The Effect Of Perceived Level Of Social Support On The Fear Of Falling, Kali A. Todd Apr 2019

The Effect Of Perceived Level Of Social Support On The Fear Of Falling, Kali A. Todd

Honors College Theses

Background: Perhaps the most prevalent cause of anxiety among the elderly is the fear of falling (FOF), considering that a fall can lead to serious complications and the decline of health. Kumar et al. found that subjects with a FOF usually have less social support. Therefore, increased social support could possibly decrease the FOF, thus decreasing the likelihood of a fall overall. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the amount of perceived social support one receives and the FOF among people ages 60 and up. Methods: In order to measure FOF and social support among …

Walking speed tests are powerful health screening tools, but variation in protocols present different diagnostic cutoffs. What distance for a gait speed test validly represents overall gait speed is unknown. To determine the optimal testing distance that represents overall gait speed. Vitals and measurements were taken from participants and were instructed to walk at their normal gait speed for 20m through Brower timing gates at every 5m. Speeds from 0-5m, 5-10m, and 10-20m were compared using a mixed effect model. The average speed for 0-5m segment was 1.361 m/s, 5-10m was 1.449 m/s, and the 10-20m average speed was 1.467 …

The Effects Of Multitasking On Motor Performance, Maria Tri Apr 2019

The Effects Of Multitasking On Motor Performance, Maria Tri

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)

This study investigated whether multitasking would have an effect on motor performance. Specifically, I observed undergraduate students from a midwestern liberal arts college—College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University. In past research, Schwebel, McClure, & Porter (2017) had observed various college students about distracted pedestrian behavior on their college campus. Their results found changes in self-reports about their intentions, but not a specific behavior change. The undergraduates that participated in this study (N = 20) were assigned to two conditions by block randomization. Then they were given the task to walk down and back up a flight of stairs …

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)

The Implementation of Non-Pharmacological Pain Management Interventions to Decrease Pharmacological Need in a Long-Term Care Facility: a Quality Improvement Study

Effective pain management is a universal issue throughout the healthcare field, especially in long-term care. The increasing older adult population, coupled with chronic under-staffing, produces an environment that inhibits efforts to treat chronic pain and acute pain flares that are often present in this patient population. In response to an increasing demand for improved pain treatment, research has focused on locating and testing the efficacy of many non-pharmacological pain management techniques. These techniques include healing touch, music therapy, cold/heat application, …

Housing Dynamics Of Older Americans In The 21st Century, Tim Murray Apr 2019

Housing Dynamics Of Older Americans In The 21st Century, Tim Murray

Doctoral Dissertations

The Life-Cycle Hypothesis suggests that households save during their working years and then draw down those savings in retirement. Housing equity constitutes a large portion of most retiree’s savings portfolios, yet older households are not using their accumulated housing equity to help increase consumption in retirement and often die with large sums of housing equity. This dissertation explores housing equity use by older Americas in three ways. Chapter 1 looks at homeownership and moving rates of older Americans and how having a guaranteed source of income from a defined benefit plan may have mitigated some of the effects of the …

The Impact Of Power Training On Balance And Visual Feedback Removal, Juliana Bouton Apr 2019

The Impact Of Power Training On Balance And Visual Feedback Removal, Juliana Bouton

Senior Honors Theses

Because power training has been known to augment stability, the purpose of this study was to assess whether the removal of visual input affects lower limb muscle power production in young women who are resistance trained to the same degree it affects the untrained. This provided insight as far as the need for resistance training protocols in a largely untrained visually impaired population. To study this, fourteen college-aged female participants (18-23 years) performed a seated double-leg press on a leg sled machine, isolating power production of the lower limbs. After establishing baselines, which involved finding an average of power produced …

Aging And Identity In The Landscape Of The Mega-Casino, Joy Ciofi Apr 2019

Aging And Identity In The Landscape Of The Mega-Casino, Joy Ciofi

Doctoral Dissertations

Casino gambling is becoming an increasingly popular activity among retirees in the surrounding communities. This project presents the results of two years of ethnographic fieldwork (2015-2017) with senior gamblers who regularly visit two of the United States’ largest mega-casino complexes. Although this form of recreation has generated significant public concern, I argue that the overwhelming majority of older adult gamblers do so responsibly, and also receive many benefits from their casino experiences. The abundance and variety of activities within these massive, all-inclusive facilities provides elderly and retired guests with the opportunity to make plans, socialize, and stay mentally and physically …

Response Inhibition And Reactive Balance In Older Adults, Derek England Apr 2019

Response Inhibition And Reactive Balance In Older Adults, Derek England

Student Research Symposium

Response inhibition involves stopping undesired and automatic actions allowing for behavioral flexibility. This ability is theoretically able to contribute to fall prevention, which older adults are known to have difficulty with. Although much has been learned from cognitive psychology regarding response inhibition, translation to the challenge of balance recovery is unclear. Recently a correlation has been found between performance on a standard test of response inhibition called the Stop Signal Task (SST) and a balance test that required inhibition of a reactive step in young adults. This highlights a neural mechanism for stopping action across different behavioral contexts in young …

Explication Of The Meaning Of Reminiscence For The Elderly Living In The Community, Roberta Claire Cavendish Apr 2019

Explication Of The Meaning Of Reminiscence For The Elderly Living In The Community, Roberta Claire Cavendish

Dissertations

Human beings have the distinct capacity to reminisce. Reminiscence is a function of memory and memories are autobiographical. Studying memory expanded an understanding of the phenomenon. Although reminiscence occurs in all age groups, special significance has been attributed to its meaning in this population. This area has yet to be studied. Using a semi-structured interview technique, eight participants, six females and two males were asked to describe reminiscing. The data were analyzed using a qualitative methodology.

Trunk Muscle Activation During Dynamic Sling Training Exercises, Tobias Morat, Denis Holzer, Rieke Trumpf Apr 2019

Trunk Muscle Activation During Dynamic Sling Training Exercises, Tobias Morat, Denis Holzer, Rieke Trumpf

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 12(1): 590-601, 2019. The purpose of this study was to examine the level of trunk muscle activation to characterize different dynamic sling training exercises. Thirty-six young adults (25±3 years, 1.78±0.1 m, 71.5±10.4 kg) performed six different sling training exercises while muscle activation of eight different trunk muscles was measured unilaterally by surface electrodes. Four of the exercises were conducted at two different difficulty levels (an easy and a hard version) by changing the body angle. The six sling training exercises differed regarding muscle activation, with significant differences (p< 0.05) between the three body parts (front, side, back). High muscle activations (76-87%) of the (front) trunk flexor muscles were measured. The back muscles tested reached more than half of their peak reference trial values only during one exercise tested. Regarding the side muscles, three of the sling exercises achieved muscle activations of 60% and higher (66-92%). All eight trunk muscles tested demonstrated a significantly (p< 0.05) higher muscle activation in the harder version compared with the easy version. Based on the results, the sling training exercises tested in this study seem to be most effective for the abdominal muscles. As assumed based on the former literature, changing the body angle during sling training exercises is shown to be a feasible way of adjusting the intensity of sling training. This could potentially be used in longitudinal sling training studies to assure a controlled, progressively increasing training intervention.
