Using Social Network Analysis To Assess Professional Network Development Among AgeSw Pre-Dissertation Fellowship Program Participants, Rebecca L. Mauldin, Jennifer C. Greenfield, Nancy Kusmal, Noelle L. Fields, Staphanie P. Wladkowski, Allison Gibson

Social Work Faculty Publications

Professional networks are important for the success of doctoral students and early career faculty members, yet there is little research about what types of experiences help emerging scholars develop these networks. Social network analysis may be an ideal method for studying the effectiveness of training programs in nurturing network development among emerging scholars. We describe one application of this method, which was used to examine the professional networks formed through participation in the Association of Gerontological Education in Social Work (AGESW)’s Pre-Dissertation Fellowship Program (PDFP). Alumni (n = 12) from the first three cohorts of the program (2010–2012) reported …

Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy For Existential Suffering: Facilitating Self-Transcendence At The End-Of-Life, Kevin O. St. Arnaud Jan 2019

Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy For Existential Suffering: Facilitating Self-Transcendence At The End-Of-Life, Kevin O. St. Arnaud

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

Although existential suffering is amongst the most devastating forms of distress experienced by many patients nearing the end-of-life, it is often unsatisfactorily addressed due to a paucity of effective interventions. However, both historic and recent studies of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy have reported marked alleviation of this suffering. As such, this article seeks to advance the rationale for the use of psychedelic substances in the provision of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy for patients nearing the end-of-life. It begins with an overview of the classic psychedelics and their application in psychotherapy, highlighting recent studies. This is followed with a conceptual overview of existential suffering at …

Somatics Research Bibliography: A Working Tool For Somatics And Somatic Psychology, Eleanor Criswell Hanna Jan 2019

Somatics Research Bibliography: A Working Tool For Somatics And Somatic Psychology, Eleanor Criswell Hanna

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

Many years ago when Somatics magazine was young, it occurred to me that it would be valuable to collect and publish research article references in Somatics magazine that were relevant to the different somatics disciplines to encourage the development of the field. There were next to no studies devoted to Somatics itself, but there were many studies devoted to the elements of somatic practices. Somatics is a multidisciplinary field. It builds on the research findings from many fields, such as anatomy, physiology, neurophysiology, psychology, dance, biomechanics, and education. The references are selected to be suggestive to the interested researcher and …

Rebooting Empathy For The Digital Generation Lawyer, Lauren A. Newell Jan 2019

Rebooting Empathy For The Digital Generation Lawyer, Lauren A. Newell

Law Faculty Scholarship

There is a growing preference in today’s technology-saturated society for online interaction via email, text messages, social networks, and instant messaging, rather than real-world interaction through face-to-face or telephonic conversations. For today’s young people—the Digital Generation—this is more than a mere preference; it is a way of life. Research indicates that the movement toward virtual communication comes with negative consequences, such as poor real-world communication skills and underdeveloped social skills. Most significantly, research suggests that the Digital Generation are less empathic than elder generations are. Some researchers speculate that the rising prominence of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in everyday …

Cytochrome c (cytc) is a multifunctional protein, acting as an electron carrier in the electron transport chain (ETC), where it shuttles electrons from bc1 complex to cytochrome c oxidase (COX), and as a trigger of type II apoptosis when released from the mitochondria. We previously showed that cytc is regulated in a highly tissue-specific manner: Cytc isolated from heart, liver, and kidney is phosphorylated on Y97, Y48, and T28, respectively. Here, we have analyzed the effect of a new Cytc phosphorylation site, threonine 58, which we mapped in rat kidney Cytc by mass spectrometry. We generated and overexpressed wild-type, phosphomimetic …

Ending Family Homelessness In Ada County, Idaho 2019, Lantz Mcginnis-Brown, Mcallister Hall, Ana Costa, Vanessa Fry, Benjamin Larsen

Idaho Policy Institute Reports

  • What interventions are most suitable for preventing family homelessness?
  • What is the gap between current capacities of housing and homelessness services and the service capacity needed to end family homelessness in Ada County?
  • What are the programmatic costs of ending family homelessness in Ada County?

To answer these questions, Boise State University’s Idaho Policy Institute (IPI) conducted a literature review of homelessness prevention services as well as an analysis of Ada County’s Coordinated Entry System (CES). Research included tracking households with children through the CES, assessing their referral into programs and determining costs associated with placement into housing.

© The Author(s) 2019. Long noncoding RNAs are capable of regulating gene expression at multiple levels. These RNA molecules are also involved in a variety of physiological and pathological processes. Emerging data demonstrate that a series of differentially expressed long noncoding RNAs are implicated in tumorigenesis. In the present study, we used microarray analysis to identify long noncoding RNAs that are dysregulated in non-small-cell lung cancer when compared to normal lung tissues. Accordingly, we performed quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction to analyze the levels of long noncoding RNA and the cis target gene. We further found the oncogene property of …

Is There A Relationship Between Profession And Assessment Of Interprofessional Collaboration In Ipe?, Kelly Lockeman Jan 2019

Is There A Relationship Between Profession And Assessment Of Interprofessional Collaboration In Ipe?, Kelly Lockeman

Health Sciences Education Symposium

Purpose: Interprofessional education (IPE) seeks to train students to collaborate across professions, but assessing interprofessional competency is challenging (Blue, 2015). Because faculty variation may be one barrier, this study explores grading patterns to determine whether there is variation between faculty and whether professional differences impact this variation.

Blue Zones And Longevity, Edward F. Ansello

Director's Editorials from Age in Action

We can embrace the generalizable characteristics of Blue Zones: a plant-based diet, friendships, spiritual or religious grounding, awareness of and immersion in our community, physical activity as a regular, normalized part of our daily routine, and, more philosophically, an opening up to our own sense of place and purpose.

Synthesis Of The Literature: Variables Influencing Caregiver Use Or Nonuse Of Supportive Services, Kristina M. Childers Jan 2019

Synthesis Of The Literature: Variables Influencing Caregiver Use Or Nonuse Of Supportive Services, Kristina M. Childers

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Two out of three caregivers (CGs) of persons with dementia (PWD) living in the community do not use supportive services or resources, and three out of four underutilize available support. These findings are troubling because CGs report many unmet needs in providing support to PWD. What predisposing, enabling, and need variables influence CGs to use or not use support services are poorly understood. This article reviews the literature on CG of PWD to find characteristic variables that are related to CG's decisions to use or not use support services. Instruments used in research studies were named to determine recommendations for …
