very different from each other: interjurisdictional foot voting in federal systems, foot voting through international migration, and foot voting in the private sector. …

The Mechanical Development For An Autonomous Forest Service Robot, James P. Walker Dec 2019

The Mechanical Development For An Autonomous Forest Service Robot, James P. Walker

Honors College Theses

Georgia’s forests are under threat from numerous invasive species of plant, both herbaceous and woody. A primary factor in the invasive potential of any given non-native plant is the lack of natural predators and rapid reseed and regrowth cycles. To combat invasive plants, this thesis proposes an artificial, robotic predator to provide a means of controlling invasive species. Although autonomous robots are currently being developed for similar agricultural purposes, none have emerged for forestry related tasks, such as proposed in this work. The chassis, inspired by rocker bogie and similar suspension systems, has been redesigned to have eight wheels, to …

The Effects Of Premarital Education Promotion Policies On U.S. Divorce Rates, Tiffany L. Clyde, Jocelyn S. Wikle, Alan J. Hawkins, Spencer L. James

Faculty Publications

Currently, 10 states have enacted policies to promote premarital education and counseling. However, no research has documented whether these policies have actually decreased divorce rates in implementing states. The purpose of this study is to assess the effects of premarital education promotion policies on divorce rates. First, we conducted an implementation study to understand how well each state implemented the policy. A combination of methods was used, including reviewing the legislative documents and archival records, as well as interviewing academics and key persons knowledgeable of the legislation. Following the implementation study, we conducted an evaluation study to analyze the effects …

Neuroscience as a discipline is rarely covered in educational institutions in Puerto Rico. In an effort to overcome this deficit we developed the Bridge to Neuroscience Workshop (BNW), a full-day hands-on workshop in neuroscience education. BNW was conceived as an auxiliary component of a parent recruitment program called Bridge to the PhD in Neuroscience Program (BPNP). The objectives of BNW are to identify promising students for BPNP, and to increase awareness of neuroscience as a discipline and a career option. BNW introduces basic concepts in neuroscience using a variety of educational techniques, including mini-lectures, interactive discussions, case studies, experimentation, and …

From Field To Film: Mosquito Surveillance And Survey Of Us Adults' Knowledge And Attitudes Towards Arthropod-Borne Disease Vectors, Justine Laviolette Dec 2019

From Field To Film: Mosquito Surveillance And Survey Of Us Adults' Knowledge And Attitudes Towards Arthropod-Borne Disease Vectors, Justine Laviolette

Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Mosquito-borne disease is a public health challenge that warrants an active surveillance program for the identification of mosquito populations and the education of the public for prevention and protection against disease-transmitting arthropods. The communication of science to the public is necessary to prevent disease, change behavior, and promote a dialog between scientists and the public.

People are accustomed to high quality entertainment, which begs the question, “If we made science more entertaining, would the public be more interested?”

To address these issues, the objectives of this study are: 1) identify mosquito species and abundance at the US Meat Animal Research …

Penentuan Besi (Iii) Secara Voltammetri Menggunakan Elektrode Grafit Pensil, Rizki Muharami Cedia Sari, Elin Marlin, Yeni Wahyuni Hartati

Using Components Of American Sign Language To Better The Quality Of Life And Communication Access Of Elderly Persons In Assisted Living, Josie Arnett

Honors Theses

One of the most common conditions that affects people as they get older is presbycusis, the gradual loss of hearing (“Age-Related Hearing Loss”). Because of this, components of American Sign Language (ASL) were taught to elderly persons at Stillwater Senior Living assisted living facility in Edwardsville, IL with the purpose of improving access to communication. Helpful words to know in assisted living such as “want, food, hurt, and better” were taught. In addition, students were taught to feel comfortable with gestures such as pointing or thumbs up as a way to communicate. After learning how to sign certain words, students …
