Reconstructing Greek Identity And Exploring The Self: The Early Works Of Yiannis Tsarouchis (1910-1989), Anna Wichmann Jan 2019

Reconstructing Greek Identity And Exploring The Self: The Early Works Of Yiannis Tsarouchis (1910-1989), Anna Wichmann

Theses & ETDs

While the early works of Yiannis Tsarouchis were painted in the style of Matisse, it is clear that Tsarouchis cannot be framed as “the Greek Matisse,” or as an artist who simply wished to copy Matisse. By establishing his artistic development before encountering Matisse’s work, and charting the deliberate alterations he made to Matisse’s model, I will show that Tsarouchis used Matisse’s work as a mode through which to explore Greek identity as syncretic and multilayered. Greekness, to Tsarouchis, contains visible layers of historical and cultural periods on the same plane. These individual layers maintain their distinction between each other …

How To Make Gold And Other Impossible Things: Examining Alchemy In Greco-Roman Egypt, Virginia Lewis Jan 2019

How To Make Gold And Other Impossible Things: Examining Alchemy In Greco-Roman Egypt, Virginia Lewis

Theses & ETDs

How to Make Gold and Other Impossible Things: Examining Alchemy in Greco-Roman Egypt seeks to understand alchemy in Greco-Roman Egypt through an examination of the historical context of the alchemists and alchemical philosophy as well as translations of alchemical texts. The process also involved performing chemistry experiments in order to understand further the types of experiments ancient alchemists could have performed and the types of reactions they may have observed, expanding the understanding of ancient alchemy even further.

Ela And Esl Educators’ Lived Experiences In Urban, Middle Level, Mainstream Classrooms, Georgia Danos Jan 2019

Ela And Esl Educators’ Lived Experiences In Urban, Middle Level, Mainstream Classrooms, Georgia Danos

Masters Theses

This ethnographic qualitative study explores best practices for English Language Learning (ELL) students by analyzing one particular co-taught 8th grade English Language Arts (ELA) classroom where students received instruction from both a trained ELA teacher and one certified in English as a Second Language (ESL). The results suggest that the ELA mainstream teacher, Mr. Scott, was disengaged in class; disinterested in his students; unaware of his students’ backgrounds and needs; unaware of professional development offered; resistant and resentful towards new pedagogical approaches; tentatively interested in but unaware of best practices; displayed unprofessionalism; and indifferent about students' academic success. The ESL …

Race In The Galactic Age : Sankofa, Afrofuturism, Whiteness And Whitley Strieber, Clifton Zeno Johnson Jan 2019

Race In The Galactic Age : Sankofa, Afrofuturism, Whiteness And Whitley Strieber, Clifton Zeno Johnson

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Octavia Butler asked if black skin was so disruptive a force that the mere presence of it alters a story? In a post-colonial era, skin color remains a polarizing topic. While humans are still redefining perceptions about race, people across planet earth are opening up to the possibility of the existence of intelligent extraterrestrial life. This paper explores how the acknowledgment of a galactic presence would transform perceptions of whiteness. The experiences of the best-selling author and proclaimed contactee, Whitley Strieber, are used as case studies to analyze if Amero-European ingrained bias toward melanin would influence the western world’s interactions …

Being And Structure In Plato’S Sophist, Colin C. Smith Jan 2019

Being And Structure In Plato’S Sophist, Colin C. Smith

Theses and Dissertations--Philosophy

Being and Structure in Plato’s Sophist is a study of the metaphysical notion of being as it is at play in Plato’s dialogue the Sophist, and the senses in which Plato’s conception of being entails further accounts of ontological structure and goodness. While modern metaphysics primarily concerns existence, ancient metaphysics primarily concerns what grounds what, and in this dissertation I consider the nature and value of Plato’s understanding of being as a notion of ground rather than a principle of existence. I argue that Plato conceives of being in the fundamentally unified sense of participation, which entails a self-and-other …

Gothic Identity And The ‘Othering’ Of Jews In Seventh-Century Spain, Erica Buchberger Jan 2019

Gothic Identity And The ‘Othering’ Of Jews In Seventh-Century Spain, Erica Buchberger

History Faculty Publications

In 589, Reccared, king of the Visigoths in Spain, converted from Arian to Catholic Christianity. Arianism was banned, and after a brief period which saw the repression of rebellions, eliminated from the kingdom. All Goths were required to become Catholic. This watershed in Visigothic history both necessitated and facilitated a renegotiation of the parameters of Gothic identity. The entire kingdom was affected: the ruling Visigoths, the small population of recently conquered Sueves, and the Hispano-Romans who were left under the rule of the Goths when the Western Roman Empire fell apart.[1] This Roman population also included some Jews. While …

Personality Of The Holy Spirit: A Biblical, Historical, And Theological Investigation, Christopher R. Mwashinga Jan 2019

Personality Of The Holy Spirit: A Biblical, Historical, And Theological Investigation, Christopher R. Mwashinga

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

Down through the history of the Christian church, people have held different views about the personality of the Holy Spirit. 1 Some view Him as the personification of holy power in the same sense that they view Satan as the personification of evil power, and they conclude that neither Satan nor the Holy Spirit is a personal being. 2 Others see the Holy Spirit as the energy of God, an impersonal power God uses to activate His will in the universe, 3 and still others maintain that the Holy Spirit is a person and that He was active with the …

Ministering To Youth And Young Adults Through A Sports Initiative In The Normandie Avenue Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Michael S. Jenkins Jr. Jan 2019

Ministering To Youth And Young Adults Through A Sports Initiative In The Normandie Avenue Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Michael S. Jenkins Jr.

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The Normandie Avenue Seventh-day Adventist church is centrally located among other nearby Seventh-day Adventist churches in south Los Angeles, California. The presence of youth and young adults in worship services has diminished. Ministry participation among this group at Normandie has also diminished. Adventist and non-Adventist youth and young adults are not being attracted to the church or its ministries. Youth and young adults who do attend worship service and or participate in ministries do not have a strong relationship with the pastor or other spiritual figures. A 2008 study shows the median age of Adventist congregations is 51 while …

Thermal Characterization Of Abs/Carbon Fiber, Abs/ Glass Fiber And Petg/Glass Fiber Reinforced Composites Used In Large Area Additive Manufacturing, Fernando Adrian Rodriguez Lorenzana Jan 2019

Thermal Characterization Of Abs/Carbon Fiber, Abs/ Glass Fiber And Petg/Glass Fiber Reinforced Composites Used In Large Area Additive Manufacturing, Fernando Adrian Rodriguez Lorenzana

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Additive manufacturing has seen continuous advancements, such as the inclusion of large-area additive manufacturing extrusion systems. These systems precede small-scale 3D printing by means of research and technological development for the manufacturing of plastic and fiber industries. Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM), a material extrusion process, is capable of 3D printing large parts using thermoplastic composites by adding fiber reinforcements. The incorporation of fibrous materials, carbon fiber (CF) or glass fiber (GF), is a common practice in which percentage nominal ratios of fiber reinforcement by weight are implemented to the polymer matrix. In general, this enables warpage reduction during printing, …

Love And Servant-Leadership, Tom Buck Jan 2019

Love And Servant-Leadership, Tom Buck

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Parker Palmer (2000) described the world as a mixture of both shadow and light. On a grand scale, the interplay of shadow and light can be witnessed both in wars and the giving of humanitarian aid across the globe. This exchange of shadow and light can also be experienced in local communities through the existence of poverty and depression, as well as volunteerism and charitable giving. While there are examples of famous leaders who inspired large movements towards great change, these leaders are famous and notable precisely because they are the exception, rather than the rule. Most leaders will not …
