Retour Et Maintien Durable En Emploi Après Un Trouble Musculosquelettique : Pistes D’Action Pour Le Superviseur, Iuliana Nastasia, Marie-France Coutu, Romain Rives, Jessica Dubé, Sarah Gaspard, Audrey Quilicot

Vaxinsight: An Artificial Intelligence System To Access Large-Scale Public Perceptions Of Vaccination From Social Media, Jingcheng Du Dec 2019

Vaxinsight: An Artificial Intelligence System To Access Large-Scale Public Perceptions Of Vaccination From Social Media, Jingcheng Du

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Vaccination is considered one of the greatest public health achievements of the 20th century. A high vaccination rate is required to reduce the prevalence and incidence of vaccine-preventable diseases. However, in the last two decades, there has been a significant and increasing number of people who refuse or delay getting vaccinated and who prohibit their children from receiving vaccinations. Importantly, under-vaccination is associated with infectious disease outbreaks. A good understanding of public perceptions regarding vaccinations is important if we are to develop effective vaccination promotion strategies. Traditional methods of research, such as surveys, suffer limitations that impede our understanding of …

Burnout, Depression And Suicide Prevention For Nursing Staff In High-Intensity Settings, April Ritchie

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Nurses working in high-intensity settings experience burnout at higher rates than in other nursing areas. Burnout in healthcare is a problem estimated as high as 70% by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Burnout can lead to depressive symptoms, which can lead to suicidal ideation in affected healthcare providers, which makes early identification and treatment of utmost importance to the mental and physical wellbeing of these nurses.

The purpose of this project is to examine burnout in nursing staff working in high-intensity areas of the hospital in order to help identify burnout and/or depressive symptoms before they lead to …

Applying The Model Of Interrelationship Environments And Outcomes To Simulation For Nurse Leaders To Enhance The Professional Practice Work Environment: Creating A Mile One Nurse Leadership Simulation Toolkit, Alicia Garcia-Cisneros

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

In nursing leadership, defining a culture of accountability is pivotal to ensure patient safety and achieve optimal patient outcomes. Nurse leaders play a significant role in transforming the professional environment, work culture, and professional behavior to deliver the highest-quality patient care. Often, nurse leaders are challenged in developing workplace environments and structures that encourage professional autonomy, advocacy, and culture climates as well as in motivating nursing staff to feel engaged. Despite an abundance of evidence underscoring the importance of staff engagement, a Gallup study revealed that only 30% of U.S. employees and 13% of employees worldwide are engaged in their …

Coaching Nurse Leaders In Conflict Management And Team Building To Improve Retention, Jeanette Black

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Abstract

Problem: Retention of assistant nurse managers (ANMs) was identified as a concern from interviews with executive leadership and ANMs employed at a large hospital within a Northern California integrated health system. The nurse leader orientation training was reviewed, with gaps identified in conflict management and team building.

Context: The attrition rate of U.S. nurse managers in 2010 was 8.3%, higher than executive nurse leaders, with replacement costs equal to 75% - 125% of a nurse manager’s salary (Loveridge, 2017). Employee turnover and dissatisfaction due to conflict can have detrimental effects on retention, productivity, morale, and quality of patient care. …

Strengthening The Advanced Practice Clinician Workforce Pipeline Through Preceptor Education And Support, Tarina Levitt-Trujillo

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Problem: The Advanced Practice Clinician (APC) workforce pipeline is dependent on clinical training opportunities. Clinician providers are encouraged to precept students but rarely are offered support tools to ensure a successful process. Lack of adequate support can result in a suboptimal outcome for the APC students.

Context: Clinician preceptors in a large healthcare organization looking to build a robust APC pipeline to support future patient populations.

Interventions: Preceptor materials were developed and delivered to clinical preceptors to help them successfully precept advanced practice clinician students during their clinical rotations. This material consisted of 20 microlearning modules to help clinicians …

Nurse Manager Succession Planning: Building A Leadership Pipeline For The Future, Katie Stephens Dec 2019

Nurse Manager Succession Planning: Building A Leadership Pipeline For The Future, Katie Stephens

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Problem. This academic medical center was increasing bed-capacity and needed to hire 12 additional nurse managers (NM) to meet these new requirements. Promoting assistant nurse managers (ANM) to the NM role saves time and money, supports leadership and cultural continuity, and demonstrates a strong organizational commitment to internal human capital.

Context. Formal nurse manager succession planning (NMSP) programs have been shown to increase nurse manager competency and retention rates, while also helping to identify and develop new generations of nurse leaders. To mitigate the recent loss of ANMs and strengthen the remaining leadership bench strength, the organization is developing, implementing, …

Trump’S Trade Policies Deflate The American Beer Industry, Megan E. Myscofski

Capstones

You can’t tell the story of the U.S. economy under President Trump without his trade policy being front and center. As a presidential candidate, he promised to shrink the trade gap. It has widened by $6 billion since his inauguration and was at $52.5 billion as of this past September.

Farmers and small business owners have been on the front lines of the trade war, and the beer industry, which is full of farmers and small business owners, the damage is evident.

Capstones

By 2030, 70% of the world’s population will live in cities.

The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has singled out 2030, too - as a date of no return on climate change.

Our future quality of life in these adopted metropolises will depend on what we do to confront climate change now.

New York has always been a city of reinvention. City on the Edge examines how New York City is restructuring its urban landscape and policies to adapt to the realities of a changing climate and mounting existential threats, from sea level rise to escalating summer …

A family of Afghan asylum seekers on the Greek island of Lesvos had found a trace of stability in their lives. They lived in a house, found jobs, were developing new skills and were even nurturing some creative vein while they waited for their asylum interview scheduled for early 2020. But all that was taken away, abruptly, when they were transferred to Athens in mid-September.

The illusive feeling of stability is something the family knows all too well.

Raziye, the mother, has been a refugee for four decades and her children their entire life. Raziye and her late husband fled …

Postpartum Pains, Lakea Youngblood

Capstones

The Academy once again came under fire. This time for banning a commercial that advertised a postpartum support. People all over the country became enraged. The Academy seemed more friendly to movies about murder than postpartum, in alignment with the sexist ideas that have been pervasive in this country since its foundations. This short documentary pushes back against this narrative and the silence around postpartum by showing the realities of it through a woman’s journey.

The film is a personal documentary about myself. After having my first child, I found myself traumatized and scarred by the pains of postpartum. Because …

Students With Mental Health Disabilities Suffer From Discrimination Across College Campuses, Abigail Nequa Napp Dec 2019

Students With Mental Health Disabilities Suffer From Discrimination Across College Campuses, Abigail Nequa Napp

Capstones

Over the course of several months, we investigated and reported on how colleges and universities have been discriminating against students with mental health disabilities. We FOIA'd the Department of Education for a history of pending and resolved cases (from 2008 - November 2019) to uncover violations committed by colleges. In several instances, institutions discriminated and punished students instead of accommodating their mental health disabilities as required by law. We also reviewed recent lawsuits involving students against universities that focused on punitive leave of absence policies as well as wrongful death suits. This revealed further inefficiencies, deficiencies and tragedy in the …

Dirty Water: the Newburgh water crisis

Summary

This project covers the ongoing water crisis in the City of Newburgh, New York. It tells the story of the contamination of the city’s drinking water by chemicals known as PFAS – short for perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances.

Valued for their resistance to water and oil, the chemicals are found in carpets, furniture, clothes, non-stick cookware, food packaging and a range of industrial products. They’re nicknamed “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down in the environment. They’re also found in fire foam, which was used at Stewart Air National Guard Base. Located …

An Analysis Of User Comfort For Wearable Devices And Their Impact On Logistical Operations, Eboni Smith Dec 2019

An Analysis Of User Comfort For Wearable Devices And Their Impact On Logistical Operations, Eboni Smith

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is comprised of three different studies researching user perception of comfort when using wearable technology. The first study investigated the use of altered smart glasses to study comfort, preference, and performance while executing common logistical order picking and shipment putting tasks. The impact of design type (weighted front, side, or back) was investigated using comfort rating scales (CRS). There was no significant difference in device preference regardless of task type. Despite the side weighted arrangement being the most comfortable, the participants still felt uncomfortable. The second study explored modifying the weights to the six dimensions of the CRS …

Implementation Of A Mentor Program To Support Nurse Retention: A Pilot Project, Lucy Camarena

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Abstract

Problem: Primary factors affecting nurses’ decisions to stay at an organization include nurse self-concept, job satisfaction, and professional growth. A high turnover rate of nurses poses a risk to patients’ safety and healthcare outcomes. The implementation of mentor programs in institutions that employ new nurses has been shown to reduce turnover rates, increase the quality of patient care, and empower nurses in professional development. The existing literature supports the use of mentor programs and encourages their implementation in healthcare institutions.

Interventions: The DNP project’s goal was to identify effective methods of promoting positive nurse self-concept and increasing job satisfaction …

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Problem: Individuals with substance use disorder (SUD) have disproportionately higher rates of unintended pregnancy when compared to the general population, estimated to be 85% (Heil et al., 2011). Not only are poor maternal and fetal outcomes associated with unplanned pregnancies, but pregnancies in women with SUD are further complicated by additional risks and adverse outcomes (Black & Day, 2016).

Context: Addiction treatment centers and programs are primed with opportunity to offer family planning services, when contact with medical providers is increased for substance use treatment. In response to the opioid crisis and unprecedented rates of unintended pregnancy, this project …

A Quality Improvement Project To Implement Shared Medical Appointments For The Management Of Type 2 Diabetes In Latino Patients, Denisse Maldonado

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Problem: Santa Rosa Community Health (SRCH) is one of the largest federally qualified health centers in Northern California, providing health care to more than 30,000 patients. More than half of the patients receiving care at the SRCH Lombardi site are Latino patients. Patients self-identify as Latino or other ethnicity on the initial health center registration form. SRCH serves 964 patients with diabetes. Due to limited access to appointments and resources, seeing a healthcare provider regularly can be difficult, posing a barrier to diabetes management. Patients with diabetes would greatly benefit from regular appointments with their primary care provider and resource …

Nursing Practice Meets Theory, Debra J. Morton Dec 2019

Nursing Practice Meets Theory, Debra J. Morton

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

These are challenging times for nurse leaders. Over the last decade, debates on healthcare reform have focused on the cost of care in the United States. This discussion has placed increasing pressure on nurse leaders to operate organizations that are more efficient, while improving quality and patient outcomes.

The practice of commanding and directive leadership has never been effective long term. Nurses want leaders to make sense of a situation and explain the why. With the growing trend toward hospital reimbursement for performance measures that are nurse-driven and informed consumers with higher expectations than ever before, it is vital …

Building The Hiv Public Health Service Structure By Quality Improvement, Graham F. Watts Sr

Florida Public Health Review

Quality improvement (QI) is a tool in the public health inventory. It has value in that it provides a modality for accelerating science-based intervention into routine public health practice. In doing so, it holds promise to make transparent how care and service systems demonstrate efficiencies in the structure, operations, and outputs that should translate into improvements in population health outcomes. One HIV health services grant in Northeast Florida touches the lives of over 4,200 persons. How to render services so that it maximally benefits all clients is ongoing work. Service recipients engage nine HIV care funded providers, who differentiate on …

Caring Science Education: The Essence Of Professional Practice For The Registered Nurse, Linda C. Ackerman

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Problem: Hospitals have moved from caring, healing environments to business or economic models of caring institutions that focus on census instead of on patients and on technology instead of on touch or human connection (Watson, 2006).

Context: As nurse leaders, we have an obligation to create an environment of authentic, professional, human caring practices within our organizations. Caring science empowers nurses to balance the art and science of clinical judgment by engaging and collaborating with the patient and their family, focusing on the needs of the whole person, honoring the unique perception of health and healing, and engaging them to …

Adopting Complex Case Management Competencies, Phyllis Stark Dec 2019

Adopting Complex Case Management Competencies, Phyllis Stark

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Improving disposition management of complex hospitalized patients is crucial to the success of acute care facilities. Most hospital patients discharge in less than 5 days, but there is a cohort of complex patients whose length of stay far-exceeds the norm (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Service Website, n.d.). Today’s case managers are focused on patients who are discharging today or tomorrow in order to keep hospital census cycling through. This phenomenon known as “throughput” drives daily operations and is a measure of success. When case managers are faced with complex patients whose length of stay measured in weeks, months, or …
