Usable Science For Managing The Risks Of Sea-Level Rise, Robert E. Kopp, Elisabeth A. Gilmore, Christopher M. Little, Jorge Lorenzo-Trueba, Victoria C. Ramenzoni, William V. Sweet
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Sea-level rise sits at the frontier of usable climate climate change research, because it involves natural and human systems with long lags, irreversible losses, and deep uncertainty. For example, many of the measures to adapt to sea-level rise involve infrastructure and land-use decisions, which can have multigenerational lifetimes and will further influence responses in both natural and human systems. Thus, sea-level science has increasingly grappled with the implications of (1) deep uncertainty in future climate system projections, particularly of human emissions and ice sheet dynamics; (2) the overlay of slow trends and high-frequency variability (e.g., tides and storms) that give …

Trans + Languaging: Beyond Dual Language Bilingual Education, Cristian R. Solorza
Trans + Languaging: Beyond Dual Language Bilingual Education, Cristian R. Solorza
Journal of Multilingual Education Research
Ofelia García calls for a re-imagining of bilingual education by challenging how teachers conceptualize, facilitate, and listen to language use in classrooms. Educators attempt to legitimize students' authentic, fluid, and dynamic language practices through translanguaging, but non-standard named language varieties are still marginalized in classrooms. Using the prefix trans+, García pushes us to look beyond bilingual education to critically challenge hegemonic language ideologies and to break from the monoglossic status quo within dual language bilingual education. Bilingual educators are tasked with envisioning language pedagogies that keep our emergent bilingual students whole, as they learn to leverage and expand their …

Effect Of Student Teams-Achievement Divisions And Think–Pair–Share On Students’ Interest In Reading Comprehension, Eucharia Okwudilichukwu Ugwu
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
The study investigated the effect of two cooperative learning strategies (the student teams-achievement divisions and think–pair–share methods) on students’ interest in reading comprehension. Seventy-eight senior secondary II students were randomly selected from three schools in Vandeikya Local Government Area, Benue State, Nigeria. A pretest–posttest quasi-experimental design was adopted. The Interest in Reading Inventory (R = 0.09) was the instrument used. Two hypotheses were tested at .05 levels of significance. Three intact classes were randomly assigned as Experimental Group 1, Experimental Group 2, and the control group. The data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation, and analysis of …

Returning To Nature: Environmental History's Posthuman Direction, William H. Smith Iii
Theses and Dissertations
The purposes of this thesis were to (A) determine a new historiographical direction for environmental history through analyzing posthuman environmental change, (B) to present a new historical analysis of posthumanity, reinforced by scholarly accomplishes with the anthropocene, that allows the historian to discuss environmental history with humanity as a secondary character, and (C) to show how both the historiography of environmental history, as well as specific case studies of climate, infestations, and natural disasters, are able to present this new direction for environmental history. What has been the end result is that humanity will always improve their condition of sustainability, …
Next Year In Jerusalem: Exile And Return In Jewish History, Leonard Greenspoon
Next Year In Jerusalem: Exile And Return In Jewish History, Leonard Greenspoon
Studies in Jewish Civilization
Next Year in Jerusalem recognizes that Jews have often experienced or imaged periods of exile and return in their long tradition. The fourteen papers in this collection examine this phenomenon from different approaches, genres, and media. They cover the period from biblical times through today. Among the exiles highlighted are the Babylonian Exile (sixth century BCE), the exile after the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple (70 CE), and the years after the Crusaders (tenth century CE). Events of return include the aftermath of the Babylonian Exile (fifth century BCE), the centuries after the Temple’s destruction (first and second CE), and …

A Financial Inclusion Index For Indonesia, Hilman Hanivan, Nasrudin Nasrudin
A Financial Inclusion Index For Indonesia, Hilman Hanivan, Nasrudin Nasrudin
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
Numerous studies have constructed financial inclusion indexes for Indonesia, using amultidimensional approach. However, there is a problem with the methodology, whichassumes that all the dimensions play the same role in defining financial inclusion, since they are based on equal weighting criteria. This paper aims to obviate concernswith the methodology by developing a more empirically based index, namely, aweighted multidimensional index of financial inclusion based on two-stage principalcomponent analysis. In other words, we endogenize the weights. We find that usage isthe most important dimension in defining financial inclusion in Indonesia, followedby availability and access.

Pregnant And Scared: How Nifla V. Becerra Avoids Protecting Women’S Reproductive Autonomy, Savannah R. Montanez
San Diego Law Review
This Note analyzes the Court’s determination that the Licensed Notice did not fit into either exception. Part II of this Note provides a brief overview of CPCs and how the FACT Act was designed to curb CPCs’ interference with women’s reproductive autonomy. Part III discusses the litigation between NIFLA, the CPCs, and California, culminating in a controversial 5–4 decision in the Supreme Court. Next, Part IV argues that even if the Court wanted to limit the circumstances wherein professional speech received diminished scrutiny, it could have fit the Licensed Notice into its newly-delineated exceptions. This Note ultimately questions why the …
Brachiopod Shell Thickness Links Environment And Evolution, U Balthasar, J Jin, L Hints, M Cusack
Brachiopod Shell Thickness Links Environment And Evolution, U Balthasar, J Jin, L Hints, M Cusack
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
While it is well established that the shapes and sizes of shells are strongly phylogenetically controlled, little is known about the phylogenetic constraints on shell thickness. Yet, shell thickness is likely to be sensitive to environmental fluctuations and has the potential to illuminate environmental perturbations through deep time. Here we systematically quantify the thickness of the anterior brachiopod shell which protects the filtration chamber and is thus considered functionally homologous across higher taxa of brachiopods. Our data comes from 66 genera and ten different orders and shows well-defined upper and lower boundaries of anterior shell thickness. For Ordovician and Silurian …

Can Luxury Fashion Provide A Roadmap For Sustainability?, Zeynep Ozdamar-Ertekin
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
Fashion industry is one of the prominent industries in the world with critical negative impacts on the social and ecological environments. It constitutes a very complex and fragmented industry. The currently dominant model of "fast fashion," fulfills the desires of consumers who aspire to wear luxury fashion brands but cannot afford them, by offering them similar styles at affordable prices. However, the main principles of fast fashion, which are speed, affordability, change, disposable trends and aesthetic fads, contradict with sustainability goals and principles. Luxury fashion, on the other hand, emphasizes longevity, durability, authenticity, craftsmanship and quality, and can therefore be …

Societies Without Borders
Borders of nation states are the embodiment of junction between system and lifeworld. They manifest the translation of social into physical spaces and vice versa. The authors reflect the meaning of distinctions and oppositions (us and them, here and there, safety and danger, included and excluded etc.) in construction, maintenance and disappearance of boundaries in space. In the case of borders of nation states the distinctions are identified within and grounded solely upon the political sphere, the same sphere that needs borders and distinctions in order to constitute itself. A qualitative study about the experience and meaning of Yugoslav-Slovenian-Italian border …

Transient High Strain Rate During Localized Viscous Creep In The Dry Lower Continental Crust (Lofoten, Norway), Lr Campbell, L Menegon
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Understanding the ability of the lower crust to support transient changes in stresses and strain rates during the earthquake cycle requires a detailed investigation of the deformation mechanisms and rheology of deep crustal fault rocks. Here, we show that lower crustal pseudotachylyte-bearing shear zones are able to accommodate short-term episodes of high strain rate and high stress deformation by accelerated viscous creep, followed by a reduction in stresses to some ambient deformation condition. Quartz microstructure within pseudotachylyte-bearing shear zones in otherwise undeformed granulites from Lofoten, Norway, indicates that dynamic recrystallization occurred during viscous creep under rapid strain rates and high …

Snow Depth Variability In The Northern Hemisphere Mountains Observed From Space, Hans-Peter Marshall
Snow Depth Variability In The Northern Hemisphere Mountains Observed From Space, Hans-Peter Marshall
Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Accurate snow depth observations are critical to assess water resources. More than a billion people rely on water from snow, most of which originates in the Northern Hemisphere mountain ranges. Yet, remote sensing observations of mountain snow depth are still lacking at the large scale. Here, we show the ability of Sentinel-1 to map snow depth in the Northern Hemisphere mountains at 1 km² resolution using an empirical change detection approach. An evaluation with measurements from ~4000 sites and reanalysis data demonstrates that the Sentinel-1 retrievals capture the spatial variability between and within mountain ranges, as well as their inter-annual …

Predictors Of Bat Species Richness Within The Islands Of The Caribbean Basin, Justin D. Hoffman, Gabrielle Kadlubar, Scott C. Pedersen, Roxanne J. Larsen, Peter A. Larsen, Carleton J. Phillips, Gary G. Kwiecinski, Hugh H. Genoways
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Several mechanisms have been shown to influence species richness among island ecosystems, yet most studies limit their focus to a few predictor variables. The objective of this study is to investigate variation in Chiropteran richness across islands in the Caribbean Basin with an extensive set of predictor variables. Using recent faunal surveys, the most contemporary list of bat species per island was complied. Data were collected on 17 predictor variables, which summarized five general island characteristics including island area, isolation, habitat diversity, human impact, and climate. An information-theoretic approach was used by fitting alternative candidate models to determine which variable(s) …

Extremist Support Across Generational Lines Based On Post-Communist Developments: A Critique Of Post-Materialism, Reese Zavala
Extremist Support Across Generational Lines Based On Post-Communist Developments: A Critique Of Post-Materialism, Reese Zavala
Governance: The Political Science Journal at UNLV
The rise of extremism in Europe is a growing concern, as far-right parties are entering parliament with unprecedented seat-shares, and some are even taking government. It has been established that the older generation is more likely to vote for either extreme and that Eastern Europeans are generally more likely to vote for the extreme, however this is an interesting phenomenon. Why are older people, with experience in a communist regime, so much more likely to support both the far-right and the far-left? The dominating theory explaining this is Inglehart's theory of post-materialism, and even though it has been updated in …

Differentiated Homework: Impact On Student Engagement, Gearoid Keane, Manuela Heinz
Journal of Practitioner Research
This paper describes a mixed methods practitioner research study that aimed to enhance student engagement with homework. Based on a comprehensive literature review and data from a pre-study questionnaire, a differentiated homework strategy was designed by the teacher researcher. Students were assigned homework once a week to allow them to balance homework requirements more successfully with out-of-school activities. They were given a choice of three tasks each week, ranging from lower to higher difficulty levels. Task difficulty levels were not stated, nor were tasks ordered by difficulty. Students’ attitudes towards homework improved over the course of the study and completion …
