Information Extraction From Biomedical Text Using Machine Learning, Deepti Garg

Master's Projects

Inadequate drug experimental data and the use of unlicensed drugs may cause adverse drug reactions, especially in pediatric populations. Every year the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approves human prescription drugs for marketing. The labels associated with these drugs include information about clinical trials and drug response in pediatric population. In order for doctors to make an informed decision about the safety and effectiveness of these drugs for children, there is a need to analyze complex and often unstructured drug labels. In this work, first, an exploratory analysis of drug labels using a Natural Language Processing pipeline is performed. Second, …

Safety Of Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (Ercp) In Pregnancy: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Mohamed Azab, Shishira Bharadwaj, Mahendran Jayaraj, Annie S. Hong, Pejman Solaimani, Mohamad Mubder, Hyeyoung Yeom, Ji Won Yoo, Michael L. Volk

School of Medicine Faculty Research

Background/Aims: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a technically challenging procedure rarely associated with severe postprocedure complications. Hormonal changes during pregnancy promote cholelithiasis, but there are limited clinical data available on the outcomes of ERCP in pregnant women. ERCP techniques without irradiation were recently introduced as potential alternative. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the safety of ERCP in pregnancy and to compare outcomes of radiation versus nonradiation ERCP. Materials and Methods: A systematic search of PubMed, Medline/Ovid, Web of Science, and Google Scholar through April 18th, 2018 using PRISMA and MOOSE guidelines identified 27 studies reporting the …

Green Means Go: Tribes Rush To Regulate Cannabis In Indian Country, Julie Kim, Jessica Roberts

American Indian Law Journal

During the Obama administration, the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) issued a series of memos stating that the federal government would not interfere with state laws legalizing cannabis. The United States Attorney General later expressly extended this policy to Indian Country. As a result, tribes began debating potential advantages and disadvantages of participating in the cannabis market. Then, in January 2018, the DOJ rescinded the memos and publicly recommitted itself to prosecuting the possession, cultivation, and distribution of marijuana. Consequently, tribes should approach “The Green Rush” as an exercise of their sovereignty; when a tribe decides to legalize or …

􏰀Enough􏰁S Enough􏰂: Protest Law And The Tradition Of Chilling Indigenous Free Speech, Alix H. Bruce

American Indian Law Journal

Indigenous peoples in the United States were not granted the full scope of their rights as citizens under the Constitution until the enactment of the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924. Before that—and after—several state and federal campaigns worked to stifle the civil rights of Indigenous peoples. Many of those unjust and unconstitutional policies were upheld by the Supreme Court. In the current era, the anti-pipeline protests on the edge of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota sparked a new recognition of Indigenous resistance under the First Amendment—and vicious state and federal backlash against Indigenous free speech via the …

Pain And Postoperative Health-Related Quality Of Life In Inguinal Hernia Patients, Cheryl B. Rowder

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between selected variables (i.e., pain issues, hernia characteristics, and personal attributes) and postoperative health-related quality of life in inguinal hernia patients. This study identified preoperative variables predictive of lower postoperative health-related quality of life. The study entailed non-experimental retrospective analyses of variables generated during an ongoing longitudinal cooperative clinical study to examine patient outcomes after inguinal hernia repair. Fourteen Veterans Affairs Medical Centers in the continental United States participated in the study. Data were collected from eligible participants upon entry into the project and at 3 months post-surgery. The sample …

In Broken Places, Judith Katherine Spradling

Theses and Dissertations

Constructed from a series of oral histories, the story of Andrea and Grant Jacks allows the audience a unique insight into the struggle of fulfilling the desire to parent. Often painful, this project looks at the diagnosis from both male and female perspectives following a couple’s journey through diagnosis, surgery, and treatment along with the emotional turmoil of dealing with devastating news and loss. This project does not seek to create sympathy for infertile couples but to educate, bring awareness, and offer understanding. The intent of thesis seeks to provide insight and understanding as a basis of support for family, …

Nurses' Negotiation Processes In Facilitating Ethical Decision-Making In Patient Care, Teresa A. Savage Dec 2019

Nurses' Negotiation Processes In Facilitating Ethical Decision-Making In Patient Care, Teresa A. Savage

Dissertations

The literature on ethical decision-making by nurses presents both prescriptive and descriptive decision-making models. The processes nurses use to move through the step-wise models has not been described. An atheoretical approach was taken using naturalistic inquiry methodology to explore the processes further. Eighteen nurses working in a Midwest, urban academic medical center were interviewed. The major themes focused on the moral agency of nurses and the processes by which nurses accomplish their objectives for their patients. Physician-nurse relationships and their interactions were critical in the expression of moral agency of the nurses. The main finding in the study was that …

A Self-Marker-Like Protein Governs Hemocyte Allorecognition In Halocynthia Roretzi, Masaki Ema, Taizo Okada, Miki Takahashi, Masato Uchiyama, Hideo Kubo, Hideaki Moriyama, Hitoshi Miyakawa, Midori Matsumoto

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Background: Self-incompatibility, fusion/non-fusion reactions, and contact reactions (CRs) have all been identified as allorecognition phenomena in ascidians. CR is a reaction characteristic of the hemocytes of Halocynthia roretzi, whereby they release phenol oxidase (PO) upon contact with non-self hemocytes. Thus, these cells may represent a primitive form of the vertebrate immune system. In the present study, we focused on the CR of H. roretzi hemocytes and sought to identify self-marker proteins that distinguish between self and non-self cells.

Results: We initially generated a CR-inducing monoclonal antibody against the complete hemocyte membraneprotein complement (mAb11B16B10). This antibody was identified based on the …

Treatment Of Dental Complications In Sickle Cell Disease., Priti Mulimani, Samir K. Ballas, Adinegara Bl Abas, Laxminarayan Karanth

Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease is the most common single gene disorder and the commonest haemoglobinopathy found with high prevalence in many populations across the world. Management of dental complications in people with sickle cell disease requires special consideration for three main reasons. Firstly, dental and oral tissues are affected by the blood disorder resulting in several oro-facial abnormalities. Secondly, living with a haemoglobinopathy and coping with its associated serious consequences may result in individuals neglecting their oral health care. Finally, the treatment of these oral complications must be adapted to the systemic condition and special needs of these individuals, in …

Nothing Is Over: Ftca Claims For Toxic Torts On Native Lands, Jessica Ditmore Dec 2019

Nothing Is Over: Ftca Claims For Toxic Torts On Native Lands, Jessica Ditmore

American Indian Law Journal

In 1976, Congress passed the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (“RCRA”) to curtail the growing problem of disposing of hazardous waste and toxic substances generally. Decades prior, Congress established the Federal Tort Claims Act (“FTCA”) to hold the federal Government liable for tortious conduct the same way a private citizen would be. The federal government assumed the responsibility to ensure the wellbeing of Native Nations (“NN”). This is commonly referred to the “Trust Doctrine.” This duty stems from the settlement of Native American lands, and a recognition of the treaties entered into by the United States with a “moral [obligation] …

The Nature Of Domestic Demand For Authentic Ethnic Experiences In Egypt: Exploring Egyptian Visitors’ Perspectives And Assessments Of Bedouin Cultural Attractions, Ahmed Abdel Latif Abdelfattah Dr., Mary E. Eddy U Dec 2019

The Nature Of Domestic Demand For Authentic Ethnic Experiences In Egypt: Exploring Egyptian Visitors’ Perspectives And Assessments Of Bedouin Cultural Attractions, Ahmed Abdel Latif Abdelfattah Dr., Mary E. Eddy U

The Qualitative Report

Much emphasis in the literature on Bedouin tourism in the Arab world has been given to the demands, perceptions, motivations and experiences of international tourists while domestic demands are not fully understood. Thus, this study challenges the status quo, being one of a few studies in which Egyptians are represented as tourists consuming Egyptian ethnic culture. A mix of qualitative research methods, including 29 semi-structured interviews with domestic visitors, observational data and document analysis, was employed to explore Egyptian visitors’ perspectives and assessments of Bedouin cultural attractions in Egypt. The findings revealed that the concept of experiencing existential authenticity through …

The Role Of Glia In Epilepsy, Intellectual Disability, And Other Neurodevelopmental Disorders In Tuberous Sclerosis Complex, Michael Wong Dec 2019

The Role Of Glia In Epilepsy, Intellectual Disability, And Other Neurodevelopmental Disorders In Tuberous Sclerosis Complex, Michael Wong

Open Access Publications

BACKGROUND: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a genetic disorder characterized by severe neurological manifestations, including epilepsy, intellectual disability, autism, and a range of other behavioral and psychiatric symptoms, collectively referred to as TSC-associated neuropsychiatric disorders (TAND). Various tumors and hamartomas affecting different organs are the pathological hallmarks of the disease, especially cortical tubers of the brain, but specific cellular and molecular abnormalities, such as involving the mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway, have been identified that also cause or contribute to neurological manifestations of TSC independent of gross structural lesions. In particular, while neurons are immediate mediators of neurological symptoms, …

Skype In Qualitative Interviews: Participant And Researcher Perspectives, Rebecca G. Mirick, Stephanie P. Wladkowski

The Qualitative Report

As Internet usage has increased, web-based technologies such as Skype and Face Time have become more common alternatives for qualitative interviewing, especially for research participants who are geographically distant from the researchers. Challenges to the use of these tools have been identified, but as technology is currently changing at a rapid pace, more recent research is needed to provide up-to-date information on the feasibility of web and video conferencing technologies for qualitative interviewing. This paper reflects on the experience of using Skype for qualitative research interviews (n=14) in a study of pregnancy and parenting in doctoral programs, including feedback from …

Something For Everyone: A Review Of Qualitative Inquiry And Research Design: Choosing Among Five Approaches, Cecilia Tarnoki, Katheryne Puentes

The Qualitative Report

Qualitative Inquiry and Research Design: Choosing Among Five Approaches (2018), by John W. Creswell and Cheryl N. Poth was written for anyone who is considering themselves to be researchers or interested in learning more about qualitative research. As students in doctoral programs studying family therapy at Nova Southeastern University, we felt that parts of the text were explicitly tailored toward the social sciences; however, the chapters are useful for anyone interested in qualitative research from many angles and aspects.

Nyc Is A Hotspot For Bedsores Among The Elderly And Immobile, Kara J. Brown Dec 2019

Nyc Is A Hotspot For Bedsores Among The Elderly And Immobile, Kara J. Brown

Capstones

New York City is a hotspot for bedsores in nursing homes, according to data provided by the federal government. The Big Apple is home to nine of the 10 nursing homes in the state with the highest rates of long-stay, high-risk patients suffering from bedsores. Nationwide, those 10 nursing homes are among the worst in the nation—the top 2%—for their high bedsore rates, the data shows. Residents considered high risk are, according to Medicare, those who are impaired in bed mobility or transfer, who are comatose, or who suffer from malnutrition.

More than one out of every four residents at …

The patient didn’t attract any attention initially. They were just one more cog moving through the system that was the massive hospital complex on your average day. That was, until they were shown to a room, and left alone. At that point, they removed a flash drive from their pocket and tried to insert it into a computer — with the goal of accessing the hospitals computer systems.

This is according to the Chief Information Security Officer at a major Northwest university hospital system, who asked for anonymity due to the sensitive nature of such attacks.

More Than A Century After Problem Emerged, Manhole Explosions Still Injuring Dozens In New York City, Gaspard Le Dem, Gabriel Sandoval

Capstones

Since the early days of electrification, New York City has been rattled by manhole explosions –– underground blasts that injure residents, damage buildings, force evacuations, cause power outages and traffic disruptions.

Consolidated Edison, the city's largest electric provider, has for decades blamed manhole issues on bad weather and road salt that erodes underground wires. But some experts and former utility workers say lack of maintenance is at the root of the problem.

Meanwhile, city and state officials have failed to rein in the problem through weak laws and loose oversight. As a result, unsuspecting drivers and pedestrians continue to be …
